I am not sure what time it is there.
non so che ora è lì da voi!
to be participating in your conference.
di partecipare al vostro incontro.
– "The Future You" –
– “The future you” –
it invites us to open a dialogue today,
invita già da oggi al dialogo:
invita a rivolgersi a un “tu”.
it is made of encounters,
è fatto cioè di incontri,
through our relations with others.
attraverso le relazioni.
sempre più la convinzione
is deeply tied to that of others:
è legata a quella degli altri:
ma tempo di incontro.
life is about interactions.
to those who are sick,
ammalati che soffrono,
who face terrible hardships
tremende difficoltà
a hell of pain inside their hearts,
l’inferno nel proprio cuore,
who cannot find a job,
che non hanno lavoro,
in una famiglia di migranti:
in a family of migrants;
like many other Italians,
come tanti altri italiani,
who are left with nothing.
di chi resta senza nulla.
among today's "discarded" people.
tra gli “scartati” di oggi.
rimane sempre quella domanda:
deep in my heart:
if this meeting could help to remind us
che questo incontro ci aiuti a ricordare
gli uni degli altri,
separated from the other,
e indipendente dagli altri,
by standing together, including everyone.
solo insieme,
but everything is connected,
ma in realtà tutto è collegato
our connections to a healthy state.
i nostri collegamenti:
che porto nel cuore
the offense that was never forgiven,
quel male non perdonato,
that I carry within me,
that needs to be extinguished
leaving only ashes behind.
e non lasci cenere.
is something impossible to achieve.
che sia possibile un futuro felice.
must be taken very seriously,
our door to the outside world.
se non ci chiudiamo in noi stessi.
and each single component.
di ogni particolare col tutto.
better than I do –
– lo sapete meglio di me –
una comprensione della realtà
and interacts with everything else.
in interazione continua con le altre.
and technological innovation
scientifiche e tecnologiche
and social inclusion.
equità e inclusione sociale!
while we discover faraway planets,
mentre scopriamo nuovi pianeti lontani,
and sisters orbiting around us.
e della sorella che mi orbitano attorno!
inconvenient word,
e a volte scomoda,
ad assistenza sociale,
and scientific choices,
economico, scientifico,
among individuals, peoples and countries.
tra i popoli e i Paesi.
to a true solidarity
a una solidarietà concreta,
by our techno-economic systems
da sistemi tecno-economici
at their core, instead of people.
ma i prodotti dell’uomo.
to erase from the dictionary.
dal dizionario.
is not an automatic mechanism.
non è un meccanismo automatico,
from the heart of each and everyone.
che nasce dal cuore di ciascuno.
of so many contradictions, is a gift,
and the meaning of life,
e il senso della vita,
to do good to another fellow being?
di fare del bene agli altri?
and we need creativity.
e anche creatività.
gathers many creative minds.
a creative, concrete
creativa, concreta, ingegnosa.
e le formule di rito,
a tranquillizzare le coscienze.
our conscience, are not enough.
all together, to remember
a statistic or a number.
statistiche o numeri:
to help us understand the difference
and those who take care of the other.
It is the Parable of the Good Samaritan.
è la parabola del Buon Samaritano.
"Who is my neighbor?" -
"Chi è il mio prossimo?"
percosso e abbandonato lungo la strada.
beaten and abandoned along a dirt road.
two very influential people of the time,
un sacerdote e un levita,
despised ethnicity at the time, walked by.
che apparteneva a una etnia disprezzata.
lying on the ground,
alla vista di quell’uomo ferito a terra,
as if he weren't even there.
come se nulla fosse,
in a very concrete manner.
on the wounds of the helpless man,
sulle ferite di quell’uomo,
for him to be assisted.
per la sua assistenza.
is the story of today’s humanity.
è la storia dell’umanità di oggi.
c'è il denaro, ci sono le cose.
and things, instead of people.
di chi si ritiene “per bene”,
who call themselves "respectable,"
of human beings, or entire populations,
a terra per la strada.
who are creating a new world
chi dà vita a un mondo nuovo,
even out of their own pockets.
anche a proprie spese.
unless it is at their own expense."
and we must do it together.
e dobbiamo farlo insieme.
with all the evil we breathe every day?
to open up to the good,
l’apertura al bene, la compassione,
to react against evil,
from deep within our hearts.
nor Mother Teresa of Calcutta."
e nemmeno Madre Teresa di Calcutta”.
each and every one of us.
agli occhi di Dio.
is irreplaceable in the eyes of God.
che stiamo attraversando,
can become a bright candle,
una candela accesa
will overcome darkness,
prevale sulle tenebre,
the future does have a name,
to be optimistically naïve
essere ottimisti ingenui
del male dell’umanità.
that doesn't dwell on the past,
non si ferma al passato,
but is able to see a tomorrow.
that opens onto the future.
sull’avvenire.
umile e nascosto,
will develop into a large tree.
in un grande albero;
that allows the whole dough to grow,
che fa crescere tutta la pasta,
that feeds on hope
che si alimenta di speranza,
the shield of darkness.
is enough for hope to exist,
perché ci sia speranza,
and another "you,"
when we have an "us?"
there begins a revolution.
comincia una rivoluzione!
che vorrei condividere oggi
I would like to share today
the revolution of tenderness.
la rivoluzione della tenerezza.
and becomes real.
that starts from our heart
the ears and the hands.
alle orecchie, alle mani.
our eyes to see the other,
per vedere l’altro,
dei poveri, di chi teme il futuro;
those who are afraid of the future.
della nostra casa comune,
of our common home,
our hands and our heart
usare le mani e il cuore
per prendersi cura di lui.
of the young children,
dei più piccoli,
e conosce il papà e la mamma
their voice, their tenderness.
per la voce, per la tenerezza.
adapting to the little child,
parlano al loro piccolo bambino,
being on the same level as the other.
abbassarsi al livello dell’altro.
to be on our level.
the Good Samaritan took.
dal Buon Samaritano.
tutta la vita dell’uomo
concrete language of love.
most courageous men and women.
più coraggiosi e forti.
it is fortitude.
the path of humility.
la strada dell’umiltà.
will have an impact on people,
hanno un impatto sulla gente,
to act humbly.
and you will ruin the other.
è come il gin preso a digiuno.
on an empty stomach."
you lose your balance,
ti fa perdere l’equilibrio
a te stesso e agli altri,
and those around you,
with humility and tenderness.
all’umiltà e alla tenerezza.
on the other hand,
becomes a service, a force for good.
in the hands of politicians,
non è solo nelle mani dei politici,
an enormous responsibility.
in the hands of those people
nelle mani delle persone
as well with tenderness,
ricordatevi anche di me con tenerezza,
che mi è stato affidato
I have been given
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
His Holiness Pope Francis - Bishop of RomePope Francis is the Bishop of Rome and the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
Why you should listen
Pope Francis was elected in March 2013, becoming the first Pope from the Americas and from the Southern hemisphere. He was born in 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, as Jorge Mario Bergoglio, in a family of Italian immigrants. A Jesuit, he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires and then a Cardinal leading the Argentinian church. Upon election as the 266th Pope, he chose Francis as his papal name in reference to Saint Francis of Assisi.
A very popular figure who has taken it upon himself to reform the Catholic Church, Pope Francis's worldview is solidly anchored in humility, simplicity, mercy, social justice, attention to the poor and the dispossessed -- those he says "our culture disposes of like waste" -- and in a critical attitude towards unbridled capitalism and consumerism. He is a strong advocate of global action against climate change, to which he has devoted his powerful 2015 encyclical, Laudato sì ("Praise be to you"). He invites us to practice "tenderness," putting ourselves "at the level of the other," to listen and care. He is committed to interfaith dialogue and is seen as a moral and spiritual authority across the world by many people who aren't Catholics.
