ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Yves Rossy - Jetman
With a jet-powered wing attached to his body, Yves Rossy expands the possibilities of human flight.

Why you should listen

On May 7 of this year, Swiss pilot Yves Rossy stepped out of a helicopter 8,000 feet above the Grand Canyon and ... took off. Wearing a rigid wing powered by four model jet turbine engines, Rossy flew for eight minutes over the mile-deep trench, soaring over the red rocks before parachuting down to the Colorado River far below. It's the latest exploit in a life powered by one dream: to fly like a bird.

Wearing his single wing, Rossy really flies, steering with the movements of his body. In the last couple of years he has crossed the English Channel, flown over the Swiss Alps and performed aerobatic loops around a hot-air balloon; for his next quest, he is developing a new kind of parachute that will enable him to fly as low as 200 meters.

BGBG: How did you start开始 to become成为 JetmanJetman?

YRYR: It was about 20 years年份 ago

06:02
when I discovered发现 free自由 falling落下.
64
347000

06:04
When you go out of an airplane飞机
65
349000

you are almost几乎 naked.
66
351000

06:08
You take a position位置 like that.
67
353000
3000
06:11
And especially特别 when you take a tracking追踪 position位置,
68
356000
3000
06:14
you have the feeling感觉
69
359000
2000
06:16
that you are flying飞行.
70
361000
2000
06:18
And that's the nearest最近的 thing to the dream梦想.
71
363000
4000
06:22
You have no machine around you.
72
367000
3000
06:25
You are just in the element元件.
73
370000
2000
06:27
It's very short and only in one direction方向.
74
372000
3000
06:30
So the idea理念
75
375000
2000
06:32
was, okay, keep that feeling感觉 of freedom自由,
76
377000
5000
06:37
but change更改 the vector向量 and increase增加 the time.
77
382000
3000
06:40
BGBG: So I'm kind of curious好奇, what's your top最佳 speed速度?
78
385000
3000
06:43
YRYR: It's about 300 km千米 per hour小时 before looping循环.
79
388000
4000
06:47
That means手段 about 190 miles英里 per hour小时.
80
392000
3000
06:50
BGBG: And what's the weight重量 of the equipment设备 you're carrying携带?
81
395000
2000
06:52
YRYR: When I exit出口 full充分 of kerosene煤油,
82
397000
3000
06:55
I'm about 55 kilos
83
400000
3000
06:58
I have 55 kilos公斤 on my back.
84
403000
2000
07:00
BGBG: And you're not piloting试点?
85
405000
2000
07:02
There is no handle处理, no steering操舵 nothing?
86
407000
2000
07:04
It is purely纯粹 your body身体,
87
409000
2000
07:06
and the wings翅膀 become成为 part部分 of the body身体 and vice versa反之亦然?
88
411000
2000
07:08
YRYR: That's really the goal目标,
89
413000
2000
07:10
because if you put [in] steering操舵,
90
415000
3000
07:13
then you reinvent重塑 the airplane飞机.
91
418000
2000
07:15
And I wanted to keep this freedom自由 of movement运动.
92
420000
5000
07:20
And it's really like the kid孩子 playing播放 the airplane飞机.
93
425000
2000
07:22
I want to go down like that.
94
427000
2000
07:24
And up I climb, I turn.
95
429000
3000
07:27
It's really pure flying
96
432000
3000
07:30
It's not steering操舵, it's flight飞行.
97
435000
3000
07:33
BGBG: What kind of training训练 do you do,
98
438000
3000
07:36
you personally亲自, for that?
99
441000
2000
07:38
YRYR: Actually其实, I try to stay just fit适合.
100
443000
4000
07:42
I don't do special特别 physical物理 training训练.
101
447000
4000
07:46
Just, I try to keep my mobility流动性
102
451000
4000
07:50
through通过 new activities活动.
103
455000
3000
07:53
For example,
104
458000
3000
比如
07:56
last winter冬季 I began开始 with kite风筝 surfing冲浪 --
105
461000
3000
07:59
so new things.
106
464000
2000
08:01
So you have to adapt适应.
107
466000
2000
08:03
Because this is -- I'm quite相当 an experienced有经验的 manager经理 of systems系统
108
468000
3000
08:06
as a pilot飞行员,
109
471000
2000
08:08
but this is really --
110
473000
2000
08:10
you need fluidity流动性,
111
475000
2000
08:12
you need to be agile敏捷
112
477000
2000
08:14
and also to adapt适应 really fast快速.
113
479000
3000
08:17
BGBG: Somebody in the audience听众 asked me,
114
482000
2000
08:19
"How does he breathe呼吸 up there?"
115
484000
2000
08:21
because you're going fast快速 and you're up 3,000 meters or so.
116
486000
3000
08:24
YRYR: Okay, up to 3,000 meters,
117
489000
2000
08:26
it's not such这样 a big problem问题 with oxygen.
118
491000
3000
08:29
But for example, bikers
08:32
they have the same相同 speed速度.
120
497000
2000
08:34
Just with the helmet头盔, integral积分 helmet头盔,
121

2000

08:36
it's really no problem问题 to breathe呼吸.
122

09:53
So that was one of those cases where you let the wings翅膀 go, right?
153
578000
3000
09:56
YRYR: Yeah. I did try in [the] clouds,
154
581000
3000
09:59
but you lose失去 [orientation方向 completely全然].
155
584000
3000
10:02
So I did try to take, again,
156
587000
2000
10:04
a climb altitude高度.
157
589000
3000
10:07
I thought, okay, I will go out.
158
592000
2000
10:09
But most probably大概 I did something like that.
159
594000
4000
10:13
BGBG: Something that is not very safe安全 in image图片.
160
598000
3000
10:16
YRYR: But you feel great,
161
601000
2000
10:18
but you have not the right altitude高度.
162
603000
5000
10:23
So the next下一个 thing I saw was just blue蓝色.
163
608000
3000
10:26
It was the sea.
164
611000
2000
是大海
10:28
I have also an audible听得见 altimeter高度表.
165
613000
2000
10:30
So I was at my minimum最低限度 altitude高度
166
615000
3000
10:33
in that vector向量 -- fast快速 --
167
618000
3000
10:36
so I pulled that.
168
621000
2000
10:38
And then I did open打开 my chute斜道.
169
623000
2000
10:40
BGBG: So the wings翅膀 have their own拥有 parachute降落伞, and you have your two parachutes降落伞.
170
625000
3000
10:43
YRYR: Exactly究竟. There is a rescue拯救 parachute降落伞 for the wing翅膀
171
628000
3000
10:46
for two reasons原因:
172
631000
2000
10:48
so I can repair修理 it afterward之后
173
633000
2000
10:50
and especially特别 so nobody没有人 takes that, just on his head.
174
635000
4000
10:54
BGBG: I see. Maybe come back here.
175
639000
3000
10:57
This is risky有风险 stuff东东 indeed确实.
176
642000
2000
10:59
People have died死亡 trying to do this kind of thing.
177
644000
3000
11:02
And you don't look like a crazy guy; you're a Swiss瑞士人 airline航空公司 pilot飞行员,
178
647000
3000
11:05
so you're rather a checklist清单 kind of guy.
179
650000
3000
11:08
I assume承担 you have standards标准.
180
653000
2000
11:10
YRYR: Yeah. I have no checklist清单 for that.
181
655000
3000
11:13
BGBG: Let's not tell you employer
182
658000
3000
11:16
YRYR: No, that's really two worlds世界.
183
661000
3000
11:20
Civil国内 aviation航空 is something that we know very well.
184
665000
3000
11:23
We have a hundred years年份 of experience经验.
185
668000
3000
11:26
And you can adapt适应 really precisely恰恰.
186
671000
4000
11:30
With that,
187
675000
2000
规定
11:32
I have to adapt适应 to something new.
188
677000
2000
11:34
That means手段 improvise凑合.
189
679000
2000
11:36
So it's really a play between之间 these two approaches方法.
190
681000
3000
11:39
Something that I know very well --
191
684000
2000
11:41
these principles原则, for example,
192
686000
2000
11:43
we have two engines引擎 on an Airbus空中客车公司;
193
688000
2000
11:45
with only one engine发动机, you can fly it.
194
690000
2000
11:47
So plan计划 B, always a plan计划 B.
195
692000
3000
11:50
In a fighter战斗机, you have an ejection喷出 seat座位.
196
695000
2000
11:52
That's my ejection喷出 seat座位.
197
697000
2000
11:54
So I have the approach途径 of a professional专业的 pilot飞行员
198
699000
3000
11:57
with the respect尊重 of a pioneer先锋
199
702000
5000
12:02
in front面前 of Mother母亲 Nature性质.
200
707000
3000
12:05
BGBG: It's well said. It's well said.
201
710000
3000
12:08
What happens发生 if one of the engines引擎 stops停止?
202
713000
3000
12:11
YRYR: I do a roll.
203
716000
4000
12:15
And then I stabilize
204
720000
2000
12:17
and according根据 to my altitude高度,
205
722000
2000
12:19
I continue继续 on two or three engines引擎.
206
724000
2000
12:21
It's sometimes有时 possible可能 --
207
726000
2000
12:23
it's quite相当 complicated复杂 to explain说明 --
208
728000
3000
12:26
but according根据 to which哪一个 regime政权 I was,
209
731000
4000
12:30
I can continue继续 on two
210
735000
2000
12:32
and try to get a nice不错 place地点 to land土地, and then I open打开 my parachute降落伞.
211
737000
3000
12:35
BGBG: So the beginning开始 of the flight飞行
212
740000
2000
12:37
is actually其实 you jump off a plane平面 or a helicopter直升机,
213
742000
2000
12:39
and you go on a dive潜水 and accelerate加速 the engines引擎,
214
744000
3000
12:42
and then you basically基本上 take off mid-air半空 somewhere某处.
215
747000
3000
12:45
And then the landing降落, as we have seen看到,
216
750000
2000
12:47
arriving到达 on this side of the channel渠道,
217
752000
2000
12:49
is through通过 a parachute降落伞.
218
754000
2000
12:51
So just as a curiosity
219
756000
2000
12:53
where did you land土地 when you flew over the Grand盛大 Canyon峡谷?
220
758000
3000
12:56
Did you land土地 on the rim轮缘, down at the bottom底部?
221
761000
3000
12:59
YRYR: It was down on the bottom底部.
222
764000
2000
13:01
And I came来了 back afterward之后
223
766000
2000
13:03
on the sled雪橇 of the helicopter直升机 back.
224
768000
2000
回来
13:05
But it was too stoney斯托尼 and full充分 of cactus仙人掌 on top最佳.
225
770000
5000
13:10
BGBG: That's exactly究竟 why I asked the question.
226
775000
2000
13:12
YRYR: And also the currents电流 are quite相当 funny滑稽 there.
227
777000
5000
13:17
There is big thermal activity活动,
228
782000
2000
13:19
big difference区别 in altitude高度 also.
229
784000
2000
13:21
So it was much safer更安全 for me to land土地 at the bottom底部.
230
786000
4000
13:25
BGBG: So I think that right now, many许多 people in the audience听众
231
790000
3000
13:28
are asking, "Okay, when are you developing发展 a double-seater双座位
232
793000
2000
13:30
so they can fly with you?"
233
795000
2000
13:32
YRYR: I have a standard标准 answer回答.
234
797000
2000
13:34
Have you ever seen看到 tandem串联 birds鸟类?
235
799000
4000
13:40
(Applause
237
805000
10000
13:50
Yves伊夫, one last question.
238
815000
2000
Yves,
13:52
What's next下一个 for you? What's next下一个 for JetmanJetman?
239
817000
3000
13:55
YRYR: First, to instruct指导 a younger更年轻 guy.
240
820000
4000
13:59
I want to share分享 it,
241
824000
2000
14:01
to do formation编队 flights航班.
242
826000
2000
14:03
And I plan计划 to start开始 from a cliff悬崖,
243
828000
2000
14:05
like catapulted连升 from a cliff悬崖.
244
830000
2000
14:07
BGBG: So instead代替 of jumping跳跃 off a plane平面, yes?
245
832000
2000
14:09
YRYR: Yes, with the final最后 goal目标 to take off,
246
834000
2000
14:11
but with initial初始 speed速度.
247
836000
2000
14:13
Really, I go step by step.
248
838000
2000
14:15
It seems似乎 a little bit crazy,
249
840000
2000
14:17
but it's not.
250
842000
2000
14:19
It's possible可能 to start开始 already已经 now, it's just too dangerous危险.
251
844000
3000
14:22
(Laughter
