ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Alberto Cairo - Physiotherapist
Alberto Cairo leads the International Red Cross' orthopedic rehabilitation work in Afghanistan.

Why you should listen

Alberto Cairo is the head of the ICRC's orthopedic program in Afghanistan. He's spent the past two decades in this war-ravaged nation -- far from his native Italy -- helping an estimated 100,000 Afghan landmine and accident victims learn to find the strength within themselves to not only walk, but also to hope, again.

In a country where the disabled are generally given pity but no rights, Alberto found a way -- through micro-loans, positive discrimination schemes and home schooling -- to give tens of thousands of disabled Afghans a job and a sense of dignity and pride.

About him, John F. Burns wrote in the New York Times: "Afghans of all ethnic and political stripes, even the Taliban, seem likely to count Alberto Cairo as one foreigner who left the country better than he found it."

His diary, "Storie da Kabul," based on a series of stories he wrote for Italy's La Repubblica, has been published in Italian and in French.

03:03
you don't want to see things,

2000
ne želite vidjeti stvari,
03:05
so you just want to go to your roomsoba, to lockzaključati yourselfsami insideiznutra

I svi su nestali s ulice.
03:22
The carsautomobili disappearednestao as well.
67
187000
3000
Auti su isto nestali.
03:25
I duckedušao.
68
190000
2000
Sagnuo sam se.
03:27
And only one figurelik

70
194000
2000
ostala na sredini ceste.
03:31
It was a man in a wheelchairinvalidska kolica
71
196000
3000
Bio je to čovjek u kolicima
03:34
desperatelyočajnički tryingtežak to movepotez away.
72

koji se očajnički pokušavao maknuti.
03:37
Well I'm not a particularlynaročito bravehrabar personosoba,
73

2000
Sad, ja nisam posebno hrabra osoba,
03:39
I have to confesspriznati it,
74
204000
2000
moram to priznati,
03:41
but I could not just ignorezanemariti him.
75
206000
4000
ali nisam ga mogao samo ignorirati.
03:45
So I stoppedprestao the carautomobil
76
210000
3000
Tako sam zaustavio auto
03:48
and I wentotišao to help.
77
213000
3000
i pošao pomoći.
03:51
The man was withoutbez legsnoge
78
216000
3000
Čovjek je bio bez nogu
03:54
and only with one armruka.
79
219000
3000
i sa samo jednom rukom.
03:57
BehindIza him there was a childdijete, his sonsin,
80
222000
3000
Iza njega je bilo dijete, njegov sin,
04:00
redcrvena in the facelice
81

in an effortnapor to pushgurnuti the fatherotac.
82
227000
4000
od napora da gurne oca.
04:06
So I tookuzeo him into a safesef placemjesto.
83
231000
3000
Tako sam ga odveo na sigurnije mjesto.
04:09
And I askpitati, "What are you doing out in the streetulica
84
234000
4000
I pitam: "Što činite vani na ulici
04:13
in this situationsituacija?"
85
238000
2000
u ovakvoj situaciji?"
04:15
"I work," he said.
86
240000
2000
"Radim," odgovorio je.
04:17
I wonderedpitala, what work?
87
242000
3000
Pitao sam se, kakav posao?
04:20
And then I askpitati an even more stupidglup questionpitanje:
88
245000
3000
I onda sam pitao još gluplje pitanje:
04:23
"Why don't you have the prosthesesproteza?
89
248000
2000
"Zašto nemate proteze?
04:25
Why don't you have the artificialUmjetna legsnoge?"
90
250000
2000
Zašto nemate umjetne noge?"
04:27
And he said, "The RedCrveni CrossKriž has closedzatvoreno."
91
252000
4000
I odgovorio je: "Crveni križ se zatvorio."
04:31
Well withoutbez thinkingmišljenje, I told him
92
256000
3000
Pa, bez razmišljanja sam mu rekao:
04:34
"Come tomorrowsutra.
93
259000
2000
"Dođite sutra.
04:36
We will providepružiti you with a pairpar of legsnoge."
94
261000
4000
Naći ćemo vam par nogu."
04:40
The man, his nameime was MahmoudMahmud,
95
265000
3000
Čovjek, ime mu je bilo Mahmoud,
04:43
and the childdijete, whosečije nameime was RafiRafi, left.
96
268000
4000
i dijete, čije je ime bilo Rafi, su otišli.
04:47
And then I said, "Oh, my God. What did I say?
97
272000
4000
I onda sam rekao: "O, Bože. Što sam to upravo rekao?"
04:51
The centercentar is closedzatvoreno,
98
276000
2000
Centar je zatvoren,
04:53
no staffosoblje around.
99
278000
2000
nema osoblja.
04:55
Maybe the machinerystrojevi is brokenslomljen.
100
280000
3000
Možda su aparati slomljeni.
04:58
Who is going to make the legsnoge for him?"
101
283000
3000
Tko će mu napraviti noge?"
05:01
So I hopednadao that he would not come.
102
286000
4000
Tako sam se nadao da neće doći.
05:05
This is the streetsulice of KabulKabul
103
290000
3000
Ovo su ulice Kabula
05:08
in those daysdana.
104
293000
3000
u onim danima.
05:11
So I said, "Well I will give him some moneynovac."
105
296000
3000
Pa sam rekao: "Dat ću mu nešto novca."
05:14
And so the followingsljedeći day,
106
299000
2000
I sljedeći dan,
05:16
I wentotišao to the orthopedicortopedski centercentar.
107
301000
3000
otišao sam u ortopedski centar.
05:19
And I spokegovorio with a gatekeeperVratar.
108
304000
4000
Razgovarao sam s portirom.
05:23
I was readyspreman to tell him,
109
308000
2000
Bio sam mu spreman reći,
05:25
"Listen, if someonenetko such-and-suchtakav-i-takav comesdolazi tomorrowsutra,
110
310000
3000
"Slušajte, ako netko takav i takav sutra dođe,
05:28
please tell him that it was a mistakepogreška.
111
313000
3000
molim vas da mu rečete da je bila pogreška.
05:31
Nothing can be doneučinio.
112
316000
2000
Ništa se ne može učiniti.
05:33
Give him some moneynovac."
113
318000
2000
Dajte mu nešto novca."
05:35
But MahmoudMahmud and his sonsin were alreadyveć there.
114
320000
2000
Ali Mahmoud i njegov sin su već bili tamo.
05:37
And they were not alonesam.
115
322000
2000
I nisu bili sami.
05:39
There were 15, maybe 20, people like him waitingčekanje.
116
324000
5000
Bilo je 15, možda i 20, ljudi poput njega koji su čekali.
05:44
And there was some staffosoblje too.
117
329000
4000
I bilo je i dijela osoblja.
05:48
AmongMeđu them there was my right-handdesna ruka man,
118
333000
3000
Među njima je bio i čovjek, moja desna ruka,
05:51
NajmuddinNajmuddin.
119
336000
2000
Najmuddin.
05:53
And the gatekeeperVratar told me,
120
338000
3000
I portir mi je rekao,
05:56
"They come everydaysvaki dan to see if the centercentar will openotvoren."
121
341000
4000
"Dolaze svaki dan da vide je li centar otvoren."
06:00
I said, "No.
122
345000
2000
Rekao sam: "Ne.
06:02
We have to go away. We cannotNe možete stayboravak here."
123
347000
2000
Moramo ići. Ne možemo tu ostati."
06:04
They were bombingbombardovnje -- not very closeblizu -- but you could hearčuti the noisebuka of the bombsbombe.
124
349000
3000
Bombardirali su -- ne jako blizu -- ali mogli ste čuti buku bombi.
06:07
So, "We cannotNe možete stayboravak here, it's dangerousopasno.
125
352000
3000
Pa, "Ne možemo ostati ovdje, opasno je.
06:10
It's not a priorityprioritet."
126
355000
2000
Ovo nije prioritet."
06:12
But NajmuddinNajmuddin told me, "Listen now, we're here."
127
357000
4000
Ali Najmuddin mi je rekao: "A slušajte, tu smo."
06:16
At leastnajmanje we can startpočetak repairingpopravak the prosthesesproteza, the brokenslomljen prosthesesproteza of the people
128
361000
3000
Možemo barem početi popravljati proteze, slomljene proteze ljudi
06:19
and maybe try to do something
129
364000
2000
i možda pokušati napraviti nešto
06:21
for people like MahmoudMahmud."
130
366000
2000
za ljude poput Mahmouda."
06:23
I said, "No, please. We cannotNe možete do that.
131
368000
3000
Rekao sam: "Molim te, ne. Ne možemo to napraviti.
06:26
It's really dangerousopasno.
132
371000
3000
Stvarno je opasno.
06:29
We have other things to do."
133
374000
2000
Moramo činiti druge stvari."
06:31
But they insistedinzistirao.
134
376000
2000
Ali inzistirali su.
06:33
When you have 20 people
135
378000
2000
Kad imate 20 ljudi
06:35
in frontispred of you, looking at you
136
380000
2000
pred vama, koji vas gledaju
06:37
and you are the one who has to decideodlučiti ...
137
382000
3000
i vi ste onaj koji mora odlučiti ...
06:40
So we startedpočeo doing some repairspopravci.
138
385000
3000
