We need to change the culture
in our jails and prisons,

Moramo da promenimo kulturu
u našim zatvorima,
u našim zatvorima,
00:17
especially for young inmates.
1

naročito za mlade zatvorenike.
00:19
New York state is one
of only two in the U.S.

Država Njujork je jedna
od samo dve u SAD

00:26
This culture of violence
takes these young people
takes these young people

2347
Ovom kulturom nasilja ovi mladi ljudi
00:29
and puts them in a hostile environment,
5
17297
2042
smeštaju se u neprijateljsko okruženje,
00:31
and the correctional officers pretty much
allow any and everything to go on.
allow any and everything to go on.
6
19339

a čuvari dozvoljavaju
da se dešava skoro sve.
da se dešava skoro sve.
00:35
There's not really much
for these young people to do
for these young people to do
7

Ovim mladim ljudima
ne preostaje baš puno toga
ne preostaje baš puno toga
00:38
to actually enhance their talent
and actually rehabilitate them.
and actually rehabilitate them.
8
26188

kako bi zapravo pojačali svoj talenat
i kako bi se pokušala rehabilitacija.
i kako bi se pokušala rehabilitacija.
Dok ne budemo mogli da podignemo
granicu kriminalne odgovornosti na 18,
granicu kriminalne odgovornosti na 18,
00:43
Until we can raise the age
of criminal responsibility to 18,
of criminal responsibility to 18,
9
31038
3246
00:46
we need to focus on changing
the daily lives of these young people.
the daily lives of these young people.
10
34284
3251
moramo se usredsrediti na to da promenimo
svakodnevnicu ovih mladih ljudi.
svakodnevnicu ovih mladih ljudi.
00:50
I know firsthand.
11
38155
1574
Znam to iz ličnog iskustva.
Pre nego što smo napunio 18 godina,
00:52
Before I ever turned 18,
12
40329
1579
00:53
I spent approximately
400 days on Rikers Island,
400 days on Rikers Island,
13
41908
3947
proveo sam otprilike 400 dana
na ostrvu Rajkers,
na ostrvu Rajkers,
00:57
and to add to that
14
45855
1254
i pored toga,
00:59
I spent almost 300 days
in solitary confinement,
in solitary confinement,
15
47109
3854
proveo sam skoro 300 dana u samici,
01:02
and let me tell you this:
16
50963
1697
i da vam kažem:
01:05
Screaming at the top of your lungs
all day on your cell door
all day on your cell door
17
53680
3088
kada vrištite svom snagom
na vratima svoje ćelije
na vratima svoje ćelije
01:08
or screaming at the top
of your lungs out the window,
of your lungs out the window,
18
56768
2577
i kada vrištite svom snagom
sa svog prozora,
sa svog prozora,
01:11
it gets tiring.
19
59345
1922
izmorite se.
01:13
Since there's not much for you to do
while you're in there,
while you're in there,
20
61267
2797
Pošto nema baš puno toga
što tamo možete da radite,
što tamo možete da radite,
počnete da marširate napred-nazad
po svojoj ćeliji,
po svojoj ćeliji,
01:16
you start pacing
back and forth in your cell,
back and forth in your cell,
21
64064
2283
01:18
you start talking to yourself,
22
66347
2136
počnete da pričate sami sa sobom,
01:20
your thoughts start running wild,
23
68483
1997
misli počinju da vam divljaju
01:22
and then your thoughts
become your own worst enemy.
become your own worst enemy.
24
70480
3483
i onda vam sopstvene misli
postanu najveći neprijatelj.
postanu najveći neprijatelj.
01:25
Jails are actually supposed
to rehabilitate a person,
to rehabilitate a person,
25
73963
2995
U zatvorima ljudi zapravo
treba da dožive rehabilitaciju,
treba da dožive rehabilitaciju,
01:28
not cause him or her
to become more angry,
to become more angry,
26
76958
2693
ne da postanu ljutiti,
01:31
frustrated, and feel more hopeless.
27
79651
2740
isfrustrirani i da se osećaju
još beznadežnije.
još beznadežnije.
01:34
Since there's not a discharge plan
put in place for these young people,
put in place for these young people,
28
82391
3903
Pošto za ove mlade ljude ne postoji
nikakav plan o otpuštanju,
nikakav plan o otpuštanju,
01:38
they pretty much
reenter society with nothing.
reenter society with nothing.
29
86294
3595
u društvo se vraćaju bez ičega.
01:43
And there's not really much for them to do
to keep them from recidivating.
to keep them from recidivating.
30
91168
3805
Zaista ne postoji mnogo toga
što bi ih sprečilo da ponovo pogreše.
što bi ih sprečilo da ponovo pogreše.
01:47
But it all starts with the C.O.s.
31
95823
2182
Ali sve počinje sa čuvarima.
01:50
It's very easy for some people
32
98545
1968
Za neke je veoma lako
01:52
to look at these correctional officers
as the good guys
as the good guys
33
100513
2694
da ove čuvare vide kao dobre,
01:55
and the inmates as the bad guys,
34
103207
2275
a zatvorenike kao loše momke,
01:57
or vice versa for some,
35
105482
1696
a neki to vide i obrnuto,
01:59
but it's a little more than that.
36
107178
1671
ali to nije cela priča.
02:00
See, these C.O.s are normal,
everyday people.
everyday people.
37
108849
2995
Ovi čuvari su normalni, obični ljudi.
02:03
They come from the same neighborhoods
as the population they "serve."
as the population they "serve."
38
111844
5041
Dolaze iz istih delova grada
kao i populacija kojom "upravljaju".
kao i populacija kojom "upravljaju".
02:09
They're just normal people.
39
117725
1872
Oni su samo normalni ljudi.
02:11
They're not robots, and there's
nothing special about them.
nothing special about them.
40
119597
3664
Nisu roboti, i kod njih
ne postoji ništa posebno.
ne postoji ništa posebno.
02:15
They do pretty much everything
anybody else in society does.
anybody else in society does.
41
123261
3762
Otprilike rade sve ono
što rade i drugi u društvu.
što rade i drugi u društvu.
02:19
The male C.O.s want to talk
and flirt with the female C.O.s.
and flirt with the female C.O.s.
42
127023
3899
Muški čuvari žele da pričaju
i flertuju sa ženskim čuvarima.
i flertuju sa ženskim čuvarima.
02:22
They play the little high school
kid games with each other.
kid games with each other.
43
130922
2809
Igraju se jedni sa drugima
kao u srednjoj školi.
kao u srednjoj školi.
02:25
They politic with one another.
44
133731
1904
Raspravljaju se međusobno.
02:27
And the female C.O.s gossip to each other.
45
135635
4319
A ženski čuvari tračaraju međusobno.
02:31
So I spent numerous amounts of time
with numerous amounts of C.O.s,
with numerous amounts of C.O.s,
46
139954
5990
Proveo sam dosta vremena
sa priličnim brojem čuvara
sa priličnim brojem čuvara
02:37
and let me tell you about
this one in particular named Monroe.
this one in particular named Monroe.
47
145944
2912
i ispričaću vam o jednom
koji se zvao Manro.
koji se zvao Manro.
02:40
One day he pulled me
in between the A and B doors
in between the A and B doors
48
148856
2498
Jednog dana dovukao me je
između vrata A i B
između vrata A i B
02:43
which separate the north
and south sides of our housing unit.
and south sides of our housing unit.
49
151354
3319
koja odvajaju severnu i južnu stranu
jedinice gde smo bli smešteni.
jedinice gde smo bli smešteni.
02:46
He pulled me there because I had
a physical altercation
a physical altercation
50
154673
2597
Tamo me je dovukao
jer sam imao fizičku razmiricu
jer sam imao fizičku razmiricu
02:49
with another young man in my housing unit,
51
157270
2020
sa drugim mladićem iz naše jedinice
02:51
and he felt, since there was
a female officer working on the floor,
a female officer working on the floor,
52
159290
3483
i osećao je, pošto je na tom spratu
radio i jedan ženski čuvar,
radio i jedan ženski čuvar,
02:54
that I violated his shift.
53
162773
2485
da sam mu ugrozio smenu.
02:57
So he punched me in my chest.
54
165258
1997
Pa me je udario u grudi.
02:59
He kind of knocked the wind out of me.
55
167255
2136
Izbio mi je vazduh.
03:01
I wasn't impulsive,
I didn't react right away,
I didn't react right away,
56
169391
2857
Nisam bio impulsivan,
nisam reagovao odmah,
nisam reagovao odmah,
03:04
because I know this is their house.
57
172248
2648
jer znam da je to njihova kuća.
03:06
I have no wins.
58
174896
1850
Ne mogu da pobedim.
03:08
All he has to do is pull his pin
and backup will come immediately.
and backup will come immediately.
59
176746
5428
Samo je trebalo da pritisne dugme
i odmah bi došla podrška.
i odmah bi došla podrška.
03:15
So I just gave him a look in his eyes
60
183084
2561
Stoga sam ga samo pogledao
03:17
and I guess he saw the anger
and frustration just burning,
and frustration just burning,
61
185645
3259
i pretpostavljam da je video kako mi
u očima gore bes i frustracija
u očima gore bes i frustracija
03:20
and he said to me,
62
188904
1965
i rekao mi je:
03:22
"Your eyes are going to get you
in a lot of trouble,
in a lot of trouble,
63
190869
2462
"Imaćeš problema zbog svojih očiju
03:25
because you're looking
like you want to fight."
like you want to fight."
64
193331
2506
jer izgledaš kao želiš da se tučeš."
03:27
So he commenced
to taking off his utility belt,
to taking off his utility belt,
65
195837
2369
Počeo je da skida svoj opasač,
03:30
he took off his shirt and his badge,
66
198206
2091
skinuo je košulju i značku
03:32
and he said, "We could fight."
67
200297
2037
i rekao: "Mogli bismo da se tučemo."
03:34
So I asked him, "You gonna hold it down?"
68
202334
2817
Pitao sam ga: "Nećeš da drukaš?"
03:37
Now, that's a term that's
commonly used on Rikers Island
commonly used on Rikers Island
69
205151
2913
To je izraz koji se često koristi
na ostrvu Rajkers
na ostrvu Rajkers
03:40
meaning that you're not
going to say anything to anybody,
going to say anything to anybody,
70
208064
2667
i koji znači da nikome nećeš ništa reći
03:42
and you're not going to report it.
71
210731
2227
i da to nećeš prijaviti.
03:44
He said, "Yeah, I'm gonna hold it down.
You gonna hold it down?"
You gonna hold it down?"
72
212958
3777
Rekao je: "Neću da drukam. A ti?"
03:48
I didn't even respond.
73
216735
1671
Nisam ni odgovorio.
03:50
I just punched him right in his face,
74
218406
1925
Samo sam ga odalamio u lice
03:52
and we began fighting
right then and there.
right then and there.
75
220331
2696
i počeli smo da se tučemo na licu mesta.
03:55
Towards the end of the fight,
he slammed me up against the wall,
he slammed me up against the wall,
76
223027
4320
Pri kraju tuče, priklještio me je uza zid
03:59
so while we were tussled up,
he said to me, "You good?"
he said to me, "You good?"
77
227347
3505
i dok smo se tukli, pitao me je:
"Dobro si?"
"Dobro si?"
04:02
as if he got the best of me,
78
230852
1765
kao da me je dobio,
04:04
but in my mind, I know
I got the best of him,
I got the best of him,
79
232617
2624
ali sam znao da sam ja dobio njega,
04:07
so I replied very cocky,
80
235241
2003
pa sam arogantno odgovorio:
04:09
"Oh, I'm good, you good?"
81
237244
2128
"O, ja sam dobro, a ti?"
04:11
He said, "Yeah, I'm good,
I'm good."
I'm good."
82
239372
1994
Rekao je: "Da, da, dobro sam."
04:13
We let go, he shook my hand,
said he gave me my respect,
said he gave me my respect,
83
241366
4166
Pustili smo jedan drugog, rukovali se,
rekao mi je da me je ispoštovao,
rekao mi je da me je ispoštovao,
04:17
gave me a cigarette and sent me on my way.
84
245532
3371
dao mi cigaretu i poslao me dalje.
04:21
Believe it or not, you come across
some C.O.s on Rikers Island
some C.O.s on Rikers Island
85
249723
3741
Verovali ili ne, na ostrvu Rajkers
naići ćete na neke čuvare
naići ćete na neke čuvare
04:25
that'll fight you one-on-one.
86
253464
2576
koji će se tući sa vama jedan na jedan.
04:28
They feel that they understand how it is,
87
256040
2207
Osećaju da razumeju kako je to
04:30
and they feel that I'm going
to meet you where you're at.
to meet you where you're at.
88
258247
2808
i da ću se suprotstaviti njima kako treba.
04:33
Since this is how you commonly
handle your disputes,
handle your disputes,
89
261055
2496
Pošto se rasprave ovako često rešavaju,
04:35
we can handle it in that manner.
90
263551
2079
možemo to da rešimo na taj način.
04:37
I walk away from it like a man,
you walk away from it like a man,
you walk away from it like a man,
91
265630
3274
Ja odatle odem kao muškarac,
ti odeš kao muškarac,
ti odeš kao muškarac,
04:40
and that's it.
92
268904
1421
i to je to.
04:42
Some C.O.s feel that
they're jailing with you.
they're jailing with you.
93
270325
2152
Neki čuvari se osećaju
kao da robijaju sa vama.
kao da robijaju sa vama.
04:44
This is why they have that mentality
and that attitude
and that attitude
94
272477
2570
Zato imaju taj mentalitet i stav
04:47
and they go by that concept.
95
275047
2031
i vode se tim konceptom.
04:49
In some instances, we're in it
together with the C.O.s.
together with the C.O.s.
96
277078
3465
U nekim slučajevima, u istom smo problemu
kao i čuvari.
kao i čuvari.
04:52
However, institutions need to give
these correctional officers
these correctional officers
97
280543
3074
Ipak, institucije moraju da pruže
ovim čuvarima pravilnu obuku
ovim čuvarima pravilnu obuku
04:55
proper trainings on how to properly deal
with the adolescent population,
with the adolescent population,
98
283617
3378
za to kako da se na pravi način
ophode sa populacijom adolescenata
ophode sa populacijom adolescenata
04:58
and they also need
to give them proper trainings
to give them proper trainings
99
286995
2245
i moraju da im daju pravilnu obuku
05:01
on how to deal with
the mental health population as well.
the mental health population as well.
100
289240
3537
za to kako da se ophode
sa populacijom sa mentalnim problemima.
sa populacijom sa mentalnim problemima.
05:04
These C.O.s play a big factor
in these young people's lives
in these young people's lives
101
292777
3309
Ovi čuvari igraju veliku ulogu
u životima ovih mladih ljudi
u životima ovih mladih ljudi
05:08
for x amount of time until a disposition
is reached on their case.
is reached on their case.
102
296086
3358
za X količinu vremena dok ne dođe
do razrešenja u njihovim slučajevima.
do razrešenja u njihovim slučajevima.
05:11
So why not try to mentor
these young people while they're there?
these young people while they're there?
103
299444
4657
Zašto onda ne pokušati sa mentorisanjem
ovih mladih ljudi dok su tamo?
ovih mladih ljudi dok su tamo?
05:16
Why not try to give them some type
of insight to make a change,
of insight to make a change,
104
304101
4221
Zašto ne pokušati da im se da
neka vrsta uvida u promene,
neka vrsta uvida u promene,
05:20
so once they reenter back into society,
105
308322
3461
tako da kada se vrate u društvo
05:23
they're doing something positive?
106
311783
3624
rade nešto pozitivno?
Druga velika stvar kako bi pomogli
našim tinejdžerima u zatvoru
našim tinejdžerima u zatvoru
05:28
A second big thing to help our teens
in jails is better programming.
in jails is better programming.
107
316217
5409
je bolji raspored.
05:33
When I was on Rikers Island,
the huge thing was solitary confinement.
the huge thing was solitary confinement.
108
321626
4018
Kada sam bio na ostrvu Rajkers,
samice su bile velika stvar.
samice su bile velika stvar.
05:37
Solitary confinement
was originally designed

109
325644

Samice su prvobitno osmišljene
05:40
to break a person mentally,

328373
3692
kako bi se osoba slomila
mentalno, fizički i emotivno.

Državni tužilac SAD
nedavno je objavio izveštaj
nedavno je objavio izveštaj
05:50
stating that they're going
to ban solitary confinement
to ban solitary confinement
113
338224
2525
u kome se tvrdi da će se zabraniti
upotreba samica
upotreba samica
05:52
in New York state for teens.
114
340749
2419
u državi Njujork za tinejdžere.
05:55
One thing that kept me sane while I
was in solitary confinement was reading.
was in solitary confinement was reading.
115
343698
4202
Dok sam bio u samici, ono što me je
držalo razumnim bilo je čitanje.
držalo razumnim bilo je čitanje.
05:59
I tried to educate myself
as much as possible.
as much as possible.
116
347900
2902
Pokušao sam da se obrazujem
koliko god sam mogao.
koliko god sam mogao.
06:02
I read any and everything
I could get my hands on.
I could get my hands on.
117
350802
2625
Čitao sam sve
čega sam mogao da se dočepam.
čega sam mogao da se dočepam.
06:05
And aside from that,
I wrote music and short stories.
I wrote music and short stories.
118
353427
3691
Pored toga, pisao sam
muziku i kratke priče.
muziku i kratke priče.
06:09
Some programs that I feel
would benefit our young people
would benefit our young people
119
357118
5076
Mislim da bi mladim ljudima koristili
06:14
are art therapy programs
120
362194
3051
programi terapije umetnošću
06:17
for the kids that like to draw
and have that talent,
and have that talent,
121
365245
3065
za klince koji vole da crtaju
i imaju taj talenat,
i imaju taj talenat,
06:20
and what about the young individuals
that are musically inclined?
that are musically inclined?
122
368310
3942
a šta je sa mladima
koji su skloni muzici?
koji su skloni muzici?
06:24
How about a music program for them
that actually teaches them
that actually teaches them
123
372252
2887
Na primer, muzički program
gde bi ih neko zaista naučio
gde bi ih neko zaista naučio
06:27
how to write and make music?
124
375139
2397
kako da pišu i stvaraju muziku?
06:29
Just a thought.
125
377536
1424
To je samo pomisao.
06:30
When adolescents come to Rikers Island,
126
378960
2069
Kada adolescenti dođu na ostrvo Rajkers,
06:33
C74, RNDC is the building
that they're housed in.
that they're housed in.
127
381029
4114
smeštaju se u zgradu C74, RNDC.
06:37
That's nicknamed "gladiator school,"
128
385143
3561
Ovo se naziva "školom za gladijatore",
06:40
because you have a young individual
coming in from the street
coming in from the street
129
388704
2882
jer imate mladu osobu
koja dolazi sa ulice
koja dolazi sa ulice
06:43
thinking that they're tough,
130
391586
1777
i misli da je žestoka
06:45
being surrounded by a bunch
of other young individuals
of other young individuals
131
393363
3320
i bude okružena gomilom
drugih mladih osoba
drugih mladih osoba
06:48
from all of the five boroughs,
and everybody feels that they're tough.
and everybody feels that they're tough.
132
396683
3644
iz svih pet krajeva grada,
i svi misle da su žestoki.
i svi misle da su žestoki.
06:52
So now you have a bunch of young gentlemen
poking their chests out
poking their chests out
133
400327
3995
Sada imate hrpu mladića
koji se busaju u grudi
koji se busaju u grudi
06:56
feeling that I have to prove
I'm equally as tough as you
I'm equally as tough as you
134
404322
3390
i osećaju da moraju da dokažu
da su jednako opaki
da su jednako opaki
06:59
or I'm tougher than you, you and you.
135
407712
2434
ili opasniji od tebe, tebe i tebe.
07:02
But let's be honest:
136
410146
1588
Ali budimo iskreni:
07:03
That culture is very dangerous
and damaging to our young people.
and damaging to our young people.
137
411734
4891
ta kultura je veoma opasna
i škodi našim mladima.
i škodi našim mladima.
07:08
We need to help institutions
and these teens realize
and these teens realize
138
416625
2954
Moramo da pomognemo institucijama
i ovim tinejdžerima da shvate
i ovim tinejdžerima da shvate
07:11
that they don't have to lead
the previous lifestyle that they led
the previous lifestyle that they led
139
419579
3295
da ne moraju da žive
svojim pređašnjim životom
svojim pređašnjim životom
07:14
when they were on the street,
that they can actually make a change.
that they can actually make a change.
140
422874
3437
koji su živeli na ulici,
da zapravo mogu da se promene.
da zapravo mogu da se promene.
07:18
It's sad to report
that while I was in prison,
that while I was in prison,
141
426311
3451
Tužno je reći da kada sam bio u zatvoru,
07:21
I used to hear dudes talking about
when they get released from prison,
when they get released from prison,
142
429762
4229
čuo sam tipove da pričaju o tome
šta će raditi kad izađu napolje,
šta će raditi kad izađu napolje,
07:25
what type of crimes
they're going to commit
they're going to commit
143
433991
3088
kakve zločine će činiti
07:29
when they get back in the street.
144
437079
2624
kada se vrate na ulice.
07:31
The conversations used to sound
something like this:
something like this:
145
439703
2693
Ti razgovori su zvučali pomalo ovako:
07:35
"Oh, when I hit the street,
my brother got this connection
my brother got this connection
146
443616
2827
"O, kad krenem na ulicu,
moj brat ima ovu vezu
moj brat ima ovu vezu
07:38
for this, that and the third,"
147
446443
1448
za ovo, ono i nešto treće",
07:39
or, "My man over here
got this connection for the low price.
got this connection for the low price.
148
447891
2844
ili: "Moj burazer tamo
ima vezu za nisku cenu.
ima vezu za nisku cenu.
Hajde da razmenimo informacije"
07:42
Let's exchange information,"
149
450735
1407
07:44
and, "When we hit the town,
we're going to do it real big."
we're going to do it real big."
150
452142
2783
i "Kad krenemo u grad,
ima da radimo na veliko."
ima da radimo na veliko."
07:46
I used to hear these conversations
and think to myself, "Wow,
and think to myself, "Wow,
151
454925
2859
Slušao sam ove razgovore
i u sebi sam mislio:
i u sebi sam mislio:
"Čoveče, ovi likovi stvarno pričaju
o tome da idu nazad na ulicu
o tome da idu nazad na ulicu
07:49
these dudes are really talking about
going back in the street
going back in the street
152
457784
2932
07:52
and committing future crimes."
153
460716
1532
i da počine nove zločine".
07:54
So I came up with a name for that:
154
462248
1742
Smislio sam ime za to,
07:55
I called it a go-back-to-jail-quick scheme
155
463990
2949
nazvao sam to šemom
za brzi povratak u zatvor,
za brzi povratak u zatvor,
07:58
because really, how long
is that going to last?
is that going to last?
156
466939
3584
jer stvarno, koliko će to da traje?
08:02
You get a retirement plan with that?
157
470523
2360
Je l' se uz to dobije plan za penziono?
08:04
Nice little pension? 401(k)? 403(b)?
158
472883
3458
Lepa penzijica? Beneficirani staž?
08:08
You get health insurance? Dental?
159
476341
3298
Zdravstveno, socijalno osiguranje?
08:11
(Laughter)
160
479639
1929
(Smeh)
08:13
But I will tell you this:
161
481568
1856
Ali da vam kažem ovo:
08:15
Being in jail and being in prison,
162
483424
1742
kada ste u zatvoru,
08:17
I came across some of the most
intelligent, brilliant,
intelligent, brilliant,
163
485166
3622
sretnete neke od najinteligentnijih,
najbriljantnijih
najbriljantnijih
08:20
and talented people
that I would ever meet.
that I would ever meet.
164
488788
2786
i najtalentovanijih ljudi
koje bih ikada sreo.
koje bih ikada sreo.
08:23
I've seen individuals
take a potato chip bag
take a potato chip bag
165
491574
2229
Viđao sam ljude
koji bi uzeli kesicu od čipsa
koji bi uzeli kesicu od čipsa
08:25
and turn it into the most
beautiful picture frame.
beautiful picture frame.
166
493803
2631
i od nje napravili prelep ram za slike.
08:28
I've seen individuals take
the state soap that's provided for free
the state soap that's provided for free
167
496434
3112
Viđao sam ljude koji bi uzeli
državni sapun koji dobiju besplatno
državni sapun koji dobiju besplatno
08:31
and turn them into
the most beautiful sculptures
the most beautiful sculptures
168
499546
2379
i od njega naprave prelepe skulpture
08:33
that would make Michelangelo
look like a kindergartner made it.
look like a kindergartner made it.
169
501925
4292
koje bi učinile da Mikelanđelo
izgleda kao dete iz vrtića.
izgleda kao dete iz vrtića.
U svojoj 21. godini bio sam u zatvoru
sa maksimalnim obezbeđenjem
sa maksimalnim obezbeđenjem
08:38
At the age of 21, I was in
a maximum-security prison
a maximum-security prison
170
506217
3087
koji se nazivao Popravna ustanova Elmira.
08:41
called Elmira Correctional Facility.
171
509304
1803
08:43
I just came out of the weight shack
from working out,
from working out,
172
511107
2508
Upravo sam se vratio
iz teretane gde sam vežbao
iz teretane gde sam vežbao
08:45
and I saw an older gentleman that I knew
standing in the middle of the yard
standing in the middle of the yard
173
513615
3533
i video sam starijeg gospodina
kojeg sam znao
kojeg sam znao
kako stoji nasred dvorišta
08:49
just looking up at the sky.
174
517148
1305
i gleda u nebo.
08:50
Mind you, this older gentlemen was serving
a 33-and-a-third-to-life sentence
a 33-and-a-third-to-life sentence
175
518453
4196
Imajte na umu da je ovaj gospodin
služio kaznu 33 godine do doživotne
služio kaznu 33 godine do doživotne
08:54
in which he already had served
20 years of that sentence.
20 years of that sentence.
176
522649
3432
i da je već odslužio 20 godina od toga.
08:58
So I walk up to him and I said,
177
526081
1814
Prišao sam mu i rekao:
08:59
"O.G., what's going on, man, you good?"
178
527895
1962
"Šta ima stari, jesi li dobro čoveče?"
09:01
He looked at me, and he said,
"Yeah, I'm good, young blood."
"Yeah, I'm good, young blood."
179
529857
2851
Pogledao me je i rekao:
"Da, dobro sam, sinovac."
"Da, dobro sam, sinovac."
09:04
I'm like, "So what are you looking
up at the sky for, man?
up at the sky for, man?
180
532708
2733
Pitao sam:
"A što onda gledaš ka nebu, čoveče?
"A što onda gledaš ka nebu, čoveče?
09:07
What's so fascinating up there?"
181
535441
1698
Šta je tamo tako zanimljivo?"
09:09
He said, "You look up
and you tell me what you see."
and you tell me what you see."
182
537139
2678
Rekao je: "Pogledaj gore
i reci mi šta vidiš."
i reci mi šta vidiš."
09:13
"Clouds." (Laughter)
183
541087
3528
"Oblake." (Smeh)
09:16
He said, "All right.
What else do you see?"
What else do you see?"
184
544615
2907
Rekao je: "U redu. Šta još vidiš?"
09:19
At that time, it was a plane passing by.
185
547522
2501
U tom trenutku, prolazio je avion.
09:22
I said, "All right, I see an airplane."
186
550023
2027
Rekao sam: "U redu, vidim avion."
09:24
He said, "Exactly, and what's
on that airplane?" "People."
on that airplane?" "People."
187
552050
4156
Rekao je: "Tačno, a šta je u njemu?"
"Ljudi."
"Ljudi."
09:28
"Exactly. Now where's that plane
and those people going?"
and those people going?"
188
556206
3877
"Tačno. A kuda idu ti ljudi i taj avion?"
09:32
"I don't know. You know?
189
560083
1486
"Ne znam. Ti znaš?
09:33
Please let me know if you do.
Then let me get some lottery numbers."
Then let me get some lottery numbers."
190
561569
3247
Javi mi ako znaš, pa mi daj
i neke brojeve za loto."
i neke brojeve za loto."
09:38
He said, "You're missing
the big picture, young blood.
the big picture, young blood.
191
566236
3158
Rekao je: "Ne vidiš širi plan, sinovac.
09:41
That plane with those people
is going somewhere,
is going somewhere,
192
569394
2345
Taj avion sa tim ljudima ide nekud,
09:43
while we're here stuck.
193
571739
2578
dok mi ovde tapkamo u mestu.
09:46
The big picture is this:
194
574317
1834
Ovo je širi plan:
09:48
That plane with those people
going somewhere,
going somewhere,
195
576151
2368
taj avion sa tim ljudima ide nekud,
09:50
that's life passing us by
while we behind these walls, stuck."
while we behind these walls, stuck."
196
578519
4451
to je život koji prolazi pored nas
dok smo zaglavljeni među ovim zidinama."
dok smo zaglavljeni među ovim zidinama."
09:58
Ever since that day,
197
586252
2066
Od tog dana,
10:00
that sparked something in my mind
and made me know I had to make a change.
and made me know I had to make a change.
198
588318
4179
to je pokrenulo nešto u mom umu
i znao sam da moram da promenim nešto.
i znao sam da moram da promenim nešto.
10:04
Growing up, I was always
a good, smart kid.
a good, smart kid.
199
592497
3297
Dok sam rastao, uvek sam bio
dobar, pametan klinac.
dobar, pametan klinac.
10:07
Some people would say
I was a little too smart for my own good.
I was a little too smart for my own good.
200
595794
4949
Neki bi rekli da sam bio previše pametan
za svoje dobro.
za svoje dobro.
10:12
I had dreams of becoming
an architect or an archaeologist.
an architect or an archaeologist.
201
600743
5547
Sanjao sam da postanem
arhitekta ili arheolog.
arhitekta ili arheolog.
10:18
Currently, I'm working
at the Fortune Society,
at the Fortune Society,
202
606290
2183
Trenutno radim u "Fortune Society"
10:20
which is a reentry program,
203
608473
1749
što je program vraćanja u društvo
10:22
and I work with people as a case manager
that are at high risk for recidivism.
that are at high risk for recidivism.
204
610222
4543
i radim sa ljudima koji imaju
visok rizik vraćanja zločinu.
visok rizik vraćanja zločinu.
10:26
So I connect them
with the services that they need
with the services that they need
205
614765
2406
Povezujem ih i pružam im potrebne usluge
10:29
once they're released from jail and prison
206
617171
2029
kada ih puste iz zatvora
10:31
so they can make a positive transition
back into society.
back into society.
207
619200
3126
tako da mogu da naprave
pozitivan prelaz u društvo.
pozitivan prelaz u društvo.
10:34
If I was to see my 15-year-old self today,
208
622326
2795
Kada bih danas video sebe sa 15 godina,
10:37
I would sit down and talk to him
and try to educate him
and try to educate him
209
625121
2971
seo bih i popričao s njime
i pokušao da ga obrazujem
i pokušao da ga obrazujem
10:40
and I would let him know,
"Listen, this is me. I'm you.
"Listen, this is me. I'm you.
210
628092
3945
i rekao bih mu:
"Slušaj, ovo sam ja. Ja sam ti.
"Slušaj, ovo sam ja. Ja sam ti.
10:44
This is us. We are one.
211
632037
2394
Ovo smo mi. Jedno smo.
10:46
Everything that you're about to do,
I know what you're gonna do
I know what you're gonna do
212
634431
3042
Znam sve što ćeš da uradiš
10:49
before you do it because I already did it,
213
637473
2624
pre nego što kreneš
jer sam to već uradio."
jer sam to već uradio."
10:52
and I would encourage him
not to hang out with x, y and z people.
not to hang out with x, y and z people.
214
640097
3637
Rekao bih mu da se ne druži
sa nekim ljudima,
sa nekim ljudima,
10:55
I would tell him not to be
in such-and-such place.
in such-and-such place.
215
643734
2806
da ne ide na određena mesta.
10:58
I would tell him,
keep your behind in school, man,
keep your behind in school, man,
216
646540
2376
Rekao bih mu da se posveti školi,
11:00
because that's where you need to be,
217
648916
1920
jer tamo treba da bude,
11:02
because that's what's going
to get you somewhere in life.
to get you somewhere in life.
218
650836
2704
jer je to ono što će te odvesti
negde u životu.
negde u životu.
11:05
This is the message
that we should be sharing
that we should be sharing
219
653540
2163
Ovo je poruka koju treba da delimo
11:07
with our young men and young women.
220
655703
1873
sa našim mladima.
11:09
We shouldn't be treating them as adults
and putting them in cultures of violence
and putting them in cultures of violence
221
657576
3928
Ne treba da se prema njima ophodimo
kao prema odraslima i da ih stavljamo
kao prema odraslima i da ih stavljamo
11:13
that are nearly impossible
for them to escape.
for them to escape.
222
661504
2699
u kulture nasilja iz kojih je
skoro nemoguće pobeći.
skoro nemoguće pobeći.
11:16
Thank you.
223
664203
2065
Hvala vam.
11:18
(Applause)
224
666268
3854

Why you should listen
At the Fortune Society, Ismael Nazario helps former inmates from New York's Rikers Island jail reintegrate into society after their release. The issue is close to home for Nazario: When he was just shy of eighteen he was arrested for robbery and sent to Rikers Island, where he spent 300 days in solitary confinement before he was ever convicted of a crime. Now as part of the I-CAN (Individualized Correction Achievement Network) program, he helps those at high risk for recidivism get jobs and stay out of jail and prison.
