ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Tea Uglow - Designer
Tea Uglow leads part of Google's Creative Lab specializing in work with cultural organizations, artists, writers and producers on experiments using digital technology at the boundaries of traditional cultural practice.

Why you should listen

Tea Uglow has worked at Google for nearly 10 years, starting Google's Creative Lab in Europe and, since 2012, building a Creative Lab for the Asia Pacific region in Sydney, Australia. She works with cultural organizations and practitioners to enable artists, writers and performers to look at new ways in which we can use digital technology to augment traditional art, theatre and music. Uglow believes that by experimenting with digital tools at the creative core of culture we can transform existing cultural practice without losing the tradition, values and intangible qualities that make the arts so valuable.

Previous projects include Editions at Play (books), Hangouts in History (education), Dream40 (theatre, with the RSC), Build with Chrome (with LEGO), Web Lab (with London's Science Museum), Life in a Day (YouTube film with Ridley Scott) and the YouTube Symphony Orchestra (with the LSO). Uglow is proud of her early involvement in the Art Project (now Google's Cultural Institute).

Uglow speaks on innovation and digital futures around the world. At the time of her TEDxSydney talk (2015), Tea was still presenting as male and using her boy-name, which is Tom.

Uglow studied fine art at the Ruskin in Oxford before completing two further degrees in book arts and design management at UAL. She spent six years in art publishing and design management for charities as well as in various digital start-ups before joining Google in 2006. Prior to Google, Uglow worked for the Royal Academy of Arts, the Wellcome Trust, Random House and Christian Aid. She is on the board of the Biennale of Sydney (art) and formerly D&AD (design) and AWARD (advertising).

Uglow is also a very active and proud parent of two small boys. She lives in Sydney, Australia.

Good.

00:24
Now I'd like to you to mentally answer

00:37
I think we all know that our happy place
12
25760
1905
00:39
is meant to be
somewhere natural, outdoors --
13
27689
2791
00:42
on a beach, fireside.
14
30520
1599
00:44
We'll be reading or eating or knitting.
15
32159
3521
00:48
And we're surrounded
by natural light and organic elements.
16
36280
4360
00:52
Natural things make us happy.
17
40680
2600
00:55
And happiness is a great motivator;
we strive for happiness.
18
43320
3840
00:59
Perhaps that's why
we're always redesigning everything,
19
47200
2600
01:01
in the hopes that our solutions
might feel more natural.
20
49840
4680
01:06
So let's start there --
21
54880
1440
01:08
with the idea that good design
should feel natural.
22
56360
3400
01:12
Your phone is not very natural.
23
60800
3519
01:17
And you probably think
you're addicted to your phone,
24
65099
2477
01:19
but you're really not.
25
67600
1240
01:21
We're not addicted to devices,
26
69240
2040
01:23
we're addicted to the information
that flows through them.
27
71320
3080
01:26
I wonder how long you would be
happy in your happy place
28
74680
2960
01:29
without any information
from the outside world.
29
77680
3120
01:33
I'm interested in how we access
that information,
30
81520
2286
01:35
how we experience it.
31
83840
2000
01:37
We're moving from a time
of static information,
32
85880
4000
01:41
held in books and libraries and bus stops,
33
89920
2960
01:44
through a period of digital information,
34
92920
2240
01:47
towards a period of fluid information,
35
95200
2240
01:49
where your children will expect to be able
to access anything, anywhere at any time,
36
97480
6200
01:55
from quantum physics
to medieval viticulture,
37
103720
3880
01:59
from gender theory to tomorrow's weather,
38
107640
3840
02:03
just like switching on a lightbulb --
39
111520
2320
02:06
Imagine that.
40
114680
1400
02:08
Humans also like simple tools.
41
116120
2680
02:11
Your phone is not a very simple tool.
42
119320
3120
02:14
A fork is a simple tool.
43
122480
1640
02:16
(Laughter)
44
124160
1200
02:17
And we don't like them made of plastic,
45
125400
2799
02:20
in the same way I don't really like
my phone very much --
46
128240
2667
02:22
it's not how I want
to experience information.
47
130931
3600
02:27
I think there are better solutions
than a world mediated by screens.
48
135480
4080
02:31
I don't hate screens, but I don't feel --
49
139600
2400
02:34
and I don't think any of us feel that good
50
142040
2000

about how much time
we spend slouched over them.
51
144080
2640
02:40
Fortunately,
52

02:41
the big tech companies seem to agree.

03:11
And I think, actually,
that's already really happening.
63
179840
2840
03:15
Reality is richer than screens.
64
183720
4040
03:20
For example, I love books.
65
188640
2920
03:24
For me they are time machines --
atoms and molecules bound in space,
66
192120
5320
03:29
from the moment of their creation

03:33
But frankly,
68
201480
1520
03:35
the content's identical on my phone.
69
203040
2360
03:37
So what makes this
a richer experience than a screen?
70
205440
4320
03:41
I mean, scientifically.
71
209800
3600
03:45
We need screens, of course.
72
213440
1840
03:47
I'm going to show film,
I need the enormous screen.
73
215320
4320
03:52
But there's more than you can do
with these magic boxes.
74
220880
3520
03:56
Your phone is not
the Internet's door bitch.
75
224880
2760
03:59
(Laughter)
76

1200
04:00
We can build things --
physical things,
77
228920
2840
04:03
using physics and pixels,
78
231800
2480
04:06
that can integrate the Internet
into the world around us.
79
234320
2667
04:09
And I'm going to show you
a few examples of those.
80
237011
2520
04:14
A while ago, I got to work
with a design agency, Berg,
81
242480
2920
04:17
on an exploration of what the Internet
without screens might actually look like.
82
245440
4800
04:22
And they showed us a range ways
83
250280
2040
04:24
that light can work with simple senses
and physical objects

to really bring the Internet to life,
to make it tangible.
85
257320
4280
04:33
Like this wonderfully mechanical
YouTube player.
86
261640
4320
04:38
And this was an inspiration to me.
87
266560
2400
04:42
Next I worked with
the Japanese agency, AQ,
88

So, they became this very physical,

we're at the cardboard stage

And we hope to have something like this

07:01
So let's recap.
138
409600
1680
07:03
Humans like natural solutions.
139
411840

07:05
Humans love information.
140
413880

07:07
Humans need simple tools.
141
415960
2280
07:10
These principles should underpin
how we design for the future,
142
418640
4960
07:15
not just for the Internet.
143
423640
1880
07:18
You may feel uncomfortable about the age
of information that we're moving into.
144
426040
5640
07:23
You may feel challenged,
rather than simply excited.
145
431720
4440
07:28
Guess what? Me too.
146
436200
2000
07:30
It's a really extraordinary period
of human history.
147
438240
3840
07:35
We are the people
that actually build our world,
148
443840
3840
07:39
there are no artificial intelligences...
149
447720
2246
07:41
yet.
150
449991
1424
07:43
(Laughter)
151
451440
1880
07:45
It's us -- designers, architects,
artists, engineers.
152
453360
5400
07:50
And if we challenge ourselves,
153
458800
2480
07:53
I think that actually
we can have a happy place
154
461320
3920
07:57
filled with the information we love

2480

And although it may seem inevitable,
157
472640
