03:26
The very next day,
continuing the totally true story,

I got on a G-V to fly to Africa
to make a speech in Nigeria,
58
185000
5976
03:35
in the city of Lagos,
on the topic of energy.
59
191000
2856
03:39
And I began the speech
by telling them the story
60
194301
3796
03:42
of what had just happened
the day before in Nashville.
61
198121
2713
03:45
And I told it pretty much the same way
I've just shared it with you:
62
201196
3306
03:49
Tipper and I were driving ourselves,
63
204526
1738
Tipper e eu dirigindo sozinhos, o Shoney, rede de restaurantes familiares barateiros,
03:51
Shoney's, low-cost
family restaurant chain,
64
206288
2038
o que o homem disse - e eles riram.
03:53
what the man said -- they laughed.
65
208350
1933
03:55
I gave my speech, then went back
out to the airport to fly back home.
66
210703
3583
03:59
I fell asleep on the plane
67
214310
1866
04:01
until, during the middle
of the night, we landed
68
216200
2538
aterrisamos nos Açores para reabastecer.
04:03
on the Azores Islands for refueling.
69
218762
2214
Acordei, eles abriram a porta, eu saí para respirar ar fresco,
04:06
I woke up, they opened the door,
I went out to get some fresh air,
70
221364
3112
e vi um homem correndo na pista.
04:09
and I looked, and there was a man
running across the runway.
71
224500
3476
04:12
And he was waving a piece
of paper, and he was yelling,
72
228000
3055
04:15
"Call Washington! Call Washington!"
73
231079
4074
04:20
And I thought to myself,
in the middle of the night,
74
235981
2445
04:23
in the middle of the Atlantic,
75
238450
1436
04:24
what in the world could be
wrong in Washington?
76
239910
2220
(risadas)
04:26
Then I remembered
it could be a bunch of things.
77
242154
2261
04:29
(Laughter)
78
244439
5537
04:34
But what it turned out to be,
79
250000
1927
04:36
was that my staff was extremely upset
80
251951
3311
04:40
because one of the wire services
in Nigeria had already written a story
81
255286
6202
04:46
about my speech,
82
261512
1420
04:47
and it had already been printed in cities
83
262956
1976
04:49
all across the United States of America.
84
264956
2332
já estava em Monterey, eu verifiquei. E a história começava...
04:52
It was printed in Monterey, I checked.
85
267312
1828
04:53
(Laughter)
86
269164
1150
04:55
And the story began,
87
270553
2661
"O ex-vice presidente Al Gore anunciou ontem na Nigeria
04:58
"Former Vice President Al Gore
announced in Nigeria yesterday," quote:
88
273238
4293
"Eu e minha esposa Tipper abrimos um restaurante familiar barateiro, chamado Shoney,
05:02
'My wife Tipper and I have opened
a low-cost family restaurant'" --
89
277555
3629
05:06
(Laughter)
90
281208
1642
05:07
"'named Shoney's,
91
282874
1348
e eles estão tocando o negócio eles mesmos". (risadas)
05:09
and we are running it ourselves.'"
92
284246
1799
05:10
(Laughter)
93
286069
3320
Antes de eu chegar a solo americano
05:14
Before I could get back to U.S. soil,
94
289413
2158
David Letterman e Jay Leno já tinham começado a história
05:16
David Letterman and Jay Leno
had already started in on --
95
291595
4114
05:20
one of them had me
in a big white chef's hat,
96
295733
3243
05:23
Tipper was saying,
"One more burger with fries!"
97
299000
2429

05:27
Three days later,
99
302524

05:28
I got a nice, long, handwritten letter

06:10
Al Gore: I want to focus
on what many of you have said
113
345212
4518
06:14
you would like me to elaborate on:
114
349754
1866
06:16
What can you do about the climate crisis?
115
351644
3817
06:21
I want to start with a couple of --
116
356317
3339
06:24
I'm going to show some new images,
117
359680
2569
06:27
and I'm going to recapitulate
just four or five.
118
362273
5123
Agora, o slide show. Eu o atualizo a cada apresentação.
06:32
Now, the slide show.
119
368075
1572
06:34
I update the slide show
every time I give it.
120
369671
3305
06:37
I add new images,
121
373000
1237
06:39
because I learn more about it
every time I give it.
122
374261
2905
06:42
It's like beach-combing, you know?
123
377823
1951
É como catar conchas, sabem? A cada maré que vem e vai,
06:44
Every time the tide comes in and out,
you find some more shells.
124
379798
3178
você encontra mais conchas.
06:47
Just in the last two days, we got
the new temperature records in January.
125
383000
5983
06:53
This is just for
the United States of America.
126
389007
3010
06:56
Historical average
for Januarys is 31 degrees;
127
392041
2738
Janeiro é 0 graus Celsius. No último mês foi de 4,1 graus Celsius.
06:59
last month was 39.5 degrees.
128
394803
3684
07:03
Now, I know that you wanted some more
bad news about the environment --
129
398932
4813
07:08
I'm kidding.
130
403769
1168
07:10
But these are the recapitulation slides,
131
405404
3056
07:13
and then I'm going to go into new
material about what you can do.
132
408484
3394
07:16
But I wanted to elaborate
on a couple of these.
133
411902
2395
07:19
First of all, this is where
we're projected to go
134
414321
3311
07:22
with the U.S. contribution
to global warming,
135
417656
2102
07:24
under business as usual.
136
419782
1784
07:26
Efficiency in end-use electricity
and end-use of all energy
137
421590
5386
07:31
is the low-hanging fruit.
138
427000
1624
é a fruta mais baixa. Eficiência e conservação:
07:33
Efficiency and conservation --
it's not a cost; it's a profit.
139
428648
4504
não é custo, é lucro. O sinal está errado.
07:37
The sign is wrong.
140
433176
2677
07:40
It's not negative; it's positive.
141
435877
2143
Não é negativo, é positivo. Estes são investimentos que se pagam.
07:42
These are investments
that pay for themselves.
142
438044
2840
07:45
But they are also very effective
in deflecting our path.
143
440908
3871
07:50
Cars and trucks -- I talked
about that in the slideshow,
144
445620
3995
mas quero colocar isso em perspectiva.
07:54
but I want you to put it in perspective.
145
449639
2492
07:57
It's an easy, visible target of concern --
146
452893
4597
08:02
and it should be --
147
457514
1462
08:03
but there is more global warming pollution
that comes from buildings
148
459000
4679
08:08
than from cars and trucks.
149
463703
1722
08:10
Cars and trucks are very significant,
150
466000
2641

Become a catalyst of change.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Al Gore - Climate advocate
Nobel Laureate Al Gore focused the world’s attention on the global climate crisis. Now he’s showing us how we’re moving towards real solutions.

Why you should listen

Former Vice President Al Gore is co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management. While he’s is a senior partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and a member of Apple, Inc.’s board of directors, Gore spends the majority of his time as chair of The Climate Reality Project, a nonprofit devoted to solving the climate crisis.
