ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Lisa Bu - Passionate reader
Lisa Bu has built a career helping people find great stories to listen to. Now she tells her own story.

Why you should listen

At TED's annual staff retreat, everyone has to get up and talk about something -- either about work, or about something interesting from their own lives. In fall 2012, our own Lisa Bu prepared a talk about her love of reading. And our quiet, funny and efficient Content Distribution Manager simply brought down the house, with a story that's too good not to share. We are thrilled and proud that Lisa is the first TED staffer ever to be invited to speak on the mainstage at the TED Conference.

Born and raised in Hunan, China, Lisa Bu has been with TED since 2011. Before that, she spent seven years as a talk show producer and a digital media content director at Wisconsin Public Radio. She's also a computer programmer, with a PhD in journalism and an MBA in information systems from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as a BA in Chinese from Nanjing University in China.

That is me playing my imaginary piano.

02:10
I came to the U.S. in 1995,
39
118866
3191
1995-ci ildə ABŞ-a gəldikdə
02:14
so which books did I read here first?
40
122057
2881
ilk hansı kitabları oxudum?
02:16
Books banned in China, of course.
41
124938
3525
Əlbəttə ki, Çində qadağan olunmuş kitabları.
02:20
"The Good Earth" is about Chinese peasant life.
42
128463
3670
"Bərəkətli Torpaq" çinli kəndli həyatı haqdadır.
02:24
That's just not convenient for propaganda. Got it.
43
132133
4102
Propaqanda üçün heç bir faydası yoxdur. Başa düşürəm.
02:28
The Bible is interesting, but strange.
44
136235
3725
Bibliya maraqlıdır, bir az da qəribə.
02:31
(Laughter)
45
139960
2485
(Gülüş)
02:34
That's a topic for a different day.
46
142445
3471
Bu başqa günün mövzusudur.
02:37
But the fifth commandment gave me an epiphany:
47
145916
3295
Ancaq beşinci ehkam mənə aydınlıq gətirdi. Ehkamda
02:41
"You shall honor your father and mother."
48
149211
2979
"Ata və anana hörmət edəcəksən." deyilir.
02:44
"Honor," I said. "That's so different,
49
152190
2950
Fikirləşdim ki, "Hörmət" " İtaətdən fərqli
02:47
and better, than obey."
50
155140
1739
və daha yaxşıdr."
02:48
So it becomes my tool to climb out
51
156879
2504
Bu yolla mən Konfutsiçilikdəki
02:51
of this Confucian guilt trap
52
159383
2116
günahkarlıq hissindən qurtulub
02:53
and to restart my relationship with my parents.
53
161499
4272
valideynlərimlə münasibətimi yenidən qurmağıma şans qazandım.
02:57
Encountering a new culture also started my habit
54
165771
3022
Yeni mədəniyyətlə üzləşməyim mənə oxuduqlarımı müqayisə
03:00
of comparative reading.
55
168793
1772
etmək imkanı da verdi.
03:02
It offers many insights.
56
170565
1855
Bu sizə çox şey öyrədə bilər.
03:04
For example, I found this map out of place at first
57
172420
4780
Məsələn, bu xəritə ilk başda mənə qəribə göründü,
03:09
because this is what Chinese students grew up with.
58
177200
4885
çünki Çində biz bu xəritəni öyrənərək böyüyürük.
03:14
It had never occurred to me,
59
182085
1501
Heç vaxt fikirləşməmişdim ki,
03:15
China doesn't have to be at the center of the world.
60
183586
3135
Çinin dünyanın mərkəzində olmağı şərt deyil.
03:18
A map actually carries somebody's view.
61
186721
4253
Əslində, xəritə dünyaya baxışı göstərir.
03:22
Comparative reading actually is nothing new.
62
190974
2408
Müqayisəli mütailə yeni bir şey deyil.
03:25
It's a standard practice in the academic world.
63
193382
3304
Bu elm dünyasında standart bir praktikadır.
03:28
There are even research fields
64
196686
1468
Hətta, burada müqayisəli din və müqayisəli
03:30
such as comparative religion and comparative literature.
65
198154
3945
ədəbiyyat kimi elm sahələri də var.
03:34
Compare and contrast gives scholars
66
202099
2235
Müqayisə və qarşılaşdırma alimlərə
03:36
a more complete understanding of a topic.
67
204334
3006
mövzunun tam anlaşılmasında kömək edir.
03:39
So I thought, well, if comparative reading
68
207340
1753
Mən də fikirləşdim ki, müqayisəli mütailə
03:41
works for research, why not do it in daily life too?
69
209093
3836
tədqiqat üçün işə yarayırsa, niyə də gündəlik həyatda yaramasın?
03:44
So I started reading books in pairs.
70
212929
3375
Beləliklə, kitabları cütlüklər halında oxumağa başladım.
03:48
So they can be about people --
71
216304
1214
Deyək ki, eyni hadisədə iştirak etmiş insanlar
03:49
["Benjamin Franklin" by Walter Isaacson]["John Adams" by David McCullough] --
72
217518
883
["Benjamin Franklin" yazıcı: Walter Isaacson]["John Adams" yazıçı: David McCullough]
03:50
who are involved in the same event,
73
218401
2508
və yaxud eyni əhavalatın
03:52
or friends with shared experiences.
74
220909
2679
hissəsi olmuş dostlar haqda olsun.
03:55
["Personal History" by Katharine Graham]["The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life," by Alice Schroeder]
75
223588
1400
["Şəxsi Tarix" yazıçı: Katharine Graham] ["Qartopu: Warren Buffett və Həyat adlı İş" yazıçı: Alice Schroeder]
03:56
I also compare the same stories in different genres -- (Laughter)
76
224988
4398
Mən bir hekayəni bir neçə janrda müqayisəli oxumağı da sevirəm- (Gülüş)
04:01
[Holy Bible: King James Version]["Lamb" by Chrisopher Moore] --
77
229386
2112
[Müqəddəs Bibliya: Kral James Versiyası] ["Qoyun" yazıçı: Christopher Moore]
04:03
or similar stories from different cultures,
78
231498
3137
Yaxud Joseph Campbell-in öz gözəl əsərində etdiyi
04:06
as Joseph Campbell did in his wonderful book.["The Power of Myth" by Joseph Campbell]
79
234635
2881
kimi eyni hekayələrin müxtəlif mədəniyyətlədə təsviri.["Mifin Gücü" yazıçı: Joseph Campbell]
04:09
For example, both the Christ and the Buddha
80
237516
3393
Misal üçün; İsa peyğəmbər və Budda hər ikisi
04:12
went through three temptations.
81
240909
2433
3 cazibədən boyun qaçırmışdılar.
04:15
For the Christ, the temptations
82
243342
1802
İsa peyğəmbər üçün bunlar
04:17
are economic, political and spiritual.
83
245144
3975
iqtisadi, siyasi və ruhi idi.
04:21
For the Buddha, they are all psychological:
84
249119
4326
Budda üçün maraqlıdır ki, bunlar hamısı psixoloji idi:
04:25
lust, fear and social duty -- interesting.
85
253445
7318
ehtiras, qorxu və sosial öhdəlik.
04:32
So if you know a foreign language, it's also fun
86
260763
3039
Xarici dil bilirsinizsə sevdiyiniz kitabları iki dildə
04:35
to read your favorite books in two languages.
87
263802
1897
oxumaq da maraqlıdır.
04:37
["The Way of Chuang Tzu" Thomas Merton]["Tao: The Watercourse Way" Alan Watts]
88
265699
1252
["Chuang Tzu Yolu" yazıçı: Thomas Merton]["Tao: Su axarı" yazıçı: Alan Watts]
04:38
Instead of lost in translation, I found there is much to gain.
89
266951
3560
Tərcümədə mənanın itməsini deyil, başqa maraqlı faktları aşkar etdim.
04:42
For example, it's through translation that I realized
90
270527
4208
Məsələn, tərcümələrin köməyi ilə başa düşdüm ki,
04:46
"happiness" in Chinese literally means "fast joy." Huh!
91
274735
5973
Çin dilində xoşbəxtlik hərfi mənada "sürətli sevinc" deməkdir.
04:52
"Bride" in Chinese literally means "new mother." Uh-oh.
92
280708
5289
Çin dilində gəlin sözü "yeni ana" kimi ifadə edilir. Bəli!
04:57
(Laughter)
93
285997
3261
(Gülüş)
05:01
Books have given me a magic portal to connect with people
94
289258
5387
Kitablar keçmiş və indiki zamandakı insanlarla əlaqə saxlaya
05:06
of the past and the present.
95
294645
2645
bildiyim sehrli portal rolunu oynayır.
05:09
I know I shall never feel lonely or powerless again.
96
297290
4235
Bir daha heç vaxt yalnız yaxud gücsüz olmayacağımı bilirəm.
05:13
Having a dream shattered really is nothing
97
301525
2677
Arzunuzun reallaşmaması digər insanların çətinlikləri
05:16
compared to what many others have suffered.
98
304202
2936
ilə müqayisədə heçnədir.
05:19
I have come to believe that coming true
99
307138
2728
İnanmağa başlamışam ki, arzunun tək məqsədi
05:21
is not the only purpose of a dream.
100
309866
3280
reallaşmaq deyil.
05:25
Its most important purpose is to get us in touch

Even a shattered dream can do that for you.
104

Reallaşmamış arzu da bunu etməyə qadirdir.
05:38
So because of books, I'm here today,

Kitablara görədir ki, bu gün mən buradayam və

most of the time.

So may books be always with you.
