Bonifejs Muangi (Boniface Mwangi): Dan kad sam ustao sam

Dan kada ste rođeni i dan kada otkrijete zašto." Živopisne slike.

In Sunday school, they taught me

U nedeljnoj školi su me učili
ne suprotstavljaj se, ne svađaj se,

We had a president,
Moi, who was a dictator.
Moi, who was a dictator.
22
60945
2949
Imali smo predsednika,
Moia, koji je bio diktator.
Moia, koji je bio diktator.
01:15
He ruled the country with an iron fist,
23
63894
2206
Vladao je gvozdenom pesnicom,
01:18
and anyone who dared
question his authority
question his authority
24
66100
2438
i ko se usudio da dovede u pitanje
njegov autoritet

01:20
was arrested, tortured,
jailed or even killed.
jailed or even killed.
25
68538
4969
bio bi uhapšen, mučen,
zatvoren ili čak ubijen.
zatvoren ili čak ubijen.
01:25
That meant that people were taught
to be smart cowards, stay out of trouble.
to be smart cowards, stay out of trouble.
26
73507
3924
To znači da su ljudi učeni da budu
pametne kukavice, a ne problemi.
pametne kukavice, a ne problemi.
01:29
Being a coward was not an insult.
27
77431
2043
Biti kukavica nije bila uvreda.
01:31
Being a coward was a compliment.
28
79474
1927
Biti kukavica je bio kompliment.
01:33
We used to be told that a coward
goes home to his mother.
goes home to his mother.
29
81401
3158
Govorili su nam da kukavica
ide kući svojoj majci.
ide kući svojoj majci.
01:36
What that meant: that if you stayed
out of trouble you're going to stay alive.
out of trouble you're going to stay alive.
30
84559
3761
To je značilo: ako se kloniš nevolje,
ostaćeš živ.
ostaćeš živ.
01:40
I used to question this advice,
31
88320
1940
Dovodio sam ovaj savet u pitanje,
01:42
and eight years ago
we had an election in Kenya,
we had an election in Kenya,
32
90260
2822
i pre osam godina
imali smo izbore u Keniji,
imali smo izbore u Keniji,
01:45
and the results were violently disputed.
33
93082
2483
i rezultati su bili žestoko osporeni.
01:47
What followed that election
was terrible violence, rape,
was terrible violence, rape,
34
95565
4737
Ono što je usledilo
bilo je strašno nasilje, silovanja
bilo je strašno nasilje, silovanja
01:52
and the killing of over 1,000 people.
35
100302
3937
i preko 1.000 ubijenih ljudi.
01:56
My work was to document the violence.
36
104239
3121
Moj posao je bio da dokumentujem nasilje.
01:59
As a photographer,
I took thousands of images,
I took thousands of images,
37
107360
2856
Kao fotograf,
slikao sam hiljade fotografija,
slikao sam hiljade fotografija,
02:02
and after two months,
38
110216
2067
i nakon dva meseca,
02:04
the two politicians came together,
had a cup of tea,
had a cup of tea,
39
112283
4875
dva političara su se srela,
popila šolju čaja,
popila šolju čaja,
02:09
signed a peace agreement,
and the country moved on.
and the country moved on.
40
117158
3437
potpisala mirovni sporazum
i zemlja je krenula dalje.
i zemlja je krenula dalje.
02:12
I was a very disturbed man
because I saw the violence firsthand.
because I saw the violence firsthand.
41
120595
3529
Ja sam bio jako uznemiren
jer sam video nasilje iz prve ruke.
jer sam video nasilje iz prve ruke.
02:16
I saw the killings.
I saw the displacement.
I saw the displacement.
42
124124
3606
Video sam ubistva.
Video sam raseljavanje.
Video sam raseljavanje.
02:19
I met women who had been raped,
and it disturbed me,
and it disturbed me,
43
127730
3081
Sreo sam žene koje su bile silovane,
i to me je uznemiravalo,
i to me je uznemiravalo,
02:22
but the country never spoke about it.
44
130811
2044
ali zemlja uopšte nije pričala o tome.
02:24
We pretended. We all became smart cowards.
45
132855
2484
Pretvarali smo se.
Svi smo postali pametne kukavice.
Svi smo postali pametne kukavice.
02:27
We decided to stay out of trouble
and not talk about it.
and not talk about it.
46
135339
3599
Odlučili smo da se klonimo nevolje
i ne pričamo o tome.
i ne pričamo o tome.
02:30
Ten months later, I quit my job.
I said I could not stand it anymore.
I said I could not stand it anymore.
47
138938
3297
Deset meseci kasnije, dao sam otkaz.
Rekao sam da ne mogu više.
Rekao sam da ne mogu više.
02:34
After quitting my job,
I decided to organize my friends
I decided to organize my friends
48
142235
2595
Nakon otkaza
rešio sam da organizujem prijatelje
rešio sam da organizujem prijatelje
02:36
to speak about
the violence in the country,
the violence in the country,
49
144830
2020
da pričamo o nasilju u zemlji
02:38
to speak about the state of the nation,
50
146850
1864
da pričamo o stanju nacije,
02:40
and June 1, 2009 was the day
that we were meant to go to the stadium
that we were meant to go to the stadium
51
148714
4116
i 1. jun 2009. je bio dan
kada je trebalo da odemo na stadion
kada je trebalo da odemo na stadion
02:44
and try and get the president's attention.
52
152830
2059
i pokušamo da skrenemo pažnju predsedniku.
02:46
It's a national holiday,
53
154889
1440
Državni je praznik,
02:48
it's broadcast across the country,
54
156329
1649
emituje se širom zemlje,
02:49
and I showed up at the stadium.
55
157978
3408
i ja sam se pojavio na stadionu.
02:53
My friends did not show up.
56
161386
2994
Moji prijatelji nisu.
02:56
I found myself alone,
57
164380
3373
Našao sam se sam,
02:59
and I didn't know what to do.
58
167753
2527
i nisam znao šta da radim.
03:02
I was scared,
59
170280
1415
Bio sam uplašen,
03:03
but I knew very well
that that particular day,
that that particular day,
60
171695
2170
ali sam dobro znao da baš tog dana
03:05
I had to make a decision.
61
173865
1221
moram da odlučim.
03:07
Was I able to live as a coward,
like everyone else,
like everyone else,
62
175086
2423
Da li ću da živim kao kukavica
kao svi drugi,
kao svi drugi,
03:09
or was I going to make a stand?
63
177509
1598
ili ću da zauzmem stav?
03:11
And when the president stood up to speak,
64
179107
2206
I kada je predsednik ustao da govori
03:13
I found myself on my feet
shouting at the president,
shouting at the president,
65
181313
4607
našao sam se na nogama
vičući na predsednika,
vičući na predsednika,
03:17
telling him to remember
the post-election violence victims,
the post-election violence victims,
66
185920
3194
govoreći mu da se seti
post-izbornih žrtava nasilja,
post-izbornih žrtava nasilja,
03:21
to stop the corruption.
67
189114
2276
da zaustavi korupciju.
03:23
And suddenly, out of nowhere,
68
191390
2205
Odjednom, niotkuda,
03:25
the police pounced on me
like hungry lions.
like hungry lions.
69
193595
3112
policajci su se okomili na mene
kao gladni lavovi.
kao gladni lavovi.
03:28
They held my mouth
70
196707
1857
Zapušili su mi usta
03:30
and dragged me out of the stadium,
71
198564
1927
i odvukli me sa stadiona,
03:32
where they thoroughly beat me up
and locked me up in jail.
and locked me up in jail.
72
200491
2971
zatim dobrano pretukli i bacili u zatvor.
03:37
I spent that night in
a cold cement floor in the jail,
a cold cement floor in the jail,
73
205112
6758
Proveo sam tu noć
na hladnom betonskom podu zatvora
na hladnom betonskom podu zatvora
03:43
and that got me thinking.
74
211870
2648
i to me je nateralo na razmišljanje.
03:46
What was making me feel this way?
75
214518
1871
Zbog čega sam se ovako osećao?
03:48
My friends and family thought
I was crazy because of what I did,
I was crazy because of what I did,
76
216389
3165
Moji prijatelji i porodica su mislili
da sam lud što sam to uradio,
da sam lud što sam to uradio,
03:51
and the images that I took
were disturbing my life.
were disturbing my life.
77
219554
5014
a fotografije koje sam slikao
su uznemiravale moj život.
su uznemiravale moj život.
03:56
The images that I took
were just a number to many Kenyans.
were just a number to many Kenyans.
78
224568
2950
Te fotografije su bile
samo broj mnogim Kenijcima.
samo broj mnogim Kenijcima.
03:59
Most Kenyans did not see the violence.
79
227518
1947
Većina Kenijaca nije videla nasilje.
04:01
It was a story to them.
80
229465
1695
To je za njih bila priča.
04:03
And so I decided to actually
start a street exhibition
start a street exhibition
81
231160
2787
I tako sam rešio da zapravo
započnem uličnu izložbu
započnem uličnu izložbu
04:05
to show the images of the violence
across the country
across the country
82
233947
2786
da pokažem fotografije
nasilja celoj zemlji,
nasilja celoj zemlji,
04:08
and get people talking about it.
83
236733
1974
da podstaknem ljude da pričaju o tome.
04:10
We traveled the country
and showed the images,
and showed the images,
84
238707
2809
Proputovali smo zemlju
i pokazali fotografije,
i pokazali fotografije,
04:13
and this was a journey that has started me
to the activist path,
to the activist path,
85
241516
3483
i to je bilo putovanje kojim je
započeo moj aktivistički rad,
započeo moj aktivistički rad,
04:16
where I decided to become silent no more,
86
244999
2717
kada sam rešio da više neću ćutati,
04:19
to talk about those things.
87
247716
2198
da ću pričati o tim stvarima.
04:21
We traveled, and our general site
from our street exhibit
from our street exhibit
88
249914
3650
Putovali smo, i naše glavno mesto
je od ulične izložbe
je od ulične izložbe
04:25
became for political graffiti
about the situation in the country,
about the situation in the country,
89
253564
4798
postalo mesto za političke grafite
o situaciji u zemlji,
o situaciji u zemlji,
04:30
talking about corruption, bad leadership.
90
258362
2758
koji govore o korupciji,
lošem rukovodstvu.
lošem rukovodstvu.
04:33
We have even done symbolic burials.
91
261120
3780
Čak smo imali i simbolične sahrane.
04:36
We have delivered live pigs
to Kenya's parliament
to Kenya's parliament
92
264900
3982
Isporučili smo žive svinje
u kenijski parlament
u kenijski parlament
04:40
as a symbol of our politicians' greed.
93
268882
1928
kao simbol pohlepe naših političara.
04:42
It has been done in Uganda
and other countries,
and other countries,
94
270810
2231
Radili su to i u Ugandi i drugim zemljama,
04:45
and what is most powerful is that
the images have been picked by the media
the images have been picked by the media
95
273041
3509
i ono što je jako moćno je to
što su slike pokupili mediji
što su slike pokupili mediji
04:48
and amplified across the country,
across the continent.
across the continent.
96
276550
3036
i preneli širom zemlje, širom kontinenta.
04:51
Where I used to stand up alone
seven years ago,
seven years ago,
97
279586
2647
Ustao sam sam pre sedam godina,
04:54
now I belong to a community
of many people who stand up with me.
of many people who stand up with me.
98
282233
3026
a sada pripadam grupi ljudi
koji stoje zajedno sa mnom.
koji stoje zajedno sa mnom.
04:57
I am no longer alone when I stand up
to speak about these things.
to speak about these things.
99
285259
4328
Više nisam sam kada ustanem
da pričam o tim stvarima.
da pričam o tim stvarima.
05:02
I belong to a group of young people
who are passionate about the country,
who are passionate about the country,
100
290177
4173
Pripadam grupi mladih ljudi
kojima je stalo do zemlje,
kojima je stalo do zemlje,
05:06
who want to bring about change,
101
294350
1850
koji žele promene,
05:08
and they're no longer afraid,
and they're no longer smart cowards.
and they're no longer smart cowards.
102
296200
4414
i oni se više ne plaše
i više nisu pametne kukavice.
i više nisu pametne kukavice.
05:13
So that was my story.
103
301744
2728
To je moja priča.
05:18
That day in the stadium,
104
306242
2598
Tog dana na stadionu,
05:20
I stood up as a smart coward.
105
308840
2487
ustao sam kao pametna kukavica.
05:23
By that one action, I said goodbye
to the 24 years living as a coward.
to the 24 years living as a coward.
106
311327
5247
I tim jednim potezom, pozdravio sam se
sa 24 godine života kukavice.
sa 24 godine života kukavice.
05:28
There are two most powerful
days in your life:
days in your life:
107
316574
3042
Dva su dana najmoćnija u životu:
05:31
the day you're born,
and the day you discover why.
and the day you discover why.
108
319616
4546
dan kada ste rođeni,
i dan kada otkrijete zašto.
i dan kada otkrijete zašto.
05:36
That day standing up in that stadium
shouting at the President,
shouting at the President,
109
324771
3244
Tog dana kada sam ustao na stadionu,
vikao na predsednika,
vikao na predsednika,
05:40
I discovered why I was truly born,
110
328015
3280
otkrio sam zašto sam zaista rođen,
05:43
that I would no longer be silent
in the face of injustice.
in the face of injustice.
111
331295
3251
i da neću više ćutati o nepravdama.
05:47
Do you know why you were born?
112
335776
2804
Da li vi znate zašto ste rođeni?
05:51
Thank you.
113
339700
1835
Hvala vam.
05:53
(Applause)
114
341535
4919
(Aplauz)
06:00
Tom Rielly: It's an amazing story.
115
348524
2507
Tom Rajli: Neverovatna priča.
06:03
I just want to ask you
a couple quick questions.
a couple quick questions.
116
351031
2556
Želim da ti postavim par kratkih pitanja.
06:05
So PAWA254:
117
353587
2320
Dakle, PAWA254:
06:07
you've created a studio, a place
where young people can go
where young people can go
118
355907
4313
osnovao si studio,
mesto gde mladi mogu da odu
mesto gde mladi mogu da odu
06:12
and harness the power of digital media
119
360220
1956
i iskoriste moć digitalnih medija

What's happening now with PAWA?
121

Šta se sada dešava sa PAWA?
06:18
Boniface Mwangi: So we have
this community of filmmakers,
this community of filmmakers,
122
366564
2783
Bonifejs Muangi: Imamo
grupu filmskih stvaralaca,
grupu filmskih stvaralaca,
06:21
graffiti artists, musicians,
and when there's an issue in the country,
and when there's an issue in the country,
123
369347
3363
grafiti umetnika, muzičara,
i kada postoji problem u zemlji,
i kada postoji problem u zemlji,
06:24
we come together, we brainstorm,
and take up on that issue.
and take up on that issue.
124
372710
2801
skupimo se, mozgamo,
i bacimo se na problem.
i bacimo se na problem.
06:27
So our most powerful tool is art,
125
375511
2056
Naše najmoćnije oruđe je umetnost,
06:29
because we live in a very busy world
where people are so busy in their life,
where people are so busy in their life,
126
377567
3831
jer živimo u veoma užurbanom svetu
gde su ljudi toliko zauzeti
gde su ljudi toliko zauzeti
06:33
and they don't have time to read.
127
381398
2067
da nemaju vremena da čitaju.
06:35
So we package our activism
and we package our message in art.
and we package our message in art.
128
383465
4133
Tako spakujemo naš aktivizam,
spakujemo našu poruku u umetnost.
spakujemo našu poruku u umetnost.
06:39
So from the music, the graffiti,
the art, that's what we do.
the art, that's what we do.
129
387598
4979
Dakle, od muzike do grafita,
umetnosti, to je to što radimo.
umetnosti, to je to što radimo.
06:45
Can I say one more thing?
130
393557
2028
Mogu li da kažem samo jednu stvar?
06:47
TR: Yeah, of course. (Applause)
131
395585
1881
TR: Da, naravno. (Aplauz)
06:49
BM: In spite of being arrested,
beaten up, threatened,
beaten up, threatened,
132
397466
2635
BM: Iako sam hapšen,
prebijan, prećeno mi je,
prebijan, prećeno mi je,
06:52
the moment I discovered my voice,
133
400101
1713
od momenta kad sam otkrio svoj glas,
06:53
that I could actually stand up
for what I really believed in,
for what I really believed in,
134
401814
2896
da zapravo mogu da ustanem
za ono u šta verujem,
za ono u šta verujem,
06:56
I'm no longer afraid.
135
404710
1038
više se ne plašim.
06:57
I used to be called softy,
but I'm no longer softy,
but I'm no longer softy,
136
405748
2742
Zvali su me mekušcem,
ali više nisam mekušac,
ali više nisam mekušac,
07:00
because I discovered who I really am,
as in, that's what I want to do,
as in, that's what I want to do,
137
408490
3401
jer sam otkrio ko ja zaista jesam,
u smislu onoga što želim da radim.
u smislu onoga što želim da radim.
07:03
and there's such beauty in doing that.
138
411891
3036
i u tome je prava lepota.
07:06
There's nothing as powerful as that,
knowing that I'm meant to do this,
knowing that I'm meant to do this,
139
414927
3389
Ništa nije tako moćno kao to,
saznanje da time treba da se bavim,
saznanje da time treba da se bavim,
07:10
because you don't get scared,
you just continue living your life.
you just continue living your life.
140
418316
3147
jer se više ne plašiš,
samo nastaviš da živiš.
samo nastaviš da živiš.
07:13
Thank you.

Hvala vam.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Boniface Mwangi -Boniface Mwangi is an award-winning Kenyan photographer, artist and activist. He is a TED Fellow.
Why you should listen
For four years Boniface Mwangi held a staff photography position at The Standard, the second largest Kenyan newspaper, taking on various assignments of increasing responsibility in a number of countries. Mwangi became the eye of Kenyans during the 2007 post-election violence and showed courage and compassion to capture thousands of images, some so gory that they could not be published.
Following the political resolution to the election crisis, Boniface started to see himself as a visual artist, using photography as the vehicle for social change in Kenya. His focus was the fight against the impunity of politicians in the face of over 1000 dead and half a million people displaced as a result of the violence they caused.
"Boniface’s images are crucial for the healing of our nation; his ability to stay focused and inject a sense of artistry into his work is a testimony to the spirit of professional journalism," wrote Jackson Biko after Boniface was voted Kenya Photojournalist of the Year in 2008 by readers of Adam, a men’s magazine in the country.
Since then, Boniface has continued to work as a freelance photographer for Bloomberg, the AFP, Reuters, the Boston Globe, and other media outlets while building a movement for social change in Kenya through “Picha Mtaani” (Swahili for street exhibition). The photo exhibit aims to heal the scars of Kenyans and draw their attention to the dynamics of the violence to prevent a repeat during the upcoming elections of 2013.
Boniface founded Pawa254 as a collaborative hub where journalists, artists and activists could meet to find innovative ways of achieving social change. The hub has already had many functions, but two campaigns stand out. “Heal the Nation” is a very successful initiative to show a half-hour documentary about post-election violence to as many Kenyans as possible and facilitate discussions around the film. The campaign is accompanied by a more shadowy graffiti campaign that has evoked strong reactions and fired up the youth of Kenya and the world, as images of the clever graffiti grace the pages of the world’s newspapers.
In 2009 United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wrote a letter commending Boniface for his work during the post-election violence. She stated, "Your photography is absolutely stunning and tells an important and powerful story for the world to hear."
