ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kailash Satyarthi - Children’s rights activist
2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi is a tireless activist fighting to protect the rights of voiceless children everywhere.

Why you should listen
Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has been leading the global fight against child slavery for over three decades.  As the founder of a grassroots nonprofit, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save Childhood Movement, he has rescued more than 80,000 Indian children to date from various forms of exploitation from child labor to child trafficking.

Kailash’s work has involved organizing almost weekly raid, rescue and recovery missions on workplaces that employ and enslave children. Since 2001, Satyarthi’s has risked his own life to rescue these children and has convinced families in more than 300 Indian villages to avoid sending their children to work, and instead putting them in school.

Satyarthi’s has also managed to grab and retain the world’s attention on the problem. He organized the Global March Against Child Labor in the 1990s to raise awareness and free millions of children shackled in various forms of modern slavery. His activism was also instrumental in the adoption of Convention No. 182 by the International Labour Organization, a statue that's become a guideline for many governments on child labor.

In 2014, he and Malala Yousafzai were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”

Today, I am going to talk about anger.

1111
5340
Hoje, eu vou falar sobre a raiva.
00:21
When I was 11,
1
9128
2002
Quando eu tinha 11 anos,
00:23
seeing some of my friends
leaving the school
2
11130
3332
ver alguns amigos saindo da escola
00:26
because their parents
could not afford textbooks
3
14462
4222
porque seus pais não
podiam comprar livros
00:30
made me angry.
4
18684
2502
me deixou com raiva.
00:35
When I was 27,
5
23316
2752
Quando eu tinha 27 anos,
00:38
hearing the plight
of a desperate slave father
6
26068
5212
ouvir o lamento
de um pai escravo desesperado
00:43
whose daughter was
about to be sold to a brothel
7
31280
5012
porque sua filha
estava para ser vendida a um bordel
00:48
made me angry.
8
36302
2381
me deixou com raiva.
Quando eu tinha 50 anos,
00:52
At the age of 50,
9
40423
2340
00:54
lying on the street,
in a pool of blood,
10
42763
4823
estar deitado na rua
em uma poça de sangue
00:59
along with my own son,
11
47586
2946
com o meu próprio filho
me deixou com raiva.
01:02
made me angry.
12
50532
2467
Caros amigos, por séculos
aprendemos que a raiva é ruim.
01:07
Dear friends, for centuries
we were taught anger is bad.
13
55299
5185
Nossos pais, professores, padres --
01:13
Our parents, teachers, priests --
14
61274
2212
01:15
everyone taught us how to control
and suppress our anger.
15
63486
5885
todo mundo nos ensinou
a controlar e suprimir nossa raiva.
01:24
But I ask why?
16
72241
1905
Mas por quê?
01:27
Why can't we convert our anger
for the larger good of society?
17
75596
4917
Por que não podemos transformá-la
em algo para o bem da sociedade?
01:32
Why can't we use our anger
18
80513
1596
Por que não podemos usar nossa raiva
para desafiar e mudar os males do mundo?
01:34
to challenge and change
the evils of the world?
19
82109
3506
01:41
That I tried to do.
20
89705
2471
Isso eu tentei fazer.
01:46
Friends,
21
94036
1811
Amigos,
01:49
most of the brightest ideas
came to my mind out of anger.
22
97367
6003
foi a raiva que gerou a maioria
das minhas melhores ideias.
01:55
Like when I was 35 and sat
in a locked-up, tiny prison.
23
103814
9700
Como quando eu, aos 35 anos,
estava trancado em uma prisão minúscula.
02:06
The whole night, I was angry.
24
114564
2503
Eu fiquei com raiva a noite inteira.
02:09
But it has given birth to a new idea.
25
117957
3060
E essa raiva me fez ter uma ideia nova.
02:13
But I will come to that later on.
26
121017
3159
Eu falarei disso depois.
02:16
Let me begin with the story
of how I got a name for myself.
27
124176
6865
Vou começar contando a história
de como eu me tornei conhecido.
02:25
I had been a big admirer
of Mahatma Gandhi since my childhood.
28
133481
4141
Eu sempre fui, desde criança,
um grande admirador de Mahatma Gandhi.
02:31
Gandhi fought and lead
India's freedom movement.
29
139032
5289
Gandhi lutou e liderou
o movimento pela liberdade da Índia.
02:37
But more importantly,
30
145261
2038
Mas, mais importante ainda,
02:39
he taught us how to treat
the most vulnerable sections,
31
147299
6735
ele nos ensinou como tratar
as partes mais vulneráveis,
02:46
the most deprived people,
with dignity and respect.
32
154034
4271
as pessoas mais miseráveis,
com respeito e dignidade.
02:51
And so, when India was celebrating
33
159595
4967
Assim, enquanto a Índia celebrava
o centenário do nascimento de Gandhi
02:56
Mahatma Gandhi's
birth centenary in 1969 --
34
164562
3267
em 1969 --
na época eu tinha 15 anos --
02:59
at that time I was 15 --
35
167829
2288
03:02
an idea came to my mind.
36
170117
2357
eu tive uma ideia.
03:05
Why can't we celebrate it differently?
37
173774
3470
Por que não celebrar de outra forma?
03:09
I knew, as perhaps
many of you might know,
38
177244
5428
Eu sei, e vocês talvez saibam também,
03:14
that in India, a large number of people
are born in the lowest segment of caste.
39
182672
7993
que, na Índia, um grande número de pessoas
nasce na casta mais baixa.
03:24
And they are treated as untouchables.
40
192185
3139
E eles são tratados como intocáveis.
03:27
These are the people --
41
195324
1332
Essas pessoas --
03:28
forget about allowing them
to go to the temples,
42
196656
4410
esqueça deixá-los frequentar os templos,
03:33
they cannot even go into the houses
and shops of high-caste people.
43
201066
7184
eles não podem nem entrar nas casas
e lojas das pessoas de alta casta.
Então eu fiquei muito impressionado
com os líderes da minha cidade
03:40
So I was very impressed with
the leaders of my town
44
208250
5314
03:45
who were speaking very highly against
the caste system and untouchability
45
213564
4538
que estavam falando com veemência
contra as castas e a intocabilidade
03:50
and talking of Gandhian ideals.
46
218102
2172
e pregando os ideais de Gandhi.
03:53
So inspired by that, I thought,
let us set an example
47
221774
3170
Isso me inspirou e eu pensei:
"vamos dar um exemplo,
03:56
by inviting these people to eat food
cooked and served
48
224944
6445
convidando essas pessoas para comer
pratos preparados e servidos
04:03
by the untouchable community.
49
231389
3230
pela comunidade dos intocáveis."
04:06
I went to some low-caste,
so-called untouchable, people,
50
234619
4932
Eu fui falar com alguns dos cidadãos
de casta baixa, os tais intocáveis,
04:13
tried to convince them,
but it was unthinkable for them.
51
241421
4386
tentei convencê-los,
mas para eles era impensável.
04:17
They told me, "No, no. It's not possible.
It never happened."
52
245807
3953
Eles disseram: "Não, não. Não é possível.
isso nunca foi feito."
E eu disse: "Olhem para esses líderes,
04:23
I said, "Look at these leaders,
53
251070
1714
04:24
they are so great,
they are against untouchability.
54
252784
2437
eles são incríveis, estão falando
contra a intocabilidade.
04:27
They will come. If nobody comes,
we can set an example."
55
255221
2690
Eles virão. Se ninguém vier,
estaremos dando um exemplo."
04:32
These people thought that I was too naive.
56
260891
5860
Eles acharam que eu era ingênuo demais.
04:40
Finally, they were convinced.
57
268161
2490
Mas, finalmente, eu os convenci.
04:42
My friends and I took our bicycles
and invited political leaders.
58
270651
5701
Meus amigos e eu pegamos nossas bicicletas
e convidamos líderes políticos.
04:49
And I was so thrilled, rather, empowered
59
277982
3144
Eu estava em êxtase, ou melhor, inspirado
04:53
to see that each one of them
agreed to come.
60
281126
4596
quando cada um deles concordou em vir.
04:59
I thought, "Great idea.
We can set an example.
61
287192
2891
Eu pensei: "Que ideia genial.
Nós podemos dar um exemplo.
05:02
We can bring about change in the society."
62
290083
3628
Podemos mudar a sociedade."
05:07
The day has come.
63
295451
1553
Chegou o dia.
Todos aqueles intocáveis,
três mulheres e dois homens,
05:09
All these untouchables,
three women and two men,
64
297724
5743
05:15
they agreed to come.
65
303467
3349
eles concordaram em vir.
05:19
I could recall that they had used
the best of their clothes.
66
307436
5639
Eu lembro que eles usaram
suas melhores roupas.
05:26
They brought new utensils.
67
314475
2265
Trouxeram utensílios novos.
05:30
They had taken baths
hundreds of times
68
318000
2339
Tomaram centenas de banhos,
05:32
because it was unthinkable
for them to do.
69
320339
2961
porque era impensável
fazer o que eles iam fazer.
05:35
It was the moment of change.
70
323300
2644
Era o momento da mudança.
05:39
They gathered. Food was cooked.
71
327254
2448
Eles se juntaram. A comida foi preparada.
Isso às 7h da noite.
05:42
It was 7 o'clock.
72
330402
2598
05:45
By 8 o'clock, we kept on waiting,
73
333000
2876
Até as 8h, nós ficamos esperando,
05:47
because it's not very uncommon
that the leaders become late,
74
335876
4981
afinal não era estranho
os líderes se atrasarem uma hora e pouco.
05:52
for an hour or so.
75
340857
1682
05:55
So after 8 o'clock, we took our bicycles
and went to these leaders' homes,
76
343239
6683
Depois disso, pegamos nossas bicicletas
e fomos até suas casas,
06:01
just to remind them.
77
349922
2356
só para lembrá-los do compromisso.
06:06
One of the leader's wives told me,
78
354248
4697
A mulher de um deles disse:
06:10
"Sorry, he is having some headache,
perhaps he cannot come."
79
358945
5015
"Desculpe, ele está com dor de cabeça,
acho que não poderá ir."
06:15
I went to another leader
80
363960
2077
Eu fui em outra casa
06:18
and his wife told me,
"Okay, you go, he will definitely join."
81
366037
4060
e a mulher disse:
"Vá na frente, ele encontra vocês lá."
06:23
So I thought that the dinner
will take place,
82
371357
4112
E eu pensei que o jantar
ainda aconteceria,
06:27
though not at that large a scale.
83
375469
4483
só talvez em uma escala menor.
06:33
I went back to the venue, which was
a newly built Mahatma Gandhi Park.
84
381352
5967
Eu voltei para o lugar,
que era um novo Parque Mahatma Gandhi.
06:40
It was 10 o'clock.
85
388559
1494
Eram 10h.
06:43
None of the leaders showed up.
86
391483
3339
E nenhum dos líderes apareceu.
06:48
That made me angry.
87
396132
2703
Isso me deixou com raiva.
06:52
I was standing, leaning against
Mahatma Gandhi's statue.
88
400275
6404
Eu fiquei de pé,
apoiado na estátua de Gandhi.
07:01
I was emotionally drained,
rather exhausted.
89
409839
4471
Estava emocionalmente exaurido,
muito exausto.
07:08
Then I sat down where
the food was lying.
90
416890
5485
E eu me sentei onde a comida estava,
minhas emoções estavam sob controle.
07:17
I kept my emotions on hold.
91
425695
2090
07:19
But then, when I took the first bite,
92
427785
4494
Mas então, na primeira mordida,
07:24
I broke down in tears.
93
432279
2931
eu desabei a chorar.
07:27
And suddenly I felt a hand on my shoulder.
94
435210
4939
E, de repente, eu sinto
uma mão no meu ombro.
07:32
And it was the healing, motherly touch
of an untouchable woman.
95
440149
5898
Era o toque curativo e maternal
de uma mulher intocável.
07:38
And she told me,
"Kailash, why are you crying?
96
446047
4231
Ela disse: "Kailash,
por que está chorando?
07:43
You have done your bit.
97
451598
2413
Você fez sua parte.
07:46
You have eaten the food
cooked by untouchables,
98
454011
3125
Você comeu a comida feita
por um intocável,
07:49
which has never happened in our memory."
99
457136
2991
algo que nunca foi feito
em nossas vidas."
Ela disse: "Hoje, você venceu."
07:53
She said, "You won today."
100
461207
4582
E como ela estava certa, meus amigos.
07:57
And my friends, she was right.
101
465789
4970
08:04
I came back home, a little after midnight,
102
472059
3730
Eu voltei para casa,
logo depois da meia-noite,
08:07
shocked to see that several
high-caste elderly people
103
475789
4574
e fiquei chocado de ver
vários idosos de casta alta
08:12
were sitting in my courtyard.
104
480363
2154
sentados no pátio da minha casa.
08:14
I saw my mother and
elderly women were crying
105
482517
3096
Eu vi minha mãe
e outras senhoras chorando,
08:17
and they were pleading
to these elderly people
106
485613
4458
implorando para os outros idosos,
08:22
because they had threatened
to outcaste my whole family.
107
490071
2934
porque eles tinham ameaçado
ostracizar minha família inteira.
08:26
And you know, outcasting the family
is the biggest social punishment
108
494345
5132
E, saibam, ostracizar uma família
é a maior punição social
08:31
one can think of.
109
499477
2554
concebível na Índia.
08:35
Somehow they agreed to punish only me,
and the punishment was purification.
110
503981
4840
De algum jeito, eles concordaram em
punir somente a mim, com purificação.
08:40
That means I had to go 600 miles
away from my hometown
111
508821
4515
Isso quer dizer andar
quase mil quilômetros da minha cidade
08:45
to the River Ganges to take a holy dip.
112
513336
3931
até o Rio Ganges e tomar um banho sagrado.
08:49
And after that, I should organize a feast
for priests, 101 priests,
113
517267
4424
Depois eu teria que fazer um banquete
para padres, 101 padres,
08:53
wash their feet and drink that water.
114
521691
3548
lavar seus pés e beber a mesma água.
08:58
It was total nonsense,
115
526529
2999
Um absurdo completo,
09:01
and I refused to accept that punishment.
116
529528
2889
e eu recusei essa punição.
09:05
How did they punish me?
117
533267
2130
Como me puniram, afinal?
09:07
I was barred from entering into my own
kitchen and my own dining room,
118
535397
5797
Eu fui impedido de entrar
na minha própria cozinha e sala de jantar,
09:13
my utensils were separated.
119
541194
3052
meus utensílios foram separados.
09:16
But the night when I was angry,
they wanted to outcaste me.
120
544246
5054
Mas na noite em que eu estava zangado,
eles queriam me ostracizar.
09:22
But I decided to outcaste
the entire caste system.
121
550600
4033
Então eu decidi ostracizar
o sistema de castas inteiro.
09:27
(Applause)
122
555503
4725
(Aplausos)
09:32
And that was possible because
the beginning would have been
123
560988
5015
E isso foi possível porque
o primeiro passo seria
09:38
to change the family name, or surname,
124
566003
2116
mudar o nome da família, o sobrenome,
09:40
because in India, most of the
family names are caste names.
125
568119
3665
já que, na Índia, a maioria dos nomes
de família são nomes de casta.
09:43
So I decided to drop my name.
126
571784
2522
Então eu decidi me livrar
do meu sobrenome.
09:46
And then, later on, I gave
a new name to myself: Satyarthi,
127
574306
6504
E depois, mais tarde,
eu escolhi um novo: Satyarthi,
09:52
that means, "seeker of truth."
128
580810
2966
que significa
"aquele que busca a verdade."
09:57
(Applause)
129
585216
4032
(Aplausos)
10:01
And that was the beginning
of my transformative anger.
130
589248
3337
E esse foi o início
da minha metamorfose pela raiva.
10:06
Friends, maybe one of you can tell me,
131
594095
2609
Meus amigos, talvez um de vocês
saiba me responder:
10:08
what was I doing before becoming
a children's rights activist?
132
596704
4826
o que eu fazia antes de virar
um ativista dos direitos das crianças?
10:14
Does anybody know?
133
602410
1378
Alguém aqui sabe?
10:16
No.
134
604898
1271
Não.
10:18
I was an engineer, an electrical engineer.
135
606169
6389
Eu era engenheiro. Engenheiro elétrico.
10:24
And then I learned how the energy
136
612558
5104
E daí eu aprendi como a energia
do fogo, do carvão,
10:29
of burning fire, coal,
137
617662
4484
10:34
the nuclear blast inside the chambers,
138
622146
4104
da explosão nuclear de um reator,
da corrente de um rio,
10:38
raging river currents,
139
626250
3192
10:41
fierce winds,
140
629442
3624
de ventos ferozes,
10:45
could be converted into the light
and lives of millions.
141
633066
5017
como todas elas eram convertidas
para dar luz e vida a milhões.
10:50
I also learned how the most
uncontrollable form of energy
142
638963
4532
E eu também aprendi como até mesmo
a mais incontrolável forma de energia
10:55
could be harnessed for good
and making society better.
143
643495
4475
pode ser usada para o bem
e para tornar a sociedade melhor.
11:04
So I'll come back to the story of
when I was caught in the prison:
144
652925
6767
Agora, de volta à história
de quando eu estava preso:
11:11
I was very happy freeing
a dozen children from slavery,
145
659692
4227
eu estava muito feliz
libertando doze crianças da escravidão
11:15
handing them over to their parents.
146
663919
2971
e as devolvendo para seus pais.
11:18
I cannot explain my joy
when I free a child.
147
666890
3188
Não há palavras que definam
minha alegria de libertar uma criança.
11:23
I was so happy.
148
671238
1190
Eu estava muito feliz.
11:25
But when I was waiting for my train
to come back to my hometown, Delhi,
149
673458
5563
Mas quando eu estava esperando o trem
de volta a Déli, minha cidade,
11:31
I saw that dozens of children
were arriving;
150
679021
3243
eu vi dezenas de crianças chegando;
11:34
they were being trafficked by someone.
151
682264
3298
elas estavam sendo traficadas por alguém.
11:37
I stopped them, those people.
152
685562
2853
Eu parei essa pessoa.
11:40
I complained to the police.
153
688415
2102
Eu chamei a polícia.
11:42
So the policemen, instead of helping me,
154
690517
4554
E o policial, em vez de me ajudar,
me jogou em uma cela minúscula,
como se eu fosse um animal.
11:47
they threw me in this small,
tiny shell, like an animal.
155
695071
5702
11:53
And that was the night of anger
156
701573
1548
E essa foi a noite de raiva
11:55
when one of the brightest
and biggest ideas was born.
157
703121
3851
que gerou uma das maiores
e mais brilhantes ideias que eu já tive.
11:59
I thought that if I keep on freeing 10
children, and 50 more will join,
158
707632
5468
Eu percebi que se eu libertar 10 crianças,
mas outras 50 forem escravizadas,
12:05
that's not done.
159
713100
1460
eu não cheguei a lugar nenhum,
12:06
And I believed in the power of consumers,
160
714560
2808
Eu acreditava no poder dos consumidores,
12:09
and let me tell you that this
was the first time
161
717368
3484
e me permitam dizer
que essa foi a primeira campanha,
tanto minha quanto do mundo todo,
12:12
when a campaign was launched by me
or anywhere in the world,
162
720852
5116
12:17
to educate and sensitize the consumers
163
725968
4073
pela educação e sensibilização
dos consumidores
12:22
to create a demand
for child-labor-free rugs.
164
730041
4460
e pela criação de uma demanda por tapetes
feitos sem mão de obra infantil.
12:27
In Europe and America,
we have been successful.
165
735691
3392
Tivemos sucesso na Europa e nas Américas.
12:31
And it has resulted
in a fall in child labor
166
739083
4685
E o resultado foi uma queda
de 80% na mão de obra infantil
12:35
in South Asian countries by 80 percent.
167
743768
3256
nos países do sul da Ásia.
12:39
(Applause)
168
747024
3382
(Aplausos)
12:44
Not only that, but this first-ever
consumer's power, or consumer's campaign
169
752736
6661
Não só isso, como essa primeira
campanha dos consumidores
12:51
has grown in other countries
and other industries,
170
759397
4108
cresceu em outros países
e mesmo em outras indústrias,
12:55
maybe chocolate, maybe apparel,
maybe shoes -- it has gone beyond.
171
763505
5426
como chocolate,
roupas, sapatos, ela foi além.
Da raiva que eu tive aos 11 anos,
13:03
My anger at the age of 11,
172
771271
1552
13:04
when I realized how important
education is for every child,
173
772823
5353
quando percebi o quão importante
a educação é para toda criança,
13:10
I got an idea to collect used books
and help the poorest children.
174
778176
7645
nasceu a ideia de coletar livros usados
e ajudar aquelas que eram mais pobres.
13:17
I created a book bank at the age of 11.
175
785821
3449
Eu criei um banco de livros
aos 11 anos de idade.
13:22
But I did not stop.
176
790570
1243
Mas eu não parei.
13:23
Later on, I cofounded
177
791813
2233
Mais tarde, eu cofundei a maior
campanha civil pela educação do mundo,
13:26
the world's single largest civil society
campaign for education
178
794046
4534
13:30
that is the Global Campaign for Education.
179
798580
2991
a Global Campaign for Education.
13:34
That has helped in changing
the whole thinking towards education
180
802221
4645
Ela ajudou a mudar
toda a atitude sobre a educação,
13:38
from the charity mode
to the human rights mode,
181
806866
2391
do "modo caridade"
para o "modo direitos humanos",
13:41
and that has concretely helped
the reduction of out-of-school children
182
809257
4769
e isso ajudou, de maneira concreta,
a reduzir pela metade
13:46
by half in the last 15 years.
183
814026
3588
o número de crianças fora da escola
nos últimos 15 anos.
13:49
(Applause)
184
817614
4079
(Aplausos)
13:55
My anger at the age of 27,
185
823753
3114
A minha raiva aos 27 anos,
13:58
to free that girl who was about
to be sold to a brothel,
186
826867
5368
de libertar a garota que
ia ser vendida para o bordel,
14:04
has given me an idea
187
832235
4783
me deu a ideia de criar
uma nova estratégia de busca e apreensão
14:09
to go for a new strategy
of raid and rescue,
188
837018
4253
para libertar crianças da escravidão.
14:13
freeing children from slavery.
189
841271
2917
14:16
And I am so lucky and proud to say
that it is not one or 10 or 20,
190
844758
5856
E eu tenho muita sorte e orgulho de dizer
que não são uma, dez ou vinte.
14:22
but my colleagues and I have been able
to physically liberate 83,000 child slaves
191
850614
6343
Meus colegas e eu conseguimos libertar
83 mil crianças escravas
e devolvê-las às suas mães e famílias.
14:28
and hand them over
back to their families and mothers.
192
856962
3131
14:32
(Applause)
193
860093
3359
(Aplausos)
14:37
I knew that we needed global policies.
194
865692
2287
Eu sabia que precisávamos
de políticas globais.
14:39
We organized the worldwide marches
against child labor
195
867979
3032
Nós organizamos as marchas internacionais
contra o trabalho infantil
14:43
and that has also resulted in
a new international convention
196
871011
6062
e isso também gerou
uma nova convenção internacional
14:49
to protect the children
who are in the worst forms.
197
877073
4099
para proteger as crianças
em estado de risco.
14:54
And the concrete result was that
the number of child laborers globally
198
882262
4089
E o resultado concreto
foi a redução em um terço
14:58
has gone down by one third
in the last 15 years.
199
886351
5540
da quantidade de crianças trabalhando
nos últimos 15 anos no mundo todo.
15:03
(Applause)
200
891891
4420
(Aplausos)
15:08
So, in each case,
201
896311
3410
Cada um desses exemplos
começou com a raiva
15:11
it began from anger,
202
899721
3789
e virou uma ideia, uma ação.
15:15
turned into an idea,
203
903510
2649
15:18
and action.
204
906159
3406
15:21
So anger, what next?
205
909565
2876
Então, primeiro a raiva e depois?
15:24
Idea, and --
206
912441
2479
Ideia e...
15:26
Audience: Action
207
914920
1358
(Plateia): Ação.
15:28
Kailash Satyarthi: Anger, idea, action.
Which I tried to do.
208
916278
4557
Kailash: Raiva, ideia, ação.
É isso que eu tentei fazer.
15:34
Anger is a power, anger is an energy,
209
922254
2497
A raiva é um poder, uma energia,
15:36
and the law of nature is that energy
210
924751
2801
e as leis da natureza dizem
que energia não se cria,
não se dissipa e não se destrói.
15:39
can never be created and never
be vanished, can never be destroyed.
211
927552
5243
15:44
So why can't the energy of anger
be translated and harnessed
212
932795
6890
Então, por que não transformar
e aproveitar a energia da raiva
15:51
to create a better and beautiful world,
a more just and equitable world?
213
939685
4536
para criar um mundo melhor, mais bonito,
mais justo e mais equilibrado?
A raiva está dentro de cada um de vocês,
15:56
Anger is within each one of you,
214
944861
2480
15:59
and I will share a secret
for a few seconds:
215
947341
5900
e eu vou contar um segredo rapidamente:
16:05
that if we are confined in
the narrow shells of egos,
216
953241
7554
se ficarmos confinados
às apertadas conchas do ego
16:12
and the circles of selfishness,
217
960795
4430
e aos círculos do egoísmo,
16:17
then the anger will turn out to be
hatred, violence, revenge, destruction.
218
965225
7484
a raiva vai virar ódio,
violência, vingança, destruição.
Mas se pudermos romper os círculos,
16:25
But if we are able to break the circles,
219
973539
3056
16:28
then the same anger could turn
into a great power.
220
976595
5886
a mesma raiva pode virar
um grande poder.
16:34
We can break the circles
by using our inherent compassion
221
982481
4347
Nós podemos quebrar os círculos
usando a compaixão que nos é inata
16:38
and connect with the world through
compassion to make this world better.
222
986828
3850
e, através dela, nos conectarmos
com o mundo e torná-lo melhor.
16:42
That same anger could be
transformed into it.
223
990678
3673
Essa mesma raiva pode fazer isso.
16:46
So dear friends, sisters and brothers,
again, as a Nobel Laureate,
224
994351
4585
Então, caros amigos, irmãos e irmãs,
novamente, como ganhador do Nobel,
16:51
I am urging you to become angry.
225
999956
2755
eu os encorajo a ficar com raiva,
16:55
I am urging you to become angry.
226
1003841
3142
eu os encorajo a ficar com raiva.
17:00
And the angriest among us
227
1008003
4296
E o mais irado entre nós
17:04
is the one who can transform his anger
into idea and action.
228
1012299
7211
é aquele que pode transformar
sua raiva em ideia e ação.
17:12
Thank you so much.

Chris, let me tell you,
and that is the truth,
234
1044341

Chris, eu vou te falar a verdade.
17:40
each time when I free a child,
235
1048335
4514
Cada vez que eu liberto uma criança,
17:44
the child who has lost all his hope
that he will ever come back to his mother,
236
1052849
4179
alguém que perdeu toda a esperança
de voltar a ver sua mãe,
17:49
the first smile of freedom,
237
1057028
4307
aquele primeiro sorriso de liberdade,
17:53
and the mother who has lost all hope

de ter seu filho ou filha de volta,

elas ficam muito emocionadas

243
1081154

E eu tenho tanta sorte de ver o meu Deus
nos rostos dessas crianças,
18:18
I have been able to witness my God
in the faces of those children
244
1086032

como eu disse, não uma,
