ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kailash Satyarthi - Children’s rights activist
2014 Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi is a tireless activist fighting to protect the rights of voiceless children everywhere.

Why you should listen
Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi has been leading the global fight against child slavery for over three decades.  As the founder of a grassroots nonprofit, Bachpan Bachao Andolan, or Save Childhood Movement, he has rescued more than 80,000 Indian children to date from various forms of exploitation from child labor to child trafficking.

Kailash’s work has involved organizing almost weekly raid, rescue and recovery missions on workplaces that employ and enslave children. Since 2001, Satyarthi’s has risked his own life to rescue these children and has convinced families in more than 300 Indian villages to avoid sending their children to work, and instead putting them in school.

Satyarthi’s has also managed to grab and retain the world’s attention on the problem. He organized the Global March Against Child Labor in the 1990s to raise awareness and free millions of children shackled in various forms of modern slavery. His activism was also instrumental in the adoption of Convention No. 182 by the International Labour Organization, a statue that's become a guideline for many governments on child labor.

In 2014, he and Malala Yousafzai were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for “their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education.”

01:55
Like when I was 35 and satSAT

23
103814

02:06
The whole整個 night, I was angry憤怒.
24
114564
2503
02:09
But it has given特定 birth分娩 to a new idea理念.
25
117957

02:13
But I will come to that later後來 on.
26
121017

02:16
Let me begin開始 with the story故事
of how I got a name名稱 for myself.
27
124176
6865
02:25
I had been a big admirer
of Mahatma聖雄 Gandhi甘地 since以來 my childhood童年.
28
133481
4141

02:37
But more importantly
30

02:39
he taught us how to treat對待

02:51
And so, when India印度 was celebrating慶祝
33
159595
4967

03:02
an idea理念 came來了 to my mind心神.
36
170117
2357
03:05
Why can't we celebrate慶祝 it differently不同?
37
173774
3470
03:09
I knew知道, as perhaps也許
many許多 of you might威力 know,
38
177244
5428
03:14
that in India印度, a large number of people
are born天生 in the lowest最低 segment分割 of caste種姓.
39
182672
7993
03:24
And they are treated治療 as untouchables惹不起.
40
192185
3139
03:27
These are the people --
41
195324
1332
03:28
forget忘記 about allowing允許 them

42
196656

03:33
they cannot不能 even go into the houses房屋
and shops商店 of high-caste高種姓 people.
43
201066
7184
03:40
So I was very impressed印象深刻 with
the leaders領導者 of my town
44
208250
5314
03:45
who were speaking請講 very highly高度 against反對
the caste種姓 system系統 and untouchability賤民
45
213564
4538
03:50
and talking of Gandhian甘地 ideals理想.
46
218102
2172
03:53
So inspired啟發 by that, I thought,
let us set an example
47
221774
3170
03:56
by inviting誘人的 these people to eat food餐飲
cooked and served提供服務
48
224944
6445
04:03
by the untouchable碰不得 community社區.
49
231389
3230
04:06
I went to some low-caste
04:13
tried試著 to convince說服 them,
but it was unthinkable不可思議的 for them.
51
241421
4386
04:17
They told me, "No, no. It's not possible可能.
It never happened發生."
52
245807
3953
04:23
I said, "Look at these leaders領導者,
53
251070
1714
04:24
they are so great,
they are against反對 untouchability賤民.
54
252784
2437
04:27
They will come. If nobody沒有人 comes,
we can set an example."
55
255221
2690
04:32
These people thought that I was too naive
56
260891
5860
04:40
Finally最後, they were convinced相信.
57
268161
2490
04:42
My friends朋友 and I took our bicycles自行車
04:49
And I was so thrilled高興, rather, empowered授權
59
277982
3144
04:53
to see that each one of them
agreed約定 to come.
60
281126
4596
04:59
I thought, "Great idea理念.
We can set an example.
61
287192
2891
05:02
We can bring帶來 about change更改 in the society社會."
62
290083
3628
05:07
The day has come.
63
295451
1553
05:09
All these untouchables
three women婦女 and two men男人,
64
297724
5743
05:15
they agreed約定 to come.
65
303467
3349
05:19
I could recall召回 that they had used
the best最好 of their clothes衣服.
66
307436
5639
05:26
They brought new utensils
67
314475
2265
05:30
They had taken採取 baths
hundreds數以百計 of times
68
318000
2339
05:32
because it was unthinkable不可思議的
for them to do.
69
320339
2961
05:35
It was the moment時刻 of change更改.
70
323300
2644
05:39
They gathered雲集. Food餐飲 was cooked.
71
327254
2448
05:42
It was 7 o'clock.
72
330402
2598
05:45
By 8 o'clock, we kept不停 on waiting等候,
73
333000
2876
05:47
because it's not very uncommon罕見
that the leaders領導者 become成為 late晚了,
74
335876
4981
05:52
for an hour小時 or so.
75
340857
1682
05:55
So after 8 o'clock, we took our bicycles自行車
and went to these leaders'領導人 homes家園,
76
343239
6683
06:01
just to remind提醒 them.
77
349922
2356
06:06
One of the leader's領導者 wives妻子 told me,
78
354248
4697
06:10
"Sorry, he is having some headache頭痛,
perhaps也許 he cannot不能 come."
79
358945
5015
06:15
I went to another另一個 leader領導
80
363960
2077
06:18
and his wife妻子 told me,
"Okay, you go, he will definitely無疑 join加入."
81
366037
4060
06:23
So I thought that the dinner
will take place地點,
82
371357
4112
06:27
though雖然 not at that large a scale規模.
83
375469
4483
06:33
I went back to the venue會場, which哪一個 was
a newly built內置 Mahatma聖雄 Gandhi甘地 Park公園.
84
381352
5967
06:40
It was 10 o'clock.
85
388559
1494
06:43
None沒有 of the leaders領導者 showed顯示 up.
86
391483
3339
06:48
That made製作 me angry憤怒.
87
396132
2703
06:52
I was standing常設, leaning against反對
07:01
I was emotionally感情上 drained倒掉,
rather exhausted.
89
409839
4471
07:08
Then I satSAT down where
the food餐飲 was lying說謊.
90
416890
5485
07:17
I kept不停 my emotions情緒 on hold保持.
91
425695
2090
07:19
But then, when I took the first bite,
92
427785
4494
07:24
I broke打破 down in tears眼淚.
93
432279
2931
07:27
And suddenly突然 I felt a hand on my shoulder.
94
435210
4939
07:32
And it was the healing復原, motherly母愛 touch觸摸
of an untouchable碰不得 woman女人.
95
440149
5898
07:38
And she told me,
"Kailash凱拉什, why are you crying哭了?
96
446047
4231
07:43
You have doneDONE your bit.
97
451598
2413
07:46
You have eaten吃過 the food餐飲
cooked by untouchables惹不起,
98
454011
3125
07:49
which哪一個 has never happened發生 in our memory記憶."
99
457136
2991
07:53
She said, "You won韓元 today今天."
100
461207
4582
07:57
And my friends朋友, she was right.
101
465789
4970
08:04
I came來了 back home, a little after midnight午夜,
102
472059
3730
08:07
shocked吃驚 to see that several一些
08:12
were sitting坐在 in my courtyard庭院.
104
480363
2154
08:14
I saw my mother母親 and
elderly老年 women婦女 were crying哭了
105
482517
3096
08:17
and they were pleading懇求
to these elderly老年 people
106
485613
4458
08:22
because they had threatened受威脅
to outcasteoutcaste my whole整個 family家庭.
107
490071
2934
08:26
And you know, outcastingoutcasting the family家庭
is the biggest最大 social社會 punishment懲罰
108
494345
5132
08:31
one can think of.
109
499477
2554
08:35
Somehow不知何故 they agreed約定 to punish懲治 only me,
and the punishment懲罰 was purification純化.
110
503981
4840
08:40
That means手段 I had to go 600 miles英里
away from my hometown家鄉
111
508821
4515
08:45
to the River Ganges恒河 to take a holy dip.
112
513336
3931
08:49
And after that, I should organize組織 a feast盛宴
for priests牧師, 101 priests牧師,
113
517267
4424
08:53
wash their feet and drink that water.
114
521691
3548
08:58
It was total nonsense
115
526529
2999
09:01
and I refused拒絕 to accept接受 that punishment懲罰.
116
529528
2889
09:05
How did they punish懲治 me?
117
533267
2130
09:07
I was barred禁止 from entering進入 into my own擁有
kitchen廚房 and my own擁有 dining用餐 room房間,
118
535397
5797
09:13
my utensils餐具 were separated分離.
119
541194
3052
09:16
But the night when I was angry
they wanted to outcasteoutcaste me.
120
544246
5054
09:22
But I decided決定 to outcasteoutcaste
the entire整個 caste種姓 system系統.
121
550600
4033
09:27
(Applause
122
555503
4725
09:32
And that was possible可能 because
the beginning開始 would have been
123
560988
5015
09:38
to change更改 the family家庭 name名稱, or surname,
124
566003
2116
09:40
because in India印度, most of the
family家庭 names are caste種姓 names.
125
568119
3665
09:43
So I decided決定 to drop下降 my name名稱.
126
571784
2522
09:46
And then, later後來 on, I gave
a new name名稱 to myself: SatyarthiSatyarthi,
127
574306
6504
09:52
that means手段, "seeker導引頭 of truth真相."

I was an engineer工程師, an electrical電動 engineer工程師.

10:24
And then I learned學到了 how the energy能源

10:50
I also learned學到了 how the most

142
638963
4532
10:55
could be harnessed駕馭 for good

143
643495
4475

11:04
So I'll come back to the story故事 of
when I was caught抓住 in the prison監獄:
144
652925
6767
11:11
I was very happy快樂 freeing自由化

11:18
I cannot不能 explain說明 my joy喜悅

11:31
I saw that dozens許多 of children孩子

150

11:34
they were being存在 trafficked販賣 by someone有人.
151

11:37
I stopped停止 them, those people.
152
685562

11:40
I complained抱怨 to the police警察.
153

2102
11:42
So the policemen警察, instead代替 of helping幫助 me,
154
690517
4554
11:47
they threw me in this small,
tiny shell貝殼, like an animal動物.
155
695071
5702
11:53
And that was the night of anger

11:55
when one of the brightest

11:59
I thought that if I keep on freeing
children孩子, and 50 more will join加入,
158
707632
5468
12:05
that's not doneDONE.
159

My anger憤怒 at the age年齡 of 27,

13:58
to free自由 that girl女孩 who was about

186

14:04
has given特定 me an idea理念

14:09
to go for a new strategy戰略

14:37
I knew知道 that we needed需要 global全球 policies政策.
194
865692

14:39
We organized有組織的 the worldwide全世界 marches遊行
14:43
and that has also resulted導致 in
a new international國際 convention慣例
196
871011
6062
14:49
to protect保護 the children孩子
who are in the worst最差 forms形式.
197
877073
4099
14:54
And the concrete具體 result結果 was that
the number of child兒童 laborers勞動者 globally全球
198
882262
4089
14:58
has gone走了 down by one third第三

15:03
(Applause
200
891891
4420
15:08
So, in each case案件,
201
896311
3410
15:11
it began開始 from anger憤怒,
202
899721
3789
15:15
turned轉身 into an idea理念,
203
903510
2649
15:18
and action行動.
204
906159
3406
15:21
So anger憤怒, what next下一個?
205
909565
2876
15:24
Idea理念, and --
206
912441
2479
想法。
15:26
Which哪一個 I tried試著 to do.
208
916278
4557
15:34
Anger憤怒 is a power功率, anger憤怒 is an energy能源,
209
922254
2497
15:36
and the law of nature性質 is that energy能源
210
924751
2801
15:39
can never be created創建 and never
be vanished消失, can never be destroyed銷毀.
211
927552
5243
15:44
So why can't the energy能源 of anger憤怒
be translated翻譯 and harnessed駕馭
212
932795
6890
15:51
to create創建 a better and beautiful美麗 world世界,
a more just and equitable公平 world世界?
213
939685
4536
15:56
Anger憤怒 is within each one of you,
214
944861
2480
15:59
and I will share分享 a secret秘密
for a few少數 seconds:
215
947341
5900
16:05
that if we are confined受限 in
the narrow狹窄 shells砲彈 of egos自我,
216
953241
7554
16:12
and the circles of selfishness自私,
217
960795
4430
16:17
then the anger憤怒 will turn out to be
16:25
But if we are able能夠 to break打破 the circles,
219
973539
3056
16:28
then the same相同 anger憤怒 could turn
into a great power功率.
220
976595
5886
16:34
We can break打破 the circles
by using運用 our inherent固有 compassion同情
221
982481
4347
16:38
and connect with the world世界 through通過
compassion同情 to make this world世界 better.
222
986828
3850
16:42
That same相同 anger憤怒 could be
transformed改造 into it.
223
990678
3673
16:46
So dear friends朋友, sisters姐妹 and brothers兄弟,
