ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Aicha el-Wafi + Phyllis Rodriguez - 9/11 mothers
Aicha el-Wafi and Phyllis Rodriguez met around a shared tragedy -- and their friendship has become a powerful symbol for forgiveness and dialogue.

Why you should listen

Phyllis Rodriguez is an artist, a teacher and a social justice activist. On September 11, 2001, her son Greg died in the attacks on the World Trade Center. Rodriguez and her husband wrote an open letter, "Not in Our Son's Name," calling on President Bush to oppose a military response in Afghanistan.

Aicha el-Wafi is an activist with the French feminist group Ni Putes Ni Soumise, working with Muslim women. Her son, Zacarias Moussaoui, was tried in relation to the attacks on US soil, and faced the possibility of execution if convicted.

In November 2002, Phyllis Rodriguez and several other relatives of victims of the attacks were invited to meet Aicha el-Wafi. Rodriguez and el-Wafi have since appeared together throughout Europe and the US, telling their story of reconciliation and forgiveness.

She was the only mothermadre in the groupgrupo.

03:30
that she was a mothermadre, just like me.
61

3000
que ella era una madre, como yo.
03:34
I sufferedsufrió a lot as a mothermadre.
62
199000
3000
Como madre sufrí mucho.
03:41
I was marriedcasado when I was 14.
63
206000
3000
Me casé a los 14 años.
03:46
I lostperdió a childniño when I was 15,
64

3000
Perdí un hijo a los 15 años
03:51
a secondsegundo childniño when I was 16.
65
216000
3000
y un segundo hijo a los 16 años.
03:57
So the storyhistoria with ZacariasZacarias was too much really.
66
222000
4000
04:03
And I still suffersufrir,
67
228000
4000
Y todavía sufro
04:07
because my sonhijo
68
232000
2000
porque mi hijo
04:09
is like he's buriedenterrado aliveviva.
69
234000
3000
es como si estuviera enterrado vivo.
04:14
I know she really criedllorado for her sonhijo.
70
239000
5000
04:19
But she knowssabe where he is.
71
244000
3000
Pero ella sabe dónde está él.
04:28
My sonhijo, I don't know where he is.
72
253000
2000
Mi hijo, no sé dónde está.
04:30
I don't know if he's aliveviva. I don't know if he's torturedtorturado.
73
255000
2000
No sé si está vivo. No sé si lo torturaron.
04:32
I don't know what happenedsucedió to him.
74
257000
2000
No sé qué pasó con él.
04:38
So that's why I decideddecidido to tell my storyhistoria,
75
263000
2000
Por eso decidí contar mi historia
04:40
so that my sufferingsufrimiento is something positivepositivo for other womenmujer.
76
265000
3000
04:48
For all the womenmujer, all the mothersmadres that give life,

79
282000

04:59
It's up to us womenmujer,
80
284000
3000
Depende de nosotras,
05:02
because we are womenmujer,
81
287000
3000
porque somos mujeres,
05:05
because we love our childrenniños.
82
290000
2000
porque amamos a nuestros hijos.
05:13
We mustdebe be hand-in-handmano a mano
83
298000
2000
Tenemos que estar mano a mano
05:15
and do something togetherjuntos.
84
300000
2000
y hacer algo todas juntas.
05:19
It's not againsten contra womenmujer,
85
304000
2000
No es contra las mujeres
05:21
it's for us, for us womenmujer,
86
306000
2000
es por nosotras, mujeres,
05:23
for our childrenniños.
87
308000
2000
por nuestros hijos.
05:34
I talk againsten contra violenceviolencia, againsten contra terrorismterrorismo.
88

05:58
So if I can savesalvar one of the youngjoven girlschicas,
92
343000
5000
06:03
and avoidevitar that they get marriedcasado and suffersufrir as much as I did,
93
