ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Steven Cowley - Physicist
Steven Cowley directs the UK's leading fusion research center. Soon he'll helm new experiments that may make cheap fusion energy real on a commercial scale.

Why you should listen

The promise of fusion seems to have inspired more science-fiction novels than it has real developments in renewable energy, but Steven Cowley has begun to upset that balance. As director of the Culham Fusion Science Center, he's collaborating with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and researchers on the France-based ITER fusion device on projects that may lead to cheap, nearly limitless carbon-free energy.

Fusion (the process by which lightweight atoms under pressure are fused to form heavier atoms, releasing energy) has long been the Holy Grail of renewable energy, but at the moment it only occurs in the cores of stars. Yet Cowley isn't too shy to proclaim that harnessing its power on an Earthly scale is now inevitable. At UCLA, he made observations on some of the most violent phenomena in the local universe -- solar flares, storms in the Earth's magnetosphere --  and now his research is coming directly into play as he plans devices that, theoretically, would contain 100-million-degree gas using powerful magnetic fields.

NuclearNuclear energyenergia comesvem for a simplesimples reasonrazão.
70
202000
4000
03:41
The mosta maioria stableestável nucleusnúcleo is ironferro, right in the middlemeio of the periodicperiódico tablemesa.

It's a medium-sizedtamanho médio nucleusnúcleo.

É um núcleo de tamanho médio.
03:47
And you want to go towardsem direção ironferro if you want to get energyenergia.
73
212000
4000
03:51
So, uraniumurânio, whichqual is very biggrande, wants to splitDividido.
74

04:01
And you can get energyenergia out this way.
78
226000
2000
E podemos obter energia por este modo.
04:03
And indeedde fato that's exactlyexatamente what starsestrelas do.
79
228000
2000
04:05
In the middlemeio of starsestrelas, you're joiningjuntando-se hydrogenhidrogênio togetherjuntos to make heliumHélio
80
230000

and then heliumHélio togetherjuntos to make carboncarbono,

But it's a hardDifícil processprocesso to do
84
241000

04:18
because, as you know, the middlemeio of a starEstrela is quitebastante hotquente,

04:28
that's probablyprovavelmente the easiestmais fácil fusionfusão reactionreação to do.
88
253000
5000
04:33
It's betweenentre two isotopesisótopos of hydrogenhidrogênio, two kindstipos of hydrogenhidrogênio:

E ao aproximá-los, eles repelem-se.
04:53
But when you get them closefechar enoughsuficiente,

04:59
So, mosta maioria of the time they repelrepelir.
98

05:10
So, that's that processprocesso there. DeuteriumDeutério and tritiumtrítio goesvai togetherjuntos
103

Portanto, eis o processo. Deutério e trítio juntam-se

O hélio divide-se, e liberta um neutrão
05:17
and lots of energyenergia comesvem out.
106

e liberta uma quantidade enorme de energia.
05:19
If you can get something to about 150 millionmilhão degreesgraus,

05:22
things will be rattlingchocalho around so fastvelozes

isto acontecerá, e energia será libertada.
05:30
And that energyenergia is what powerspoderes fusionfusão.
111
315000
4000
05:34
And it's this reactionreação that we want to do.
112
319000
3000
05:37
There is one trickinessdelicadeza about this reactionreação.
113
322000
3000
Existe uma artimanha acerca desta reacção.
05:40
Well, there is a trickinessdelicadeza that you have to make it 150 millionmilhão degreesgraus,
114
325000
3000
05:43
but there is a trickinessdelicadeza about the reactionreação yetainda.
115
328000
3000
05:46
It's prettybonita hotquente.
116
331000
2000
É bastante quente.
05:48
The trickinessdelicadeza about the reactionreação is that
117
333000
2000
A artimanha acerca da reacção é que
05:50
tritiumtrítio doesn't existexistir in naturenatureza.
118
335000
2000
o tritio não existe na natureza.
05:52
You have to make it from something elseoutro.
119
337000
2000
05:54
And you make if from lithiumlítio. That reactionreação at the bottominferior,
120
339000
3000
E produz-se a partir do lítio. A reacção no fundo,
05:57
that's lithiumlítio 6, plusmais a neutronNeutron,
121
342000
4000
é lítio 6, mais um neutrão,
06:01
will give you more heliumHélio, plusmais tritiumtrítio.
122
346000
2000
dá-nos mais hélio, mais um trítio.
06:03
And that's the way you make your tritiumtrítio.
123
348000
2000
06:05
But fortunatelyFelizmente, if you can do this fusionfusão reactionreação,
124
350000
3000
06:08
you've got a neutronNeutron, so you can make that happenacontecer.
125
353000
4000
06:12
Now, why the hellinferno would we botherincomoda to do this?
126
