Why you should listen

Julia Sweeney is a writer, director, actress, comedian and monologist. She is known for being a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1995, where she created and popularized the androgynous character, Pat. She is also well known for her comedic and dramatic monologues. God Said Ha! is a monologue about serious illness, her brother's lymphoma and her own cancer, and her family's crazy reactions to this crisis as they soldiered their way through struggle, confusion and death. This play was performed all over the U.S. and on Broadway at the Lyceum Theater. It was made into a film produced by Quentin Tarantino, and the comedy album from the show was nominated for a Grammy.

Sweeney's second monologue, In the Family Way, played in theatrical runs in New York and Los Angeles. It was ultimately fashioned into a book, a memoir titled If It's Not One Thing, It's Your Mother. Sweeney's third monologue, Letting Go of God, chronicled her journey from Catholicism to atheism. It was made into a film that played on Showtime.

So we're drivingsürme home and she's looking out the windowpencere, and she goesgider,
79
189000
3000
Sonra eve doğru yoldayken, arabanın penceresinden dışarıya bakarak şöyle dedi,
03:27
"MomAnne. What if two just people saw eachher other on the streetsokak,

3000
Ve bir sürü kadın ve bir sürü de erkek varsa ve aniden yapmaya başlarlarsa, anne?
03:44

87
209000
2000

03:46
And I said, "Oh, no, no.
88
211000
3000
"Yoo, hayır, hayır.
03:49
That's not how we do it."
89
214000
3000
Biz böyle yapmayız."
03:52
Then we got home and we see the catkedi. And she goesgider,
90
217000
2000
Eve vardık, kapıda kedimizi gördük. Sordu,
03:54
"MomAnne, how do catskediler do it?"
91
219000
2000
"Anne, kediler nasıl yaparlar?"
03:56
And I go, "Oh, it's the sameaynı. It's basicallytemel olarak the sameaynı."
92
221000
2000
Ben de "Şey, aynı şekilde. Temel olarak aynı şey işte."
03:58
And then she got all caughtyakalandı up in the legsbacaklar. "But how would the legsbacaklar go, MomAnne?
93
223000
2000
Sonra da bacaklarda takılıp kaldı. "Ama bacaklar ne oluyor, nasıl duruyor, anne?
04:00
I don't understandanlama the legsbacaklar."
94
225000
2000
Bacakları anlayamadım."
04:02
She goesgider, "MomAnne, everyoneherkes can't do the splitsböler."
95
227000
2000
Israr etti, "Anne, herkes bacaklarını tamamen ayıramaz ki"
04:04
And I go, "I know, but the legsbacaklar ..."
96
229000
2000
Ben "Biliyorum, ama bacaklar..."
04:06
and I'm probablymuhtemelen like, "The legsbacaklar get workedişlenmiş out."
97
231000
2000
Şöyle bir haldeyim "Bacaklar bir şekilde hallediliyor"
04:08
And she goesgider, "But I just can't understandanlama it."
98
233000
1000
Israr etmeye devam etti "Ama, bunu aklım almıyor ki."
04:09
So I go, "You know, why don't we go on the InternetInternet,
99
234000
2000
Ben de "İnternete neden gireriz biliyorsun,
04:11
and maybe we can see ... like on WikipediaWikipedia." (LaughterKahkaha)
100
236000
3000
ve belki de bunu ... mesela Wikipedia'da görebiliriz..."
04:15
So we go onlineinternet üzerinden, and we put in "catskediler matingçiftleşme."
101
240000
2000
İnternete bağlandık ve 'kedilerin çiftleşmesi' diye aradık.
04:17
And, unfortunatelyne yazık ki, on YouTubeYouTube, there's manyçok catskediler matingçiftleşme videosvideolar.
102
242000
3000
Ama şanssızlık bu ya, youtube'da bir sürü çiftleşen kedi videosu var.
04:20
And we watchedizledi them and I'm so thankfulmüteşekkir,
103
245000
2000
Seyretmeye başladık, bunları bulduğuma da müteşekkirim,
04:22
because she's just like, "WowVay canına! This is so amazingşaşırtıcı."
104
247000
2000
çünkü durmadan "Vay be, Bu inanılmaz" diyip duruyordu.
04:24
She goesgider, "What about dogsköpekler?"
105
249000
3000
Sormaya devam etti, "Peki ya köpekler?"
04:27
So we put in dogsköpekler matingçiftleşme, and,
106
252000
2000
Oradan çiftleşen köpeklere geçtik, ve
04:29
you know, we're watchingseyretme it, and she's totallybütünüyle absorbedemilir.
107
254000
2000
tahmin edersiniz, seyrediyoruz ve o tamamen kendini kaptırmış durumda
04:31
And then she goesgider, "MomAnne,
108

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Julia Sweeney - Actor, comedian, playwright
Julia Sweeney creates comedic works that tackle deep issues: cancer, family, faith.
