ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Sheena Iyengar - Psycho-economist
Sheena Iyengar studies how people choose (and what makes us think we're good at it).

Why you should listen

We all think we're good at making choices; many of us even enjoy making them. Sheena Iyengar looks deeply at choosing and has discovered many surprising things about it. For instance, her famous "jam study," done while she was a grad student, quantified a counterintuitive truth about decisionmaking -- that when we're presented with too many choices, like 24 varieties of jam, we tend not to choose anything at all. (This and subsequent, equally ingenious experiments have provided rich material for Malcolm Gladwell and other pop chroniclers of business and the human psyche.)

Iyengar's research has been informing business and consumer-goods marketing since the 1990s. But she and her team at the Columbia Business School throw a much broader net. Her analysis touches, for example, on the medical decisionmaking that might lead up to choosing physician-assisted suicide, on the drawbacks of providing too many choices and options in social-welfare programs, and on the cultural and geographical underpinning of choice. Her book The Art of Choosing shares her research in an accessible and charming story that draws examples from her own life.

02:01
This was due應有 to a fundamental基本的 difference區別
42
106000
2000
02:03
in our ideas思路 about choice選擇.
43
108000
3000
02:06
From my American美國 perspective透視,
44
111000
2000
02:08
when a paying付款 customer顧客 makes品牌 a reasonable合理 request請求
45
113000
2000
02:10
based基於 on her preferences優先,
46
115000
2000
02:12
she has every一切 right to have that request請求 met會見.
47
117000
3000
02:15
The American美國 way, to quote引用 Burger漢堡包 King國王,
48
120000
2000
02:17
is to "have it your way,"
49
122000
2000
"吃出你自己的方式",
02:19
because, as Starbucks星巴克 says,
50
124000
2000
02:21
"happiness幸福 is in your choices選擇."
51
126000
2000
"快樂是自己選的"。
02:23
(Laughter
52
128000
2000
02:25
But from the Japanese日本 perspective透視,
53
130000
3000
02:28
it's their duty義務 to protect保護 those who don't know any better --
54
133000
3000
02:31
(Laughter
55
136000
2000
02:33
in this case案件, the ignorant愚昧 gaijin蓋緊 --
56
138000
2000
02:35
from making製造 the wrong錯誤 choice選擇.
57
140000
3000
02:38
Let's face面對 it: the way I wanted my tea
58
143000
2000
02:40
was inappropriate不當 according根據 to cultural文化 standards標準,
59
145000
3000
02:43
and they were doing their best最好 to help me save保存 face面對.
60
148000
3000
02:46
Americans美國人 tend趨向 to believe
61
151000
2000
02:48
that they've他們已經 reached到達 some sort分類 of pinnacle巔峰
62
153000
2000
02:50
in the way they practice實踐 choice選擇.
63
155000
2000
02:52
They think that choice選擇, as seen看到 through通過 the American美國 lens鏡片

03:00
Unfortunately
67

03:02
these beliefs信仰 are based基於 on assumptions假設
68
167000
2000
03:04
that don't always hold保持 true真正
69
169000
2000
03:06
in many許多 countries國家, in many許多 cultures文化.
70
171000
3000
03:09
At times they don't even hold保持 true真正

03:11
at America's美國 own擁有 borders國界.
72
176000
2000
03:13
I'd like to discuss討論 some of these assumptions假設

2000
03:15
and the problems問題 associated相關 with them.

1310000

22:07
because I have to rely依靠 on what other people suggest建議.
537
1312000

22:09
And I can't decide決定.
538
1314000
2000
22:11
And so one time I was in a beauty美女 salon沙龍,
539
1316000
2000
22:13
and I was trying to decide決定 between之間 two very light shades色調 of pink.
540
1318000
3000
22:16
And one was called "Ballet芭蕾舞 Slippers拖鞋."
541
1321000
2000
Ballet Slippers)
22:18
And the other one was called "Adorable可愛的."
542
1323000
3000
Adorable)
22:21
(Laughter
543
1326000
2000
22:23
And so I asked these two ladies
544
1328000
2000
22:25
and the one lady淑女 told me, "Well, you should definitely無疑 wear穿 'Ballet'芭蕾舞 Slippers拖鞋.'"
545
1330000
2000
22:27
"Well, what does it look like?"
546
1332000
2000
"它看起來是怎樣的顏色?"
22:29
"Well, it's a very elegant優雅 shade陰涼處 of pink."
547
1334000
2000
"嗯,這是非常優雅的淺粉色"。
22:31
"Okay, great."
548
1336000
2000
"喔喔,感覺不錯"
22:33
The other lady淑女 tells告訴 me to wear穿 "Adorable可愛的."
549
1338000
2000
22:35
"What does it look like?"
550
1340000
2000
"那它看起來是怎樣的顏色?"
22:37
"It's a glamorous富有魅力的 shade陰涼處 of pink."
551
1342000
3000
"它看起來是較嫵媚的淺粉色"
22:41
And so I asked them, "Well, how do I tell them apart距離?
552
1346000
2000
22:43
What's different不同 about them?"
553
1348000
2000
"這2者有什麼差別?"
22:45
And they said, "Well, one is elegant優雅, the other one's那些 glamorous富有魅力的."
554
1350000
2000
22:47
Okay, we got that.
555
1352000
2000
22:49
And the only thing they had consensus共識 on:
556
1354000
2000
22:51
well, if I could see them, I would
557
1356000
2000
22:53
clearly明確地 be able能夠 to tell them apart距離.
558
1358000
2000
22:55
(Laughter
559
1360000
2000
22:57
And what I wondered想知道 was whether是否 they were being存在 affected受影響
560
1362000
3000
23:00
by the name名稱 or the content內容 of the color顏色,
561
1365000
2000
23:02
so I decided決定 to do a little experiment實驗.
562
1367000
3000
23:05
So I brought these two bottles瓶子 of nail polish拋光 into the laboratory實驗室,
563
1370000
3000
23:08
and I stripped剝離 the labels標籤 off.
564
1373000
2000
23:10
And I brought women婦女 into the laboratory實驗室,
565
1375000
2000
23:12
and I asked them, "Which哪一個 one would you pick?"
566
1377000
2000
23:14
50 percent百分 of the women婦女 accused被告 me of playing播放 a trick,
567
1379000
3000
23:17
of putting the same相同 color顏色 nail polish拋光
568
1382000
2000
23:19
in both those bottles瓶子.
569
1384000
2000
23:21
(Laughter
570

572
1392000
3000
23:30
Now, of the women婦女 that could tell them apart距離,
573
1395000
3000
23:33
when the labels標籤 were off, they picked採摘的 "Adorable可愛的,"
574
1398000
3000
23:36
and when the labels標籤 were on,
575
1401000

23:41
So as far as I can tell,
