ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Esther Perel - Relationship therapist
Psychotherapist Esther Perel is changing the conversation on what it means to be in love and have a fulfilling sex life.

Why you should listen

For the first time in human history, couples aren’t having sex just to have kids; there’s room for sustained desire and long-term sexual relationships. But how? Perel, a licensed marriage and family therapist with a practice in New York, travels the world to help people answer this question. For her research she works across cultures and is fluent in nine languages. She coaches, consults and speaks regularly on erotic intelligence, trauma, sexual honesty and conflict resolution. She is the author of Mating in Captivity: Reconciling the Erotic and the Domestic. Her latest work focuses on infidelity: what it is, why happy people do it and how couples can recover from it. She aims to locate this very personal experience within a larger cultural context.

So, why does good sex so often fade,
0
1394
3048
00:20
even for couples who continue to love each other as much as ever?
1
4442
4945
00:25
And why does good intimacy not guarantee good sex,
2
9387
3143
00:28
contrary to popular belief?
3
12530
2631
ao contrário do que a maioria acredita?
00:31
Or, the next question would be,
4
15161
2194
Ou a próxima pergunta seria
00:33
can we want what we already have?
5
17355
2573
podemos querer o que já temos?
00:35
That's the million-dollar question, right?
6
19928
2713
É uma pergunta difícil, não?
00:38
And why is the forbidden so erotic?
7
22641
1713
00:40
What is it about transgression that makes desire so potent?
8
24354
4261
00:44
And why does sex make babies,
9
28615
1487
E por que o sexo faz bebês,
00:46
and babies spell erotic disaster in couples?
10
30102
4113
00:50
It's kind of the fatal erotic blow, isn't it?
11
34215
2687
00:52
And when you love, how does it feel?
12
36902
2449
00:55
And when you desire, how is it different?
13
39351
3153
00:58
These are some of the questions
14
42504
1668
Essas são algumas perguntas
01:00
that are at the center of my exploration
15
44172
2588
que estão no centro da minha exploração
01:02
on the nature of erotic desire
16
46760
2752
sobre a natureza do desejo erótico
01:05
and its concomitant dilemmas in modern love.
17
49512
3998
e seus constantes dilemas no amor moderno.
01:09
So I travel the globe,
18
53510
1802
Eu viajo pelo mundo,
01:11
and what I'm noticing is that
19
55312
2194
e o que noto é que
01:13
everywhere where romanticism has entered,
20
57506
2961
em todo lugar onde o romantismo entrou,
01:16
there seems to be a crisis of desire.
21
60467
2912
parece existir uma crise do desejo.
01:19
A crisis of desire, as in owning the wanting --
22
63379
4781
01:24
desire as an expression of our individuality,
23
68160
3010
desejo como uma expressão da nossa individualidade,
01:27
of our free choice, of our preferences, of our identity --
24
71170
3701
nossa escolha, preferências, identidade -
01:30
desire that has become a central concept
25
74871
3279
desejo que se tornou um conceito central
01:34
as part of modern love and individualistic societies.
26
78150
3559
01:37
You know, this is the first time in the history of humankind
27
81709
3241
01:40
where we are trying to experience sexuality in the long term,
28
84950
5783
01:46
not because we want 14 children,
29
90733
4033
não porque queiramos 14 filhos,
01:50
for which we need to have even more because many of them won't make it,
30
94766
4196
01:54
and not because it is exclusively a woman's marital duty.
31
98962
4169
01:59
This is the first time that we want sex over time
32
103131
4519
02:03
about pleasure and connection that is rooted in desire.
33
107650
4780
ainda tenha prazer e conexão baseados no desejo.
02:08
So what sustains desire, and why is it so difficult?
34
112430
3412
02:11
And at the heart of sustaining desire in a committed relationship,
35
115842
5245
02:16
I think is the reconciliation of two fundamental human needs.
36
121087
5607
02:22
On the one hand, our need for security, for predictability,
37
126694
5162
02:27
for safety, for dependability, for reliability, for permanence --
38
131856
7392
proteção, dependência, confiança, permanência,
02:35
all these anchoring, grounding experiences of our lives
39
139248
3118
todas essas experiências fundamentadas das nossas vidas
02:38
that we call home.
40
142366
1659
que chamamos de lar.
02:39
But we also have an equally strong need -- men and women --
41
144025
4443
02:44
for adventure, for novelty, for mystery, for risk, for danger,
42
148468
5584
por aventura, novidade, mistério, risco, perigo,
02:49
for the unknown, for the unexpected, surprise --
43
154052
3290
o desconhecido, o inesperado, surpresa -
02:53
you get the gist -- for journey, for travel.
44
157342
3906
já entenderam - por viagens.
02:57
So reconciling our need for security
45
161248
2158
Conciliar nossa necessidade por segurança
02:59
and our need for adventure into one relationship,
46
163406
2965
03:02
or what we today like to call a passionate marriage,
47
166371
2883
03:05
used to be a contradiction in terms.
48
169254
2574
costumava ser uma contradição.
03:07
Marriage was an economic institution
49
171828
2768
Matrimônio era uma instituição econômica
03:10
in which you were given a partnership for life
50
174596
3716
03:14
in terms of children and social status
51
178312
2744
em relação aos filhos, "status" social,
03:16
and succession and companionship.
52
181056
2402
sucessão e companhia.
03:19
But now we want our partner to still give us all these things,
53
183458
4434
03:23
but in addition I want you to be my best friend
54
187892
2452
e além disso quero que seja meu melhor amigo
03:26
and my trusted confidant and my passionate lover to boot,
55
190344
3234
e meu confidente, meu amante apaixonado,
03:29
and we live twice as long.
56
193578
1404
e vivemos o dobro do tempo.
03:30
(Laughter)
57
194982
2658
(Risos)
03:33
So we come to one person, and we basically are asking them
58
197640
4258
Então nós basicamente pedimos a uma pessoa
03:37
to give us what once an entire village used to provide:
59
201898
3327
03:41
Give me belonging, give me identity, give me continuity,
60
205225
4148
Dê-me merecimento, identidade, continuidade,
03:45
but give me transcendence and mystery and awe all in one.
61
209373
3899
03:49
Give me comfort, give me edge.
62
213272
1891
Dê-me conforto, limite.
03:51
Give me novelty, give me familiarity.
63
215163
1922
Dê-me novidade, familiaridade.
03:52
Give me predictability, give me surprise.
64
217085
2065
Dê-me previsibilidade, surpresa.
03:55
And we think it's a given, and toys and lingerie are going to save us with that.
65
219150
4223
03:59
(Applause)
66
223373
5360
(Aplausos)
04:04
So now we get to the existential reality of the story, right?
67
228733
4239
Agora chegamos a realidade existencial da história, certo?
04:08
Because I think, in some way -- and I'll come back to that --
68
232972
5768
04:14
but the crisis of desire is often a crisis of the imagination.
69
238740
3574
04:18
So why does good sex so often fade?
70
242314
3623
04:21
What is the relationship between love and desire?
71
245937
2548
Qual a relação entre amor e desejo?
04:24
How do they relate, and how do they conflict?
72
248485
3124
Como se relacionam e como se chocam?
04:27
Because therein lies the mystery of eroticism.
73
251609
3148
Porque aí mora o mistério do erotismo.
04:30
So if there is a verb, for me, that comes with love, it's "to have."
74
254757
4250
Para mim, se há um verbo que vem junto com amor é o "ter".
04:34
And if there is a verb that comes with desire, it is "to want."
75
259007
4184
04:39
In love, we want to have, we want to know the beloved.
76
263191
3859
No amor, nós queremos ter, queremos conhecer o amado.
04:42
We want to minimize the distance. We want to contract that gap.
77
267050
4503
Queremos minimizar a distância. Queremos diminuir o espaço.
04:47
We want to neutralize the tensions. We want closeness.
78
271553
4044
Queremos neutralizar as tensões. Queremos proximidade.
04:51
But in desire, we tend to not really want to go back to the places we've already gone.
79
275597
5409
04:56
Forgone conclusion does not keep our interest.
80
281006
3477
Conclusões precipitadas não mantêm nosso interesse.
05:00
In desire, we want an Other, somebody on the other side that we can go visit,
81
284483
4984
05:05
that we can go spend some time with,
82
289467
2378
que podemos passar um tempo juntos,
05:07
that we can go see what goes on in their red light district.
83
291845
4103
05:11
In desire, we want a bridge to cross.
84
295948
3345
No desejo, queremos uma ponte para atravessar.
05:15
Or in other words, I sometimes say, fire needs air.
85
299293
3375
05:18
Desire needs space.
86
302668
2255
O desejo precisa de espaço.
05:20
And when it's said like that, it's often quite abstract.
87
304923
3544
Dizendo assim, soa quase sempre abstrato.
05:24
But then I took a question with me.
88
308467
1601
Fiquei com essa questão na cabeça
05:25
And I've gone to more than 20 countries in the last few years
89
310068
2475
05:28
with "Mating in Captivity," and I asked people,
90
312543
2932
05:31
when do you find yourself most drawn to your partner?
91
315475
3305
05:34
Not attracted sexually, per se, but most drawn.
92
318780
3154
Não sexualmente atraído, mas atraído em geral.
05:37
And across culture, across religion, and across gender --
93
321934
3414
Independente da cultura, religião e gênero,
05:41
except for one -- there are a few answers that just keep coming back.
94
325348
5386
exceto por um, apresentam algumas respostas semelhantes.
05:46
So the first group is: I am most drawn to my partner
95
330734
4538
05:51
when she is away, when we are apart, when we reunite.
96
335272
6685
quando estamos longe, separados e nos reencontramos.
05:57
Basically, when I get back in touch
97
341957
3560
06:01
with my ability to imagine myself with my partner,
98
345517
3711
06:05
when my imagination comes back in the picture,
99
349228
2865
quando minha imaginação começa a visualizar,
06:07
and when I can root it in absence and in longing,
100
352093
4947
06:12
which is a major component of desire.
101
357040
2695
que é o maior componente do desejo.
06:15
But then the second group is even more interesting:
102
359735
3030
06:18
I am most drawn to my partner
103
362765
1842
Eu me sinto mais atraida pelo meu parceiro
06:20
when I see him in the studio, when she is onstage,
104
364607
3982
quando o vejo no estúdio, no palco,
06:24
when he is in his element, when she's doing something she's passionate about,
105
368589
4302
06:28
when I see him at a party and other people are really drawn to him,
106
372891
3392
06:32
when I see her hold court.
107
376283
2288
quando é o centro das atenções.
06:34
Basically, when I look at my partner radiant and confident,
108
378571
4448
06:38
probably the biggest turn-on across the board.
109
383019
3094
é provavelmente o maior estímulo de todos.
06:42
Radiant, as in self-sustaining.
110
386113
2840
Radiante, como em autossustentável.
06:44
I look at this person -- by the way, in desire
111
388953
2912
06:47
people rarely talk about it, when we are blended into one,
112
391865
2630
06:50
five centimeters from each other. I don't know in inches how much that is.
113
394495
3490
cinco centímetros um do outro.
06:53
But it's also not when the other person is that far apart
114
397985
3256
06:57
that you no longer see them.
115
401241
1392
que você não pode vê-la mais.
06:58
It's when I'm looking at my partner from a comfortable distance,
116
402633
4392
07:02
where this person that is already so familiar, so known,
117
407025
4349
07:07
is momentarily once again somewhat mysterious, somewhat elusive.
118
411374
4839
07:12
And in this space between me and the other lies the erotic élan,
119
416213
4855
07:16
lies that movement toward the other.
120
421068
2593
encontra-se o movimento em direção ao outro.
07:19
Because sometimes, as Proust says,
121
423661
2163
Porque algumas vezes, como disse Proust,
07:21
mystery is not about traveling to new places,
122
425824
2675
"a verdadeira viagem do descobrimento não consiste em procurar novas paisagens,
07:24
but it's about looking with new eyes.
123
428499
2179
mas em possuir novos olhos".
07:26
And so, when I see my partner on his own or her own,
124
430678
3529
Quando vejo meu parceiro por si mesmo,
07:30
doing something in which they are enveloped,
125
434207
2709
envolvendo-se em algo,
07:32
I look at this person and I momentarily get a shift in perception,
126
436916
4863
07:37
and I stay open to the mysteries that are living right next to me.
127
441779
5272
07:42
And then, more importantly, in this description about the other
128
447051
4472
07:47
or myself -- it's the same -- what is most interesting
129
451523
3644
07:51
is that there is no neediness in desire.
130
455167
2559
é que não há carência no desejo.
07:53
Nobody needs anybody.
131
457726
2328
Ninguém precisa de ninguém.
07:55
There is no caretaking in desire.
132
460054
2241
Não há zelo no desejo.
07:58
Caretaking is mightily loving. It's a powerful anti-aphrodisiac.
133
462295
5221
Zelo é amar grandiosamente. É um anti-afrodisíaco poderoso.
08:03
I have yet to see somebody who is so turned on
134
467516
2294
08:05
by somebody who needs them.
135
469810
1702
por alguém que precisa dela.
08:07
Wanting them is one thing. Needing them is a shutdown,
136
471512
3493
Desejá-la é uma coisa. Precisar dele é desestimulante,
08:10
and women have known that forever,
137
475005
1543
08:12
because anything that will bring up parenthood
138
476548
2965
porque qualquer semelhança com algo paternal
08:15
will usually decrease the erotic charge.
139
479513
3256
provavelmente diminuirá a carga erótica.
08:18
For good reasons, right?
140
482769
2084
Por boas razões, certo?
08:20
And then the third group of answers usually would be
141
484853
3253
E o terceiro grupo de respostas seria
08:24
when I'm surprised, when we laugh together,
142
488106
4545
quando estou surpreso, rimos junto,
08:28
as somebody said to me in the office today,
143
492651
2160
ou como disse para mim hoje,
08:30
when he's in his tux, so I said, you know,
144
494811
1808
quando ele veste smoking, e eu disse,
08:32
it's either the tux or the cowboy boots.
145
496619
3063
tanto faz smoking ou botas de cowboy.
08:35
But basically it's when there is novelty.
146
499682
3691
Basicamente quando há alguma novidade.
08:39
But novelty isn't about new positions. It isn't a repertoire of techniques.
147
503373
4278
08:43
Novelty is, what parts of you do you bring out?
148
507651
3535
Novidade é, quais partes suas você valoriza?
08:47
What parts of you are just being seen?
149
511186
3029
Que partes suas são vistas?
08:50
Because in some way one could say
150
514215
1939
Porque de algum modo alguém pode dizer
08:52
sex isn't something you do, eh?
151
516154
2003
08:54
Sex is a place you go. It's a space you enter
152
518157
3234
08:57
inside yourself and with another, or others.
153
521391
3305
09:00
So where do you go in sex?
154
524696
2495
Aonde você vai no sexo?
09:03
What parts of you do you connect to?
155
527191
2337
Que partes suas você se conecta?
09:05
What do you seek to express there?
156
529528
2008
O que você deseja expressar?
09:07
Is it a place for transcendence and spiritual union?
157
531536
3463
09:10
Is it a place for naughtiness and is it a place to be safely aggressive?
158
534999
4328
09:15
Is it a place where you can finally surrender
159
539327
2344
09:17
and not have to take responsibility for everything?
160
541671
3000
e não ter responsabilidade de nada?
09:20
Is it a place where you can express your infantile wishes?
161
544671
3008
09:23
What comes out there? It's a language.
162
547679
2416
O que isso revela? É uma linguagem.
09:25
It isn't just a behavior.
163
550095
2344
Não é apenas um comportamento.
09:28
And it's the poetic of that language that I'm interested in,
164
552439
2792
É pela linguagem poética que me interesso
09:31
which is why I began to explore this concept of erotic intelligence.
165
555231
4049
09:35
You know, animals have sex.
166
559280
2095
Vocês sabem, os animais fazem sexo.
09:37
It's the pivot, it's biology, it's the natural instinct.
167
561375
3431
É o ponto central, é biologia, é o instinto natural.
09:40
We are the only ones who have an erotic life,
168
564806
3280
09:43
which means that it's sexuality transformed by the human imagination.
169
568086
5918
09:49
We are the only ones who can make love for hours,
170
574004
3762
09:53
have a blissful time, multiple orgasms,
171
577766
2872
ter momentos de pura alegria, orgasmos mútiplos,
09:56
and touch nobody, just because we can imagine it.
172
580638
3905
10:00
We can hint at it. We don't even have to do it.
173
584543
2910
Nós podemos insinuar. Não precisamos fazer.
10:03
We can experience that powerful thing called anticipation,
174
587453
3432
Podemos experimentar algo poderoso chamado antecipação,
10:06
which is a mortar to desire,
175
590885
2447
que é a cereja do bolo do desejo,
10:09
the ability to imagine it, as if it's happening,
176
593332
3272
10:12
to experience it as if it's happening, while nothing is happening
177
596604
4280
10:16
and everything is happening at the same time.
178
600884
2685
e tudo está acontecendo ao mesmo tempo.
10:19
So when I began to think about eroticism,
179
603569
2530
Quando penso em erotismo,
10:21
I began to think about the poetics of sex,
180
606099
3138
penso em um sexo poético,
10:25
and if I look at it as an intelligence,
181
609237
2543
e se o vejo como uma inteligência,
10:27
then it's something that you cultivate.
182
611780
2303
então é algo que você cultiva.
10:29
What are the ingredients? Imagination, playfulness,
183
614083
4137
Quais são os ingredientes? Imaginação, jovialidade,
10:34
novelty, curiosity, mystery.
184
618220
3304
novidade, curiosidade, mistério.
10:37
But the central agent is really that piece called the imagination.
185
621524
4959
Mas o agente central é aquela peça chamada imaginação.
10:42
But more importantly, for me to begin to understand
186
626483
3081
O mais importante para que eu entenda
10:45
who are the couples who have an erotic spark,
187
629564
2758
10:48
what sustains desire, I had to go back
188
632322
2567
que sustenta o desejo, tive que voltar
10:50
to the original definition of eroticism,
189
634889
2673
à definição original de erotismo,
10:53
the mystical definition, and I went through it
190
637562
2651
a definição mística, e eu tomei
10:56
through a bifurcation by looking actually at trauma,
191
640213
3439
uma derivação, vendo realmente o trauma,
10:59
which is the other side, and I looked at it
192
643652
2658
que é o outro lado, e eu o vi
11:02
looking at the community that I had grown up in,
193
646310
2606
ao ohar para a comunidade onde cresci,
11:04
which was a community in Belgium, all Holocaust survivors,
194
648916
3612
11:08
and in my community there were two groups:
195
652528
2962
e na minha comunidade haviam dois grupos:
11:11
those who didn't die, and those who came back to life.
196
655490
3814
11:15
And those who didn't die lived often very tethered to the ground,
197
659304
3322
11:18
could not experience pleasure, could not trust,
198
662626
3590
não conseguiam experimentar prazer, confiança,
11:22
because when you're vigilant, worried, anxious,
199
666216
2761
porque quando você é vigilante, preocupado, angustiado,
11:24
and insecure, you can't lift your head
200
668977
2629
e inseguro, você não consegue erguer a cabeça
11:27
to go and take off in space and be playful and safe and imaginative.
201
671606
5464
11:32
Those who came back to life were those
202
677070
2482
Aqueles que retornaram à vida
11:35
who understood the erotic as an antidote to death.
203
679552
2661
11:38
They knew how to keep themselves alive.
204
682213
3670
Eles sabem se manter vivos.
11:41
And when I began to listen to the sexlessness of the couples that I work with,
205
685883
3968
11:45
I sometimes would hear people say, "I want more sex,"
206
689851
2853
eu os ouvia dizer, "quero mais sexo",
11:48
but generally people want better sex,
207
692704
2862
11:51
and better is to reconnect with that quality of aliveness,
208
695566
3254
11:54
of vibrancy, of renewal, of vitality, of eros, of energy
209
698820
4129
de vibração, renovação, vitalidade, Eros, energia
11:58
that sex used to afford them, or that they've hoped
210
702949
2574
12:01
it would afford them.
211
705523
1894
que seja dado.
12:03
And so I began to ask a different question.
212
707417
3027
Então comecei a fazer uma pergunta diferente.
12:06
"I shut myself off when ..." began to be the question.
213
710444
4847
"Eu me fecho quando" - assim começava a pergunta.
12:11
"I turn off my desires when ..." which is not the same question as,
214
715291
3280
"Eu abafo meus desejos quando.." que não é a mesma pergunta que
12:14
"What turns me off is ..." and "You turn me off when ..."
215
718571
3946
"o que me desestimula.."e "você me desestimula quando.."
12:18
And people began to say, "I turn myself off when
216
722517
3223
As pessoas diziam, "eu me fecho quando
12:21
I feel dead inside, when I don't like my body,
217
725740
2889
12:24
when I feel old, when I haven't had time for myself,
218
728629
3224
12:27
when I haven't had a chance to even check in with you,
219
731853
2624
12:30
when I don't perform well at work,
220
734477
1561
quando não me saio bem no trabalho,
12:31
when I feel low self esteem, when I don't have a sense of self-worth,
221
736038
3195
12:35
when I don't feel like I have a right to want, to take,
222
739233
3228
12:38
to receive pleasure."
223
742461
2440
e receber prazer."
12:40
And then I began to ask the reverse question.
224
744901
2365
Então comecei a fazer a pergunta ao contrário.
12:43
"I turn myself on when ..." Because most of the time,
225
747266
2771
"Eu me fecho quando..." Porque geralmente
12:45
people like to ask the question, "You turn me on,
226
750037
2858
as pessoas gostam de perguntar, "você me excita,
12:48
what turns me on," and I'm out of the question. You know?
227
752895
3577
12:52
Now, if you are dead inside, the other person can do a lot of things for Valentine's.
228
756472
4310
12:56
It won't make a dent. There is nobody at the reception desk.
229
760782
2800
Não vai causar efeito algum. Não há ninguém lá para responder.
12:59
(Laughter)
230
763582
1493
(Risos)
13:00
So I turn myself on when,
231
765075
2402
Eu me excito quando,
13:03
I turn my desires, I wake up when ...
232
767477
4011
13:07
Now, in this paradox between love and desire,
233
771488
4618
Neste paradoxo entre amor e desejo,
13:12
what seems to be so puzzling is that the very ingredients
234
776106
3881
13:15
that nurture love -- mutuality, reciprocity,
235
779987
4151
que nutrem o amor - interdependência, reciprocidade,
13:20
protection, worry, responsibility for the other --
236
784138
4032
proteção, preocupação, responsabilidade pelo outro -
13:24
are sometimes the very ingredients that stifle desire.
237
788170
4123
13:28
Because desire comes with a host of feelings
238
792293
4229
13:32
that are not always such favorites of love:
239
796522
3977
13:36
jealousy, possessiveness, aggression, power, dominance,
240
800499
4129
ciúmes, possessividade, agressão, poder, domínio,
13:40
naughtiness, mischief.
241
804628
1788
safadeza, ofensa.
13:42
Basically most of us will get turned on at night
242
806416
3287
13:45
by the very same things that we will demonstrate against during the day.
243
809703
3902
13:49
You know, the erotic mind is not very politically correct.
244
813605
3413
13:52
If everybody was fantasizing on a bed of roses,
245
817018
2655
13:55
we wouldn't be having such interesting talks about this.
246
819673
3437
não teríamos essa conversa.
13:59
But no, in our mind up there
247
823110
2813
Mas não, em nossa mente
14:01
are a host of things going on that we don't always know
248
825923
3747
14:05
how to bring to the person that we love,
249
829670
2087
como dizer a pessoa que amamos,
14:07
because we think love comes with selflessness
250
831757
2813
porque achamo que amor vem com abnegação
14:10
and in fact desire comes with a certain amount of selfishness
251
834570
3712
14:14
in the best sense of the word:
252
838282
1779
no melhor sentido da palavra:
14:15
the ability to stay connected to one's self
253
840061
3033
a habilidade de estar conectado consigo mesmo
14:18
in the presence of another.
254
843094
1891
na presença do outro.
14:20
So I want to draw that little image for you,
255
844985
2652
Quero formar uma imagem para vocês,
14:23
because this need to reconcile these two sets of needs,
256
847637
3709
14:27
we are born with that.
257
851346
1543
vem do nosso nascimento.
14:28
Our need for connection, our need for separateness,
258
852889
2897
Nossa necessidade de conexão, nossa necessidade de separação,
14:31
or our need for security and adventure,
259
855786
2209
nossa necessidade de segurança e aventura,
14:33
or our need for togetherness and for autonomy,
260
857995
2696
14:36
and if you think about the little kid who sits on your lap
261
860691
2744
14:39
and who is cozily nested here and very secure and comfortable,
262
863435
4492
e que está aconchegada, segura e confortáavel,
14:43
and at some point all of us need to go out into the world
263
867927
3917
14:47
to discover and to explore.
264
871844
2492
para fazer descobertas e explorar.
14:50
That's the beginning of desire,
265
874336
1517
Aí está o começo do desejo,
14:51
that exploratory needs curiosity, discovery.
266
875853
4495
essa exploração precisa de curiosidade, descoberta.
14:56
And then at some point they turn around and they look at you,
267
880348
3892
15:00
and if you tell them,
268
884240
2473
e se você disser a elas,
15:02
"Hey kiddo, the world's a great place. Go for it.
269
886713
2352
"ei querido, o mundo é um lugar bem legal. Vai nessa.
15:04
There's so much fun out there,"
270
889065
1692
Divirta-se por aí,"
15:06
then they can turn away and they can experience
271
890757
2676
então eles podem ir e experimentar
15:09
connection and separateness at the same time.
272
893433
2205
15:11
They can go off in their imagination, off in their body,
273
895638
3249
15:14
off in their playfulness, all the while knowing
274
898887
3082
em sua travessura, e sabendo
15:17
that there's somebody when they come back.
275
901969
2593
que há alguém quando eles voltarem.
15:20
But if on this side there is somebody who says,
276
904562
2311
15:22
"I'm worried. I'm anxious. I'm depressed.
277
906873
3827
"Estou preocupado. Estou angustiado. Estou com depressão.
15:26
My partner hasn't taken care of me in so long.
278
910700
2034
15:28
What's so good out there? Don't we have everything
279
912734
2516
O que está acontecendo? Não temos tudo
15:31
you need together, you and I?"
280
915250
2183
que precisamos juntos, você e eu?"
15:33
then there are a few little reactions
281
917433
2113
e daí surgem alguma reações
15:35
that all of us can pretty much recognize.
282
919546
3328
que todos nós reconhecemos.
15:38
Some of us will come back, came back a long time ago,
283
922874
4792
Alguns retornam, depois de um longo tempo,
15:43
and that little child who comes back
284
927666
2208
e a criança que volta
15:45
is the child who will forgo a part of himself
285
929874
2833
15:48
in order not to lose the other.
286
932707
2416
para que não perca o outro.
15:51
I will lose my freedom in order not to lose connection.
287
935123
3925
15:54
And I will learn to love in a certain way
288
939048
2682
Vou aprender a amar de um modo
15:57
that will become burdened with extra worry
289
941730
4200
sobrecarregado de preocupação extra
16:01
and extra responsibility and extra protection,
290
945930
3544
e responsabilidade e proteção extras,
16:05
and I won't know how to leave you
291
949474
2464
e não sei como vou deixá-lo
16:07
in order to go play, in order to go experience pleasure,
292
951938
3544
16:11
in order to discover, to enter inside myself.
293
955482
3240
descobrir, entrar dentro de mim mesmo.
16:14
Translate this into adult language.

Traduzindo isso para uma linguagem adulta.
16:17
It starts very young. It continues into our sex lives
295
961606
3620
Começa-se bem jovem. Continua por nossas vidas sexuais
16:21
up to the end.
296
965226
1515
até o fim.
16:22
Child number two comes back
297
966741
2520
Criança número 2 volta
16:25
but looks like that over their shoulder all the time.
298
969261
2805
mas fica vigiando o tempo todo.
16:27
"Are you going to be there?
299
972066
2040
"Você estará aqui?
16:30
Are you going to curse me? Are you going to scold me?
300
974106
1879
Você vai me xingar? Vai me repreender?
16:31
Are you going to be angry with me?"
301
975985
1998
Vai ficar bravo comigo?"
16:33
And they may be gone, but they're never really away,
302
977983
3619
16:37
and those are often the people that will tell you,
303
981602
2087
e essas pessoas geralmente dirão a você,
16:39
in the beginning it was super hot.
304
983689
2329
que no começo foi tudo muito quente.
16:41
Because in the beginning, the growing intimacy
305
986018
3576
16:45
wasn't yet so strong
306
989594
1898
não era tão forte,
16:47
that it actually led to the decrease of desire.
307
991492
3063
16:50
The more connected I became, the more responsible I felt,
308
994555
3719
Quanto mais conecto eu fico, mais responsável eu me sinto,
16:54
the less I was able to let go in your presence.
309
998274
3258
menos me solto em sua presença.
16:57
The third child doesn't really come back.
310
1001532
2814
A terceira criança não retorna.
17:00
So what happens, if you want to sustain desire,
311
1004346
3432
17:03
it's that real dialectic piece.
312
1007778
2240
aí está a verdadeira peça dialética.
17:05
On the one hand you want the security in order to be able to go.
313
1010018
3681
17:09
On the other hand if you can't go, you can't have pleasure,
314
1013699
3752
17:13
you can't culminate, you don't have an orgasm,
315
1017451
2980
você não consegue atingir, não tem orgasmo,
17:16
you don't get excited because you spend your time
316
1020431
2483
17:18
in the body and the head of the other and not in your own.
317
1022914
3136
17:21
So in this dilemma about reconciling
318
1026050
3720
Neste dilema sobre reconciliação
17:25
these two sets of fundamental needs,
319
1029770
2513
nesses dois conjuntos de necessidades fundamentais,
17:28
there are a few things that I've come to understand erotic couples do.
320
1032283
4385
17:32
One, they have a lot of sexual privacy.
321
1036668
2982
Primeiro, eles têm muita privacidade sexual.
17:35
They understand that there is an erotic space
322
1039650
2422
Eles entendem que existe um espaço erótico
17:37
that belongs to each of them.
323
1042072
2051
que pertence a cada um deles.
17:40
They also understand that foreplay is not something you do
324
1044123
3159
17:43
five minutes before the real thing.
325
1047282
2104
apenas cinco minutos antes da relação sexual.
17:45
Foreplay pretty much starts at the end of the previous orgasm.
326
1049386
3200
As preliminares começam no fim do último orgasmo.
17:48
They also understand that an erotic space
327
1052586
3220
Eles também entendem que o espaço erótico
17:51
isn't about, you begin to stroke the other.
328
1055806
2189
não é começar a acariciar o outro.
17:53
It's about you create a space where you leave Management Inc.,
329
1057995
3555
17:57
maybe where you leave the agile program,
330
1061550
2644
você deixa de lado o trabalho,
18:00
(Laughter)
331
1064209
1795
(Risos)
18:01
and you actually just enter that place
332
1066004
3088
e você entra naquele espaço
18:04
where you stop being the good citizen
333
1069092
2101
18:07
who is taking care of things and being responsible.
334
1071193
2664
que cuida de tudo e é responsável.
18:09
Responsibility and desire just butt heads.
335
1073857
3544
Responsabilidade e desejo são idiotas.
18:13
They don't really do well together.
336
1077401
2632
Eles não se dão bem.
18:15
Erotic couples also understand that passion waxes and wanes.
337
1080033
4199
18:20
It's pretty much like the moon. It has intermittent eclipses.
338
1084232
3569
Como a lua. Tem eclipses de vez em quando.
18:23
But what they know is they know how to resurrect it.
339
1087801
2623
Eles sabem que conseguem ressuscitá-la.
18:26
They know how to bring it back,
340
1090424
1692
Eles sabem como trazê-la de volta,
18:28
and they know how to bring it back
341
1092116
1233
e sabem como trazê-la de volta
18:29
because they have demystified one big myth,
342
1093349
2532
porque eles desmistificaram o grande mito,
18:31
which is the myth of spontaneity, which is
343
1095881
2638
que é o mito da espontaneidade,
18:34
that it's just going to fall from heaven while you're folding the laundry

that whatever is going to just happen
346

in a long-term relationship already has.
