Why you should listen

Activist, anthropologist, author, caregiver, ecologist, LSD researcher, teacher, and Zen Buddhism priest -- Joan Halifax is many things to many people. Yet they all seem to agree that no matter what role she plays, Halifax is consistently courageous and compassionate. Halifax runs the Upaya Zen Center in New Mexico, a Zen Peacemaker community she opened in 1990 after founding and leading the Ojai Foundation in California for ten years. Her practice focuses on socially engaged Buddhism, which aims to alleviate suffering through meditation, interfaith cooperation, and social service.

As director of the Project on Being With Dying, Halifax has helped caregivers cope with death and dying for more than three decades. Her book Being With Dying helps clergy, community activists, medical professionals, social workers and spiritual seekers remove fear from the end of life. Halifax is a distinguished invited scholar of the U.S. Library of Congress and the only woman and Buddhist on the Tony Blair Foundation’s Advisory Council.

00:15
I want to address the issue of compassion.
0
0
3000
Dua të flas për problemin e dhembshurisë.
00:18
Compassion has many faces.
1
3000
3000
Dhembshuria ka shumë fytyra.
00:21
Some of them are fierce; some of them are wrathful;
2
6000
3000
Disa janë të ashpra; disa janë të xhindosura;
00:24
some of them are tender; some of them are wise.
3
9000
3000
disa janë të buta; disa janë të urta.
00:27
A line that the Dalai Lama once said,
4
12000
3000
Njëherë Dalai Lama ka thënë,
00:30
he said, "Love and compassion are necessities.
5
15000
3000
"Dashuria dhe dhembshuria janë domosdoshmëri.
00:33
They are not luxuries.
6
18000
3000
Nuk janë luks.
00:36
Without them,
7
21000
2000
Pa to,
00:38
humanity cannot survive."
8
23000
2000
njerëzimi nuk mund të mbijetojë."
00:40
And I would suggest,
9
25000
2000
Dhe unë do të sugjeroja,
00:42
it is not only humanity that won't survive,
10
27000
3000
nuk mund të mbijetojë vetëm njerëzimi,
00:45
but it is all species on the planet,
11
30000
2000
por të gjitha speciet e planetit,
00:47
as we've heard today.
12
32000
2000
siç kemi dëgjuar sot.
00:49
It is the big cats,
13
34000
2000
Janë macet e mëdha,
00:51
and it's the plankton.
14
36000
3000
dhe është dhe planktoni.
00:54
Two weeks ago, I was in Bangalore in India.
15
39000
3000
Para dy javësh isha në Bangalor të Indisë.
00:57
I was so privileged
16
42000
2000
Isha kaq e privilegjuar
00:59
to be able to teach in a hospice
17
44000
3000
që mund të jepja mësim në një azil
01:02
on the outskirts of Bangalore.
18
47000
2000
në periferitë e Bangalorit.
01:04
And early in the morning,
19
49000
2000
Dhe herët në mëngjes,
01:06
I went into the ward.
20
51000
2000
shkova në pavijon.
01:08
In that hospice,
21
53000
2000
Në atë azil,
01:10
there were 31 men and women
22
55000
2000
ishin 31 gra e burra,
01:12
who were actively dying.
23
57000
2000
të cilët ishin duke vdekur.
01:14
And I walked up to the bedside
24
59000
2000
Kalova anash krevatit
01:16
of an old woman
25
61000
2000
të një plake
01:18
who was breathing very rapidly, fragile,
26
63000
3000
që merrte frymë shumë shpejtë, e brishtë,
01:21
obviously in the latter phase
27
66000
2000
siç dukej në një fazë të mëvonshme
01:23
of active dying.
28
68000
3000
të vdekjes aktive.
01:26
I looked into her face.
29
71000
2000
E pashë në fytyrë.
01:28
I looked into the face
30
73000
2000
Pashë në fytyrën
01:30
of her son sitting next to her,
31
75000
2000
e të birit që i ishte ulur pranë,
01:32
and his face was just riven
32
77000
2000
dhe fytyra i ishte copëtuar
01:34
with grief and confusion.
33
79000
3000
nga pikëllimi dhe çoroditja.
01:37
And I remembered
34
82000
3000
Dhe m'u kujtua
01:40
a line from the Mahabharata,
35
85000
3000
një frazë e Mahabharata,
01:43
the great Indian epic:
36
88000
3000
poeti epik i famshëm indian:
01:46
"What is the most wondrous thing in the world, Yudhisthira?"
37
91000
5000
"Cila është gjëja më e mahnitshme në botë, Yudhisthira?
01:51
And Yudhisthira replied,
38
96000
2000
Dhe Yudhisthira u përgjigj,
01:53
"The most wondrous thing in the world
39
98000
3000
"Gjëja më e mrekullueshme në botë
01:56
is that all around us
40
101000
3000
është se përreth nesh
01:59
people can be dying
41
104000
2000
njerëzit mund të jenë duke vdekur
02:01
and we don't realize
42
106000
2000
dhe ne nuk e kuptojmë
02:03
it can happen to us."
43
108000
3000
që mund të na ndodhë edhe ne."
02:13
I looked up.
44
118000
3000
Ngrita sytë.
02:17
Tending those 31 dying people
45
122000
3000
Për ato 31 njerëz që po vdisnin
02:20
were young women
46
125000
2000
kujdeseshin vajza të reja
02:22
from villages around Bangalore.
47
127000
2000
nga fshatrat rreth Bangalorit.
02:24
I looked into the face of one of these women,
48
129000
3000
Vështrova në fytyrën e njërës prej vajzave,
02:27
and I saw in her face
49
132000
3000
dhe pashë aty
02:30
the strength that arises
50
135000
2000
forcën që dilte
02:32
when natural compassion is really present.
51
137000
3000
kur dhembshuria natyrale është vërtetë e pranishme.
02:35
I watched her hands
52
140000
2000
Pashë duart e saj
02:37
as she bathed an old man.
53
142000
4000
ndërsa lante një plak.
02:41
My gaze went to another young woman
54
146000
4000
Vështrimi im shkoi te një vajzë tjetër
02:45
as she wiped the face
55
150000
3000
që pastronte fytyrën
02:48
of another dying person.
56
153000
2000
e një njeriu tjetër që po vdiste.
02:50
And it reminded me
57
155000
2000
Dhe kjo më kujtoi
02:52
of something that I had just been present for.
58
157000
2000
arsyen pse isha e pranishme aty.
02:54
Every year or so,
59
159000
2000
Çdo vit,
02:56
I have the privilege of taking clinicians
60
161000
2000
kam privilegjin të marr klinicistë
02:58
into the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.
61
163000
3000
në Himalaje dhe në Rrafshnaltën Tibetiane.
03:01
And we run clinics
62
166000
2000
Dhe ne ngremë klinika
03:03
in these very remote regions
63
168000
2000
në këto rajone shumë të largëta
03:05
where there's no medical care whatsoever.
64
170000
3000
ku nuk ka asnjë kujdes mjekësor.
03:08
And on the first day at Simikot in Humla,
65
173000
4000
Dhe në ditën e parë në Simikot të Humlës,
03:12
far west of Nepal,
66
177000
2000
perëndimi i largët i Nepalit,
03:14
the most impoverished region of Nepal,
67
179000
3000
rajoni më i mjerë i Nepalit,
03:17
an old man came in
68
182000
2000
hyri një plak
03:19
clutching a bundle of rags.
69
184000
3000
duke shtrënguar një deng me rrecka.
03:22
And he walked in, and somebody said something to him,
70
187000
3000
Dhe ai hyri, dikush i tha diçka,
03:25
we realized he was deaf,
71
190000
2000
ne e kuptuam që ishte i shurdhër,
03:27
and we looked into the rags,
72
192000
2000
hodhëm një vështrim mbi rrecka,
03:29
and there was this pair of eyes.
73
194000
3000
dhe aty pamë një palë sy.
03:32
The rags were unwrapped
74
197000
2000
Rreckat ishin çmbështjellur
03:34
from a little girl
75
199000
2000
nga një vajzë e vogël
03:36
whose body was massively burned.
76
201000
3000
trupi i së cilës ishte djegur masivisht.
03:41
Again,
77
206000
2000
Prapë,
03:43
the eyes and hands
78
208000
2000
sytë e duart
03:45
of Avalokiteshvara.
79
210000
2000
e Avalokiteshvara.
03:47
It was the young women, the health aids,
80
212000
3000
Ishte vajza e re, ndihmësja,
03:50
who cleaned the wounds of this baby
81
215000
3000
që pastroi plagët e kësaj bebeje
03:53
and dressed the wounds.
82
218000
2000
dhe mbështolli plagët.
03:55
I know those hands and eyes;
83
220000
2000
I njoh këta duar e sy;
03:57
they touched me as well.
84
222000
2000
më kanë prekur edhe mua.
03:59
They touched me at that time.
85
224000
2000
Më kanë prekur mua atëherë.
04:01
They have touched me throughout my 68 years.
86
226000
3000
Më kanë prekur mes 68 viteve të mia.
04:04
They touched me when I was four
87
229000
2000
Më kanë prekur kur kam qenë katër vjeç
04:06
and I lost my eyesight
88
231000
2000
dhe humba shikimin
04:08
and was partially paralyzed.
89
233000
2000
e isha pjesërisht e paralizuar.
04:10
And my family brought in
90
235000
2000
Dhe familja ime futi brenda
04:12
a woman whose mother had been a slave
91
237000
2000
një grua, e ëma e së cilës bëhej skllave
04:14
to take care of me.
92
239000
3000
për t'u kujdesur për mua.
04:17
And that woman
93
242000
2000
Dhe ajo grua,
04:19
did not have sentimental compassion.
94
244000
2000
nuk kishte dhembshuri sentimentale.
04:21
She had phenomenal strength.
95
246000
3000
Kishte forcë fenomenale.
04:24
And it was really her strength, I believe,
96
249000
2000
Dhe ishte vërtetë forca e saj, besoj,
04:26
that became the kind of mudra and imprimatur
97
251000
3000
që u kthye në një lloj gjesti e miratimi
04:29
that has been a guiding light in my life.
98
254000
3000
që ka qenë një dritë udhëzuese në jetën time.
04:33
So we can ask:
99
258000
3000
Pra ne mund të pyesim:
04:36
What is compassion comprised of?
100
261000
4000
Nga çfarë përbëhet dhembshuria?
04:40
And there are various facets.
101
265000
2000
Dhe ka aspekte të ndryshme.
04:42
And there's referential and non-referential compassion.
102
267000
3000
Dhe ka dhembshuri referenciale dhe jo referenciale.
04:45
But first, compassion is comprised
103
270000
2000
Por së pari, dhembshuria përbëhet
04:47
of that capacity
104
272000
2000
nga ai kapacitet
04:49
to see clearly
105
274000
2000
për të parë qartë
04:51
into the nature of suffering.
106
276000
2000
në natyrën e vuajtjes.
04:53
It is that ability
107
278000
2000
Është ajo aftësi
04:55
to really stand strong
108
280000
2000
për të duruar fort
04:57
and to recognize also
109
282000
2000
dhe për të njohur gjithashtu
04:59
that I'm not separate from this suffering.
110
284000
2000
se nuk jam e ndarë nga kjo vuajtje.
05:01
But that is not enough,
111
286000
2000
Por kjo nuk mjafton,
05:03
because compassion,
112
288000
2000
sepse dhembshuria,
05:05
which activates the motor cortex,
113
290000
2000
që aktivizon lëvizjen motorike,
05:07
means that we aspire,
114
292000
3000
do të thotë se dëshirojmë,
05:10
we actually aspire to transform suffering.
115
295000
3000
vërtetë dëshirojmë të transformojmë vuajtjen.
05:13
And if we're so blessed,
116
298000
2000
Dhe nëse jemi kaq të bekuar,
05:15
we engage in activities
117
300000
2000
ne angazhohemi me aktivitete
05:17
that transform suffering.
118
302000
2000
që transformojnë vuajtjen.
05:19
But compassion has another component,
119
304000
2000
Por dhembshuria ka një përbërës tjetër,
05:21
and that component is really essential.
120
306000
3000
i cili është shumë themelor.
05:24
That component
121
309000
2000
Ai përbërës
05:26
is that we cannot be attached to outcome.
122
311000
3000
është se ne nuk mund të ngjitemi pas rezultatit.
05:29
Now I worked with dying people
123
314000
3000
Kam punuar me njerëz që po vdisnin
05:32
for over 40 years.
124
317000
3000
për më shumë se 40 vjet.
05:35
I had the privilege of working on death row
125
320000
3000
Kisha privilegjin për të punuar në rradhët e vdekjes
05:38
in a maximum security [prison] for six years.
126
323000
3000
me një siguri maksimale (burg) për gjashtë vjet.
05:41
And I realized so clearly
127
326000
2000
Dhe qartësisht e kam kuptuar
05:43
in bringing my own life experience,
128
328000
2000
përmes eksperiencave jetësore të mia,
05:45
from working with dying people
129
330000
2000
nga të punuarit me njerëz të mjerë
05:47
and training caregivers,
130
332000
3000
dhe duke trajnuar kujdestarë,
05:50
that any attachment to outcome
131
335000
2000
se çdo lloj ngjitje ndaj rezultatit
05:52
would distort deeply
132
337000
2000
do të shfytyronte thellësisht
05:54
my own capacity to be fully present
133
339000
3000
kapacitetin tim për të qenë plotësisht e pranishme
05:57
to the whole catastrophe.
134
342000
3000
ne të gjithë katastrofën.
06:00
And when I worked in the prison system,
135
345000
2000
Dhe kur punoja në sistemin e burgut,
06:02
it was so clear to me, this:
136
347000
3000
e kisha shumë të qartë këtë:
06:05
that many of us
137
350000
2000
se shumë nga ne
06:07
in this room,
138
352000
2000
në këtë sallë,
06:09
and almost all of the men that I worked with on death row,
139
354000
3000
dhe pothuajse të gjithë burrat me të cilët kam punuar në rradhën e vdekjes,
06:12
the seeds of their own compassion had never been watered.
140
357000
3000
farat e vetë dhembshurisë së tyre nuk janë ujitur kurrë.
06:15
That compassion is actually
141
360000
2000
Dhembshuria është në fakt
06:17
an inherent human quality.
142
362000
3000
një cilësi njerëzore e qenësishme.
06:20
It is there within every human being.
143
365000
3000
Ndodhet brenda çdo qenieje njerëzore.
06:23
But the conditions
144
368000
2000
Por kushtet
06:25
for compassion to be activated,
145
370000
4000
që dhembshuria të aktivizohet,
06:29
to be aroused,
146
374000
2000
të ngjallet,
06:31
are particular conditions.
147
376000
2000
janë kushte të veçanta.
06:33
I had that condition, to a certain extent,
148
378000
3000
E kisha atë kusht, në një masë të caktuar,
06:36
from my own childhood illness.
149
381000
2000
nga sëmundja ime e fëmijërisë.
06:38
Eve Ensler, whom you'll hear later,
150
383000
3000
Eve Ensler, të cilën do t'a dëgjoni më vonë,
06:41
has had that condition activated
151
386000
2000
e ka atë kusht të aktivizuar
06:43
amazingly in her
152
388000
3000
në mënyrë të pabesueshme tek ajo
06:46
through the various waters of suffering
153
391000
3000
nëpërmjet ujrave të shumëllojshëm të vuajtjes
06:49
that she has been through.
154
394000
3000
që ka kaluar.
06:52
And what is fascinating
155
397000
2000
Dhe ajo çfarë është e mahnitshme
06:54
is that compassion has enemies,
156
399000
3000
është se dhembshuria ka armiq,
06:57
and those enemies are things like pity,
157
402000
5000
dhe ato armiq janë të tillë si mëshira,
07:02
moral outrage,
158
407000
3000
shkelja morale,
07:05
fear.
159
410000
2000
frika.
07:07
And you know, we have a society, a world,
160
412000
3000
Dhe e dini, ne kemi një shoqëri, një botë,
07:10
that is paralyzed by fear.
161
415000
3000
që është e paralizuar nga frika.
07:13
And in that paralysis, of course,
162
418000
2000
Dhe në atë paralizë, sigurisht,
07:15
our capacity for compassion
163
420000
2000
kapaciteti ynë për dhembshuri
07:17
is also paralyzed.
164
422000
2000
është gjithashtu i paralizuar.
07:19
The very word terror
165
424000
2000
Fjala terror
07:21
is global.
166
426000
2000
është globale.
07:23
The very feeling of terror is global.
167
428000
3000
Ndjenja ekstreme e terrorit është globale.
07:26
So our work, in a certain way,
168
431000
2000
Kështu puna jonë, në një mënyrë të caktuar,
07:28
is to address this imago,
169
433000
2000
është të adresojmë këtë shëmbëlltyrë,
07:30
this kind of archetype
170
435000
2000
këtë lloj prototipi
07:32
that has pervaded the psyche
171
437000
2000
që ka depërtuar psikikën
07:34
of our entire globe.
172
439000
3000
e gjithë globit.
07:38
Now we know from neuroscience
173
443000
3000
Tani e dijmë nga shkenca nervore
07:41
that compassion has
174
446000
2000
se dhembshuria
07:43
some very extraordinary qualities.
175
448000
2000
ka disa cilësi shumë të jashtëzakonshme.
07:45
For example:
176
450000
2000
Për shembull:
07:47
A person who is cultivating compassion,
177
452000
3000
Një person që kultivon dhembshuri,
07:50
when they are in the presence of suffering,
178
455000
3000
kur janë në prezencë të vuajtjes,
07:53
they feel that suffering a lot more
179
458000
3000
ata e ndiejnë atë vuajtje më shumë
07:56
than many other people do.
180
461000
2000
se njerëzit e tjerë.
07:58
However,
181
463000
2000
Gjithsesi,
08:00
they return to baseline a lot sooner.
182
465000
3000
ata kthehen në bazë më shpejtë.
08:03
This is called resilience.
183
468000
2000
Kjo quhet elasticitet.
08:05
Many of us think that compassion drains us,
184
470000
3000
Shumë nga ne mendon se dhembshuria na than,
08:08
but I promise you
185
473000
2000
por ju premtoj
08:10
it is something that truly enlivens us.
186
475000
3000
që është diçka që na gjallëron.
08:13
Another thing about compassion
187
478000
2000
Një gjë tjetër për dhembshurinë
08:15
is that it really enhances what's called neural integration.
188
480000
3000
është se vërtetë rrit atë që quhet integrim nervor.
08:18
It hooks up all parts of the brain.
189
483000
3000
Lidh së bashku të gjitha pjesët e trurit.
08:22
Another, which has been discovered
190
487000
2000
Diçka tjetër, që është zbuluar
08:24
by various researchers
191
489000
2000
nga studiues të ndryshëm
08:26
at Emory and at Davis and so on,
192
491000
3000
te Emori dhe te Davis e të tjerë,
08:29
is that compassion enhances our immune system.
193
494000
4000
është se dhembshuria rrit sistemin tonë imunitar.
08:34
Hey,
194
499000
2000
Hej,
08:36
we live in a very noxious world.
195
501000
2000
jetojmë në një botë shumë të dëmshme.
08:38
(Laughter)
196
503000
2000
(Të qeshura)
08:40
Most of us are shrinking
197
505000
2000
Shumë nga ne po tkurren
08:42
in the face of psycho-social and physical poisons,
198
507000
3000
në sy të helmeve psiko-sociale dhe fizike,
08:45
of the toxins of our world.
199
510000
3000
nga toksinat e botës tonë.
08:48
But compassion, the generation of compassion,
200
513000
2000
Por dhembshuria, gjenerata e dhembshurisë,
08:50
actually mobilizes
201
515000
3000
në fakt vë në lëvizje
08:53
our immunity.
202
518000
3000
imunitetin tonë.
08:56
You know, if compassion is so good for us,
203
521000
3000
E dini, nëse dhembshuria është kaq e mirë për ne,
08:59
I have a question.
204
524000
2000
kam një pyetje.
09:03
Why don't we train our children
205
528000
2000
Pse nuk i mësojmë fëmijët tanë
09:05
in compassion?
206
530000
3000
me dhembshurinë?
09:08
(Applause)
207
533000
5000
(Duartrokitje)
09:13
If compassion is so good for us,
208
538000
3000
Nëse dhembshuria është kaq e mirë për ne,
09:16
why don't we train our health care providers in compassion
209
541000
4000
pse nuk i mësojmë kujdestarët tanë të shëndetit me dhembshuri
09:20
so that they can do what they're supposed to do,
210
545000
3000
që kështu të bëjnë atë që supozohet të bëjnë,
09:23
which is to really transform suffering?
211
548000
3000
që është të transformojnë vërtetë vuajtjet?
09:26
And if compassion is so good for us,
212
551000
3000
Dhe nëse dhembshuria është kaq e mirë,
09:29
why don't we vote on compassion?
213
554000
4000
pse nuk votojmë për dhembshuri?
09:33
Why don't we vote for people in our government
214
558000
4000
Pse nuk votojmë për njerëzit në qeverinë tonë
09:37
based on compassion,
215
562000
2000
bazuar në dhembshuri,
09:39
so that we can have
216
564000
2000
që të kemi
09:41
a more caring world?
217
566000
3000
një botë më dashamirëse?
09:44
In Buddhism,
218
569000
2000
Në Budizëm,
09:46
we say, "it takes a strong back and a soft front."
219
571000
3000
themi, "duhet një anë e pasme e fortë dhe një anë e përparme e butë."
09:49
It takes tremendous strength of the back
220
574000
3000
Duhet një forcë e llahtarshme nga mbrapa
09:52
to uphold yourself in the midst of conditions.
221
577000
3000
për të mbajtur veten në mes të kushteve.
09:55
And that is the mental quality of equanimity.
222
580000
3000
Dhe kjo është cilësia mendore e gjakftohtësisë.
09:58
But it also takes a soft front --
223
583000
3000
Por gjithashtu duhet një front i butë --
10:01
the capacity to really be open to the world as it is,
224
586000
3000
kapaciteti për të qenë vërtetë i hapur ndaj botës siç duhet,
10:04
to have an undefended heart.
225
589000
2000
për të pasur një zemër të pambrojtur.
10:06
And the archetype of this in Buddhism
226
591000
3000
Dhe prototipi i kësaj në Budizëm
10:09
is Avalokiteshvara, Kuan-Yin.
227
594000
2000
është Avalokiteshvara, Kuan-Yin.
10:11
It's a female archetype:
228
596000
3000
Është një prototip femëror:
10:14
she who perceives
229
599000
2000
ajo që përcepton
10:16
the cries of suffering in the world.
230
601000
4000
të qarat e vuajtjeve në botë.
10:23
She stands with 10,000 arms,
231
608000
4000
Ajo qëndron me 10,000 krahë,
10:27
and in every hand,
232
612000
2000
dhe në çdo dorë,
10:29
there is an instrument of liberation,
233
614000
3000
ka një instrument lirie,
10:32
and in the palm of every hand, there are eyes,
234
617000
3000
dhe në pëllëmbën e çdo dore, ka sy,
10:35
and these are the eyes of wisdom.
235
620000
3000
dhe këta janë sytë e mençurisë.
10:38
I say that, for thousands of years,
236
623000
3000
E them, për mijëra vjet,
10:41
women have lived,
237
626000
2000
gratë kanë jetuar,
10:43
exemplified, met in intimacy,
238
628000
4000
janë bërë shembull, kanë takuar me familjaritet,
10:47
the archetype of Avalokitesvara,
239
632000
3000
prototipin e Avalokitesvara,
10:50
of Kuan-Yin,
240
635000
2000
të Kuan-Yin,
10:52
she who perceives
241
637000
2000
ajo që përcepton
10:54
the cries of suffering in the world.
242
639000
2000
të qarat e vuajtjeve në botë.
10:57
Women have manifested for thousands of years
243
642000
3000
Gratë kanë protestuar për mijëra vjet
11:00
the strength arising from compassion
244
645000
4000
forcën që del nga dhembshuria
11:04
in an unfiltered, unmediated way
245
649000
3000
në një mënyrë të pafiltruar, të pandërmjetme
11:07
in perceiving suffering
246
652000
2000
në përceptimin e vuajtjeve
11:09
as it is.
247
654000
2000
ashtu siç duhet.
11:13
They have infused societies with kindness,
248
658000
3000
Ato kanë ngjallur shoqëritë me mirësi,
11:16
and we have really felt that
249
661000
2000
dhe ne kemi ndjerë se
11:18
as woman after woman
250
663000
2000
si grua pas gruaje
11:20
has stood on this stage
251
665000
2000
ka qëndruar në këtë etapë
11:22
in the past day and a half.
252
667000
3000
më përpara.
11:25
And they have actualized compassion
253
670000
2000
Dhe ato kanë aktualizuar dhembshurinë
11:27
through direct action.
254
672000
2000
përmes veprimeve direkte.
11:29
Jody Williams called it:
255
674000
2000
Jody Williams e ka quajtur:
11:31
It's good to meditate.
256
676000
2000
Është mirë të meditosh.
11:33
I'm sorry, you've got to do a little bit of that, Jody.
257
678000
3000
Më vjen keq, duhet të bëj pak nga kjo, Jody.
11:36
Step back, give your mother a break, okay.
258
681000
3000
Mbrapsu, lëre pak të qetë nënën tënde, mirë.
11:39
(Laughter)
259
684000
2000
(Të qeshura)
11:41
But the other side of the equation
260
686000
2000
Por ana tjetër e ekuacionit
11:43
is you've got to come out of your cave.
261
688000
2000
është se duhet të dalësh nga shpella.
11:45
You have to come into the world
262
690000
2000
Duhet të vish botë
11:47
like Asanga did,
263
692000
2000
siç bëri Asanga,
11:49
who was looking to realize Maitreya Buddha
264
694000
3000
i cili kërkonte të kuptonte Maitreya Buddha
11:52
after 12 years sitting in the cave.
265
697000
3000
12 vjet pasi kishte ndenjur në shpellë.
11:55
He said, "I'm out of here."
266
700000
2000
Tha, "Dola unë."
11:57
He's going down the path.
267
702000
2000
Ai kalon nëpër shteg.
11:59
He sees something in the path.
268
704000
2000
Ai sheh diçka në atë shteg.
12:01
He looks, it's a dog, he drops to his knees.
269
706000
3000
Sheh një qen që i rrëzohet para këmbëve.
12:04
He sees that the dog has this big wound on its leg.
270
709000
4000
Sheh se qeni kishte një plagë të madhe në këmbë.
12:08
The wound is just filled with maggots.
271
713000
3000
Plaga ishte e mbushur me larva.
12:11
He puts out his tongue
272
716000
3000
Ai nxjerr gjuhën
12:14
in order to remove the maggots,
273
719000
2000
që të pastrojë larvat,
12:16
so as not to harm them.
274
721000
3000
që as të mos iu bëjë keq.
12:19
And at that moment,
275
724000
2000
Dhe në atë moment,
12:21
the dog transformed
276
726000
2000
qeni transformohet
12:23
into the Buddha of love and kindness.
277
728000
3000
në Budën e dashurisë dhe mirësisë.
12:27
I believe
278
732000
2000
Unë besoj
12:29
that women and girls today
279
734000
2000
se gratë dhe vajzat sot
12:31
have to partner in a powerful way with men --
280
736000
4000
duhet të lidhen në një mënyrë të fuqishme me burrat --
12:35
with their fathers,
281
740000
2000
me baballarët e tyre,
12:37
with their sons, with their brothers,
282
742000
3000
me bijtë e tyre, me vëllezërit,
12:40
with the plumbers, the road builders,
283
745000
2000
me hidraulikët, ndërtuesit,
12:42
the caregivers, the doctors, the lawyers,
284
747000
3000
infermierët, doktorët, avokatët,
12:45
with our president,
285
750000
2000
me presidentin tonë,
12:47
and with all beings.
286
752000
2000
dhe me të gjitha qeniet.
12:49
The women in this room
287
754000
2000
Gratë e kësaj salle
12:51
are lotuses in a sea of fire.
288
756000
3000
janë zambakë në një det zjarri.
12:54
May we actualize that capacity
289
759000
2000
Duhet të aktualizojmë këtë kapacitet
12:56
for women everywhere.
290
761000
2000
për gratë kudo.
12:58
Thank you.
291
763000
2000
Ju falenderoj.
13:00

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Joan Halifax - Author, Zen priest
Known for her compassionate work with the terminally ill, Joan Halifax is a driving force of socially engaged Buddhism.
