ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Memory Banda - Activist
Memory Banda is a tireless leader for girls’ rights, in Malawi and around the world.

Why you should listen

Memory Banda is a tireless leader for girls' rights around the world. She is leading Malawi's fight to end child marriage through her work with Let Girls Lead and the Girl Empowerment Network of Malawi.

Only 18-years-old, Memory championed a succesful national campaign that culminated in landmark legislation that outlawed child marriage. Memory works with girl leaders to ensure that village chiefs ban child marriage, end sexual initiation practices, enable girls to finish school and live safe from violence in a country where more than half of girls are married as children.

Memory became an advocate for girls  after her younger sister was forced into marriage at the age of 11. She is now a college student in Malawi.

Memory Banda: A warrior’s cry against child marriage

Memory Banda: Bojni poklik protiv dječjeg braka

07:32
A hardteško thing to changepromijeniti,
134
440554
1927
Bilo je teško to promijeniti,
07:34
but a good thing to try.
135
442481
2624
ali je dobra stvar barem pokušati.
07:37
So we triedpokušala.
136

Pa smo probale.
07:39
It was very hardteško, but we pushedgurnula.
137
447357
2508
Bilo je vrlo teško, ali smo bile uporne.
07:42
And I'm here to say that in my communityzajednica,
138
450245
2864
Sada sam ovdje da vam
kažem za svoju zajednicu,
07:45
it was the first communityzajednica after girlsdjevojke
139
453109
2560
koja je bila prva zajednica u kojoj se,
07:47
pushedgurnula so hardteško to our traditionaltradicionalan leadervođa,
140

nakon što su djevojke uporno gurale,
07:51
and our leadervođa stoodstajao up for us
and said no girldjevojka has to be marriedoženjen
141
459036

naš vođa zauzeo za nas i rekao
da se nijedna djevojka ne mora udati
07:55
before the agedob of 18.
142

prije nego što navrši 18 godina.

08:05
In my communityzajednica,

U mojoj zajednici,
08:07
that was the first time a communityzajednica,
145
475243
2647
to je bilo prvi puta
08:09
they had to call the bylawspodzakonski akti,
146
477890

da su morali donijeti uredbu,
08:12
the first bylawpravilnika that protectedzaštićeni girlsdjevojke
147
480351

prvu uredbu koja štiti djevojke
08:15
in our communityzajednica.
148
483858
2194
u našoj zajednici.
08:18
We did not stop there.
149
486052
1788
Nismo stale na tome.
08:19
We forgedkrivotvoren aheadnaprijed.
150
487840
2949
Gurale smo dalje.
08:22
We were determinedodlučan to fightborba for girlsdjevojke
not just in my communityzajednica,
151
490789
3854
Bile smo odlučne u borbi za djevojke
ne samo u mojoj zajednici,
08:26
but even in other communitieszajednice.
152
494643
2786
već i u drugim zajednicama.
08:29
When the childdijete marriagebrak billračun
was beingbiće presentedpredstavili in FebruaryVeljača,
153
497429
4133
Kada se u veljači predstavljao
prijedlog zakon o dječjem braku,
08:33
we were there at the ParliamentParlament housekuća.
154

bile smo ispred Parlamenta.
08:37
EverySvaki day, when the membersčlanovi

155
505208
4086
Svaki dan, kada su članovi
Parlamenta ulazili u zgradu,
08:41
we were tellingreći them,
"Would you please supportpodrška the billračun?"
156
509294
3089
molile smo ih da podrže
taj prijedlog zakon.
08:44
And we don't have
much technologytehnologija like here,
157
512383
4759
Nemamo toliko tehnologije kao vi ovdje,
08:49
but we have our smallmali phonestelefoni.
158
517142
1997
ali imamo malene telefone.
08:51
So we said, "Why can't we get
theirnjihov numbersbrojevi and texttekst them?"
159
519139
5030
Pa nam je sinulo da bismo mogle saznati
njihove brojeve i poslati im poruke.
08:56
So we did that. It was a good thing.
160
524178
3250
To smo i napravile. To je bilo dobro.
08:59
(ApplausePljesak)
161
527428

(Pljesak)
09:01
So when the billračun passedprošao,
we textedposlao poruku them back,
162
529448
2973
Kada je prijedlog zakon prošao,
ponovo smo im poslale poruke,
09:04
"Thank you for supportingPodrška the billračun."
163
532421

zahvaljujući im što su ga podržali.
09:06
(LaughterSmijeh)
164
534849

(Smijeh)
09:07
And when the billračun was signedpotpisan

165
535919
3345
Kada ga je potpisao predsjednik,
09:11
makingizrađivanje it into lawzakon, it was a plusplus.
166
539264
3366
i učinio ga zakonom,
to je bila velika stvar.
09:14
Now, in MalawiMalavi, 18 is the legalpravni
marriagebrak agedob, from 15 to 18.
167
542630
5852
Sada je u Malaviju 18 legalna dob za brak,
od 15 do 18 godina.
09:20
(ApplausePljesak)
168
548482
3645
(Pljesak)
09:26
It's a good thing to know
that the billračun passedprošao,
169
554495
3576
Dobro je znati da je zakon prošao,
09:30
but let me tell you this:
170
558071
3042
no reći ću vam ovo:
09:33
There are countrieszemlje where 18
is the legalpravni marriagebrak agedob,
171
561113
4388
postoje zemlje u kojima je
18 legalna dob za brak,
09:37
but don't we hearčuti criesplač
of womenžene and girlsdjevojke everysvaki day?
172
565501
4272
no ne čujemo li vapaj
žena i djevojaka svaki dan?
09:41
EverySvaki day, girls'djevojački livesživot
are beingbiće wasteduzalud away.
173
569773

Svaki dan trate se životi djevojaka.
09:47
This is highvisok time for leadersčelnici

174
575416
6454
Krajnje je vrijeme da vođe
poštuju svoju obavezu.
09:53
In honoringčast this commitmentopredjeljenje,
175

2369
Poštivanje te obaveze
09:56
it meanssredstva keepingčuvanje girls'djevojački issuespitanja

176
584239
5712
znači uvijek imati na umu
probleme djevojaka.
10:01
We don't have to be subjectedpodvrgnuti as seconddrugi,
177
589951
3761
Ne treba nas se pokoravati
kao drugorazredne osobe,
10:05
but they have to know that womenžene,
as we are in this roomsoba,
178
593712
4238
nego trebaju znati da žene,
poput nas u ovoj dvorani,
10:09
we are not just womenžene,
we are not just girlsdjevojke,
179
597950
3050
nismo samo žene, samo djevojke,
10:13
we are extraordinaryizvanredan.
180
601000
1980
mi smo posebne.
10:14
We can do more.
181
602980
1913
Možemo više.
10:16
And anotherjoš thing for MalawiMalavi,
182
604893
2995
A druga stvar koja se tiče Malavija,
10:19
and not just MalawiMalavi but other countrieszemlje:
183
607888
2902
i ne samo Malavija već i drugih zemalja:
10:22
The lawszakoni whichkoji are there,
184
610790
3785
zakoni postoje,
10:26
you know how a lawzakon is not a lawzakon
untildo it is enforcedprovodi?
185
614575
5851
ali znate da zakon nije
zakon dok se ne provodi.
10:32
The lawzakon whichkoji has just recentlynedavno passedprošao
186
620426
3413
Zakon koji je tek nedavno prošao
10:35
and the lawszakoni that in other countrieszemlje
have been there,
187
623839
2624
postojeći zakoni u drugim zemljama,
10:38
they need to be publicizedobjavljen
at the locallokalne levelnivo,
188
626463
3924
moraju biti objavljeni na lokalnoj razini,
10:42
at the communityzajednica levelnivo,
189
630387
2183
na razini zajednice,
10:44

191
637956

Djevojke se u svojim zajednicama
suočavaju s teškim problemima svaki dan.
10:55
So if these youngmladi girlsdjevojke know
that there are lawszakoni that protectzaštititi them,
192
643274
5085
Ako te mlade djevojke znaju
da postoje zakoni koji ih štite,

they will be ableu stanju to standstajati up

because they will know that
there is a lawzakon that protectsštiti them.
194
651145

jer će znati da ih zakon štiti.
