ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Lee Smolin - Physicist
Lee Smolin is a theoretical physicist, working mainly in the field of quantum gravity. He's a founding member of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada, and the author of The Trouble With Physics.

Why you should listen

Lee Smolin's bachelor's degree was in physics and philosophy -- twin passions that have complemented one another throughout his blazing career as a theoretical physicist. As his website bio is careful to state, "His main contributions to research so far are to the field of quantum gravity." He's made contributions in many other fields, including cosmology, quantum mechanics, elementary particle physics and theoretical biology, and is the author of (among other books) The Trouble With Physics, a work that questions the very basis of the prevailing string theory.

Taking a step back from work on specific problems in physics, Smolin's work examines the scientific process itself and its place in the world. In all of his three books, Life of the CosmosThree Roads to Quantum Gravity and The Trouble with Physics, he wrestles with the philosophical implications of what contemporary physics has shown us to be true. As we come to understand more about how the world works, he asks, how will our worldview change?

Smolin is a founding member of and a researcher at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, in Ontario, Canada (whose Executive Director is 2008 TED Prize winner Neil Turok).

Lee Smolin: Science and democracy

Filmed:

The earth지구 is in the center센터, then there are these crystal결정 spheres분야,

This universe우주 is described기술 된 by being존재 a network회로망 of relationships관계.
113
374000
5000
06:31
Space공간 is just one aspect양상, so there’s no meaning의미 to say
114
379000
3000

06:36
There’s only where it is relative상대적인 to everything else그밖에 that is.
116
384000
3000
06:39
And this network회로망 of relations처지 is ever-evolving끊임없이 진화하는.
117
387000
4000
06:43
So we call it a relational관계형 universe우주.
118
391000
2000
06:45
All properties속성들 of things are about these kinds종류 of relationships관계.
119
393000
4000
06:49
And also또한, if you’re embedded내장 된 in such이러한 a network회로망 of relationships관계,
120
397000
3000
06:52
your view전망 of the world세계 has to do with what information정보
121
400000
4000

06:58
And there’s no place장소 for an omniscient전지전능 한 observer관찰자
123
406000
3000

07:06
So this is general일반 relativity상대성, this is quantum양자 theory이론.
125
414000
3000
07:09
This is also또한, if you talk to legal적법한 scholars학자,
126
417000
3000
07:12
the foundations재단 of new새로운 ideas아이디어 in legal적법한 thought.
127
420000
4000
07:16
They’re thinking생각 about the same같은 things.
128
424000
1000
07:17
And not only that, they make the analogy유추
129
425000

07:23
So there’s an interesting재미있는 discussion토론 going on there.
131
431000
3000
07:26
This last view전망 of cosmology우주론 is called전화 한 the relational관계형 view전망.
132
434000
5000
07:31
So the main본관 slogan슬로건 here is that there’s nothing outside외부 the universe우주,
133
439000
3000
07:34
which어느 means방법 that there’s no place장소
134
442000
2000

07:40
So in such이러한 a relational관계형 universe우주,
136
448000
2000
07:42
if you come upon...에 something that’s ordered주문한 and structured구조화 된,
137

138
454000

07:48
or something beautiful아름다운, like all the living생활 things,
139
456000
2000
07:50
all of you guys in the room --
140

07:53
"guys" in physics물리학, by the way, is a generic일반적인 term기간: men남자 and women여자들.
141
461000
5000
07:58
(Laughter
142
466000
3000
08:01
Then you want to know, you’re a person사람,
143
469000
3000
08:04
you want to know how is it made만든.
144
472000
2000
08:06
And in a relational관계형 universe우주 the only possible가능한 explanation설명 was, somehow어쩐지 it made만든 itself그 자체.
145
474000
5000
08:11
There must절대로 필요한 것 be mechanisms메커니즘 of self-organization자기 조직
146
479000
3000
08:14
inside내부 the universe우주 that make things.
147
482000
2000
08:16
Because there’s no place장소 to put a maker만드는 사람 outside외부,
148
484000
3000

08:23
So in a relational관계형 universe우주 we must절대로 필요한 것 have processes프로세스들 of self-organization자기 조직.
150
491000
4000
08:27
Now, Darwin다윈 taught가르쳤다 us that there are processes프로세스들 of self-organization자기 조직
151

08:33
that suffice충분하다 to explain설명 all of us and everything we see.
152
501000
4000
08:37
So it works공장. But not only that,
153
505000
2000
08:39
if you think about how natural자연스러운 selection선택 works공장,
154
507000
4000
08:43
then it turns회전 out that natural자연스러운 selection선택
155
511000
2000
08:45
would only make sense감각 in such이러한 a relational관계형 universe우주.
156
513000
4000
08:49
That is, natural자연스러운 selection선택 works공장 on properties속성들,
157
517000
4000
08:53
like fitness적합, which어느 are about relationships관계
158
521000

08:56

159
524000
3000

08:59
Darwin다윈 wouldnwouldn’t make sense감각 in an Aristotelian아리스토텔레스 universe우주,
160
527000
4000

161
531000

09:07
So a theory이론 of biology생물학 based기반 on natural자연스러운 selection선택
