Today his Planetwalk foundation consults on sustainable development and works with educational groups to teach kids about the environment.

02:25
My journey旅程 began开始 in 1971
25
133000
4000
02:29
when I witnessed目击 two oil tankers油轮 collide碰撞 beneath下面 the Golden金色 Gate,
26
137000
6000
02:35
and a half a million百万 gallons加仑 of oil spilled into the bay.
27
143000
4000
02:39
It disturbed不安 me so much
28
147000
4000
02:43
that I decided决定 that I was going to give up riding骑术 and driving主动 in motorized机动的 vehicles汽车.
29
151000
6000
02:50
That’s a big thing in California加州.
30
158000
3000
02:53
And it was a big thing in my little community社区 of Point Reyes雷耶斯 Station

161000
6000
02:59
in Inverness因弗内斯, California加州, because there were only

03:01
about 350 people there in the winter冬季 – this was back in '71 now.
33
169000
6000
03:07
And so when I came来了 in and I started开始 walking步行 around, people --
34
175000
5000
03:12
they just knew知道 what was going on.
35
180000
2000
03:14
And people would drive驾驶 up next下一个 to me

03:16
and say, "John约翰, what are you doing?"
37
184000
2000
03:18
And I’d say, "Well, I’m walking步行 for the environment环境."
38
186000
4000
03:22
And they said, "No, you’re回覆 walking步行 to make us look bad, right?
39
190000
4000
03:26
You’re回覆 walking步行 to make us feel bad."
40
194000
2000
03:28
And maybe there was some truth真相 to that,
41
196000
2000
03:30
because I thought that if I started开始 walking步行, everyone大家 would follow跟随.
42
198000
5000
03:35
Because of the oil, everybody每个人 talked about the polllutionpolllution.
43
203000
2000
03:37
And so I argued争论 with people about that, I argued争论 and I argued争论.
44
205000
7000
03:44
I called my parents父母 up.
45
212000
2000
03:46
I said, "I’ve已经 given特定 up riding骑术 and driving主动 in cars汽车."
46
214000
2000
03:48
My dad said, "Why didn’t you do that when you were 16?"
47
216000
3000
03:51
(Laughter
48
219000
2000
03:53
I didn’t know about the environment环境 then.
49
221000
1000
03:54
They’re回覆 back in Philadelphia费城.
50
222000
2000
03:56
And so I told my mother母亲, "I’m happy快乐 though虽然, I’m really happy快乐."
51
224000
4000
04:00
She said, "If you were happy快乐, son儿子, you wouldn止跌’t have to say it."
52
228000
3000
04:03
Mothers母亲 are like that.
53
231000
3000
04:06
And so, on my 27th birthday生日 I decided决定, because I argued争论 so much
54
234000
8000
04:14
and I talk so much, that I was going to stop speaking请讲
55
242000
6000
04:20
for just one day -- one day -- to give it a rest休息.
56
248000
4000
04:24
And so I did.
57
252000
3000
04:27
I got up in the morning早上 and I didn’t say a word.
58
255000
3000
04:30
And I have to tell you, it was a very moving移动 experience经验,
59
258000
3000
04:33
because for the first time, I began开始 listening -- in a long time.
60
261000
7000
04:40
And what I heard听说, it kind of disturbed不安 me.
61
268000
4000
04:44
Because what I used to do, when I thought I was listening,
62
272000
3000
04:47
was I would listen just enough足够 to hear what people had to say
63
275000
3000
04:50
and think that I could -- I knew知道 what they were going to say,
64
278000
5000
04:55
and so I stopped停止 listening.
65
283000
2000
04:57
And in my mind心神, I just kind of raced赛跑 ahead
66
285000
3000
05:00
and thought of what I was going to say back,
67
288000
2000
05:02
while they were still finishing精加工 up.
68
290000
2000
05:04
And then I would launch发射 in.
69
292000
2000
05:06
Well, that just ended结束 communication通讯.
70
294000
4000
05:10
So on this first day I actually其实 listened听了.
71
298000
2000
05:12
And it was very sad伤心 for me,
72
300000
2000
05:14
because I realized实现 that for those many许多 years年份 I had not been learning学习.
73
302000
6000
05:20
I was 27. I thought I knew知道 everything.
74
308000
2000
05:25
I didn’t.
75
313000
2000
05:27
And so I decided决定 I’d better do this for another另一个 day,
76
315000
4000
05:31
and another另一个 day, and another另一个 day until直到 finally最后,
77
319000
4000
05:35
I promised许诺 myself for a year I would keep quiet安静
78
323000
3000
05:38
because I started开始 learning学习 more and more and I needed需要 to learn学习 more.
79
326000
4000
05:42
So for a year I said I would keep quiet安静,
80
330000
2000
05:44
and then on my birthday生日 I would reassess重新评估 what I had learned学到了
81
332000
4000
05:48
and maybe I would talk again.
82
336000
2000
05:50
Well, that lasted历时 17 years年份.
83
338000
3000

08:47
and they really wanted to help me along沿 the way.
137
515000
2000
08:49
And during that time, I actually其实 taught classes without speaking请讲.
138
517000
5000
08:54
I had 13 students学生们 when I first walked into the class.
139
522000
3000
08:57
I explained解释, with a friend朋友 who could interpret my sign标志 language语言,
140
525000
6000
09:03
that I was John约翰 Francis弗朗西斯, I was walking步行 around the world世界,
141
531000
2000
09:05
I didn’t talk and this was the last time
142
533000
1000
09:06
this person’s going to be here interpreting解读 for me.
143
534000
3000
09:09
All the students学生们 satSAT around and they went ...
144
537000
3000
09:12
(Laughter
145
540000
5000
09:17
I could see they were looking for the schedule
146
545000
2000
09:19
to see when they could get out.
147
547000
2000
09:21
They had to take that class with me.
148
549000
4000
09:25
Two weeks later后来, everyone大家 was trying to get into our class.
149
553000
3000
09:28
And I learned学到了 in that class -- because I would do things like this ...
150
556000
4000
09:32
and they were all gathered云集 around, going, "What's he trying to say?"
151
560000
2000
09:34
"I don't know, I think he's talking about clear明确 cutting切割."
09:39
"No, no, no, that's not clear明确 cutting切割, that’s -- he's using运用 a handsaw手锯."
153
567000
3000
09:43
"Well, you can’t clearcut皆伐 with a ..."
154
571000
3000
09:46
"Yes, you can clear明确 cut ..."
155
574000
2000
09:48
"No, I think he’s talking about selective可选择的 forestry林业."
156
576000
2000
09:50
Now this was a discussion讨论 class and we were having a discussion讨论.
157
578000
4000
09:54
I just backed已备份 out of that, you know, and I just kind of kept不停 the fists拳头 from flying飞行.
158
582000
3000
09:57
But what I learned学到了 was that sometimes有时 I would make a sign标志
159
585000
4000
10:01
and they said things that I absolutely绝对 did not mean,
160
589000
4000
10:05
but I should have.
161
593000
2000
10:07
And so what came来了 to me is, if you were a teacher老师
162
595000
5000
10:12
and you were teaching教学, if you weren间没有’t learning学习
163
600000
3000
10:15
you probably大概 weren间没有’t teaching教学 very well.
164
603000
2000
10:17
And so I went on.
165
605000
2000
10:19
My dad came来了 out to see me graduate毕业
166
607000
2000
10:21
and, you know, I did the deal合同,
167
609000
2000
10:23
and my father父亲 said, "We’re回覆 really proud骄傲 of you son儿子, but ... "
168
611000
2000
10:25
You know what went on,
169
613000
2000
10:27
he said, "You’ve已经 got to start开始 riding骑术 and driving主动 and start开始 talking.
170
615000
3000
10:30
What are you going to do with a master’s degree?"
171
618000
2000
10:32
I hunched驼背 my shoulder, I got my backpack背包
172
620000
2000
10:34
and I went on to the University大学 of Wisconsin威斯康星.
173
622000
2000
10:37
I spent花费 two years年份 there writing写作 on oil spills泄漏.
174
625000
5000
10:42
No one was interested有兴趣 in oil spills泄漏.
175
630000
2000
10:44
But something happened
176
632000
2000
10:50
And I was the only one in the United联合的 States状态 writing写作 on oil spills泄漏.
178
638000
4000
10:54
My dad came来了 out again.
179
642000
2000
10:56
He said, "I don't know how you do this, son儿子 --
180
644000
2000
10:58
I mean, you don't ride in cars汽车, you don不要’t talk.
181
646000
3000
11:01
My sister妹妹 said maybe I should leave离开 you alone单独,
182
649000
2000
11:03
because you seem似乎 to be doing a lot better
183
651000
2000
11:05
when you’re回覆 not saying anything."
184
653000
2000
11:07
(Laughter
185
655000
3000
11:10
Well, I put on my backpack背包 again.
186
658000
2000
11:12
I put my banjo班卓琴 on and I walked all the way to the East Coast,
187
660000
2000
11:14
put my foot脚丫子 in the Atlantic大西洋 Ocean海洋 --
188
662000
2000
11:16
it was seven years年份 and one day it took me to walk步行 across横过 the United联合的 States状态.
189
664000
4000
11:22
And on Earth地球 Day, 1990 --
190
670000
5000
11:27
the 20th anniversary周年 of Earth地球 Day -- that’s when I began开始 to speak说话.
191
675000
3000
11:30
And that’s why I said, "Thank you for being存在 here."
192
678000
2000
11:32
Because it's sort分类 of like that tree in the forest森林 falling落下;
193
680000
4000
11:36
and if there's no one there to hear, does it really make a sound声音?
194
684000
3000
11:39
And I’m thanking表达感谢 you, and I'm thanking表达感谢 my family家庭
195
687000
3000
11:42
because they had come to hear me speak说话.
196
690000
2000
11:44
And that’s communication
197
692000
3000
11:47
And they also taught me about listening -- that they listened听了 to me.
198
695000
6000
11:53
And it’s one of those things that came来了 out of the silence安静,
199
701000
4000
11:57
the listening to each other.
200
705000
2000
11:59
Really, very important
201
707000
2000
12:01
we need to listen to each other.
202
709000
3000
12:04
Well, my journey旅程 kept不停 going on.
203
712000
2000
12:06
My dad said, "That’s one,"
204
714000
3000
12:09
and I still didn’t let that go.
205
717000
3000
12:12
I worked工作 for the Coastguard海岸警卫队, was made制作 a U.N.
12:15
I wrote regulations法规 for the United联合的 States状态 --
207
723000
3000
12:18
I mean, I wrote oil spill regulations法规.
208
726000
2000
12:20
20 years年份 ago, if someone有人 had said to me,
209
728000
4000
12:24
"John约翰, do you really want to make a difference区别?"
210
732000
3000
12:27
"Yeah, I want to make a difference区别."
211
735000
1000
12:28
He said, "You just start开始 walking步行 east;
212
736000
2000
12:30
get out of your car汽车 and just start开始 walking步行 east."
213
738000
3000
12:33
And as I walked off a little bit, they'd他们会 say, "Yeah, and shut关闭 up, too."
214
741000
4000
12:37
(Laughter
215
745000
3000
12:40
"You’re回覆 going to make a difference区别, buddy伙伴."
216
748000
2000
12:42
How could that be, how could that be?
217
750000
3000
12:45
How could doing such这样 a simple简单 thing like walking步行 and not talking
218
753000
4000
12:49
make a difference区别?
219
757000
2000
12:51
Well, my time at the Coast Guard守卫 was a really good time.
220
759000
4000
12:55
And after that -- I only worked工作 one year --
221
763000
3000
12:58
I said, "That's enough足够. One year's年份 enough足够 for me to do that."
222
766000
4000
13:02
I got on a sailboat帆船 and I sailed航行 down to the Caribbean加勒比,
223
770000
3000
13:05
and walked through通过 all of the islands岛屿, and to Venezuela委内瑞拉.
224
773000
7000
13:12
And you know, I forgot忘记 the most important重要 thing,
225
780000
4000
13:16
which哪一个 is why I started开始 talking, which哪一个 I have to tell you.
226
784000
5000
13:21
I started开始 talking because I had studied研究 environment环境.
227
789000
5000
13:26
I’d studied研究 environment环境 at this formal正式 level水平,
228
794000
4000
13:30
but there was this informal非正式的 level水平.
229
798000
2000
13:32
And the informal非正式的 level水平 --
230
800000
3000
13:35
I learned学到了 about people, and what we do and how we are.
231
803000
6000
13:41
And environment环境 changed from just being存在 about trees树木 and birds鸟类
232
809000
3000
13:44
and endangered濒危 species种类 to being存在 about how we treated治疗 each other.
233
812000
6000
13:50
Because if we are the environment环境,
234
818000
2000
13:52
then all we need to do is look around us
235
820000
2000
13:54
and see how we treat对待 ourselves我们自己 and how we treat对待 each other.
236
822000
5000
13:59
And so that’s the message信息 that I had.
237
827000
4000
14:03
And I said, "Well, I'm going to have to spread传播 that message信息."
238
831000
2000
14:05
And I got in my sailboat帆船, sailed航行 all the way through通过 the Caribbean加勒比 --
239
833000
4000
14:09
it wasn't really my sailboat帆船, I kind of worked工作 on that boat --
240
837000
4000
14:13
got to Venezuela委内瑞拉 and I started开始 walking步行.
241
841000
4000
14:17
This is the last part部分 of this story故事, because it’s how I got here,
242
845000
3000
14:20
because I still didn't ride in motorized机动的 vehicles汽车.
243
848000
3000
14:23
I was walking步行 through通过 El萨尔瓦多 Dorado多拉多 -- it's a prison监狱 town, famous著名 prison监狱,
244
851000
7000
14:30
or infamous臭名昭著 prison监狱 -- in Venezuela委内瑞拉, and I don不要’t know what possessed拥有 me,
245
858000
5000
14:35
because this was not like me.
246
863000
2000
14:37
There I am, walking步行 past过去 the guard守卫 gate and the guard守卫 stops停止 and says,
247
865000
7000
14:44
"PasaportePasaporte, pasaportepasaporte," and with an M16 pointed at me.
248
872000
5000
14:49
And I looked看着 at him and I said, "Passport护照, huh?
249
877000
4000
14:53
I don't need to show显示 you my passport护照. It’s in the back of my pack.
250
881000
3000
14:56
I'm Dr博士. I'm a U.N. Ambassador大使 and I'm walking步行 around the world世界."
251
884000
6000
15:02
And I started开始 walking步行 off.
252
890000
2000
15:04
What possessed拥有 me to say this thing?
253
892000
2000
15:09
The road turned转身 into the jungle丛林.
254
897000
2000
15:11
I didn’t get shot射击.
255
899000
2000
15:13
And I got to -- I start开始 saying, "Free自由 at last --
256
901000
4000
15:17
thank God Almighty大能, I’m free自由 at last."
257
905000
3000
15:24
"What was that about," I’m saying. What was that about?
258
912000
3000
15:27
It took me 100 miles英里 to figure数字 out that, in my heart, in me,
259
915000
8000
15:35
I had become成为 a prisoner囚犯.
260
923000
3000
15:38
I was a prisoner囚犯 and I needed需要 to escape逃逸.
261
926000
4000
15:42
The prison监狱 that I was in was the fact事实 that I did not drive驾驶
262
930000
6000
15:48
or use motorized机动的 vehicles汽车.
263
936000
2000
15:50
Now how could that be?
264
938000
2000
15:52
Because when I started开始, it seemed似乎 very appropriate适当 to me
265
940000
4000
15:56
not to use motorized机动的 vehicles汽车.
266
944000
2000
15:58
But the thing that was different不同
267
946000
2000
16:00
was that every一切 birthday生日, I asked myself about silence安静,
268
948000
3000
16:03
but I never asked myself about my decision决定 to just use my feet.
269
951000
8000
16:11
I had no idea理念 I was going to become成为 a U.N. Ambassador大使.
270
959000
3000
16:14
I had no idea理念 I would have a Ph博士.D.
271
962000
4000
16:18
And so I realized实现 that I had a responsibility责任 to more than just me,
272
966000
6000
16:24
and that I was going to have to change更改.
273
972000
2000
16:26
You know, we can do it.
274

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
John Francis - Planet walker
John Francis walks the Earth, carrying a message of careful, truly sustainable development and respect for our planet.

Why you should listen

One day in 1983, John Francis stepped out on a walk. For the next 22 years, he trekked and sailed around North and South America, carrying a message of respect for the Earth -- for 17 of those years, without speaking. During his monumental, silent trek, he earned
an MA in environmental studies and a PhD in land resources.

Today his Planetwalk foundation consults on sustainable development and works with educational groups to teach kids about the environment.
