01:17
The reason原因 I'm reciting背誦

26

01:23
where a question
is going to start開始 being存在 asked,
28
71280
2216
01:25
which哪一個 is: Why should we
01:29
other than if English英語

30
77080

01:36
where almost幾乎 everybody每個人 in the world世界

32
84120
5480
01:42
I think there are a lot of reasons原因,
33
90560
1816
01:44
but I first want to address地址
34
92400
2336
01:46
the one that you're probably大概
most likely容易 to have heard聽說 of,
35
94760
2856
01:49
because actually其實 it's more
dangerous危險 than you might威力 think.
36
97640
4336
01:54
And that is the idea理念
37
102000
1736
01:55
that a language語言 channels渠道 your thoughts思念,
38
103760
2776
01:58
that the vocabulary詞彙
and the grammar語法 of different不同 languages語言
39
106560
4376
02:02
gives everybody每個人
a different不同 kind of acid trip,
40
110960
3816
02:06
so to speak說話.
41
114800
1216
02:08
That is a marvelously不平凡 enticing誘人 idea理念,
42
116040
4216
02:12
but it's kind of fraught誤人子弟.
43
120280
1296
02:13
So it's not that it's untrue不確實 completely全然.
44
121600
3456
02:17
So for example, in French法國 and Spanish西班牙語
45
125080
3815
02:20
the word for table is,
for some reason原因, marked as feminine女人.
46
128919
4257
02:25
So, "la table," "la mesa檯面,"
you just have to deal合同 with it.
47
133200
3936
"la table" 和 "la mesa"。
據表明
02:29
It has been shown顯示
48
137160
1496
02:30
that if you are a speaker揚聲器
of one of those languages語言
49
138680
2396
02:33
and you happen發生 to be asked
50
141100
2676
02:35
how you would imagine想像 a table talking,
51
143800
4056
02:39
then much more often經常
than could possibly或者 be an accident事故,
52
147880
3896
02:43
a French法國 or a Spanish西班牙語 speaker揚聲器
53
151800
1696
02:45
says that the table would talk
with a high and feminine女人 voice語音.
54
153520
4856
02:50
So if you're French法國 or Spanish西班牙語,
to you, a table is kind of a girl女孩,
55
158400
4136
02:54
as opposed反對 to if you
are an English英語 speaker揚聲器.
56
162560
3176
02:57
It's hard not to love data數據 like that,
57
165760
1816
02:59
and many許多 people
will tell you that that means手段
58
167600
2136
03:01
that there's a worldview世界觀 that you have
if you speak說話 one of those languages語言.
59
169760
4816
03:06
But you have to watch out,
60
174600
1296
03:07
because imagine想像 if somebody
put us under the microscope顯微鏡,
61
175920
4456
03:12
the us being存在 those of us
who speak說話 English英語 natively本地.
62
180400
2456
03:14
What is the worldview世界觀 from English英語?
63
182880
3856
03:18
So for example,
let's take an English英語 speaker揚聲器.
64
186760
2736
03:21
Up on the screen屏幕, that is Bono波諾.
65
189520
3296
03:24
He speaks說話 English英語.
66
192840
1616
03:26
I presume假設 he has a worldview世界觀.
67
194480
2936
03:29
Now, that is Donald唐納德 Trump王牌.
68
197440
3656
03:33
In his way,
69
201120
1216
03:34
he speaks說話 English英語 as well.
70
202360
1416
03:35
(Laughter
71
203800
1520
03:39
And here is Ms女士. Kardashian卡戴珊,
72
207520
3336
03:42
and she is an English英語 speaker揚聲器, too.
73
210880
1976
03:44
So here are three speakers音箱
of the English英語 language語言.
74
212880
2776
03:47
What worldview世界觀 do those
three people have in common共同?
75
215680
3576
03:51
What worldview世界觀 is shaped成形 through通過
the English英語 language語言 that unites聯信 them?
76
219280
5096
03:56
It's a highly高度 fraught誤人子弟 concept概念.
77
224400
1816
03:58
And so gradual consensus共識 is becoming變得
that language語言 can shape形狀 thought,
78
226240
4856
04:03
but it tends趨向 to be in rather darling寵兒,
04:09
It's not a matter of giving you
a different不同 pair of glasses眼鏡 on the world世界.
80
237600
4600
04:14
Now, if that's the case案件,
81
242680
2336
04:17
then why learn學習 languages語言?
82
245040
1936
04:19
If it isn't going to change更改
the way you think,
83
247000
2536
04:21
what would the other reasons原因 be?
84
249560
1600
04:23
There are some.
85
251720
1200
04:25
One of them is that if you
want to imbibe吸收 a culture文化,
86
253600
5376
04:31
if you want to drink it in,
if you want to become成為 part部分 of it,
87
259000
3136
04:34
then whether是否 or not
the language語言 channels渠道 the culture文化 --
88
262160
3896
04:38
and that seems似乎 doubtful --
89
266080
1936
04:40
if you want to imbibe吸收 the culture文化,
90
268040
1816
04:41
you have to control控制 to some degree
91
269880
2456
04:44
the language語言 that the culture文化
happens發生 to be conducted進行 in.
92
272360
3336
04:47
There's no other way.
93
275720
1696
04:49
There's an interesting有趣
illustration插圖 of this.
94
277440
2496
04:51
I have to go slightly obscure
but really you should seek尋求 it out.
95
279960
3696
04:55
There's a movie電影 by the Canadian加拿大

(Denys Arcand)
05:00
read out in English英語 on the page,
"Dennis丹尼斯 Ar-candAR-CAND,"
97
288040
2696

05:04
He did a film電影 called "Jesus耶穌 of Montreal蒙特利爾."
99

05:15
There's one scene現場 closest最近的 to the end結束,
103
303800
2456
05:18
where they have to take a friend朋友
to an Anglophone講英語 hospital醫院.
104
306280
3456
05:21
In the hospital
they have to speak說話 English英語.
105
309760
2096
05:23
Now, they speak說話 English英語
but it's not their native本地人 language語言,
106
311880
2856
05:26
they'd他們會 rather not speak說話 English英語.
107
314760
1696
05:28
And they speak說話 it more slowly慢慢地,
108
316480
1936
05:30
they have accents口音, they're not idiomatic慣用的.
109
318440
1976
05:32
Suddenly突然 these characters人物
that you've fallen墮落 in love with
110
320440
2696
05:35
become成為 husks of themselves他們自己,
they're shadows陰影 of themselves他們自己.
111
323160
3400
05:39
To go into a culture文化
112
327280
1696
05:41
and to only ever process處理 people
through通過 that kind of skrimskrim curtain窗簾
113
329000
4016
05:45
is to never truly get the culture文化.
114
333040
2896
05:47
And so the extent程度 that hundreds數以百計
of languages語言 will be left,
115
335960
2776
05:50
one reason原因 to learn學習 them
116
338760
1256
05:52
is because they are tickets門票
to being存在 able能夠 to participate參加
117
340040
3696
05:55
in the culture文化 of the people
who speak說話 them,
118
343760
2256
05:58
just by virtue美德 of the fact事實
that it is their code.
119
346040
3176
06:01
So that's one reason原因.
120
349240
1240
06:04
it's been shown顯示
122
352760
1416
06:06
that if you speak說話 two languages語言,
dementia癡呆 is less likely容易 to set in,
123
354200
4936
06:11
and that you are probably大概
a better multitasker身兼數職.
124
359160
3336
06:14
And these are factors因素 that set in early,
125
362520
3416
06:17
and so that ought應該 to give you some sense
126
365960
1936
06:19
of when to give junior初級 or juniorettejuniorette
lessons教訓 in another另一個 language語言.
127
367920
4536
06:24
Bilingualism雙語 is healthy健康.
128
372480
2416
06:26
And then, third
129
374920
1896
06:28
languages語言 are just an awful可怕 lot of fun開玩笑.
130
376840
3400
06:32
Much more fun開玩笑 than we're often經常 told.
131
380800
1736
06:34
So for example,
Arabic阿拉伯: "kataba片羽," he wrote,
132
382560
3296
06:37
"yaktubuyaktubu," he writes, she writes.
133
385880
3216
06:41
"UktubUktub," write, in the imperative
134
389120
3016
"Uktub"
06:44
What do those things have in common共同?
135
392160
1896
06:46
All those things have in common共同
136
394080
2096
06:48
the consonants輔音 sitting坐在
in the middle中間 like pillars支柱.
137
396200
3536
06:51
