ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Suzanne Simard - Forest ecologist
Suzanne Simard studies the complex, symbiotic networks in our forests.

Why you should listen

A professor of forest ecology at the University of British Columbia's Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences in Vancouver, Suzanne Simard studies the surprising and delicate complexity in nature. Her main focus is on the below-ground fungal networks that connect trees and facilitate underground inter-tree communication and interaction. Her team's analysis revealed that the fungi networks move water, carbon and nutrients such as nitrogen between and among trees as well as across species. The research has demonstrated that these complex, symbiotic networks in our forests -- at the hub of which stand what she calls the "mother trees" -- mimic our own neural and social networks. This groundbreaking work on symbiotic plant communication has far-reaching implications in both the forestry and agricultural industries, in particular concerning sustainable stewardship of forests and the plant’s resistance to pathogens. She works primarily in forests, but also grasslands, wetlands, tundra and alpine ecosystems.

00:57
I grew成長 up in the forests森林

01:01
I used to lay鋪設 on the forest森林 floor地板

01:04
They were giants

01:21
So I followed其次 in grandpa's爺爺的 footsteps步伐.
22

2136
01:23
He and I had this curiosity好奇心 about forests森林,

01:26

01:43
But as grandpa爺爺 dug

01:45
I became成為 fascinated入迷 with the roots,

01:48
and under that, what I learned學到了 later後來

3080
01:55
Eventually終於, grandpa爺爺 and I
rescued獲救 the poor較差的 dog,
33

3176
01:58
but it was at that moment時刻 that I realized實現
34

02:00
that that palette調色板 of roots and soil

02:03
was really the foundation基礎 of the forest森林.
36
111400
2440
02:06
And I wanted to know more.
37
114640
1400
02:08
So I studied研究 forestry林業.
38
116680
1720
02:11
But soon不久 I found發現 myself working加工

02:37
It seemed似乎 that nothing could stop
this relentless industrial產業 machine.
47
145040
3720
02:41
So I went back to school學校,
48
149640
1400
02:44
and I studied研究 my other world世界.
49
152360
1960
02:47
You see, scientists科學家們 had just discovered發現
in the laboratory實驗室 in vitro體外
50
155480
4256
02:51
that one pine松樹 seedling幼苗 root
51
159760
2136
02:53
could transmit發送 carbon
to another另一個 pine松樹 seedling幼苗 root.
52
161920
3400
02:58
But this was in the laboratory
53
166160
1776
02:59
and I wondered想知道,
could this happen發生 in real真實 forests森林?
54
167960
3056
03:03
I thought yes.
55
171040
1200
03:05
Trees in real真實 forests森林 might威力 also
03:10
But this was really controversial
57
178120
1776
03:11
and some people thought I was crazy,
58
179920
2616
03:14
and I had a really hard time
03:17
But I persevered
60
185640
1440
03:20
and I eventually終於 conducted進行
some experiments實驗 deep in the forest森林,
61
188200
3856
03:24
25 years年份 ago.
62
192080
1400
03:26
I grew成長 80 replicates重複 of three species種類:
63
194120
2896
and western西 red cedar雪松.
64
197040
3176
03:32
I figured想通 the birch樺木 and the fir冷杉
would be connected連接的 in a belowground地下的 web捲筒紙,
65
200240
4056
03:36
but not the cedar雪松.
66
204320
1256
03:37
It was in its own擁有 other world世界.
67
205600
1520
03:40
And I gathered雲集 my apparatus儀器,
68
208440
1856
03:42
and I had no money,
so I had to do it on the cheap低廉.
69
210320
3176
03:45
So I went to Canadian加拿大 Tire --
70
213520
1616
03:47
(Laughter
71
215160
1416
03:48
and I bought some plastic塑料 bags包裝袋
and duct tape膠帶 and shade陰涼處 cloth,
72
216600
3416
03:52
a timer計時器, a paper suit適合, a respirator呼吸器.
73
220040
3240
03:56
And then I borrowed some
high-tech高科技 stuff東東 from my university大學:
74
224160
3176
03:59
a Geiger蓋格 counter計數器, a scintillation閃爍 counter計數器,
a mass spectrometer光譜儀, microscopes顯微鏡.
75
227360
4616
04:04
And then I got some
04:11
and some high pressure壓力 bottles瓶子
78
239280
2016
04:13
of the stable穩定 isotope同位素
04:17
But I was legally法律上 permitted允許.
80
245560
1576
04:19
(Laughter
81
247160
1696
04:20
Oh, and I forgot忘記 some stuff東東,
82
248880
1600
04:25
the bear spray噴霧,
the filters過濾器 for my respirator呼吸器.
84
253600
2840
04:29
Oh well.
85
257160
1200
04:31
The first day of the experiment
we got out to our plot情節
86
259560
2776
04:34
and a grizzly灰熊 bear and her cub幼獸
chased us off.
87
262360
2800
04:37
And I had no bear spray
88
265920
1520
04:41
But you know, this is how
forest森林 research研究 in Canada加拿大 goes.
89
269120
3176
04:44
(Laughter
90
272320
1456
04:45
So I came來了 back the next下一個 day,
91
273800
1536
04:47
and mama媽媽 grizzly灰熊 and her cub幼獸 were gone走了.
92
275360
2256
04:49
So this time, we really got started開始,
93
277640
2016
04:51
and I pulled on my white白色 paper suit適合,
94
279680
2776
04:54
I put on my respirator
95
282480
1840
04:58
and then
96
286160
1216
然後
04:59
I put the plastic塑料 bags包裝袋 over my trees樹木.
97
287400
2280
05:03
I got my giant巨人 syringes注射器,
98
291080
2096
05:05
and I injected注射 the bags包裝袋
99
293200
1656
05:06
with my tracer曳光彈 isotope同位素
05:10
first the birch樺木.
101
298320
1216
05:11
I injected注射 carbon-碳-14, the radioactive放射性的 gas加油站,
102
299560
2976
05:14
into the bag of birch樺木.
103
302560
1576
05:16
And then for fir
104
304160
1256
05:17
I injected注射 the stable穩定 isotope同位素
05:21
I used two isotopes
106
309280
1736
05:23
because I was wondering想知道
107
311040
1256
05:24
whether是否 there was two-way雙向 communication通訊
going on between之間 these species種類.
108
312320
3840
05:29
I got to the final最後 bag,
109
317640
2576
05:32
the 80th replicate複製,
110
320240
1496
05:33
and all of a sudden突然
mama媽媽 grizzly灰熊 showed顯示 up again.
111
321760
2416
05:36
And she started開始 to chase me,
112
324200
1416
05:37
and I had my syringes注射器 above以上 my head,
113
325640
2416
05:40
and I was swatting亂打 the mosquitos蚊子,
and I jumped跳下 into the truck卡車,
114
328080
2936
05:43
and I thought,
115
331040
1216
我想,
05:44
"This is why people do lab實驗室 studies學習."
116
332280
1736
05:46
(Laughter
117
334040
1440
05:49
I waited等待 an hour小時.
118
337120
1496
05:50
I figured想通 it would take this long
119
338640
1616
05:52
for the trees樹木 to suck吮吸 up
the COCO2 through通過 photosynthesis光合作用,
120
340280
2776
05:55
turn it into sugars,
send發送 it down into their roots,
121
343080
3136
05:58
and maybe, I hypothesized假設,
122
346240
2696
06:00
shuttle穿梭 that carbon belowground地下的
to their neighbors鄰居.
123
348960
2800
06:04
After the hour小時 was up,
124
352920
1856
06:06
I rolled熱軋 down my window窗口,
125
354800
1576
06:08
and I checked檢查 for mama媽媽 grizzly灰熊.
126
356400
1600
06:10
Oh good, she's over there
eating her huckleberries越橘.
127
358600
2400
06:13
So I got out of the truck卡車
and I got to work.
128
361720
2616
06:16
I went to my first bag with the birch
I pulled the bag off.
129
364360
3896
06:20
I ran my Geiger蓋格 counter計數器 over its leaves樹葉.
130
368280
2320
06:23
KkhhKKHH!
131
371280
1200
咔!
06:25
Perfect完善.
132

完美。
06:26
The birch樺木 had taken採取 up
06:29
Then the moment時刻 of truth真相.
134

06:31
I went over to the fir冷杉 tree.
135
379200
1520
06:33
I pulled off its bag.
136
381320
1776
06:35
I ran the Geiger蓋格 counter計數器 up its needles,
137

06:37
and I heard聽說 the most beautiful美麗 sound聲音.
138
385480
2200
06:40
KkhhKKHH!
139
388440
1200
咔!
06:42
It was the sound聲音 of birch樺木 talking to fir冷杉,
140
390760
2736
06:45
and birch樺木 was saying,
"Hey, can I help you?"
141
393520
3456
06:49
And fir冷杉 was saying, "Yeah,
can you send發送 me some of your carbon?
142
397000
3616
06:52
Because somebody
threw a shade陰涼處 cloth over me."
143
400640
2400
06:56
I went up to cedar雪松, and I ran
the Geiger蓋格 counter計數器 over its leaves樹葉,
144
404360
3696
07:00
and as I suspected嫌疑,
145
408080
1520
07:04
Cedar雪松 was in its own擁有 world世界.
147
412560
2216
07:06
It was not connected連接的 into the web捲筒紙
07:11
I was so excited
149
419840
1280
07:14
I ran from plot情節 to plot情節
and I checked檢查 all 80 replicates重複.
150
422000
3976
07:18
The evidence證據 was clear明確.
151
426000
2136
07:20
The C-C-13 and C-C-14 was showing展示 me
152
428160
2936
07:23
that paper birch樺木 and Douglas道格拉斯 fir冷杉
were in a lively活潑 two-way雙向 conversation會話.
153
431120
4120
07:27
It turns out at that time of the year,
154
435960
1856
07:29
in the summer夏季,
155
437840
1216
07:31
that birch樺木 was sending發出 more carbon to fir冷杉
than fir冷杉 was sending發出 back to birch樺木,
156
439080
3656
07:34
especially特別 when the fir冷杉 was shaded陰影.
157
442760
2296
07:37
And then in later後來 experiments實驗,
we found發現 the opposite對面,
158
445080
2976
07:40
that fir冷杉 was sending發出 more carbon to birch樺木
than birch樺木 was sending發出 to fir冷杉,
159
448080
3536
07:43
and this was because the fir冷杉 was still
growing生長 while the birch樺木 was leafless葉兒.
160
451640
3640
07:47
So it turns out the two species
07:50
like yin and yang.
162
458560
1280
07:52
And at that moment
everything came來了 into focus焦點 for me.
163
460960
2976
07:55
I knew知道 I had found發現 something big,
164
463960
2256
07:58
something that would change更改 the way
we look at how trees樹木 interact相互作用 in forests森林,
165
466240
4736
08:03
from not just competitors競爭對手
166
471000
2016
08:05
but to cooperators合作夥伴.
167
473040
1680
08:07
And I had found發現 solid固體 evidence證據
168
475800
2456
08:10
of this massive大規模的 belowground地下的
08:13
the other world世界.
170
481680
1240
08:15
Now, I truly hoped希望 and believed相信
171
483960
1896
08:17
that my discovery發現 would change更改
how we practice實踐 forestry林業,
172
485880
3616
08:21
from clear-cutting皆伐 and herbicidingherbiciding
173
489520
1776
08:23
to more holistic整體 and sustainable可持續發展 methods方法,
174
491320
2936
08:26
methods方法 that were less expensive昂貴
and more practical實際的.
175
494280
3216
08:29
What was I thinking思維?
176
497520
1240
08:31
I'll come back to that.
177
499920
1280
08:35
So how do we do science科學
in complex複雜 systems系統 like forests森林?
178
503760
3840
08:40
Well, as forest森林 scientists科學家們,
we have to do our research研究 in the forests森林,
179
508720
3336
08:44
and that's really tough強硬,
as I've shown顯示 you.
180
512080
2016
08:46
And we have to be really good
at running賽跑 from bears.
181
514120
3240
08:50
But mostly大多, we have to persevere持之以恆
182
518760
1576
08:52
in spite儘管 of all the stuff東東
stacked堆疊 against反對 us.
183
520360
2896
08:55
And we have to follow跟隨 our intuition直覺
and our experiences經驗
184
523280
2616
08:57
and ask really good questions問題.
185
525920
2136
09:00
And then we've我們已經 got to gather收集 our data數據
and then go verify校驗.
186
528080
3176
09:03
For me, I've conducted進行 and published發表
hundreds數以百計 of experiments實驗 in the forest森林.
187
531280
5160
09:09
Some of my oldest最老的 experimental試驗 plantations種植園
are now over 30 years年份 old.
188
537080
4000
09:14
You can check them out.
189
542040
1416
09:15
That's how forest森林 science科學 works作品.
190
543480
1800
09:18
So now I want to talk about the science科學.
191
546200
2336
09:20
How were paper birch
09:23
Well, it turns out they were conversing交談
not only in the language語言 of carbon
193
551640
4496
09:28
but also nitrogen and phosphorus
194
556160
3016
09:31
and water and defense防禦 signals信號
and allele等位基因 chemicals化學製品 and hormones激素 --
195
559200
4736
09:35
information信息.
196
563960
1200
信息。
09:38
And you know, I have to tell you,
before me, scientists科學家們 had thought
197
566160
3176
09:41
that this belowground地下的
09:44
was involved參與.
199
572960
1496
09:50
You see their reproductive生殖 organs器官
when you walk步行 through通過 the forest森林.
201
578360
3896
09:54
They're the mushrooms
202
582280
1816
09:56
The mushrooms蘑菇, though雖然,
are just the tip小費 of the iceberg冰山,
203
584120
3016
09:59
because coming未來 out of those stems
are fungal真菌 threads線程 that form形成 a mycelium菌絲,
204
587160
4256
10:03
and that mycelium菌絲
infects感染 and colonizes殖民 the roots
205
591440
2696
10:06
of all the trees樹木 and plants植物.
206
594160
2136
10:08
And where the fungal真菌 cells細胞
interact相互作用 with the root cells細胞,
207
596320
2656
10:11
there's a trade貿易 of carbon for nutrients營養成分,
208
599000
2776
10:13
and that fungus gets得到 those nutrients營養成分
by growing生長 through通過 the soil
209
601800
3056
10:16
and coating塗層 every一切 soil particle粒子.
210
604880
2000
10:19
The web捲筒紙 is so dense稠密 that there can be
hundreds數以百計 of kilometers公里 of mycelium菌絲
211
607840
4296
10:24
under a single footstep腳步.
212
612160
1560
10:26
And not only that, that mycelium菌絲 connects所連接
different不同 individuals個人 in the forest森林,
213
614720
4800
10:32
individuals個人 not only of the same相同 species種類
but between之間 species種類, like birch樺木 and fir冷杉,
214
620320
5616
10:37
and it works作品 kind of like the Internet互聯網.
215
625960
2320
10:41
You see, like all networks
216
629760
1896
10:43
mycorrhizal菌根 networks網絡 have nodes節點 and links鏈接.
217
631680
2816
10:46
We made製作 this map地圖 by examining檢查
the short sequences序列 of DNA脫氧核糖核酸
218
634520
4056
10:50
of every一切 tree and every一切 fungal真菌 individual個人
in a patch補丁 of Douglas道格拉斯 fir冷杉 forest森林.
219
638600
5496
10:56
In this picture圖片, the circles represent代表
the Douglas道格拉斯 fir冷杉, or the nodes節點,
220
644120
3816
10:59
and the lines represent代表 the interlinking互聯互通
fungal真菌 highways公路, or the links鏈接.
221
647960
4120
are the busiest最繁忙 nodes節點.
222
653120
4336
11:09
We call those hub樞紐 trees樹木,
223
657480
1936
11:11
or more fondly憐愛地, mother母親 trees樹木,
224
659440
2416
11:13
because it turns out
that those hub樞紐 trees樹木 nurture培育 their young年輕,
225
661880
4616
11:18
the ones那些 growing生長 in the understory林下.
226
666520
2536
11:21
And if you can see those yellow黃色 dots,
227
669080
2136
11:23
those are the young年輕 seedlings
that have established既定 within the network網絡
228
671240
3296
11:26
of the old mother母親 trees樹木.
229
674560
1240
11:28
In a single forest森林, a mother母親 tree can be
connected連接的 to hundreds數以百計 of other trees樹木.
230
676400
4200
11:33
And using運用 our isotope同位素 tracers示踪劑,
231
681800
2296
11:36
we have found發現 that mother母親 trees樹木
232
684120
1496
11:37
will send發送 their excess過量 carbon
through通過 the mycorrhizal菌根 network網絡
233
685640
2936
11:40
to the understory林下 seedlings,
234
688600
1936
11:42
and we've我們已經 associated相關 this
with increased增加 seedling幼苗 survival生存
235
690560
3136
11:45
by four times.
236
693720
1240
11:47
Now, we know we all
favor偏愛 our own擁有 children孩子,
237
695880
3216
11:51
and I wondered想知道, could Douglas道格拉斯 fir冷杉
recognize認識 its own擁有 kin親屬,
238
699120
3240
11:55
like mama媽媽 grizzly灰熊 and her cub幼獸?
239
703760
2000
11:58
So we set about an experiment
240
706560
1816
12:00
and we grew成長 mother母親 trees樹木
with kin親屬 and stranger's陌生人 seedlings.
241
708400
3896
12:04
And it turns out
they do recognize認識 their kin親屬.
242
712320
2896
with bigger mycorrhizal菌根 networks網絡.
243
715240
4976
12:12
They send發送 them more carbon below下面 ground地面.
244
720240
2416
12:14
They even reduce減少
their own擁有 root competition競爭
245
722680
2576
12:17
to make elbow彎頭 room房間 for their kids孩子.
246
725280
2856
12:20
When mother母親 trees樹木 are injured受傷 or dying垂死,
247
728160
3656
12:23
they also send發送 messages消息 of wisdom智慧
on to the next下一個 generation of seedlings.
248
731840
4520
12:29
So we've我們已經 used isotope同位素 tracing追踪
249
737120
1536
12:30
to trace跟踪 carbon moving移動
from an injured受傷 mother母親 tree
250
738680
2576
12:33
down her trunk樹幹
into the mycorrhizal菌根 network網絡
251
741280
2336
12:35
and into her neighboring鄰接 seedlings,
252
743640
2000
12:38
not only carbon but also defense防禦 signals信號.
253
746640
2776
12:41
And these two compounds化合物
254
749440
1816
12:43
have increased增加 the resistance抵抗性
of those seedlings to future未來 stresses應力.
255
751280
4096
12:47
So trees樹木 talk.
256
755400
1280
12:50
(Applause
257
758560
2016
12:52
Thank you.
258
760600
1200
12:57
Through通過 back and forth向前 conversations對話,
259
765440
2296
12:59
they increase增加 the resilience彈性
of the whole整個 community社區.
260
767760
2680
13:03
It probably大概 reminds提醒 you
of our own擁有 social社會 communities社區,
261
771360
2896
13:06
and our families家庭,
262
774280
1576
13:07
well, at least最小 some families家庭.
263
775880
1381
13:09
(Laughter
264
777285
2211
13:11
So let's come back to the initial初始 point.
265
779520
1905
collections集合 of trees樹木,
266
782480
2456
13:16
they're complex複雜 systems系統
with hubs集線器 and networks網絡
267
784960
3536
13:20
that overlap交疊 and connect trees樹木
and allow允許 them to communicate通信,
268
788520
3496
13:24
and they provide提供 avenues渠道
for feedbacks反饋 and adaptation適應,
269
792040
3776
13:27
and this makes品牌 the forest森林 resilient彈性.
270
795840
2416
13:30
That's because there are many許多 hub樞紐 trees樹木
and many許多 overlapping重疊 networks網絡.
271
798280
4376
13:34
But they're also vulnerable
272
802680
1976
13:36
vulnerable弱勢 not only
to natural自然 disturbances騷亂

13:40
like bark beetles甲蟲 that preferentially優先

274
808200
3696
13:43
but high-grade高分 logging記錄
and clear-cut明確 logging記錄.
275
811920
2440
13:47
You see, you can take out
one or two hub樞紐 trees樹木,
276
815240
2816
13:50
but there comes a tipping小費 point,
277
818080
1720
13:52
because hub樞紐 trees樹木 are not
unlike不像 rivets鉚釘 in an airplane飛機.
278
820920
2936
13:55
You can take out one or two
and the plane平面 still flies蒼蠅,
279
823880
3536
13:59
but you take out one too many許多,
280
827440
1576
14:01
or maybe that one holding保持 on the wings翅膀,
281
829040
2616
14:03
and the whole整個 system系統 collapses崩潰.
282
831680
1840
14:07
So now how are you thinking思維
about forests森林? Differently不同?
283
835000
2896
14:11
Cool.
285
839160
1200
14:13
I'm glad高興.
286
841040
1200
14:14
So, remember記得 I said earlier
that I hoped希望 that my research研究,
287
842920
3856
14:18
my discoveries發現 would change更改
the way we practice實踐 forestry林業.
288
846800
3376
14:22
Well, I want to take a check on that
30 years年份 later後來 here in western西 Canada加拿大.
289
850200
4120
14:34
This is about 100 kilometers公里

290
862840
2536
14:37
just on the border邊境 of Banff班夫 National國民 Park公園.
291
865400
2360
14:41
That's a lot of clear-cuts
14:43
It's not so pristine
293
871020
1440
14:45
In 2014, the World世界 Resources資源 Institute研究所
reported報導 that Canada加拿大 in the past過去 decade
294
873980
5056
14:51
has had the highest最高 forest森林 disturbance騷亂
rate of any country國家 worldwide全世界,
295
879060
3600
14:55
and I bet賭注 you thought it was Brazil巴西.
296
883620
1720
14:59
In Canada加拿大, it's 3.6 percent百分 per year.
297
887140
3536
15:02
Now, by my estimation估計, that's about
four times the rate that is sustainable可持續發展.
298
890700
3920
15:09
Now, massive大規模的 disturbance騷亂 at this scale規模
is known已知 to affect影響 hydrological水文 cycles週期,
299
897100
4336
15:15
and emit發射 greenhouse溫室 gases氣體

301
903460
2896
15:18
which哪一個 creates創建 more disturbance騷亂
and more tree diebacksdiebacks.
302
906380
2920
15:23
Not only that, we're continuing繼續
to plant one or two species種類
303
911300
2976
15:26
and weed野草 out the aspens白楊 and birches樺樹.
304
914300
1960
15:29
These simplified forests森林 lack缺乏 complexity複雜,
305
917260
2576
15:31
and they're really vulnerable弱勢
to infections感染 and bugs蟲子.
306
919860
3416
15:35
And as climate氣候 changes變化,
307
923300
1896
15:37
this is creating創建 a perfect完善 storm風暴
308
925220
2280
15:41
for extreme極端 events事件, like the massive大規模的
15:45
that just swept風靡 across橫過 North America美國,
310
933020

15:47
or that megafiremegafire in the last
15:52
So I want to come back
to my final最後 question:
312
940980
2320
15:56
instead代替 of weakening弱化 our forests森林,
313
944980
1776
15:58
how can we reinforce加強 them
and help them deal合同 with climate氣候 change更改?
314
946780
3560
16:03
Well, you know, the great thing
about forests森林 as complex複雜 systems系統
315
951700
4016
16:07
is they have enormous巨大
16:11
In our recent最近 experiments實驗,
317
959700
1416
16:13
we found發現 with patch-cutting膜片切割
and retention保留 of hub樞紐 trees樹木
318
961140
3456
16:16
and regeneration再生 to a diversity多樣

319
964620
4136
16:20
that these mycorrhizal菌根 networks網絡,
they recover恢復 really rapidly急速.
320
968780
3840
16:25
So with this in mind心神, I want to leave離開 you
with four simple簡單 solutions解決方案.
321
973940
4336
16:30
And we can't kid孩子 ourselves我們自己
that these are too complicated複雜 to act法案 on.
322
978300
3360
16:35
First, we all need
to get out in the forest森林.
323
983180
3200
16:39
We need to reestablish重建
local本地 involvement參與 in our own擁有 forests森林.
324
987500
4536
16:44
You see, most of our forests森林 now
325
992060
1616
16:45
are managed管理 using運用
16:48
but good forest森林 stewardship管家
16:54
Second第二, we need to save保存
16:59
These are the repositories資料庫 of genes基因

329

17:06
So this means手段 less cutting切割.
330
1014620
2256
17:08
I don't mean no cutting切割, but less cutting切割.
331
1016900
2040
17:11
And third第三, when we do cut,
332

2655
17:14
we need to save保存 the legacies遺產,

17:28
We need to be conservationists
17:31
And finally最後, fourthly第四 and finally最後,
339

17:35
we need to regenerate再生 our forests森林
