Leonard Susskind - Physicist
Leonard Susskind works on string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics and quantum cosmology at Stanford.

Why you should listen

Leonard Susskind is the Felix Bloch Professor of Physics at Stanford University. His research interests include string theory, quantum field theory, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum cosmology. He received the Pregel Award from the New York Academy of Science (1975), and the J. J. Sakurai Prize of the American Physical Society (1998) "for his pioneering contributions to hadronic string models, lattice gauge theories, quantum chromodynamics, and dynamical symmetry breaking." He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and, since 2009, has been serving as Director of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Physics.

He is a recent recipient of the Los Angeles Times Book Award in Science and Technology for The Black Hole War: My Battle with Stephen Hawking to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics.

that when heliumheliu atomsatomi touchatingere eachfiecare other, they repelse resping.

The implicationimplicarea of that is that the waveval functionfuncţie has to go to zerozero,

10:45
The other factfapt
247
630000

Celălalt fapt e că
10:47
is that the groundsol statestat, the lowestcel mai mic energyenergie statestat of a quantumcuantic systemsistem,
248
632000
3000

11:02
and he triedîncercat to writescrie down, and did writescrie down,

11:13
He wrotea scris down a simplesimplu thing.

11:44
IncidentallyDe altfel, I'll tell you what that super-powerfulSuper-puternic techniquetehnică was.
272
689000
4000
Întâmplător, vă voi spune eu care era tehnica aceea super-puternică.
11:48
It was the techniquetehnică of FeynmanFeynman diagramsdiagrame.
273
693000
3000

12:01
they were exploringexplorarea the structurestructura of the protonprotoni.
278
706000

ei explorau structura protonului.
12:04
The protonprotoni is obviouslyevident madefăcut
279
709000

Protonul este făcut în mod evident
12:06
of a wholeîntreg bunchbuchet of little particlesparticule.

12:08
This was more or lessMai puțin knowncunoscut.
281
713000
2000
12:10
And the way to analyzea analiza it was, of coursecurs, FeynmanFeynman diagramsdiagrame.
282
715000
3000
12:13
That's what FeynmanFeynman diagramsdiagrame were constructedconstruite for --
283
718000
3000
Pentru asta au fost construite diagramele Feynman--
12:16

284

12:18
The experimentsexperimente that were going on were very simplesimplu.
285
723000
2000
Experimentele care aveau loc erau foarte simple.
12:20
You simplypur şi simplu take the protonprotoni,
286
725000
2000
Luai pur şi simplu protonul
12:22
and you hitlovit it really sharplybrusc with an electronde electroni.
287
727000

12:24
This was the thing the FeynmanFeynman diagramsdiagrame were for.
288
729000
3000
12:27
The only problemproblemă
289
732000
2000
Singura problemă
12:29
was that FeynmanFeynman diagramsdiagrame are complicatedcomplicat.
290
734000
2000
a fost că diagramele Feynman sunt complicate.
12:31
They're difficultdificil integralsintegrale.
291
736000

Sunt integrale dificile.
12:33
If you could do all of them, you would have a very preciseprecis theoryteorie.
292
738000
3000
Dacă le-ai putea rezolva pe toate ai obţine o teorie foarte precisă.
12:36
But you couldn'tnu a putut; they were just too complicatedcomplicat.
293
741000
3000
Dar nu poţi; erau mult prea complicate.
12:39
People were tryingîncercat to do them.
294
744000
2000
Oamenii încercau să le facă.
12:41
You could do a one loopbuclă diagramdiagramă. Don't worryface griji about one loopbuclă.
295
746000
3000
12:44
One loopbuclă, two loopsbucle -- maybe you could do a threeTrei loopbuclă diagramdiagramă,
296
749000
3000
O buclă, două bucle-- poate vei putea face 3 bucle
12:47
but beyonddincolo that, you couldn'tnu a putut do anything.
297
752000
2000
12:49
FeynmanFeynman said, "ForgetUitaţi all of that.
298
754000

Feynman a spus: "Uită de toate astea.
