wat heb je zoal gedaan?
what have you been up to?
van de Atlantische Oceaan
of the Atlantic Ocean,
te veel Jules Verne heb gelezen,
Jules Verne as a young boy,
I've led a team to design and build
leidde ik een team
diepst duikende duikboot werkte --
diving submersible on the planet,
om haar te besturen.
to personally pilot it too.
van de Atlantische Oceaan.
the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
VV: No.
de laatste 10 à 15 jaar wel heeft gezien.
the developments in the last 10, 15 years.
om de ruimte te verkennen,
the means to explore outer space,
om technologieën te ontwikkelen
spending their resources
that can take us to places
die nog nooit onderzocht zijn.
it's 70 percent of our entire planet,
met onze expeditie,
with our expedition
van de planeet kan bereiken,
on the bottom of the planet
die nog onontdekt is, kunnen ontdekken.
that is still unexplored.
gaaf gereedschap voor nodig, toch?
to do that, right?
the Limiting Factor.
The Pressure Drop.
the Pressure Drop.
90 millimeters-thick,
90 mm dikke titanium sfeer
naar het allerdiepste punt van de oceaan.

of ocean exploration?
van de oceaanverkenning?
van de oceaanverkenning,
of ocean exploration,
als jij mij een keer meeneemt.
if you give me a ride in yours.
hoe het daar beneden is.
where the pressure is so intense
waar de druk zo enorm is --
an Eiffel Tower on your toe.
op je teen zet.
dat we die titanium sfeer hebben
this titanium sphere

to these extreme depths

en dat waren onderzoeksboten.
and those were experimental craft.

British citizen in history
Dr. Alan Jamieson of Newcastle University
van de Newcastle University,
is what I'm guessing.
waar jij bang voor bent?
different to go diving.
wil je niet in een duikboot zijn.
you do not want to be in the submarine.
in een afgesloten ruimte.
eight to nine hours in a confined space.
dan mijn vorige carrière,
from the career I had previously
de wind zweept en het koud is.
where you're in open spaces,
It's much more technical.
bij het gebruik van instrumenten,
in using the instruments
anything that can go wrong.
echt iets fout gaat,
goes wrong in the submersible,
dat je bang voor lekkages bent.
is what you're saying.
maar het is ook niet heel erg,
but if it's a leak that's happening,
because if it was really bad
is natuurlijk ook niet best.
that wouldn't be good either,
is de duikboot heel veilig.
a lot of things in life,
of dit soort dingen bestand zijn
things like this can survive
pressures and conditions.
in elkaar gezet, toch?
is so perfectly machined, right?
accuraat geproduceerd is.
to within .1 percent of machine.
om mee te werken,
haven't figured it out,
to make an almost perfect sphere,
something to pressure,
geometry you can have.
en het luik gaat dicht,
and that hatch closes,
en ook weer boven kom.
to go down and come back up.
controleer je zeker extra?
you double-check --
in diving a submarine.
in de Zuidelijke Oceaan heeft gedoken.
the Southern Ocean before.
en ik ben blij dat het klaar is.
DB: Yeah --
VV: Dank je.
as Kelly mentioned.
het mysterie daadwerkelijk op te lossen.
to actually solve the mystery.

in the Indian Ocean?" --
and one in the Java Trench.
hebben we beide in kaart gebracht.
with a brilliant sonar.
voor verificatie.
to the bottom and verified.
of the Java Trench,
als we een duik hadden volbracht,
one of our major dives,
om het te veranderen,
to Wikipedia and change it
to get down there
om er te komen
to spend down there?
best een tijdje.
quite a bit of time.
voor vier dagen in het vaartuig --
of oxygen supply in the vessel.
zal ik het wel niet meer nodig hebben --
I'm probably not going to use it,
om het diepste punt te bereiken,
to the deepest part of the ocean
gesproken drie tot vier uur
usually three or four hours
tien à elf uur in zitten;
for more than 10 or 11 hours.
Indische Oceaan ...
of the Indian Ocean.
nog nooit iemand heeft gezien?
besides you has ever seen before --
from one of our robotic landers.
van een van onze robotlanders.
actually see a robust assfish --
een 'robust assfish' --
dat nog nooit is gezien.
a creature that's never been seen before.
een 'stalked ascidian' geheten,
called a stalked ascidian,
have ever looked like this before.

at the bottom of its stalk,
for a couple of hours,
miljarden jaren lang geïsoleerd waren;
been isolated for billions of years
om ze te filmen
been down there to film them
is om dit instrument te bouwen.
is to build this tool.
kunnen we er mogelijk meer maken
more of them potentially
duizenden duiken voltooien,
to do thousands of dives,
had no idea even existed.
waarvan we het bestaan niet kenden.
in de ruimte geweest
to space than the bottom of the ocean.
you're going to give it away.

with his Deep Sea Challenger --

actually in two weeks,
nog nooit vertoond.
and do it multiple times,
de technologie bewezen
we'll have proven the technology
it will stay open.
DB: Jij bedankt.
DB: Thank you.
ABOUT THE SPEAKERS
Victor Vescovo - Undersea explorer, investorIn 2019, Victor Vescovo could become the first person to have climbed to the highest point of all the world's continents as well as descended to the deepest reaches of all its oceans, including the Challenger Deep.
Why you should listen
The Five Deeps Expedition was envisioned and sponsored by Texas native Victor Vescovo, who will solo pilot the submersible on each of its main dives. In 2017, Vescovo became the 12th American to complete the "Explorers Grand Slam," which requires climbing the highest peak on all seven of the world's continents, including Mt. Everest, and skiing at least 100 kilometers to both the North and South Poles. He recently became the first person to the bottom of the Atlantic and Southern Oceans, and in 2019 could become the first person in history to have climbed to the top of all the world's continents as well as descended to the bottom of all its oceans, including the Challenger Deep.
For more than 20 years, Vescovo served as an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve, retiring in 2014 as a Commander (O-5). He served at various times on extended active duty, primarily onboard the USS Nimitz, USS Blue Ridge and ashore in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, where he was posted to serve for more than a year after the 9/11 attacks as a counter-terrorism specialist. In the civilian world, he is a cofounder and Managing Partner of private equity firm Insight Equity, an industrial buyout firm with over $1 billion in capital, where he focuses on growing and enhancing aerospace, defense and electronics firms. Vescovo is also certified as a jet fixed-wing aircraft and helicopter pilot, as well as a submarine test pilot.
