ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dan Ariely - Behavioral economist
The dismal science of economics is not as firmly grounded in actual behavior as was once supposed. In "Predictably Irrational," Dan Ariely told us why.

Why you should listen

Dan Ariely is a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight. He is the author of the bestsellers Predictably IrrationalThe Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty -- as well as the TED Book Payoff: The Hidden Logic that Shapes Our Motivations.

Through his research and his (often amusing and unorthodox) experiments, he questions the forces that influence human behavior and the irrational ways in which we often all behave.

( TEDxRiodelaPlata)

So in the second二番 condition調子 of this experiment実験, that's exactly正確に what we did.
93
292406
3497
05:07
We asked尋ねた people, "Would you like to buildビルドする one Bionicleバイオニクル for three dollarsドル?"
94
295903
5087

05:18
And if they said yes, we gave与えた them a new新しい one,
97
306391
3359
05:21
and as they were building建物 it,
98
309750
1965
05:23
we took取った apart離れて the one that they just finished完成した.
99
311715
2868
05:26
And when they finished完成した that,
100
314583
2628
05:29
we said, "Would you like to buildビルドする another別の one, this time for 30 centsセント lessもっと少なく?"

And if they said yes, we gave与えた them the one that they built建てられた and we broke壊れた.
102
320878
4033
05:36
So this was an endless無限 cycleサイクル
103
324911

of them building建物 and us destroying破壊 in frontフロント of their彼らの eyes.
104

05:44
Now what happens起こる when you compare比較する these two conditions条件?
105
332190
4153
05:48
The first thing that happened
05:49
was that people built建てられた manyたくさんの more Bioniclesビオニクス -- they built建てられた 11 versus sevenセブン --
107
337429
3715

05:56
And by the way, we should pointポイント out that this was not a big大きい meaning意味.
109
344796
3068
05:59
People were not curing硬化する cancer or building建物 bridges.
110
347864
2414

06:02
People were building建物 Bioniclesビオニクス for a few少数 centsセント.
111
350278
4105
06:06
And not only that, everybodyみんな knew知っていた that the Bioniclesビオニクス would be destroyed破壊されました quiteかなり soonすぐに.
112
354383
5051
06:11
So there was not a realリアル opportunity機会 for big大きい meaning意味.
113
359434
2894
06:14
But even the small小さい meaning意味 made a difference.
114
362328
3885
06:18
Now we had another別の versionバージョン of this experiment実験.
115
366213
2371
06:20
In this other versionバージョン of the experiment実験,
116
368584
1539
06:22
we didn't put people in this situation状況,
117
370123
2337
06:24
we just described記載された to them the situation状況, much as I am describing記述 to you now,
118
372460

3116

06:31
What happened
06:33
People predicted予測された the right direction方向 but not the right magnitudeマグニチュード.
121
381091
4051

06:37
People who were just given与えられた the description説明 of the experiment実験
122
385142

06:41
said that in the meaningful意味のある condition調子 people would probably多分 buildビルドする one more Bionicleバイオニクル.
123
389198
4313
06:45
So people understandわかる that meaning意味 is important重要,
124
393511
2450

We took取った a sheetシート of paper with randomランダム letters手紙,

That was the task

10:05
And people did the first sheetシート.
189

10:12
And we had three conditions条件.
192
600781
1883
10:14
In the first condition調子, people wrote書きました their彼らの name on the sheetシート,
193
602664
3688
10:18
found見つけた all the pairsペア of letters手紙, gave与えた it to the experimenter実験者.
194
606352
3678
10:22
The experimenter実験者 would look at it, scanスキャン it from top to bottom,
195
610030
3966
10:25
say "uh huh" and put it on the pileパイル next to them.
196
613996
4150
10:30
In the second二番 condition調子, people did not write書きます their彼らの name on it.
197
618146
3699
10:33
The experimenter実験者 looked見た at it,
198
621845
2218
10:36
took取った the sheetシート of paper, did not look at it, did not scanスキャン it,
199
624063
3133
10:39
and simply単に put it on the pileパイル of pagesページ.
200
627196
3599
10:42
So you take a pieceピース, you just put it on the side.
201
630795
2652
10:45
And in the third三番 condition調子,
202
633447
1146
10:46
the experimenter実験者 got the sheetシート of paper and directly直接 put it into a shredderシュレッダー.
203
634593
8378
10:54
What happened起こった in those three conditions条件?
204
642971

10:57
In this plotプロット I'm showing表示 you at what pay支払う rateレート people stopped停止.

11:02
So low低い numbers数字 mean that people worked働いた harderもっと強く. They worked働いた for much longerより長いです.
206
650220
4518
11:06
In the acknowledged認められた condition調子, people worked働いた all the way down to 15 centsセント.
207
654738
4916
11:11
At 15 centsセント per〜ごと pageページ, they basically基本的に stopped停止 these efforts尽力.
208
659654
3744
11:15
In the shredderシュレッダー condition調子, it was twice二度 as much -- 30 centsセント per〜ごと sheetシート.
209
663398
4755
11:20
And this is basically基本的に the result結果 we had before.
210
668153
2173
11:22
You shred細断した people's人々の efforts尽力, output出力,
211
670326
3478
11:25
you get them not to be as happyハッピー with what they're doing.
212
673804
2499
11:28
But I should pointポイント out, by the way,
213
676303
1535
11:29
that in the shredderシュレッダー condition調子, people could have cheated騙された.
214
677838
2965
11:32
They could have done完了 not so good work,
215
680803
2181
11:34
because they realized実現した that people were just shredding細断 it.
216
682984
2503
11:37
So maybe the first sheetシート you would do good work,
217
685487
1867
11:39
but then you see nobody誰も is really testingテスト it,
218
687354
1919
11:41
so you would do more and more and more.
219
689273
2195
11:43
So in fact事実, in the shredderシュレッダー condition調子,
220
691468
1562
11:45
people could have submitted提出済み more work and gotten得た more moneyお金
221
693030
2874
11:47
and put lessもっと少なく effort努力 into it.
222
695904
2419
11:50
But what about the ignored無視された condition調子?
223
698323
2147
11:52
Would the ignored無視された condition調子 be more like the acknowledged認められた or more like the shredderシュレッダー,
224
700470
3513
11:55
or somewhereどこかで in the middle中間?
225
703983
2019
11:58
It turnsターン out it was almostほぼ like the shredderシュレッダー.
226
706002
3356
12:01
Now there's good newsニュース and bad悪い newsニュース here.
227
709358
2807
12:04
The bad悪い newsニュース is that ignoring無視する the performanceパフォーマンス of people
228
712165
4635
12:08
is almostほぼ as bad悪い as shredding細断 their彼らの effort努力 in frontフロント of their彼らの eyes.
229
716800
4500
12:13
Ignoring無視する gets取得 you a whole全体 way out there.
230
721300
3750
12:17
The good newsニュース is that by simply単に looking at something that somebody誰か has done完了,
231
725050
4400
12:21
scanning走査 it and saying言って "uh huh,"
232
729450
2215
12:23
that seems思われる to be quiteかなり sufficient十分
233
731665
1404
12:25
to dramatically劇的に improve改善する people's人々の motivations動機.
234
733069
3243
12:28
So the good newsニュース is that adding追加する motivation動機 doesn't seem思われる to be so difficult難しい.
235
736312
5481
12:33
The bad悪い newsニュース is that eliminating排除する motivations動機
236
741793
2297
12:36
seems思われる to be incredibly信じられないほど easy簡単,
237
744090
1775
12:37
and if we don't think about it carefully慎重に, we mightかもしれない overdo過ぎる it.
238
745865

12:41
So this is all in terms条項 of negative motivation動機
239
749556
3485
12:45
or eliminating排除する negative motivation動機.
240
