ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Anand Varma - Photographer
Anand Varma's photos tell the story behind the science on everything from primate behavior and hummingbird biomechanics to amphibian disease and forest ecology.

Why you should listen

Anand Varma is a freelance photographer and videographer who started photographing natural history subjects while studying biology at the University of California, Berkeley. He spent several years assisting David Liittschwager before receiving a National Geographic Young Explorer grant to document the wetlands of Patagonia.

Varma has since become a regular contributor to National Geographic. His first feature story, called “Mindsuckers,” was published on the November 2014 cover of the magazine. This incredible look at parasites won Varma the World Press Photo's first prize in the nature category in 2015.

These bees are in my backyard
in Berkeley, California.
1
14325
4497
Essas abelhas estão no meu quintal,
em Berkeley, Califórnia.
00:30
Until last year,
I'd never kept bees before,
2
18822
2399
Até o ano passado, eu jamais tinha
cuidado de abelhas antes,
00:33
but National Geographic asked me
to photograph a story about them,
3
21221
4049
mas a National Geographic me pediu
para fotografar uma história sobre elas
00:37
and I decided, to be able
to take compelling images,
4
25270
2499
e decidi que, para conseguir boas imagens,
00:39
I should start keeping bees myself.
5
27769
2484
eu mesmo deveria começar a criar abelhas.
E, como talvez vocês saibam,
00:42
And as you may know,
6
30253
1695
as abelhas polinizam um terço
das nossas plantações
00:43
bees pollinate one third
of our food crops,
7
31948
2624
00:46
and lately they've been having
a really hard time.
8
34572
3158
e têm passado
por dificuldades ultimamente.
00:49
So as a photographer, I wanted to explore
what this problem really looks like.
9
37730
4551
Como fotógrafo, eu queira explorar
como era realmente o problema.
00:54
So I'm going to show you
what I found over the last year.
10
42281
3185
Então, vou mostrar a vocês
o que descobri ao longo do ano passado.
Esta criaturinha peluda
00:58
This furry little creature
11
46276
1624
00:59
is a fresh young bee halfway emerged
from its brood cell,
12
47900
4343
é uma abelha bem novinha,
ainda tentando sair de seu casulo,
e as abelhas atualmente
têm de lidar com diversos problemas,
01:04
and bees right now are dealing
with several different problems,
13
52243
3040
01:07
including pesticides, diseases,
and habitat loss,
14
55283
4252
incluindo pesticidas,
doenças e perda de habitat,
01:11
but the single greatest threat
is a parasitic mite from Asia,
15
59535
4611
mas a maior ameaça de todas
é o Varroa destructor,
01:16
Varroa destructor.
16
64146
2329
ácaro parasita oriundo da Ásia.
Com o tamanho de uma cabeça
de alfinete, ele sobe nas jovens abelhas
01:18
And this pinhead-sized mite
crawls onto young bees
17
66475
2879
01:21
and sucks their blood.
18
69354
2345
e suga seu sangue.
01:23
This eventually destroys a hive
19
71699
1997
Isso acaba destruindo as colmeias
01:25
because it weakens
the immune system of the bees,
20
73696
3244
porque enfraquece
o sistema imunológico das abelhas
01:28
and it makes them more vulnerable
to stress and disease.
21
76940
3536
e as deixa mais vulneráveis
ao estresse e a doenças.
01:33
Now, bees are the most sensitive
22
81776
1997
Bem, as abelhas são mais sensíveis
01:35
when they're developing
inside their brood cells,
23
83773
2740
quando ainda estão se desenvolvendo
dentro de seu casulo,
e eu queria saber como era
realmente esse processo.
01:38
and I wanted to know
what that process really looks like,
24
86513
3111
01:41
so I teamed up
with a bee lab at U.C. Davis
25
89624
2624
Fiz uma parceria com um laboratório
de abelhas da UC Davis
01:44
and figured out how to raise bees
in front of a camera.
26
92248
3095
e pensei em uma forma de criar
abelhas diante de uma câmera.
Vou mostrar a vocês os primeiros
21 dias da vida de uma abelha,
01:47
I'm going to show you
the first 21 days of a bee's life
27
95993
2988
01:50
condensed into 60 seconds.
28
98981
2789
condensados em 60 segundos.
01:55
This is a bee egg
as it hatches into a larva,
29
103763
4804
Esta é uma larva de abelha saindo do ovo,
e essas larvas recém-nascidas
ficam nadando em seus casulos,
02:00
and those newly hatched larvae
swim around their cells
30
108567
4445
alimentando-se dessa gosma branca
que abelhas enfermeiras secretam ali.
02:05
feeding on this white goo
that nurse bees secrete for them.
31
113012
4323
02:11
Then, their head and their legs
slowly differentiate
32
119616
4543
Então, a cabeça e as patas
começam a aparecer,
02:16
as they transform into pupae.
33
124159
3350
ao se transformarem em pupa.
Aqui temos o mesmo processo de pupação,
02:21
Here's that same pupation process,
34
129833
2020
e é possível ver os ácaros
pra lá e pra cá nos casulos.
02:23
and you can actually see the mites
running around in the cells.
35
131853
3390
Então, o tecido de seu corpo se reorganiza
02:27
Then the tissue in their body reorganizes
36
135243
4267
e, lentamente, o pigmento
de seus olhos se desenvolve.
02:31
and the pigment slowly
develops in their eyes.
37
139510
4605
O último estágio do processo
é quando sua pele murcha
02:38
The last step of the process
is their skin shrivels up
38
146869
5888
02:44
and they sprout hair.
39
152757
2488
e os pelos surgem.
02:47
(Music)
40
155245
3992
(Música)
03:00
So -- (Applause)
41
168805
2854
Então... (Aplausos)
Como puderam ver, até a metade do vídeo,
03:06
As you can see halfway
through that video,
42
174703
3204
os ácaros estavam pra lá e pra cá
em cima dos filhotes.
03:09
the mites were running around
on the baby bees,
43
177907
2554
03:12
and the way that beekeepers
typically manage these mites
44
180461
3929
Os criadores de abelhas normalmente
tentam combater isso
tratando suas colmeias
com produtos químicos.
03:16
is they treat their hives with chemicals.
45
184390
3014
03:19
In the long run, that's bad news,
46
187404
2266
A longo prazo, isso é ruim.
03:21
so researchers are working
on finding alternatives
47
189670
3553
Por isso, pesquisadores têm tentado
encontrar alternativas
03:25
to control these mites.
48
193223
2164
para controlar esses ácaros.
03:28
This is one of those alternatives.
49
196195
2768
Esta é uma delas: um programa
experimental de criação
03:30
It's an experimental breeding program
at the USDA Bee Lab in Baton Rouge,
50
198963
4365
do laboratório de abelhas
da USDA, em Baton Rouge,
03:35
and this queen and her attendant bees
are part of that program.
51
203328
3717
e esta rainha e suas operárias
fazem parte desse programa.
03:39
Now, the researchers figured out
52
207735
3695
Os pesquisadores descobriram
que algumas abelhas têm a capacidade
natural de combater ácaros,
03:43
that some of the bees have
a natural ability to fight mites,
53
211430
3722
03:47
so they set out to breed
a line of mite-resistant bees.
54
215152
4170
e começaram a criar uma linha
de abelhas resistentes a ácaros.
É assim que criamos abelhas
em laboratório.
03:52
This is what it takes
to breed bees in a lab.
55
220782
2636
A rainha virgem é sedada
03:55
The virgin queen is sedated
56
223418
2740
03:58
and then artificially inseminated
using this precision instrument.
57
226158
5042
e inseminada artificialmente
com um instrumento de precisão.
04:03
Now, this procedure allows the researchers
58
231200
2278
Esse procedimento
permite que os pesquisadores
controlem exatamente quais abelhas
estão sendo cruzadas,
04:05
to control exactly
which bees are being crossed,
59
233478
5022
mas há perdas e ganhos
por se ter tanto controle.
04:10
but there's a tradeoff
in having this much control.
60
238500
3127
Eles conseguiram criar
abelhas resistentes a ácaros,
04:13
They succeeded in breeding
mite-resistant bees,
61
241627
3205
mas, durante o processo,
essas abelhas começaram a perder traços,
04:16
but in that process, those bees
started to lose traits
62
244832
3088
04:19
like their gentleness
and their ability to store honey,
63
247920
3765
como sua docilidade
e capacidade de armazenar mel.
04:23
so to overcome that problem,
64
251685
2509
Para contornar esse problema,
esses pesquisadores agora trabalham
com criadores comerciais de abelhas.
04:26
these researchers are now collaborating
with commercial beekeepers.
65
254194
3548
Este é Bret Adee,
abrindo uma de suas 72 mil colmeias.
04:30
This is Bret Adee opening
one of his 72,000 beehives.
66
258252
4868
Ele e seu irmão dirigem a maior
operação de cria de abelhas do mundo
04:35
He and his brother run the largest
beekeeping operation in the world,
67
263120
4630
e a USDA está integrando as abelhas
resistentes a ácaros na operação dele,
04:39
and the USDA is integrating their
mite-resistant bees into his operation
68
267750
5659
com a esperança de que, com o tempo,
conseguirão selecionar as abelhas
04:45
with the hope that over time,
69
273409
1643
04:47
they'll be able to select the bees
that are not only mite-resistant
70
275052
3671
que são não apenas resistentes a ácaros,
mas também mantêm todas as qualidades
que as tornam úteis para nós.
04:50
but also retain all of these qualities
that make them useful to us.
71
278723
4984
04:56
And to say it like that
72
284165
1695
E dizer isso dessa forma
parece que estamos manipulando
e explorando as abelhas
04:57
makes it sound like we're manipulating
and exploiting bees,
73
285860
3297
05:01
and the truth is, we've been doing that
for thousands of years.
74
289157
3436
e a verdade é que fazemos isso
há milhares de anos.
05:04
We took this wild creature
and put it inside of a box,
75
292593
5154
Pegamos essa criatura selvagem
e a pusemos em uma caixa.
05:09
practically domesticating it,
76
297747
2114
Praticamente a domesticamos.
05:11
and originally that was
so that we could harvest their honey,
77
299861
4109
Originalmente foi assim
para que pudéssemos coletar mel,
mas, com o tempo, começamos a perder
nossos polinizadores nativos,
05:15
but over time we started losing
our native pollinators,
78
303970
2755
nossos polinizadores selvagens,
05:18
our wild pollinators,
79
306725
1695
e há muitos lugares hoje
onde esses polinizadores selvagens
05:20
and there are many places now
where those wild pollinators
80
308420
3065
não conseguem mais atender à demanda
de polinização de nossa agricultura.
05:23
can no longer meet the pollination
demands of our agriculture,
81
311485
3799
05:27
so these managed bees have become
an integral part of our food system.
82
315284
5224
Essas abelhas manipuladas se tornaram
parte do nosso sistema alimentar.
Quando as pessoas falam
em salvar abelhas,
05:32
So when people talk about saving bees,
83
320508
2719
05:35
my interpretation of that
84
323227
2133
minha interpretação disso
é que precisamos salvar
nossa relação com as abelhas
05:37
is we need to save
our relationship to bees,
85
325360
3228
e, para criar novas soluções,
05:40
and in order to design new solutions,
86
328588
5004
temos que entender
a biologia básica das abelhas
05:45
we have to understand
the basic biology of bees
87
333592
5101
e entender os efeitos de estressores
que às vezes não podemos ver.
05:50
and understand the effects
of stressors that we sometimes cannot see.
88
338693
6243
Em outras palavras, temos que entender
as abelhas bem de perto.
05:57
In other words, we have
to understand bees up close.
