ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Pardis Sabeti - Computational geneticist
Pardis Sabeti investigates the genomes of microbes, including the Ebola virus, to help understand how to slow them.

Why you should listen

Pardis Sabeti develops algorithms to detect the genetic signatures of adaption in humans and the microbial organisms that infect humans. Among her lab’s key research areas: examining the genetic factors that drive disease susceptibility to Ebola and Lassa hemorrhagic fever, and investigating the genomes of microbes, including Lassa virus, Ebola virus, Plasmodium falciparum malaria, Vibrio cholera and Mycobacterioum tuberculosis, to help find cures.

She's based at the Center for Systems Biology and Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard and the Department of Immunology and Infectious Disease at the Harvard School of Public Health. Sabeti is a National Geographic Emerging Explorer and was named a Time magazine Person of the Year in 2014 as one of the Ebola fighters.

02:39
But by the time that day came來了,
52

02:42
the outbreak暴發 had already已經
been breeding配種 for months個月.
53
150710
2358
02:45
With hundreds數以百計 of cases, it had already已經

54
153092
3640
02:48
And it came來了 into Sierra內華達 Leone塞拉利昂
not as that singular單數 case案件,
55
156756
3644
02:52
but as a tidal潮汐 wave.
56
160424
1292
02:54
We had to work
with the international國際 community社區,
57
162120
2275
02:56
with the Ministry of Health健康, with Kenema凱內馬,
to begin開始 to deal合同 with the cases,
58
164419
3706
03:00
as the next下一個 week brought 31,
59
168149
2071
03:02
then 92, then 147 cases --
all coming未來 to Kenema凱內馬,
60
170244
3674
03:05
one of the only places地方 in Sierra內華達 Leone塞拉利昂
that could deal合同 with this.
61
173942
3301
03:09
And we worked工作 around the clock時鐘
trying to do everything we could,
62
177610
3399
03:13
trying to help the individuals個人,
trying to get attention注意,
63
181033
2961
03:16
but we also did one other simple簡單 thing.
64
184018
1947
03:18
From that specimen標本 that we take
from a patient's耐心 blood血液 to detect檢測 Ebola埃博拉病毒,
65
186544
3789
03:22
we can discard丟棄 it, obviously明顯.
66
190357
2055
03:24
The other thing we can do is, actually其實,
put in a chemical化學 and deactivate關閉 it,
67
192436
3616
03:28
so just place地點 it into a box
and ship it across橫過 the ocean海洋,
68
196076
2730
03:30
and that's what we did.
69
198830
1151
03:32
We sent發送 it to Boston波士頓, where my team球隊 works作品.
70
200005
2096
03:34
And we also worked工作 around the clock時鐘
doing shift轉移 work, day after day,
71
202724
3837
03:38
and we quickly很快 generated產生 99 genomes基因組
of the Ebola埃博拉病毒 virus病毒.
72
206585
3869
03:42
This is the blueprint藍圖 -- the genome基因組
of a virus病毒 is the blueprint藍圖.
73
210478
3057
03:45
We all have one.
74
213559
1159
03:46
It says everything that makes品牌 up us,
75
214742
1945
03:48
and it tells告訴 us so much information信息.
76
216711
1909
03:50
The results結果 of this kind of work
are simple簡單 and they're powerful強大.
77
218644
3177
03:54
We could actually其實 take
these 99 different不同 viruses病毒,
78
222396
2470
03:56
look at them and compare比較 them,
79
224890
1447
03:58
and we could see, actually其實,
compared相比 to three genomes基因組
80
226361
2846
04:01
that had been previously先前
04:04
we could show顯示 that the outbreak暴發
emerged出現 in Guinea幾內亞 months個月 before,
82
232091
3711
04:07
once一旦 into the human人的 population人口,
83
235826
1842
04:09
and from there had been transmitting發射
from human人的 to human人的.
84
237692
2672
04:12
Now, that's incredibly令人難以置信 important重要
85
240388
1544
04:13
when you're trying to figure數字 out
how to intervene干預,
86
241956
2368
04:16
but the important重要 thing
is contact聯繫 tracing追踪.
87
244348
2066
04:18
We also could see that as the virus病毒
was moving移動 between之間 humans人類,
88
246438
3402
04:21
it was mutating變異.
89
249864
1257
04:23
And each of those mutations突變
are so important重要,
90
251145
2151
04:25
because the diagnostics診斷, the vaccines疫苗,
91
253320
2320
04:27
the therapies治療 that we're using運用,
92
255664
1485
04:29
are all based基於 on that genome基因組
04:32
that's what drives驅動器 it.
94
260555
1221
04:33
And so global全球 health健康 experts專家
would need to respond響應,
95
261800
2882
04:36
would have to develop發展,
96
264706
1197
04:37
to recalibrate重新校準 everything
that they were doing.
97
265927
2553
04:41
But the way that science科學 works作品,
the position位置 I was in at that point
98
269079
3181
04:44
is, I had the data數據,
99
272284
1151
04:45
and I could have worked工作
in a silo筒倉 for many許多, many許多 months個月,
100
273459
2636
04:50
submitted提交 the paper for publication出版物,
gone走了 through通過 a few少數 back-and-forths背和的Forth,
102
278342
3460
04:53
and then finally最後 when the paper came來了 out,
might威力 release發布 that data數據.
103
281826
3129
04:56
That's the way the status狀態 quo現狀 works作品.
104
284979
2204
04:59
Well, that was not going to work
at this point, right?
105
287207
2571
05:01
We had friends朋友 on the front面前 lines
106
289802
1608
05:03
and to us it was just obvious明顯
that what we needed需要 is help,
107
291434
3254
05:06
lots of help.
108
294712
1156
05:07
So the first thing we did is,
109
295892
1397
05:09
as soon不久 as the sequences序列
came來了 off the machines,
110
297313
2685
05:12
we published發表 it to the web捲筒紙.
111
300022
1429
05:13
We just released發布 it to the whole整個 world世界
and said, "Help us."
112
301475
2836
05:16
And help came來了.
113
304335
1335
05:17
Before we knew知道 it,
114
305694
1162
05:18
we were being存在 contacted聯繫
from people all over,
115
306880
2336
05:21
surprised詫異 to see the data數據
out there and released發布.
116
309240
2444

out there is just amazing驚人,
127
341406
2780
05:56
and the Internet互聯網 connects所連接 us all.
128
344210
1723
05:57
And could you imagine想像 that instead代替
of being存在 frightened受驚 of each other,
129
345957
3251
06:01
that we all just said, "Let's do this.
130
349232
1857
06:03
Let's work together一起,
and let's make this happen發生."
131
351113
2523
06:05
But the problem問題 is that the data數據
that all of us are using運用,
132
353660
2742
06:08
Googling谷歌搜索 on the web捲筒紙, is just too limited有限
to do what we need to do.
133
356426
4037
06:12
And so many許多 opportunities機會
get missed錯過 when that happens發生.
134
360487
2651
06:15
So in the early part部分
of the epidemic疫情 from Kenema凱內馬,
135
363162
2481
06:17
we'd星期三 had 106 clinical臨床 records記錄
from patients耐心,
136
365667
2742
06:20
and we once一旦 again made製作 that
publicly公然 available可得到 to the world世界.
137
368433
2834
06:23
And in our own擁有 lab實驗室, we could show顯示
that you could take those 106 records記錄,
138
371291
3670
06:26
we could train培養 computers電腦 to predict預測
the prognosis預測 for Ebola埃博拉病毒 patients耐心
139
374985
3618
06:30
to near 100 percent百分 accuracy準確性.
140
378627
1777
06:32
And we made製作 an app應用
that could release發布 that,
141
380428
2097
06:34
to make that available可得到
to health-care衛生保健 workers工人 in the field領域.
142
382549
2770
06:37
But 106 is just not enough足夠
to make it powerful強大,
143
385343
3259
06:40
to validate驗證 it.
144
388626
1151
06:41
So we were waiting等候 for more data數據
to release發布 that.
145
389801
2654
06:44
and the data數據 has still not come.
146
392479
2044
06:46
We are still waiting等候, tweaking扭捏 away,
147
394547
2532
06:49
in silos筒倉 rather than working加工 together一起.
148
397103
2838
06:51
And this just -- we can't accept接受 that.
149
399965
2232
06:54
Right? You, all of you,
cannot不能 accept接受 that.
150
402221
3804
06:58
It's our lives生活 on the line.
151
406049
1682
06:59
And in fact事實, actually其實,
152
407755
1711
07:01
many許多 lives生活 were lost丟失,
153

These are just five

07:16
at Kenema凱內馬 and beyond
158
424331
1764
07:18
that died死亡 while the world世界 waited等待

07:21
quietly悄悄 and separately分別.
160
429179
1860
07:23
See, Ebola埃博拉病毒, like all threats威脅 to humanity人性,
161
431063
2033
07:25
it's fueled燃料 by mistrust不信任
and distraction娛樂 and division.
162
433120
3884
07:29
When we build建立 barriers障礙 amongst其中包括 ourselves我們自己
and we fight鬥爭 amongst其中包括 ourselves我們自己,
163
437028
3773
07:34
But unlike不像 all threats威脅 to humanity人性,
165
442669
1792
07:36
Ebola埃博拉病毒 is one where
we're actually其實 all the same相同.
166
444485
2646
07:39
We're all in this fight鬥爭 together一起.
167
447155
1880
07:41
Ebola埃博拉病毒 on one person's人的 doorstep門階
could soon不久 be on ours我們的.
168
449059
2634
07:44
And so in this place地點
with the same相同 vulnerabilities漏洞,
169
452177
2802
07:47
the same相同 strengths優勢,
the same相同 fears恐懼, the same相同 hopes希望,
170
455003
2413
07:49
I hope希望 that we work together一起 with joy喜悅.
171
457440
3209
07:54
A graduate畢業 student學生 of mine
was reading a book about Sierra內華達 Leone塞拉利昂,
172
462427
3070
07:57
and she discovered發現 that the word "Kenema凱內馬,"

176
475551
1587
08:09
That was really profound深刻 for us,
177
477439
1545
08:11
because without knowing會心 it,
we'd星期三 always felt
178
479008
2094
08:13
that in order訂購 to honor榮譽 the individuals個人
in Kenema凱內馬 where we worked工作,
179
481126
3184
08:16
we had to work openly公然, we had to share分享
and we had to work together一起.
180
484334
4287
08:21
And we have to do that.
181
489074
1177
08:22
We all have to demand需求 that
of ourselves我們自己 and others其他 --
182
490275
3761
08:26
to be open打開 to each other
when an outbreak暴發 happens發生,
183
494060
2874
08:28
to fight鬥爭 in this fight鬥爭 together一起.
184
496958
1650
08:30
Because this is not the first
08:33
it will not be the last,
186
501565
1448
08:35
and there are many許多 other microbes微生物
out there that are lying說謊 in wait,
187
503037

08:38
like Lassa拉沙 virus病毒 and others其他.
188
506216
1425
08:39
And the next下一個 time this happens發生,
189
507665
1509
08:41
it could happen發生 in a city of millions百萬,
it could start開始 there.
190
509198

08:44
It could be something
that's transmitted發送 through通過 the air空氣.
191
512418
2699
08:47
It could even be
08:49
And I know that that is frightening
I understand理解 that,
193
517312
2981
08:52
but I know also,
and this experience經驗 shows節目 us,
194
520317
2654
08:54
that we have the technology技術
and we have the capacity容量
195
522995
3320
08:58
to win贏得 this thing,
196

08:59
to win贏得 this and have

09:02
But we can only do it if we do it together一起
