We need to change the culture
in our jails and prisons,
in our jails and prisons,

Dužni smo promijeniti
kulturu naših zatvora,
kulturu naših zatvora,
00:17
especially for young inmates.
1
5013
2507
osobito za mlade zatvorenike.
00:19
New York state is one
of only two in the U.S.
of only two in the U.S.

Njujorški zatvor jedan je od dvaju u SAD-u
00:21
that automatically arrests and tries
16- to 17-year-olds as adults.
16- to 17-year-olds as adults.

koji automatski uhićuju i sude
16 i 17-ogodišnjacima kao odraslima.
16 i 17-ogodišnjacima kao odraslima.
00:26
This culture of violence
takes these young people
takes these young people
4
14950
2347
ta kultura nasilja uzima mlade ljude
00:29
and puts them in a hostile environment,
5
17297
2042
i stavlja ih u neprijateljsko okruženje,
00:31
and the correctional officers pretty much
allow any and everything to go on.
allow any and everything to go on.
6
19339
4042
a zatvorski čuvari dopuštaju
da se svašta događa.
da se svašta događa.
00:35
There's not really much
for these young people to do
for these young people to do
7
23381
2807
Nema puno toga što ti
mladi ljudi mogu učiniti
mladi ljudi mogu učiniti
00:38
to actually enhance their talent
and actually rehabilitate them.
and actually rehabilitate them.
8
26188
3530
da bi unaprijedili svoje talente
i uistinu se rehabilitirali.
i uistinu se rehabilitirali.
00:43
Until we can raise the age
of criminal responsibility to 18,
of criminal responsibility to 18,
9
31038
3246
Dok ne podignemo granicu za
kriminalnu odgovornost na 18 godina,
kriminalnu odgovornost na 18 godina,
00:46
we need to focus on changing
the daily lives of these young people.
the daily lives of these young people.
10
34284
3251
moramo se skoncentrirati na
mijenjanje dnevne rutine ovih mladih.
mijenjanje dnevne rutine ovih mladih.
00:50
I know firsthand.
11
38155
1574
Znam to iz prve ruke.
00:52
Before I ever turned 18,
12
40329
1579
Prije no što sam napunio 18,
00:53
I spent approximately
400 days on Rikers Island,
400 days on Rikers Island,
13
41908
3947
proveo sam 400-tinjak dana
na Rikers Islandu,
na Rikers Islandu,
00:57
and to add to that
14
45855
1254
usto
proveo sam skoro tristo dana u samici
00:59
I spent almost 300 days
in solitary confinement,
in solitary confinement,
15
47109
3854
01:02
and let me tell you this:
16
50963
1697
i reći ću vam ovo:
01:05
Screaming at the top of your lungs
all day on your cell door
all day on your cell door
17
53680
3088
Kad vrištiš iz sveg glasa na vrata samice
01:08
or screaming at the top
of your lungs out the window,
of your lungs out the window,
18
56768
2577
ili vrištiš iz sveg glasa kroz prozor,
01:11
it gets tiring.
19
59345
1922
umoriš se.
01:13
Since there's not much for you to do
while you're in there,
while you're in there,
20
61267
2797
Budući da nemaš
baš neke zanimacije dok si tamo,
baš neke zanimacije dok si tamo,
01:16
you start pacing
back and forth in your cell,
back and forth in your cell,
21
64064
2283
počneš šetkati ćelijom gore-dolje,
01:18
you start talking to yourself,
22
66347
2136
pričati sam sa sobom,
01:20
your thoughts start running wild,
23
68483
1997
misli ti poblesave
01:22
and then your thoughts
become your own worst enemy.
become your own worst enemy.
24
70480
3483
i postanu tvoj najgori neprijatelj.
01:25
Jails are actually supposed
to rehabilitate a person,
to rehabilitate a person,
25
73963
2995
Zatvori su namijenjeni za rehabilitaciju
osoba,
osoba,
01:28
not cause him or her
to become more angry,
to become more angry,
26
76958
2693
a ne za dodatno razbješnjivanje i
01:31
frustrated, and feel more hopeless.
27
79651
2740
frustriranje, niti za povećanje
osjećaja bespomoćnosti.
osjećaja bespomoćnosti.
01:34
Since there's not a discharge plan
put in place for these young people,
put in place for these young people,
28
82391
3903
Budući da nema nikakvog plana otpuštanja
za ove mlade ljude,
za ove mlade ljude,
01:38
they pretty much
reenter society with nothing.
reenter society with nothing.
29
86294
3595
oni se uglavnom u društvo vrate
bez ičega.
bez ičega.
01:43
And there's not really much for them to do
to keep them from recidivating.
to keep them from recidivating.
30
91168
3805
I malo toga može ih odvratiti
od ponavljanja zločina.
od ponavljanja zločina.
01:47
But it all starts with the C.O.s.
31
95823
2182
Ali sve počinje sa zatvorskim čuvarima.
01:50
It's very easy for some people
32
98545
1968
Nekim je ljudima iznimno lako
01:52
to look at these correctional officers
as the good guys
as the good guys
33
100513
2694
zatvorske čuvare smatrati dobricama,
01:55
and the inmates as the bad guys,
34
103207
2275
a zatvorenike zločestim dečkima
01:57
or vice versa for some,
35
105482
1696
ili obrnuto za neke,
01:59
but it's a little more than that.
36
107178
1671
ali nije to samo tako.
02:00
See, these C.O.s are normal,
everyday people.
everyday people.
37
108849
2995
Ti su čuvari normalni, obični ljudi.
02:03
They come from the same neighborhoods
as the population they "serve."
as the population they "serve."
38
111844
5041
Dolaze iz istih kvartova
poput populacije koju "služe" .
poput populacije koju "služe" .
02:09
They're just normal people.
39
117725
1872
Oni su obični ljudi.
02:11
They're not robots, and there's
nothing special about them.
nothing special about them.
40
119597
3664
Nisu roboti i nisu ni po čemu posebni.
02:15
They do pretty much everything
anybody else in society does.
anybody else in society does.
41
123261
3762
Rade više-manje sve što i ostatak društva.
02:19
The male C.O.s want to talk
and flirt with the female C.O.s.
and flirt with the female C.O.s.
42
127023
3899
Muški zatvorenici žele razgovarati
i nabacivati se ženskim zatvorenicima.
i nabacivati se ženskim zatvorenicima.
02:22
They play the little high school
kid games with each other.
kid games with each other.
43
130922
2809
Igraju srednjoškolske dječje igre
jedni s drugima.
jedni s drugima.
02:25
They politic with one another.
44
133731
1904
Nadmudruju se jedni s drugima.
02:27
And the female C.O.s gossip to each other.
45
135635
4319
I ženske zatvorenice tračaju jedne druge.
02:31
So I spent numerous amounts of time
with numerous amounts of C.O.s,
with numerous amounts of C.O.s,
46
139954
5990
Proveo sam jako puno vremena s
brojnim zatvorskim čuvarima
brojnim zatvorskim čuvarima
02:37
and let me tell you about
this one in particular named Monroe.
this one in particular named Monroe.
47
145944
2912
i ispričat ću vam priču o jednom Monroeu.
02:40
One day he pulled me
in between the A and B doors
in between the A and B doors
48
148856
2498
Jednog me dana gurnuo među A i B vrata
02:43
which separate the north
and south sides of our housing unit.
and south sides of our housing unit.
49
151354
3319
koja odvajaju sjevernu
i južnu stranu odjeljenja.
i južnu stranu odjeljenja.
02:46
He pulled me there because I had
a physical altercation
a physical altercation
50
154673
2597
Odvukao me tamo jer sam
bio upleten u fizički sukob
bio upleten u fizički sukob
02:49
with another young man in my housing unit,
51
157270
2020
s drugim mladićem u našem odjeljenju.
02:51
and he felt, since there was
a female officer working on the floor,
a female officer working on the floor,
52
159290
3483
On je mislio da je, budući da je
za taj kat bila zadužena čuvarica,
za taj kat bila zadužena čuvarica,
02:54
that I violated his shift.
53
162773
2485
da sam naštetio njegovoj smjeni.
Udario me u prsa.
02:57
So he punched me in my chest.
54
165258
1997
02:59
He kind of knocked the wind out of me.
55
167255
2136
Izbacio je zrak iz njih.
03:01
I wasn't impulsive,
I didn't react right away,
I didn't react right away,
56
169391
2857
Nisam bio impulzivan,
nisam odmah reagirao
nisam odmah reagirao
jer sam znao da je to njihova kuća.
03:04
because I know this is their house.
57
172248
2648
03:06
I have no wins.
58
174896
1850
Nisam imao pravo ni na što.
03:08
All he has to do is pull his pin
and backup will come immediately.
and backup will come immediately.
59
176746
5428
Samo je trebao zazviždati
i potpora bi mu stigla iste sekunde.
i potpora bi mu stigla iste sekunde.
03:15
So I just gave him a look in his eyes
60
183084
2561
Samo sam ga pogledao u oči
03:17
and I guess he saw the anger
and frustration just burning,
and frustration just burning,
61
185645
3259
i valjda je vidio ljutnju i
frustraciju koja je u meni ključala
frustraciju koja je u meni ključala
03:20
and he said to me,
62
188904
1965
i rekao mi je:
03:22
"Your eyes are going to get you
in a lot of trouble,
in a lot of trouble,
63
190869
2462
"Tvoje će te oči uvaliti
u brojne probleme,
u brojne probleme,
03:25
because you're looking
like you want to fight."
like you want to fight."
64
193331
2506
izgledaš kao da se želiš tući."
03:27
So he commenced
to taking off his utility belt,
to taking off his utility belt,
65
195837
2369
Počeo je skidati radni remen,
03:30
he took off his shirt and his badge,
66
198206
2091
skinuo je majicu i značku
03:32
and he said, "We could fight."
67
200297
2037
i rekao: "Možemo se tući."
03:34
So I asked him, "You gonna hold it down?"
68
202334
2817
Upitao sam ga: "Hoćeš li to razglasiti?"
03:37
Now, that's a term that's
commonly used on Rikers Island
commonly used on Rikers Island
69
205151
2913
E sad, to je učestao termin
na Rikers Islandu
na Rikers Islandu
03:40
meaning that you're not
going to say anything to anybody,
going to say anything to anybody,
70
208064
2667
koji znači da nikome ništa nećeš reći
03:42
and you're not going to report it.
71
210731
2227
i nećeš to prijaviti.
03:44
He said, "Yeah, I'm gonna hold it down.
You gonna hold it down?"
You gonna hold it down?"
72
212958
3777
Rekao je: "Da, neću to razglasiti.
Hoćeš li ti?"
Hoćeš li ti?"
03:48
I didn't even respond.
73
216735
1671
Nisam ni odgovorio.
03:50
I just punched him right in his face,
74
218406
1925
Samo sam ga zviznuo šakom u lice
03:52
and we began fighting
right then and there.
right then and there.
75
220331
2696
i odmah smo se počeli tući.
03:55
Towards the end of the fight,
he slammed me up against the wall,
he slammed me up against the wall,
76
223027
4320
Kad je tuča bila pri kraju,
prislonio me uza zid
prislonio me uza zid
03:59
so while we were tussled up,
he said to me, "You good?"
he said to me, "You good?"
77
227347
3505
i dok smo bili u klinču,
pitao me jesam li dobro,
pitao me jesam li dobro,
04:02
as if he got the best of me,
78
230852
1765
kao da me porazio,
04:04
but in my mind, I know
I got the best of him,
I got the best of him,
79
232617
2624
ali ja znam da sam ja porazio njega,
04:07
so I replied very cocky,
80
235241
2003
stoga sam umišljeno odgovorio:
04:09
"Oh, I'm good, you good?"
81
237244
2128
"Dobro sam. Jesi li ti?"
04:11
He said, "Yeah, I'm good,
I'm good."
I'm good."
82
239372
1994
Rekao je: "Da, dobro sam, dobro sam."
04:13
We let go, he shook my hand,
said he gave me my respect,
said he gave me my respect,
83
241366
4166
Pustili smo jedan drugoga, rukovali se,
rekao mi je da me poštuje,
rekao mi je da me poštuje,
04:17
gave me a cigarette and sent me on my way.
84
245532
3371
dao mi je cigaretu i rekao mi da idem.
04:21
Believe it or not, you come across
some C.O.s on Rikers Island
some C.O.s on Rikers Island
85
249723
3741
Vjerovali ili ne, u Rikers Islandu
naići ćete na čuvare
naići ćete na čuvare
04:25
that'll fight you one-on-one.
86
253464
2576
koji će se s vama potući jedan-na-jedan.
04:28
They feel that they understand how it is,
87
256040
2207
Misle da razumiju kako je to
04:30
and they feel that I'm going
to meet you where you're at.
to meet you where you're at.
88
258247
2808
i misle da ćemo se naći na pola puta
04:33
Since this is how you commonly
handle your disputes,
handle your disputes,
89
261055
2496
budući da se ovako
inače rješavaju sporovi,
inače rješavaju sporovi,
04:35
we can handle it in that manner.
90
263551
2079
tako ih možemo riješiti.
04:37
I walk away from it like a man,
you walk away from it like a man,
you walk away from it like a man,
91
265630
3274
Ja tome okrenem leđa kao muškarac,
ti okreneš leđa tome kao muškarac
ti okreneš leđa tome kao muškarac
04:40
and that's it.
92
268904
1421
i to je to.
04:42
Some C.O.s feel that
they're jailing with you.
they're jailing with you.
93
270325
2152
Neki čuvari misle da su zatvoreni s vama.
04:44
This is why they have that mentality
and that attitude
and that attitude
94
272477
2570
Zato imaju taj mentalitet i taj stav
04:47
and they go by that concept.
95
275047
2031
i vode se tom idejom.
04:49
In some instances, we're in it
together with the C.O.s.
together with the C.O.s.
96
277078
3465
U nekim slučajevima,
u tome smo zajedno s čuvarima.
u tome smo zajedno s čuvarima.
04:52
However, institutions need to give
these correctional officers
these correctional officers
97
280543
3074
No institucije čuvarima trebaju pružiti
04:55
proper trainings on how to properly deal
with the adolescent population,
with the adolescent population,
98
283617
3378
adekvatnu obuku kako bi se mogli
nositi s adolescentima,
nositi s adolescentima,
04:58
and they also need
to give them proper trainings
to give them proper trainings
99
286995
2245
a trebaju im pružiti i adekvatnu obuku
05:01
on how to deal with
the mental health population as well.
the mental health population as well.
100
289240
3537
kako da se nose s mentalno oboljelima.
05:04
These C.O.s play a big factor
in these young people's lives
in these young people's lives
101
292777
3309
Ti čuvari igraju veliku ulogu
u životu ovih mladih ljudi
u životu ovih mladih ljudi
05:08
for x amount of time until a disposition
is reached on their case.
is reached on their case.
102
296086
3358
na određeno vrijeme dok se
ne odluči o njihovom slučaju.
ne odluči o njihovom slučaju.
05:11
So why not try to mentor
these young people while they're there?
these young people while they're there?
103
299444
4657
Zašto onda ne pokušati biti mentor
tim mladim ljudima dok su tamo?
tim mladim ljudima dok su tamo?
05:16
Why not try to give them some type
of insight to make a change,
of insight to make a change,
104
304101
4221
Zašto im ne pomoći da se promijene,
05:20
so once they reenter back into society,
105
308322
3461
tako da kad se vrate u društvo,
05:23
they're doing something positive?
106
311783
3624
rade nešto pozitivno?
05:28
A second big thing to help our teens
in jails is better programming.
in jails is better programming.
107
316217
5409
Ono što bi još moglo pomoći mladima
u zatvorima jest bolje programiranje.
u zatvorima jest bolje programiranje.
05:33
When I was on Rikers Island,
the huge thing was solitary confinement.

108
321626

Kad sam bio na Rikers Islandu,
bili su poznati po samicama.

05:37
Solitary confinement

Samice su originalno osmišljene

110

kako bi osobu slomile mentalno,
fizički i emocionalno.
fizički i emocionalno.
05:44
That's what it was designed for.

05:55
One thing that kept me sane while I
was in solitary confinement was reading.
was in solitary confinement was reading.
115
343698
4202
Ono što mi je pomoglo da ostanem normalan
u samici bilo je čitanje.
u samici bilo je čitanje.
05:59
I tried to educate myself
as much as possible.
as much as possible.
116
347900
2902
Pokušao sam se što više obrazovati.
06:02
I read any and everything
I could get my hands on.
I could get my hands on.
117
350802
2625
Čitao sam sve što mi je došlo pod ruku.
06:05
And aside from that,
I wrote music and short stories.
I wrote music and short stories.
118
353427
3691
A osim toga pisao sam
kratke priče i glazbu.
kratke priče i glazbu.
06:09
Some programs that I feel
would benefit our young people
would benefit our young people
119
357118
5076
Neki od programa za koje mislim da bi
pomogli našim mladima su
pomogli našim mladima su
06:14
are art therapy programs
120
362194
3051
programi umjetničke terapije
06:17
for the kids that like to draw
and have that talent,
and have that talent,
121
365245
3065
za djecu koja vole crtati
i koja su talentirana za to.
i koja su talentirana za to.
06:20
and what about the young individuals
that are musically inclined?
that are musically inclined?
122
368310
3942
A što s onim mladima
kojima leži glazba?
kojima leži glazba?
06:24
How about a music program for them
that actually teaches them
that actually teaches them
123
372252
2887
Možda glazbeni program
koji bi ih zapravo učio
koji bi ih zapravo učio
06:27
how to write and make music?
124
375139
2397
pisati glazbu i skladati je?
06:29
Just a thought.
125
377536
1424
To je samo ideja.
06:30
When adolescents come to Rikers Island,
126
378960
2069
Kada adolescenti dođu na Rikers Island,
06:33
C74, RNDC is the building
that they're housed in.
that they're housed in.
127
381029
4114
C74, RNDC je zgrada u kojoj su smješteni.
06:37
That's nicknamed "gladiator school,"
128
385143
3561
Od milja zvana "gladijatorska škola"
06:40
because you have a young individual
coming in from the street
coming in from the street
129
388704
2882
jer imate mladu osobu koja dolazi s ulice
06:43
thinking that they're tough,
130
391586
1777
misleći da je opasna,
06:45
being surrounded by a bunch
of other young individuals
of other young individuals
131
393363
3320
okružena gomilom drugih mladih ljudi
06:48
from all of the five boroughs,
and everybody feels that they're tough.
and everybody feels that they're tough.
132
396683
3644
iz svih pet kvartova
i svi misle da su jako opasni.
i svi misle da su jako opasni.
06:52
So now you have a bunch of young gentlemen
poking their chests out
poking their chests out
133
400327
3995
I sad tu imate gomilu mladića
koji dižu nos u oblake
koji dižu nos u oblake
06:56
feeling that I have to prove
I'm equally as tough as you
I'm equally as tough as you
134
404322
3390
misleći da moraju dokazati da su
jednako opasni kao ti
jednako opasni kao ti
06:59
or I'm tougher than you, you and you.
135
407712
2434
ili da su opasniji od svakog drugog.
07:02
But let's be honest:
136
410146
1588
No budimo iskreni:
07:03
That culture is very dangerous
and damaging to our young people.
and damaging to our young people.
137
411734
4891
takva kultura veoma je opasna
i štetna za naše mlade ljude.
i štetna za naše mlade ljude.
07:08
We need to help institutions
and these teens realize
and these teens realize
138
416625
2954
Moramo pomoći institucijama
i mladima da shvate
i mladima da shvate
07:11
that they don't have to lead
the previous lifestyle that they led
the previous lifestyle that they led
139
419579
3295
da ne moraju živjeti životima
kakve su živjeli
kakve su živjeli
07:14
when they were on the street,
that they can actually make a change.
that they can actually make a change.
140
422874
3437
dok su bili na ulicama,
da se uistinu mogu promijeniti.
da se uistinu mogu promijeniti.
07:18
It's sad to report
that while I was in prison,
that while I was in prison,
141
426311
3451
Žao mi je što moram reći
da dok sam bio u zatvoru,
da dok sam bio u zatvoru,
07:21
I used to hear dudes talking about
when they get released from prison,
when they get released from prison,
142
429762
4229
čuo sam tipove kako pričaju
što će raditi kad ih konačno puste,
što će raditi kad ih konačno puste,
07:25
what type of crimes
they're going to commit
they're going to commit
143
433991
3088
kakve će zločine počinjavati
07:29
when they get back in the street.
144
437079
2624
kad se vrate na ulicu.
07:31
The conversations used to sound
something like this:
something like this:
145
439703
2693
Ti bi razgovori zvučali ovako nekako:
07:35
"Oh, when I hit the street,
my brother got this connection
my brother got this connection
146
443616
2827
"Jao, kad se vratim na ulicu,
moj je brat našao neku štelu
moj je brat našao neku štelu
07:38
for this, that and the third,"
147
446443
1448
za ovo, ono i još nešto."
07:39
or, "My man over here
got this connection for the low price.
got this connection for the low price.
148
447891
2844
Ili: "Moj nam tip
može srediti nižu cijenu.
može srediti nižu cijenu.
07:42
Let's exchange information,"
149
450735
1407
Razmijenimo podatke."
07:44
and, "When we hit the town,
we're going to do it real big."
we're going to do it real big."
150
452142
2783
Ili: "Kad se vratimo na ulice,
napravit ćemo nešto veliko."
napravit ćemo nešto veliko."
07:46
I used to hear these conversations
and think to myself, "Wow,
and think to myself, "Wow,
151
454925
2859
Kad bih takvo što čuo,
pomislio bih: "Jao,
pomislio bih: "Jao,
07:49
these dudes are really talking about
going back in the street
going back in the street
152
457784
2932
ovi tipovi stvarno pričaju o tome
kako će se vratiti na ulice
kako će se vratiti na ulice
07:52
and committing future crimes."
153
460716
1532
i činit će nove zločine."
07:54
So I came up with a name for that:
154
462248
1742
Smislio sam ime za tu pojavu:
07:55
I called it a go-back-to-jail-quick scheme
155
463990
2949
brz povratak u zatvor.
07:58
because really, how long
is that going to last?
is that going to last?
156
466939
3584
Zato što to zasigurno
ne može dugo potrajati.
ne može dugo potrajati.
08:02
You get a retirement plan with that?
157
470523
2360
Dobiješ li uz to i plan za mirovinu?
08:04
Nice little pension? 401(k)? 403(b)?
158
472883
3458
Lijepu malu mirovinu? 401 (k)? 403 (b)?
08:08
You get health insurance? Dental?
159
476341
3298
Zdravstveno osiguranje? Zubara?
08:11
(Laughter)
160
479639
1929
(Smijeh)
08:13
But I will tell you this:
161
481568
1856
Ali ovo ću vam reći:
08:15
Being in jail and being in prison,
162
483424
1742
u zatvoru sam
08:17
I came across some of the most
intelligent, brilliant,
intelligent, brilliant,
163
485166
3622
naišao na najinteligentnije,
najbriljantnije
najbriljantnije
08:20
and talented people
that I would ever meet.
that I would ever meet.
164
488788
2786
i najtalentiranije ljude koje sam
ikada upoznao.
ikada upoznao.
08:23
I've seen individuals
take a potato chip bag
take a potato chip bag
165
491574
2229
Vidio sam pojedince
kako od vrećice od čipsa
kako od vrećice od čipsa
08:25
and turn it into the most
beautiful picture frame.
beautiful picture frame.
166
493803
2631
izrađuju predivne okvire za slike.
08:28
I've seen individuals take
the state soap that's provided for free
the state soap that's provided for free
167
496434
3112
Vidio sam ljude koji su od sapuna
08:31
and turn them into
the most beautiful sculptures
the most beautiful sculptures
168
499546
2379
radili predivne skulpture
08:33
that would make Michelangelo
look like a kindergartner made it.
look like a kindergartner made it.
169
501925
4292
koje bi i Michelangela posramile.
08:38
At the age of 21, I was in
a maximum-security prison
a maximum-security prison
170
506217
3087
S 21 godinom bio sam
u najstrože čuvanom zatvoru
u najstrože čuvanom zatvoru
08:41
called Elmira Correctional Facility.
171
509304
1803
zvanom Popravni dom Elmira.
08:43
I just came out of the weight shack
from working out,
from working out,
172
511107
2508
Baš sam se vratio s treninga
08:45
and I saw an older gentleman that I knew
standing in the middle of the yard
standing in the middle of the yard
173
513615
3533
i vidio poznatog starijeg gospodina
kako stoji nasred dvorišta
kako stoji nasred dvorišta
08:49
just looking up at the sky.
174
517148
1305
i gleda nebo.
08:50
Mind you, this older gentlemen was serving
a 33-and-a-third-to-life sentence
a 33-and-a-third-to-life sentence
175
518453
4196
Pazite, taj je stariji gospodin
služio 33 godine i tri doživotne kazne,
služio 33 godine i tri doživotne kazne,
08:54
in which he already had served
20 years of that sentence.
20 years of that sentence.
176
522649
3432
a dotad je već odslužio 20 godina kazne.
08:58
So I walk up to him and I said,
177
526081
1814
Prišao sam mu i rekao:
08:59
"O.G., what's going on, man, you good?"
178
527895
1962
"O.G, što ima, kompa, jesi dobro?"
09:01
He looked at me, and he said,
"Yeah, I'm good, young blood."
"Yeah, I'm good, young blood."
179
529857
2851
Pogledao me i rekao:
"Dobro sam, mladiću."
"Dobro sam, mladiću."
09:04
I'm like, "So what are you looking
up at the sky for, man?
up at the sky for, man?
180
532708
2733
Rekoh: "Zašto gledaš nebo?
Što ima tamo?"
09:07
What's so fascinating up there?"
181
535441
1698
09:09
He said, "You look up
and you tell me what you see."
and you tell me what you see."
182
537139
2678
Rekao je: "Pogledaj, pa ti meni reci."
09:13
"Clouds." (Laughter)
183
541087
3528
"Oblaci." (Smijeh)
09:16
He said, "All right.
What else do you see?"
What else do you see?"
184
544615
2907
Rekao je: "Dobro, što još vidiš?"
09:19
At that time, it was a plane passing by.
185
547522
2501
Baš tada je prolazio avion.
09:22
I said, "All right, I see an airplane."
186
550023
2027
Rekoh: "Aha, vidim avion."
09:24
He said, "Exactly, and what's
on that airplane?" "People."
on that airplane?" "People."
187
552050
4156
Rekao je: "Upravo tako.
A što je na tom avionu?" "Ljudi."
A što je na tom avionu?" "Ljudi."
09:28
"Exactly. Now where's that plane
and those people going?"
and those people going?"
188
556206
3877
"Upravo tako. A kamo ide
taj avion i ti ljudi?"
taj avion i ti ljudi?"
"Ne znam. Znaš li ti?
09:32
"I don't know. You know?
189
560083
1486
09:33
Please let me know if you do.
Then let me get some lottery numbers."
Then let me get some lottery numbers."
190
561569
3247
Reci mi ako znaš.
A onda ću i zaigrati loto."
A onda ću i zaigrati loto."
09:38
He said, "You're missing
the big picture, young blood.
the big picture, young blood.
191
566236
3158
Rekao je: "Mladiću,
ne vidiš što je tu bitno.
ne vidiš što je tu bitno.
09:41
That plane with those people
is going somewhere,
is going somewhere,
192
569394
2345
Taj avion s ljudima nekamo ide,
09:43
while we're here stuck.
193
571739
2578
a mi smo ovdje zatočeni.
09:46
The big picture is this:
194
574317
1834
Ovo je važno:
09:48
That plane with those people
going somewhere,
going somewhere,
195
576151
2368
Taj avion s ljudima ide negdje,
09:50
that's life passing us by
while we behind these walls, stuck."
while we behind these walls, stuck."
196
578519
4451
to je život koji nam bježi
dok smo mi zatočeni iza ovih zidina."
dok smo mi zatočeni iza ovih zidina."
09:58
Ever since that day,
197
586252
2066
Tada mi je nešto
10:00
that sparked something in my mind
and made me know I had to make a change.
and made me know I had to make a change.
198
588318
4179
sjelo u glavi i uvjerilo me da je
vrijeme za promjenu.
vrijeme za promjenu.
10:04
Growing up, I was always
a good, smart kid.
a good, smart kid.
199
592497
3297
Odrastajući, uvijek sam bio
dobro, pametno dijete.
dobro, pametno dijete.
10:07
Some people would say
I was a little too smart for my own good.
I was a little too smart for my own good.
200
595794
4949
Neki bi rekli da sam bio malo prepametan.
10:12
I had dreams of becoming
an architect or an archaeologist.
an architect or an archaeologist.
201
600743
5547
Htio sam biti arhitekt ili arheolog.
Trenutno radim u Društvu sreće.
10:18
Currently, I'm working
at the Fortune Society,
at the Fortune Society,
202
606290
2183
10:20
which is a reentry program,
203
608473
1749
To je program za resocijalizaciju,
10:22
and I work with people as a case manager
that are at high risk for recidivism.
that are at high risk for recidivism.
204
610222
4543
a radim s ljudima kao nadglednik za
slučajeve s visokim rizikom recidivizma.
slučajeve s visokim rizikom recidivizma.
10:26
So I connect them
with the services that they need

205
614765
2406
Povezujem te ljude sa službama
koje im trebaju

10:29
once they're released from jail and prison
206
617171
2029
kad izađu iz zatvora
10:31
so they can make a positive transition
back into society.
back into society.
207
619200
3126
kako bi doživjeli
pozitivan povratak u društvo.
pozitivan povratak u društvo.
10:34
If I was to see my 15-year-old self today,
208
622326
2795
Da danas vidim svoju 15-ogodišnju verziju,
10:37
I would sit down and talk to him
and try to educate him
and try to educate him
209
625121
2971
sjeo bih s njim i popričali bismo
i pokušao bih ga obrazovati
i pokušao bih ga obrazovati
10:40
and I would let him know,
"Listen, this is me. I'm you.
"Listen, this is me. I'm you.
210
628092
3945
i rekao bih mu:
"Slušaj me, ovo sam ja. Ja sam ti.
"Slušaj me, ovo sam ja. Ja sam ti.
10:44
This is us. We are one.
211
632037
2394
To smo mi. Mi smo jedno.
10:46
Everything that you're about to do,
I know what you're gonna do
I know what you're gonna do
212
634431
3042
Sve što planiraš učiniti, ja znam
10:49
before you do it because I already did it,
213
637473
2624
prije no što to uopće učiniš
jer sam ja to već učinio.
jer sam ja to već učinio.
10:52
and I would encourage him
not to hang out with x, y and z people.
not to hang out with x, y and z people.
214
640097
3637
Rekao bih mu da se ne druži
s tim i tim ljudima.

10:55
I would tell him not to be
in such-and-such place.
in such-and-such place.
215
643734
2806
Rekao bih mu da ne ide na ta i ta mjesta.
10:58
I would tell him,
keep your behind in school, man,
keep your behind in school, man,
216
646540
2376
Rekao bih mu da se drži škole
11:00
because that's where you need to be,
217
648916

11:05
This is the message
that we should be sharing
that we should be sharing

To je poruka koju bismo trebali širiti

with our young men and young women.

11:09
We shouldn't be treating them as adults

Ne bismo ih trebali tretirati kao odrasle

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ismael Nazario - Prison reform advocatePrison reform advocate Ismael Nazario helps former inmates from New York's Rikers Island jail reenter society.
Why you should listen
At the Fortune Society, Ismael Nazario helps former inmates from New York's Rikers Island jail reintegrate into society after their release. The issue is close to home for Nazario: When he was just shy of eighteen he was arrested for robbery and sent to Rikers Island, where he spent 300 days in solitary confinement before he was ever convicted of a crime. Now as part of the I-CAN (Individualized Correction Achievement Network) program, he helps those at high risk for recidivism get jobs and stay out of jail and prison.
