00:12
I'm speaking about compassion from an Islamic point of view,
0
0
5000
00:17
and perhaps my faith is not very well thought of
1
5000
3000
00:20
as being one that is grounded in compassion.
2
8000
4000
como sendo uma fé fundamentada na compaixão.
00:24
The truth of the matter is otherwise.
3
12000
2000
A verdade desse assunto é outra.
00:26
Our holy book, the Koran, consists of 114 chapters,
4
14000
6000
Nosso livro sagrado, o Alcorão, consiste de 114 capítulos,
00:32
and each chapter begins with what we call the basmala,
5
20000
4000
00:36
the saying of "In the name of God, the all compassionate, the all merciful,"
6
24000
6000
00:42
or, as Sir Richard Burton --
7
30000
2000
ou, como Sir Richard Burton,
00:44
not the Richard Burton who was married to Elizabeth Taylor,
8
32000
3000
00:47
but the Sir Richard Burton who lived a century before that
9
35000
3000
00:50
and who was a worldwide traveler
10
38000
2000
00:52
and translator of many works of literature --
11
40000
4000
e tradutor de muitas obras de literatura,
00:56
translates it. "In the name of God, the compassionating, the compassionate."
12
44000
7000
01:03
And in a saying of the Koran, which to Muslims is God speaking to humanity,
13
51000
7000
01:10
God says to his prophet Muhammad --
14
58000
3000
Deus diz a seu profeta Maomé,
01:13
whom we believe to be the last of a series of prophets,
15
61000
3000
01:16
beginning with Adam, including Noah, including Moses, including Abraham,
16
64000
6000
começando com Adão, incluindo Noé, incluindo Moisés, incluindo Abraão,
01:22
including Jesus Christ, and ending with Muhammad --
17
70000
4000
incluindo Jesus Cristo, e terminando com Maomé
01:26
that, "We have not sent you, O Muhammad,
18
74000
3000
01:29
except as a 'rahmah,' except as a source of compassion to humanity."
19
77000
6000
01:35
For us human beings, and certainly for us as Muslims,
20
83000
4000
01:39
whose mission, and whose purpose in following the path of the prophet
21
87000
5000
cuja missão, e cujo propósito, ao seguir o caminho do profeta,
01:44
is to make ourselves as much like the prophet.
22
92000
4000
é nos tornarmos tão semelhantes ao profeta,
01:48
And the prophet, in one of his sayings, said,
23
96000
2000
01:50
"Adorn yourselves with the attributes of God."
24
98000
5000
"Adornem a si mesmos com os atributos de Deus."
01:55
And because God Himself said that the primary attribute of his is compassion --
25
103000
6000
02:01
in fact, the Koran says that "God decreed upon himself compassion,"
26
109000
5000
02:06
or, "reigned himself in by compassion" --
27
114000
4000
ou, "atrelou a si mesmo pela compaixão."
02:10
therefore, our objective and our mission must be to be sources of compassion,
28
118000
7000
02:17
activators of compassion, actors of compassion
29
125000
4000
ativadores da compaixão, agentes da compaixão,
02:21
and speakers of compassion and doers of compassion.
30
129000
4000
e oradores da compaixão, e executores da compaixão.
02:25
That is all well and good,
31
133000
3000
Isto está tudo certo e bom,
02:28
but where do we go wrong,
32
136000
3000
mas onde é que nós erramos,
02:31
and what is the source of the lack of compassion in the world?
33
139000
5000
02:36
For the answer to this, we turn to our spiritual path.
34
144000
5000
02:41
In every religious tradition, there is the outer path and the inner path,
35
149000
7000
02:48
or the exoteric path and the esoteric path.
36
156000
5000
ou o caminho exotérico e o caminho esotérico.
02:53
The esoteric path of Islam is more popularly known as Sufism, or "tasawwuf" in Arabic.
37
161000
8000
03:01
And these doctors or these masters,
38
169000
3000
E esses doutores ou esses mestres
03:04
these spiritual masters of the Sufi tradition,
39
172000
4000
esses mestres espirituais da tradição Sufi,
03:08
refer to teachings and examples of our prophet
40
176000
4000
03:12
that teach us where the source of our problems lies.
41
180000
4000
03:16
In one of the battles that the prophet waged,
42
184000
4000
Numa das batalhas que o profeta combateu,
03:20
he told his followers, "We are returning from the lesser war
43
188000
5000
03:25
to the greater war, to the greater battle."
44
193000
4000
para a guerra maior, para a maior batalha."
03:29
And they said, "Messenger of God, we are battle-weary.
45
197000
5000
E eles disseram, "Mensageiro de Deus, estamos cansados de batalhas.
03:34
How can we go to a greater battle?"
46
202000
3000
Como podemos ir para uma batalha maior?"
03:37
He said, "That is the battle of the self, the battle of the ego."
47
205000
8000
Ele disse, "Aquela é a batalha do si-mesmo, a batalha do ego."
03:45
The sources of human problems have to do with egotism, "I."
48
213000
9000
03:54
The famous Sufi master Rumi, who is very well known to most of you,
49
222000
6000
04:00
has a story in which he talks of a man who goes to the house of a friend,
50
228000
6000
04:06
and he knocks on the door,
51
234000
3000
e bate na porta,
04:09
and a voice answers, "Who's there?"
52
237000
3000
e uma voz responde. "Quem está aí?"
04:12
"It's me," or, more grammatically correctly, "It is I,"
53
240000
5000
"Sou eu", ou dizendo de outro modo, "É eu,"
04:17
as we might say in English.
54
245000
2000
como se diria em inglês.
04:19
The voice says, "Go away."
55
247000
3000
A voz responde, "Vá embora."
04:22
After many years of training, of disciplining, of search and struggle,
56
250000
8000
04:30
he comes back.
57
258000
2000
ele retorna,
04:32
With much greater humility, he knocks again on the door.
58
260000
4000
04:36
The voice asks, "Who is there?"
59
264000
3000
A voz pergunta, "Quem está aí?"
04:39
He said, "It is you, O heartbreaker."
60
267000
4000
04:43
The door swings open, and the voice says,
61
271000
4000
A porta se abre e a voz diz,
04:47
"Come in, for there is no room in this house for two I's,"
62
275000
7000
"Entre, pois não há lugar nesta casa para dois eus,
04:54
-- two capital I's, not these eyes -- "for two egos."
63
282000
4000
dois Eus maiúsculos, para dois egos.
04:58
And Rumi's stories are metaphors for the spiritual path.
64
286000
9000
05:07
In the presence of God, there is no room for more than one "I,"
65
295000
6000
05:13
and that is the "I" of divinity.
66
301000
5000
e esse é o Eu da divindade.
05:18
In a teaching -- called a "hadith qudsi" in our tradition --
67
306000
4000
05:22
God says that, "My servant," or "My creature, my human creature,
68
310000
6000
05:28
does not approach me by anything that is dearer to me
69
316000
6000
05:34
than what I have asked them to do."
70
322000
3000
05:37
And those of you who are employers know exactly what I mean.
71
325000
4000
05:41
You want your employees to do what you ask them to do,
72
329000
4000
05:45
and if they've done that, then they can do extra.
73
333000
2000
05:47
But don't ignore what you've asked them to do.
74
335000
3000
05:50
"And," God says, "my servant continues to get nearer to me,
75
338000
6000
05:56
by doing more of what I've asked them to do" --
76
344000
3000
05:59
extra credit, we might call it --
77
347000
2000
crédito extra, podemos dizer,
06:01
"until I love him or love her.
78
349000
4000
"até que eu o ame ou a ame.
06:05
And when I love my servant," God says,
79
353000
3000
E quando eu amo meu servo," diz Deus,
06:08
"I become the eyes by which he or she sees,
80
356000
6000
06:14
the ears by which he or she listens,
81
362000
6000
06:20
the hand by which he or she grasps,
82
368000
5000
06:25
and the foot by which he or she walks,
83
373000
4000
e o pé pelo qual ele ou ela anda,
06:29
and the heart by which he or she understands."
84
377000
5000
06:34
It is this merging of our self with divinity
85
382000
5000
06:39
that is the lesson and purpose of our spiritual path and all of our faith traditions.
86
387000
8000
06:47
Muslims regard Jesus as the master of Sufism,
87
395000
6000
Muçulmanos consideram Jesus como o mestre do Sufismo,
06:53
the greatest prophet and messenger who came to emphasize the spiritual path.
88
401000
7000
07:00
When he says, "I am the spirit, and I am the way,"
89
408000
4000
Quando ele diz, "eu sou o espírito e sou o caminho,"
07:04
and when the prophet Muhammad said, "Whoever has seen me has seen God,"
90
412000
5000
07:09
it is because they became so much an instrument of God,
91
417000
5000
07:14
they became part of God's team --
92
422000
2000
eles tornaram-se parte da névoa de Deus,
07:16
so that God's will was manifest through them,
93
424000
4000
07:20
and they were not acting from their own selves and their own egos.
94
428000
4000
07:24
Compassion on earth is given, it is in us.
95
432000
7000
07:31
All we have to do is to get our egos out of the way,
96
439000
5000
E tudo que precisamos fazer é tirarmos nossos egos do caminho,
07:36
get our egotism out of the way.
97
444000
3000
tirar nosso egotismo do caminho.
07:39
I'm sure, probably all of you here, or certainly the very vast majority of you,
98
447000
8000
07:47
have had what you might call a spiritual experience,
99
455000
4000
07:51
a moment in your lives when, for a few seconds, a minute perhaps,
100
459000
7000
07:58
the boundaries of your ego dissolved.
101
466000
6000
as fronteiras de seu ego se dissolveram.
08:04
And at that minute, you felt at one with the universe --
102
472000
7000
08:11
one with that jug of water, one with every human being,
103
479000
6000
08:17
one with the Creator --
104
485000
4000
um com o criador,
08:21
and you felt you were in the presence of power, of awe,
105
489000
5000
08:26
of the deepest love, the deepest sense of compassion and mercy
106
494000
4000
08:30
that you have ever experienced in your lives.
107
498000
4000
que vocês jamais experimentaram em suas vidas.
08:34
That is a moment which is a gift of God to us --
108
502000
6000
08:40
a gift when, for a moment, he lifts that boundary
109
508000
4000
08:44
which makes us insist on "I, I, I, me, me, me,"
110
512000
6000
08:50
and instead, like the person in Rumi's story,
111
518000
4000
08:54
we say, "Oh, this is all you.
112
522000
6000
dizemos, "Oh, isto é tudo você."
09:00
This is all you. And this is all us.
113
528000
2000
Isto é tudo você. E isto é tudo nós.
09:02
And us, and I, and us are all part of you.
114
530000
6000
E nós, e eu, e nós, são todos partes de você.
09:08
O, Creator! O, the Objective! The source of our being
115
536000
6000
09:14
and the end of our journey,
116
542000
2000
e o final de nossa jornada.
09:16
you are also the breaker of our hearts.
117
544000
5000
09:21
You are the one whom we should all be towards, for whose purpose we live,
118
549000
6000
09:27
and for whose purpose we shall die,
119
555000
4000
e por cujos propósitos morreremos,
09:31
and for whose purpose we shall be resurrected again
120
559000
4000
e por cujos propósitos ressuscitaremos novamente
09:35
to account to God to what extent we have been compassionate beings."
121
563000
7000
09:42
Our message today, and our purpose today,
122
570000
4000
Nossa mensagem hoje, e nosso propósito hoje,
09:46
and those of you who are here today,
123
574000
3000
09:49
and the purpose of this charter of compassion, is to remind.
124
577000
5000
e o propósito desta missão de compaixão é recordar.
09:54
For the Koran always urges us to remember, to remind each other,
125
582000
8000
10:02
because the knowledge of truth is within every human being.
126
590000
8000
10:10
We know it all.
127
598000
3000
Nós sabemos isto tudo.
10:13
We have access to it all.
128
601000
2000
Nós temos acesso a isto tudo.
10:15
Jung may have called it "the subconscious."
129
603000
4000
Jung pode tê-lo chamado de subconsciente.
10:19
Through our subconscious, in your dreams --
130
607000
4000
Através de nosso subconsciente, nos seus sonhos,
10:23
the Koran calls our state of sleep "the lesser death,"
131
611000
8000
10:31
"the temporary death" --
132
619000
4000
a morte temporária.
10:35
in our state of sleep we have dreams, we have visions,
133

10:40
we travel even outside of our bodies, for many of us,
134
628000
6000
10:46
and we see wonderful things.
135
634000
3000
e vemos coisas maravilhosas.
10:49
We travel beyond the limitations of space as we know it,
136
637000
5000
10:54
and beyond the limitations of time as we know it.
137
642000
4000
10:58
But all this is for us to glorify the name of the creator
138
646000
10000
11:08
whose primary name is the compassionating, the compassionate.
139
656000
6000
cujo nome primário é o compadecente, o compadecido.
11:14
God, Bokh, whatever name you want to call him with, Allah, Ram, Om,
140
662000
7000
Deus, Bokh, qualquer nome pelo qual vocês prefiram chamá-lo, Allah, Ram, Om,
11:21
whatever the name might be through which you name
141
669000
3000
11:24
or access the presence of divinity,
142
672000
4000
ou acessem a presença da divindade,
11:28
it is the locus of absolute being,
143
676000
6000
é o lugar do ser absoluto,
11:34
absolute love and mercy and compassion,
144
682000
4000
amor absoluto, e misericórdia e compaixão,
11:38
and absolute knowledge and wisdom,
145
686000
3000
e absoluto conhecimento e sabedoria,
11:41
what Hindus call "satchidananda."
146
689000
3000
que os Hindus chamam satchidananda.
11:44
The language differs,
147
692000
3000
A linguagem difere,
11:47
but the objective is the same.
148
695000
4000
mas o objetivo é o mesmo.
11:51
Rumi has another story
149
699000
2000
Rumi tem outra história
11:53
about three men, a Turk, an Arab and --
150
701000
3000
sobre três, um Turco, um Árabe,
11:56
and I forget the third person, but for my sake, it could be a Malay.
151
704000
4000
12:00
One is asking for angur -- one is, say, an Englishman --
152
708000
3000
12:03
one is asking for eneb, and one is asking for grapes.
153
711000
5000
12:08
And they have a fight and an argument because
154
716000
3000
E eles têm uma luta e uma discussão porque,
12:11
-- "I want grapes." "I want eneb. "I want angur." --
155
719000
4000
Eu quero 'grapes', eu quero 'eneb', eu quero 'angour',
12:15
not knowing that the word that they're using
156
723000
3000
12:18
refers to the same reality in different languages.
157
726000
3000
12:21
There's only one absolute reality by definition,
158
729000
6000
Existe apenas uma realidade absoluta por definição,
12:27
one absolute being by definition,
159
735000
3000
um ser absoluto por definição,
12:30
because absolute is, by definition, single,
160
738000
3000
porque o absoluto é, por definição, único,
12:33
and absolute and singular.
161
741000
3000
e absoluto e singular.
12:36
There's this absolute concentration of being,
162
744000
3000
Eis essa absoluta concentração do ser,
12:39
the absolute concentration of consciousness,
163
747000
3000
a absoluta concentração da consciência,
12:42
awareness, an absolute locus of compassion and love
164
750000
10000
12:52
that defines the primary attributes of divinity.
165
760000
4000
que define os atributos primários da divindade.
12:56
And these should also be
166
764000
3000
E que deveriam ser também
12:59
the primary attributes of what it means to be human.
167
767000
5000
13:04
For what defines humanity, perhaps biologically,
168
772000
6000
Pois o que define humanidade, talvez biologicamente,
13:10
is our physiology,
169
778000
3000
é nossa psicologia,
13:13
but God defines humanity by our spirituality, by our nature.
170
781000
8000
13:21
And the Koran says, He speaks to the angels and says,
171
789000
4000
13:25
"When I have finished the formation of Adam from clay,
172
793000
4000
"Quando eu tiver acabado de moldar Adão da argila,
13:29
and breathed into him of my spirit,
173
797000
4000
e tiver soprado dentro dele meu espírito,
13:33
then, fall in prostration to him."
174
801000
4000
então caiam prostrados diante dele."
13:37
The angels prostrate, not before the human body,
175
805000
8000
13:45
but before the human soul.
176
813000
3000
mas diante da alma humana.
13:48
Why? Because the soul, the human soul,
177
816000
4000
Porque? Porque a alma, a alma humana,
13:52
embodies a piece of the divine breath,
178
820000
6000
encarna uma parte do sopro divino,
13:58
a piece of the divine soul.
179
826000
3000
uma parte da alma divina.
14:01
This is also expressed in biblical vocabulary
180
829000
5000
Isto também é expresso no vocabulário bíblico
14:06
when we are taught that we were created in the divine image.
181
834000
6000
14:12
What is the imagery of God?
182
840000
2000
Que é a imagem de Deus?
14:14
The imagery of God is absolute being,
183
842000
4000
14:18
absolute awareness and knowledge and wisdom
184
846000
3000
absoluta consciência e conhecimento e sabedoria
14:21
and absolute compassion and love.
185
849000
3000
e absoluta compaixão e amor.
14:24
And therefore, for us to be human --
186
852000
4000
E desse modo, para sermos humanos,
14:28
in the greatest sense of what it means to be human,
187
856000
4000
14:32
in the most joyful sense of what it means to be human --
188
860000
3000
14:35
means that we too have to be proper stewards
189
863000
6000
14:41
of the breath of divinity within us,
190
869000
4000
do sopro da divindade dentro de nós,
14:45
and seek to perfect within ourselves the attribute of being,
191
873000
5000
14:50
of being alive, of beingness;
192
878000
3000
de ser vivo, de ser,
14:53
the attribute of wisdom, of consciousness, of awareness;
193
881000
5000
o atributo da sabedoria, da consciência, da atenção,
14:58
and the attribute of being compassionate and loving beings.
194
886000
5000
e o atributo de seres de compaixão e amor.
15:03
This is what I understand from my faith tradition,
195
891000
6000
15:09
and this is what I understand from my studies of other faith traditions,
196
897000
7000
15:16
and this is the common platform on which we must all stand,
197
904000
6000
15:22
and when we stand on this platform as such,
198
910000
3000
e quando permanecemos nessa plataforma desse modo,
15:25
I am convinced that we can make a wonderful world.
199
913000
6000
15:31
And I believe, personally, that we're on the verge
200
919000
6000
E creio, pessoalmente, que estamos no limiar,
15:37
and that, with the presence and help of people like you here,
201
925000
4000
15:41
we can bring about the prophecy of Isaiah.
202
929000
6000
podemos trazer à realidade a profecia de Isaías.
15:47
For he foretold of a period
203
935000
4000
Pois ele previu um período
15:51
when people shall transform their swords into plowshares
204
939000
7000
15:58
and will not learn war or make war anymore.
205
946000
6000
16:04
We have reached a stage in human history that we have no option:
206
952000
6000
16:10
we must, we must lower our egos,
207
958000
9000
Precisamos, precisamos apear nossos egos,
16:19
control our egos -- whether it is individual ego, personal ego,
208
967000
5000
controlar nossos egos, seja o ego individual, o ego pessoal,
16:24
family ego, national ego --
209
972000
6000
o ego familiar, o ego nacional,
16:30
and let all be for the glorification of the one.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Feisal Abdul Rauf - Chairman of the Cordoba Initiative
Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has devoted himself to healing relations between Muslim-Americans and their neighbors, and bringing that message of peace to the wider Muslim world.

Why you should listen

In 2003, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf founded the Cordoba Initiative, a non-partisan and international organization that works to provide innovative solutions to conflict between Muslim and Western communities. Also, Imam Rauf regularly attends the Council on Foreign Relations and the World Economic Forum (both Davos and Dead Sea) and has written three books on the topic of bringing peace to Islam's relationsIslam: A Search for MeaningIslam: A Sacred Law; and What's Right With Islam: A New Vision for Muslims and the West. He continues to balance his mission of creating peace with his regular duties as Imam of Masjid al-Farah, a mosque twelve blocks from Ground Zero in New York City, that he has led for 25 years.
