ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Beau Lotto - Neuroscientist, Artist
Beau Lotto is founder of Lottolab, a hybrid art studio and science lab. With glowing, interactive sculpture -- and old-fashioned peer-reviewed research--he's illuminating the mysteries of the brain's visual system.

Why you should listen

"Let there be perception," was evolution's proclamation, and so it was that all creatures, from honeybees to humans, came to see the world not as it is, but as was most useful. This uncomfortable place--where what an organism's brain sees diverges from what is actually out there--is what Beau Lotto and his team at Lottolab are exploring through their dazzling art-sci experiments and public illusions. Their Bee Matrix installation, for example, places a live bee in a transparent enclosure where gallerygoers may watch it seek nectar in a virtual meadow of luminous Plexiglas flowers. (Bees, Lotto will tell you, see colors much like we humans do.) The data captured isn't just discarded, either: it's put to good use in probing scientific papers, and sometimes in more exhibits.

At their home in London’s Science Museum, the lab holds "synesthetic workshops" where kids and adults make abstract paintings that computers interpret into music, and they host regular Lates--evenings of science, music and "mass experiments." Lotto is passionate about involving people from all walks of life in research on perception--both as subjects and as fellow researchers. One such program, called "i,scientist," in fact led to the publication of the first ever peer-reviewed scientific paper written by schoolchildren ("Blackawton Bees," December 2010). It starts, "Once upon a time ..."

These and Lotto's other conjurings are slowly, charmingly bending the science of perception--and our perceptions of what science can be.

whichที่ is a bitบิต of a killerนักฆ่า in an 18-minute-นาที talk.
122
337000
3000
05:52
(Laughter
123
340000
1000
05:53
But I really want you to learn
124
341000
2000
05:55
And I'll tell you -- don't look anywhereทุกแห่ง elseอื่น --
125
343000
3000
05:58
and I'll tell you what's happeningสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้น insideภายใน your headหัว.

Your brainสมอง is learningการเรียนรู้. And it's learningการเรียนรู้ that the right sideด้าน of its visualภาพ fieldสนาม
127
348000
3000
06:03
is underภายใต้ redสีแดง illuminationประภาส;

the left sideด้าน of its visualภาพ fieldสนาม is underภายใต้ greenสีเขียว illuminationประภาส.
129
353000
3000
06:08
That's what it's learningการเรียนรู้. Okay?
130
356000
3000
06:11
Now, when I tell you, I want you to look at the dotจุด betweenระหว่าง the two desertทะเลทราย scenesฉาก.
131
359000
5000
06:16
So why don't you do that now?
132
364000
2000
06:18
(Laughter
133
366000

Can I have the lightsไฟ up again?
134
369000

06:23
I take it from your responseคำตอบ they don't look the sameเหมือนกัน anymoreอีกต่อไป. Right?
135
371000
4000
06:27
(Applause
136
375000
1000
06:28
Why? Because your brainสมอง is seeingเห็น that sameเหมือนกัน informationข้อมูล
137
376000
3000
06:31
as if the right one is still underภายใต้ redสีแดง lightเบา,
138
379000
2000
06:33
and the left one is still underภายใต้ greenสีเขียว lightเบา.
139
381000
2000
06:35
That's your newใหม่ normalปกติ.
140
383000
2000
06:37
So, what does this mean for context
141
385000
2000
06:39
It meansวิธี that I can take these two identicalเหมือนกัน squaresสี่เหลี่ยม,
142
387000
2000
06:41
and I can put them in lightเบา and darkมืด surroundsล้อมรอบ.
143
389000
2000
06:43
And now the one on the darkมืด surroundรอบทิศทาง looksรูปลักษณ์ lighterน้ำหนักเบา than the one on the lightเบา surroundรอบทิศทาง.
144
391000
3000
06:46
What's significantสำคัญ is not simplyง่ายดาย the lightเบา and darkมืด surroundsล้อมรอบ that matterเรื่อง.
145
394000
4000
06:50
It's what those lightเบา and darkมืด surroundsล้อมรอบ meantความหมาย for your behaviorพฤติกรรม in the pastอดีต.
146
398000
4000
06:54
So I'll showแสดง you what I mean. Here we have
147
402000
2000
06:56
that exactแน่นอน sameเหมือนกัน illusionภาพมายา.
148
404000
2000
06:58
We have two identicalเหมือนกัน tilesกระเบื้อง, on the left,
149
406000
2000
07:00
one in a darkมืด surroundรอบทิศทาง, one in a lightเบา surroundรอบทิศทาง.
150
408000
2000
07:02
And the sameเหมือนกัน thing over on the right.
151
410000
2000
07:04
Now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to reviewทบทวน those two scenesฉาก.
152
412000
3000
07:07
But I'm not going to changeเปลี่ยนแปลง anything withinภายใน those boxesกล่อง,
153
415000
2000
07:11
And see what happensที่เกิดขึ้น to your perceptionความเข้าใจ.
155
419000
2000
07:13
Noticeแจ้งให้ทราบ that on the left
156
421000
2000
07:15
the two tilesกระเบื้อง look nearlyเกือบ completelyอย่างสมบูรณ์ oppositeตรงข้าม:
157
423000
3000
07:18
one very whiteขาว and one very darkมืด.
158
426000
2000
07:20
All right? Whereasแต่ทว่า on the right,
159
428000
2000
07:22
the two tilesกระเบื้อง look nearlyเกือบ the sameเหมือนกัน.
160
430000
2000
07:24
And yetยัง there is still one on a darkมืด surroundรอบทิศทาง and one on a lightเบา surroundรอบทิศทาง.
161
432000
4000
07:28
Why? Because if the tileกระเบื้อง in that shadowเงา
162
436000
3000
07:31
were in factความจริง in shadowเงา,
163
439000
2000
07:33
and reflectingสะท้อนให้เห็นถึง the sameเหมือนกัน amountจำนวน of lightเบา to your eyeตา
164
441000
2000
07:35
as the one outsideด้านนอก the shadowเงา,
165
443000
2000
07:37
it would have to be more reflectiveอย่างไตร่ตรอง -- just the lawsกฎหมาย of physicsฟิสิกส์.
166
445000
3000
07:40
So you see it that way.
167
448000
2000
07:42
Whereasแต่ทว่า on the right, the informationข้อมูล is consistentคงเส้นคงวา
168
450000
3000
07:45
with those two tilesกระเบื้อง beingกำลัง underภายใต้ the sameเหมือนกัน lightเบา.
169
453000
2000
07:47
If they are underภายใต้ the sameเหมือนกัน lightเบา, reflectingสะท้อนให้เห็นถึง the sameเหมือนกัน amountจำนวน of lightเบา
170
455000
2000
07:49
to your eyeตา,
171
457000
2000
07:51
then they mustต้อง be equallyพอ ๆ กัน reflectiveอย่างไตร่ตรอง.
172
459000
2000
07:53
So you see it that way.
173
461000
2000
07:55
Whichที่ meansวิธี we can bringนำมาซึ่ง all this informationข้อมูล togetherด้วยกัน
174
463000
2000
07:57
to createสร้าง some incrediblyเหลือเชื่อ strongแข็งแรง illusionsภาพลวงตา.
175
465000
2000
07:59
This is one I madeทำ a fewน้อย yearsปี agoมาแล้ว.
176
467000
2000
08:01
And you'llคุณจะ noticeแจ้งให้ทราบ you see a darkมืด brownสีน้ำตาล tileกระเบื้อง at the topด้านบน,
177
469000
3000
08:04
and a brightสดใส orangeส้ม tileกระเบื้อง at the sideด้าน.
178
472000
3000
08:07
That is your perceptualการรับรู้ realityความจริง. The physicalกายภาพ realityความจริง
179
475000
2000
08:09
is that those two tilesกระเบื้อง are the sameเหมือนกัน.
180
477000
5000
08:14
Here you see fourสี่ grayสีเทา tilesกระเบื้อง on your left,
181
482000
3000
08:17
sevenเจ็ด grayสีเทา tilesกระเบื้อง on the right.
182
485000
2000
08:19
I'm not going to changeเปลี่ยนแปลง those tilesกระเบื้อง at all,
183
487000
2000
08:21
but I'm going to revealเปิดเผย the restส่วนที่เหลือ of the sceneฉาก
184
489000
2000
08:23
and see what happensที่เกิดขึ้น to your perceptionความเข้าใจ.
185
491000
3000
08:26
The fourสี่ blueสีน้ำเงิน tilesกระเบื้อง on the left are grayสีเทา.
186
494000
4000
08:30
The sevenเจ็ด yellowสีเหลือง tilesกระเบื้อง on the right are alsoด้วย grayสีเทา.
187
498000
3000
08:33
They are the sameเหมือนกัน. Okay?
188
501000
2000
08:35
Don't believe me? Let's watch it again.
189
503000
4000
08:39
What's trueจริง for colorสี is alsoด้วย trueจริง for complexซับซ้อน perceptionsการรับรู้ of motionการเคลื่อนไหว.
190
507000
4000
08:43
So here we have --
191
511000
3000
08:46
let's turnกลับ this around -- a diamondเพชร.
192
514000
5000
08:51
And what I'm going to do is, I'm going to holdถือ it here,
193
519000
2000
08:53
and I'm going to spinปั่น it.
194
521000
4000
08:57
And for all of you, you'llคุณจะ see it probablyอาจ spinningการปั่นด้าย this directionทิศทาง.
195
525000
3000
09:00
Now I want you to keep looking at it.
196
528000
3000
09:03
Moveย้าย your eyesตา around, blinkกะพริบตา, maybe closeปิด one eyeตา.
197
531000
2000
09:05
And suddenlyทันใดนั้น it will flipดีด, and startเริ่มต้น spinningการปั่นด้าย the oppositeตรงข้าม directionทิศทาง.
198
533000
4000
09:09
Yes? Raiseยก your handมือ if you got that. Yes?
199
537000
3000
09:12
Keep blinkingกระพริบ. Everyทุกๆ time you blinkกะพริบตา it will switchสวิตซ์. AlrightAlright?
200
540000
4000
09:16
So I can askถาม you, whichที่ directionทิศทาง is it rotatingหมุน?
201
544000
4000
09:20
How do you know?
202
548000
2000
09:22
Your brainสมอง doesn't know. Because bothทั้งสอง are equallyพอ ๆ กัน likelyน่าจะ.
203
550000
3000
09:25
So dependingทั้งนี้ขึ้นอยู่กับ on where it looksรูปลักษณ์, it flipsพลิก
204
553000
2000
09:27
betweenระหว่าง the two possibilitiesความเป็นไปได้.
205
555000
3000
09:30
Are we the only onesคน that see illusionsภาพลวงตา?
206
558000
2000
09:32
The answerตอบ to this questionคำถาม is no.
207
560000
2000
09:34
Even the beautifulสวย bumblebeebumblebee,
208
562000
2000
09:36
with its mereเท่านั้น one millionล้าน brainสมอง cellsเซลล์,
209
564000
2000
09:38
whichที่ is 250 timesครั้ง fewerน้อยลง cellsเซลล์ than you have in one retinaจอตา,
210
566000
3000
09:41
seesเห็น illusionsภาพลวงตา, does the mostมากที่สุด complicatedซับซ้อน things
211
569000
3000
09:44
that even our mostมากที่สุด sophisticatedซับซ้อน computersคอมพิวเตอร์ can't do.
212
572000
3000
09:47
So in my labห้องปฏิบัติการ, we of courseหลักสูตร work on bumblebeesผึ้ง.
213
575000
2000
09:49
Because we can completelyอย่างสมบูรณ์ controlควบคุม theirของพวกเขา experienceประสบการณ์,
214
577000
2000
09:51
and see how that altersalters the architectureสถาปัตยกรรม of theirของพวกเขา brainสมอง.
215
579000
2000
09:53
And we do this in what we call the Beeผึ้ง Matrixมดลูก.
216
581000
3000
Bee Matrix"
09:56
And here you have the hiveรัง. You can see the queenพระราชินี beeผึ้ง,
217
584000
2000
09:58
that largeใหญ่ beeผึ้ง in the middleกลาง there. Those are all her daughtersลูกสาว, the eggsไข่.
218
586000
3000
10:01
And they go back and forthออกมา betweenระหว่าง this hiveรัง
219
589000
3000
10:04
and the arenaสนามกีฬา, viaผ่านทาง this tubeหลอด.
220
592000
5000
10:09
And you'llคุณจะ see one of the beesผึ้ง come out here.
221
597000
2000
10:11
You see how she has a little numberจำนวน on her?
222
599000
3000
10:14
Yeah there is anotherอื่น one comingมา out. She has anotherอื่น numberจำนวน on her.
223
602000
3000
10:17
Now, they are not bornโดยกำเนิด that way. Right?
224
605000
3000
10:20
We pullดึง them out, put them in the fridgeตู้เย็น, and they fallตก asleepนอนหลับ.
225
608000
2000
10:22
And then you can supergluesuperglue little numbersหมายเลข on them.
226
610000
2000
10:24
(Laughter
227
612000
2000
10:26
And now, in this experimentการทดลอง they get rewardedได้รับรางวัล if they go to the blueสีน้ำเงิน flowersดอกไม้.
228
614000
4000
10:30
And they landที่ดิน on the flowerดอกไม้. They stickติด theirของพวกเขา tongueลิ้น in there,
229
618000
3000
10:33
calledเรียกว่า a proboscisงวง, and they drinkดื่ม sugarน้ำตาล waterน้ำ.
230
621000
2000
10:35
Now she is drinkingการดื่ม a glassกระจก of waterน้ำ that's about that bigใหญ่ to you and I,
231
623000
3000
10:38
will do that about threeสาม timesครั้ง, and then flyบิน.
232
626000
6000
10:44
And sometimesบางครั้ง they learnเรียน not to go to the blueสีน้ำเงิน,
233
632000
2000
10:46
but to go to where the other beesผึ้ง go.
234
634000
2000
10:48
So they copyสำเนา eachแต่ละ other. They can countนับ to fiveห้า. They can recognizeรับรู้ facesใบหน้า.
235
636000
3000
10:51
And here she comesมา down the ladderกระได.
236
639000
3000
10:54
And she'llเปลือก come into the hiveรัง, find an emptyว่างเปล่า honeyน้ำผึ้ง potหม้อ
237
642000
2000
10:56
and throwโยน up, and that's honeyน้ำผึ้ง.
238
644000
2000
10:58
(Laughter
239
646000
1000
10:59
Now rememberจำ -- (Laughterเสียงหัวเราะ)
240
647000
3000
11:02
-- she's supposedควร to be going to the blueสีน้ำเงิน flowersดอกไม้.
241
650000
2000
11:04
But what are these beesผึ้ง doing in the upperบน right cornerมุม?
242
652000
3000
11:07
It looksรูปลักษณ์ like they're going to greenสีเขียว flowersดอกไม้.
243
655000
2000
11:09
Now, are they gettingได้รับ it wrongไม่ถูกต้อง?

14:38
Because what I've been tryingพยายาม to do is really celebrateฉลอง uncertaintyความไม่แน่นอน.

303
876000

14:50
So, if we have the lightsไฟ down.
304
878000
2000
14:52
And what we have here --
305
880000
6000
14:58
Can everyoneทุกคน see 25 purpleสีม่วง surfacesพื้นผิว
306
886000
3000

15:07
So, now, what I want to do:
309
895000
2000
15:09
I'm going to put the middleกลาง nineเก้า surfacesพื้นผิว here

15:17
All right. Now you can see that changesการเปลี่ยนแปลง the lightเบา
313

3000

15:20
that's comingมา throughตลอด there. Right?
314
908000
2000
15:22
Because now the lightเบา is going throughตลอด a yellowishค่อนข้างเหลือง filterกรอง
315
910000
2000
15:24
and then a purplishสีม่วง filterกรอง.
316
912000

15:26
I'm going to do this oppositeตรงข้าม on the left here.
317
914000
5000
15:31
I'm going to put the middleกลาง nineเก้า underภายใต้ a purplishสีม่วง lightเบา.
318

15:38
Now, some of you will noticeแจ้งให้ทราบ that the consequenceผลพวง is that
319
926000
