Daniel Schnitzer knew that small-scale solar products (like solar-powered LED lightbulbs) could transform the lives of rural Haitians, but found that despite their value, they wouldn't simply sell themselves. At TEDxPittsburgh, he explains how health and energy solutions for the developing world are useless unless the market works too. (Filmed at TEDxPittsburgh.)

Sem romantizar isso demais:
00:11
So, without romanticizing this too much:
0
1905
2459
00:14
imagine that you light your home
with kerosene and candles every night,
1
4388
3636
imaginem que vocês iluminem sua casa
com querosene e velas toda noite,
e que cozinhem a sua comida
com carvão vegetal.
00:18
and that you do all of your cooking
2
8048
1693
00:19
with charcoal.
3
9765
1161
É assim que os 2 bilhões de pessoas
mais pobres no mundo
00:20
This is how the world's
two billion poorest people
4
10950
2862
00:23
cook and light their homes every day.
5
13836
2061
iluminam suas casas e cozinham todo dia.
00:25
This isn't just inconvenient,
6
15921
1984
Isso não é apenas inconveniente,
00:27
this is inefficient,
7
17929
1654
é ineficiente,
00:29
it's expensive,
8
19607
1260
é caro,
00:30
it's harmful to human health,
harmful to the environment,
9
20891
2690
é prejudicial à saúde humana
e ao meio ambiente e é improdutivo.
00:33
and it's unproductive.
10
23605
1177
Isso é pobreza energética.
00:34
And that's energy poverty.
11
24806
1329
00:36
So let me give you a couple of examples.
12
26159
1906
Então, permitam-me dar alguns exemplos.
00:38
I work in Haiti,
13
28089
1317
Trabalho no Haiti,
00:39
where about 80% of the population
lives in energy poverty.
14
29430
4283
onde cerca de 80% da população
vive na pobreza energética.
00:43
The average household
spends 10% of its income
15
33737
3806
A família média gasta 10% de sua renda
em querosene para iluminação.
00:47
on kerosene for lighting –
16
37567
1838
00:49
that's an order of magnitude greater
than what the average US household spends
17
39429
5193
Isso é muito mais do que as famílias
gastam em média nos EUA
com eletricidade, pra iluminar suas casas.
00:54
on electricity to light their homes.
18
44646
2562
00:57
The 2008 hurricane season in Haiti caused
19
47232
2224
A temporada de furacões de 2008 no Haiti
causou cerca de US$ 1 bilhão em danos.
00:59
about one billion dollars in damage.
20
49480
2195
01:01
That was a sixth of their GDP.
21
51699
2358
Isso representa um sexto do PIB deles.
01:04
The damage was so severe
22
54081
1312
O dano foi grave assim
01:05
because the primary energy fuel
in Haiti is charcoal,
23
55417
3509
porque o combustível principal
de energia no Haiti é o carvão vegetal,
01:08
which is made from trees,
24
58950
1368
que vem das árvores,
01:10
and has left the country
almost completely deforested.
25
60342
2750
o que deixou o país
quase completamente desmatado.
01:13
Without trees, the country can't absorb
heavy rains and massive flooding,
26
63116
4733
Sem árvores, o país não pode absorver
chuvas fortes e grandes inundações.
01:17
as a result.
27
67873
1337
01:19
So in the industrialized world,
28
69234
1566
Assim, no mundo industrializado,
01:20
we built walls that protect us
from the externalities of our energy use;
29
70824
3905
construímos muros que nos protegem das
externalidades do nosso uso da energia;
01:24
we can afford to clean up acute
environmental disasters;
30
74753
3713
podemos bancar a limpeza
de catástrofes ambientais graves;
01:28
and we can also afford
to adapt to chronic conditions
31
78490
3292
e também conseguimos
nos adaptar às condições crônicas,
01:31
like climate change.
32
81806
1600
como as mudanças climáticas.
01:33
That's not the case for Haiti.
They can't afford this.
33
83430
2665
Não é o caso do Haiti;
eles não conseguem fazer isso.
01:36
The only way they're going to lift
themselves out of energy poverty
34
86119
3176
A única maneira de se livrarem
da pobreza energética
01:39
is by adapting fuels
that are more efficient,
35
89319
2685
é adaptando combustíveis
que sejam mais eficientes,
01:42
that are less expensive,
36
92028
1500
menos dispendiosos,
01:43
that are better for human health,
better for the environment
37
93552
2986
melhores para a saúde humana
e o meio ambiente
e que sejam mais produtivos.
01:46
and that are more productive.
38
96562
1459
Acontece que esses combustíveis
e tecnologias existem,
01:48
So it turns out that those fuels
and technologies exist,
39
98045
2686
01:50
and this is an example of that.
40
100755
1579
e este é um exemplo disso.
01:52
This is a solar LED lightbulb
41
102358
2803
Esta é uma lâmpada de LED solar
01:55
that we sell for a retail price
of about 10 dollars in rural Haiti.
42
105185
4957
que vendemos a um preço de varejo
de cerca de US$ 10 na zona rural do Haiti.
02:00
That's a payback period
of less than three months
43
110656
2467
Em menos de três meses
ela compensa o investimento
para a família média haitiana.
02:03
for the average Haitian household.
44
113147
1786
02:07
The prescriptions to solve energy poverty
seems pretty straightforward:
45
117839
3466
A solução para a pobreza energética
parece bem simples:
02:11
you develop these technologies
that have a great return on investment,
46
121329
3385
desenvolver tecnologias
com ótimo retorno do investimento,
e as pessoas consumi-las.
02:14
and people should be snatching them up.
47
124738
1913
Mas não é o caso.
02:16
But that's not the case.
48
126675
1357
02:18
The first time I ever went down to Haiti
was in August of 2008,
49
128056
3198
Fui ao Haiti pela primeira vez
em agosto de 2008
02:21
sort of on a whim,
50
131278
1213
num impulso,
02:22
and I was fielding surveys
in the rural south of the country
51
132515
2882
e fiquei fazendo pesquisas
na região rural sul do país
02:25
to assess the extent of energy poverty.
52
135421
2403
pra avaliar a extensão
da pobreza energética.
02:27
And at night, I would go around sometimes
53
137848
2338
E, à noite, eu dava umas voltas
02:30
and I would speak with the street vendors
54
140210
2187
e falava com vendedores ambulantes
02:32
and see if they were interested
in buying these solar LED lamps.
55
142421
3262
e via se estavam interessados
na compra dessas lâmpadas.
02:35
One woman who I encountered
turned down my offer,
56
145707
2844
Uma mulher que encontrei
recusou minha oferta,
02:38
and she said, “Mon chéri,
c'est trop Cher,”
57
148575
2491
e ela disse: "Mon chéri, c'est trop cher",
02:41
which basically means,
“My dear, it's too expensive.”
58
151090
2688
o que basicamente significa,
"Meu querido, é muito caro".
02:43
But I tried to explain to her,
59
153802
1465
Mas tentei explicar a ela:
02:45
“Look, this is going to save you
a lot of money,
60
155291
2270
"Isso vai lhe poupar muito dinheiro,
e vai lhe dar uma iluminação ainda melhor
02:47
and it's going to give
you even better light
61
157585
2071
do que a que está usando
agora com o querosene".
02:49
than what you're using
now with the kerosene.”
62
159680
2340
02:52
So I didn't make the sale,
63
162044
1342
Então, eu não fiz a venda,
02:53
but I did learn a really important lesson,
64
163410
2467
mas aprendi uma lição
realmente importante:
02:55
which is that technology, products,
65
165901
2008
tecnologia e produtos não acabariam
com a pobreza energética.
02:57
were not going to end energy poverty.
66
167933
2557
03:00
Instead, access was going to.
67
170514
2184
Em vez disso, o acesso acabaria.
03:02
Specifically, there are
two types of access
68
172722
2517
Especificamente,
existem dois tipos de acesso
03:05
that are going to end energy poverty:
69
175263
2004
que vão acabar com a pobreza energética:
03:07
there's physical access,
and there's financial access.
70
177291
3260
o acesso físico e o financeiro.
03:10
So, physical access --
71
180907
1389
O que isso significa acesso físico?
03:12
what does that mean?
72
182829
1553
03:14
It's very expensive for low-income
households in developing countries
73
184406
4235
É muito caro pra famílias de baixa renda
em países em desenvolvimento
03:18
to reach major centers of commerce.
74
188665
1806
chegar aos principais centros de comércio.
03:20
And it's basically impossible for them
to order something off Amazon.com.
75
190495
3928
E é basicamente impossível pra eles
encomendar algo pela Amazon.com.
03:24
“The last mile” is a phrase
that's normally associated
76
194447
2766
"A última milha" é uma expressão
normalmente associada
03:27
with the telecommunications industry.
77
197237
1825
ao setor de telecomunicações,
03:29
It means that last bit
of wire that's necessary
78
199086
2240
ou seja, o último pedacinho de fio
que conecta o cliente ao provedor.
03:31
to connect the customer to the provider.
79
201350
2194
03:33
What we need for ending energy poverty
are last-mile retailers
80
203568
5631
Para acabar com a pobreza energética,
precisamos de varejistas de ponta
03:39
that bring these clean energy
products to the people.
81
209223
3008
que levem esses produtos
de energia limpa para as pessoas.
03:42
The kerosene and charcoal value chains
already figured this out:
82
212255
3136
As cadeias de valor do querosene
e carvão vegetal já descobriram isso:
03:45
those fuels are ubiquitous
across the entire country.
83
215415
3470
esses combustíveis
estão presentes em todo o país.
03:48
You can go to the most remote
village in Haiti
84
218909
2445
Você pode ir ao vilarejo
mais remoto do Haiti
03:51
and you will find somebody
selling kerosene and charcoal.
85
221378
3385
e vai encontrar alguém vendendo
querosene e carvão vegetal.
03:54
So the other type of access: financial.
86
224787
2439
O outro tipo de acesso: financeiro.
03:57
We all know that clean energy
products, technologies,
87
227250
3862
Todos sabemos que produtos
e tecnologias de energia limpa
04:01
tend to be characterized
by higher upfront costs,
88
231136
2559
costumam ser caracterizados
por custos iniciais maiores,
04:03
but very low operating costs.
89
233719
1608
mas custos de operação baixos.
04:05
And so in the industrialized world,
90
235351
1800
E, assim, no mundo industrializado,
04:07
we have very generous subsidies
that are specifically designed
91
237175
3022
temos subsídios muito generosos
especificamente projetados
04:10
to bring down those upfront costs.
92
240221
2568
para reduzir os custos iniciais.
04:12
Those subsidies don't exist in Haiti.
93
242813
2075
Esses subsídios não existem no Haiti.
04:14
What they do have is microfinance.
94
244912
2484
Eles têm o microfinanciamento.
04:17
But you're going to severely diminish
the value proposition
95
247420
2824
Mas isso diminui severamente a proposta
de valor do seu produto de energia limpa
04:20
of your clean energy product
96
250268
1410
04:21
if you expect somebody in Haiti
to go out, get a microloan,
97
251702
3425
se esperar que alguém no Haiti
decida obter um microfinanciamento,
04:25
go back to the retailer,
98
255151
1405
volte ao varejista, para depois
comprar o produto de energia limpa.
04:26
and then buy the clean energy product.
99
256580
2179
04:29
So the prescription to end energy poverty
is much more complicated
100
259500
3888
A receita pra acabar com a pobreza
energética é bem mais complicada
04:33
than simply products.
101
263412
2010
do que produtos simplesmente.
04:35
We need to integrate financial access
102
265446
2723
Precisamos integrar o acesso financeiro
04:38
directly into new, innovative
distribution models.
103
268193
3805
diretamente em modelos
de distribuição novos e inovadores.
O que isso significa?
04:42
What does that mean?
104
272323
1165
04:43
That means bundling consumer credit
with the retailer.
105
273512
3208
Significa fornecer crédito
ao consumidor através do revendedor.
04:46
This is really easy
for Bloomingdale’s to do,
106
276744
2750
Isso é bem fácil para a Bloomingdale's,
04:49
but it's not so easy for a rural
sales agent in Haiti to do.
107
279518
3966
mas não é tão fácil pra um agente
de vendas na zona rural haitiana.
04:53
We need to redirect cash flows
108
283508
2679
Precisamos redirecionar os fluxos de caixa
que estão indo agora da diáspora nos EUA
04:56
that are going now
from the diaspora in the United States
109
286211
2984
através de transferências bancárias
em dinheiro da Western Union
04:59
through Western Union
wire transfers in cash
110
289219
3266
diretamente em produtos de energia limpa
05:02
directly into clean energy products
111
292509
1854
05:04
that can be delivered to or picked up by
their friends or family in Haiti.
112
294387
3836
que possam ser entregues ou retirados
por seus amigos ou familiares no Haiti.
05:08
So the next time you hear
about a technology or product
113
298247
3086
Então, da próxima vez que ouvirem
sobre uma tecnologia ou produto
05:11
that's going to change the world,
114
301357
1660
que vai mudar o mundo,
sejam um pouco céticos.
05:13
be a little bit skeptical.
115
303041
1397
O inventor Dean Kamen,
o cara que inventou o Segway,
05:14
The inventor Dean Kamen,
the guy who invented the Segway,
116
304462
3655
05:18
a genius by any standards,
117
308141
1757
um gênio incomparável,
05:19
once said that his job is easy,
inventing things is easy,
118
309922

uma vez disse que o trabalho dele é fácil,
inventar coisas é fácil.
A parte mais difícil
é a disseminação da tecnologia,
05:25
the hard part is the technology
dissemination --
119
315199
3071
05:28
it's getting those
technologies and products
120
