ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Melinda Gates - Philanthropist
Melinda French Gates is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, where she puts into practice the idea that every life has equal value.

Why you should listen

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation works to help all people lead healthy, productive lives. As co-chair, Melinda French Gates helps shape and approve strategies, review results, advocate for foundation issues and set the overall direction. In developing countries, the foundation focuses on improving people's health with vaccines and other life-saving tools and giving them a chance to lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, it seeks to dramatically improve education so that all young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Based in Seattle, Washington, the foundation is led by CEO Jeff Raikes and co-chair William H. Gates Sr., under the direction of Bill Gates, Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett.

In recent years, Melinda French Gates has become a vocal advocate for access to contraception, advancing the idea that empowering women to decide whether and when to have children can have transformational effects on societies. In 2012, Gates spearheaded the London Summit on Family Planning, with the goal of delivering contraceptives to 120 million women in developing countries by 2020. When asked why she got involved in this issue, Gates said, "We knew that 210 million women were saying they wanted access to the contraceptives we have here in the United States and we weren't providing them because of political controversy in our country. To me, that was just a crime. I kept looking around trying to find the person to get this back on the global stage. I realized I just had to do it."

01:08
Coca-Cola
21

Coke可樂 is everywhere到處.

In fact事實, when I travel旅行 to the developing發展 world世界,

we still have a lot to learn學習.

It's staggering踉蹌, if you think about Coca-Cola可口可樂.

01:58
So why does this matter?
42
103000
3000
02:01
Well, if we're going to speed速度 up the progress進展
43
106000
3000
02:04

02:09
we need to learn學習 from the innovators創新,
46
114000
2000
02:11
and those innovators創新
47
116000

I feel that, if we can understand

02:18
what makes品牌 something like Coca-Cola可口可樂 ubiquitous普及,
50
123000
3000
02:21
we can apply應用 those lessons教訓 then for the public上市 good.
51
126000
3000
02:28
because if we can analyze分析 it, learn學習 from it,
53
133000
3000
02:31
then we can save保存 lives生活.
54
136000
2000
02:33
So that's why I took a bit of time to study研究 Coke可樂.
55
138000
3000
02:37
And I think there are really three things
56
142000
2000
02:39
we can take away from Coca-Cola可口可樂.
57
144000
2000
02:41
They take real-time即時的 data數據
58
146000
2000
02:43
and immediately立即 feed飼料 it back into the product產品.
59
148000
3000
02:46
They tap龍頭 into local本地 entrepreneurial創業 talent天賦,
60
151000
3000
02:49
and they do incredible難以置信 marketing營銷.
61
154000
3000
02:52
So let's start開始 with the data數據.
62
157000
3000
02:55
Now Coke可樂 has a very clear明確 bottom底部 line --
63
160000
2000
02:57
they report報告 to a set of shareholders股東, they have to turn a profit利潤.
64
162000
3000
03:00
So they take the data數據,
65
165000
2000
03:02
and they use it to measure測量 progress進展.
66
167000
2000
03:04
They have this very continuous連續 feedback反饋 loop循環.
67
169000
2000
03:06
They learn學習 something, they put it back into the product產品,
68
171000
2000
03:08
they put it back into the market市場.
69
173000
2000
03:10
They have a whole整個 team球隊 called "Knowledge知識 and Insight眼光."
70
175000
2000
03:12
It's a lot like other consumer消費者 companies公司.
71
177000
2000
03:14
So if you're running賽跑 Namibia納米比亞 for Coca-Cola可口可樂,
72
179000
2000
03:16
and you have a 107 constituencies選區,
73
181000
2000
03:18
you know where every一切 can versus bottle瓶子
74
183000
3000
03:21
of Sprite雪碧, Fanta芬達 or Coke可樂 was sold出售,
75
186000
2000
03:23
whether是否 it was a corner store商店,
76
188000
2000
03:25
a supermarket超級市場 or a pushcart手推車.
77
190000
2000
03:27
So if sales銷售 start開始 to drop下降,
78
192000
2000
03:29
then the person can identify鑑定 the problem問題
79
194000
2000
03:31
and address地址 the issue問題.
80
196000
2000
03:34
Let's contrast對比 that for a minute分鐘 to development發展.
81
199000
3000
03:38
In development發展, the evaluation評測 comes
82
203000
3000
03:41
at the very end結束 of the project項目.
83
206000
3000
03:44
I've satSAT in a lot of those meetings會議,
84
209000
2000
03:46
and by then,
85
211000
2000
03:48
it is way too late晚了 to use the data數據.
86
213000
3000
03:51
I had somebody from an NGO
03:53
once一旦 describe描述 it to me as bowling保齡球 in the dark黑暗.
88
218000
2000
03:55
They said, "You roll the ball, you hear some pins go down.
89
220000
3000
03:58
It's dark黑暗, you can't see which哪一個 one goes down until直到 the lights燈火 come on,
90
223000
3000
04:01
and then you an see your impact碰撞."
91
226000
3000
04:06
turns on the lights燈火.
93
231000
3000
04:10
So what's the second第二 thing that Coke's可口可樂公司 good at?
94
235000
2000
04:12
They're good at tapping竊聽 into
95
237000
2000
04:14
that local本地 entrepreneurial創業 talent天賦.
96
239000
2000
04:16
Coke's可口可樂公司 been in Africa非洲 since以來 1928,
97
241000
2000
04:18
but most of the time they couldn't不能 reach達到 the distant遙遠 markets市場,
98
243000
3000
04:21
because they had a system系統 that was a lot like in the developed發達 world世界,
99
246000
3000
04:24
which哪一個 was a large truck卡車 rolling壓延 down the street.
100
249000
3000
04:27
And in Africa非洲, the remote遠程 places地方,
101
252000
2000
04:29
it's hard to find a good road.
102
254000
2000
04:31
But Coke可樂 noticed注意到 something --
103
256000
2000
04:33
they noticed注意到 that local本地 people were taking服用 the product產品, buying購買 it in bulk
104
258000
3000
04:36
and then reselling倒賣 it in these hard-to-reach難以到達的 places地方.
105
261000
3000
04:40
And so they took a bit of time to learn學習 about that.
106
265000
2000
04:42
And they decided決定 in 1990
107
267000
2000
04:44
that they wanted to start開始 training訓練 the local本地 entrepreneurs企業家,
108
269000
2000
04:46
giving them small loans貸款.
109
271000
2000
04:48
They set them up as what they called micro-distribution微分配 centers中心,
110
273000
3000
04:51
and those local本地 entrepreneurs企業家 then hire聘請 sales銷售 people,
111
276000
3000
04:54
who go out with bicycles自行車 and pushcarts手推車 and wheelbarrows手推車
112
279000
3000
04:57
to sell the product產品.
113
282000
2000
04:59
There are now some 3,000 of these centers中心
114
284000
2000
05:01
employing採用 about 15,000 people in Africa非洲.
115
286000
3000
05:05
In Tanzania坦桑尼亞 and Uganda烏干達,
116
290000
2000
05:07
they represent代表 90 percent百分
117
292000
2000
05:13
Let's look at the development發展 side.
119
298000
2000
05:15
What is it that governments政府 and NGOs非政府組織
120
300000
2000
05:17
can learn學習 from Coke可樂?
121
302000
2000
05:21
need to tap龍頭 into that local本地 entrepreneurial創業 talent天賦 as well,
123
306000
3000
05:24
because the locals當地人 know how to reach達到
124
309000
2000
05:26
the very hard-to-serve難以服 places地方, their neighbors鄰居,
125
311000
3000
05:29
and they know what motivates能夠激勵 them to make change更改.
126
314000
3000
05:33
I think a great example of this
127
318000
2000
05:35
is Ethiopia's埃塞俄比亞 new health健康 extension延期 program程序.
128
320000
3000
05:38
The government政府 noticed注意到 in Ethiopia埃塞俄比亞
129
323000
2000
05:40
that many許多 of the people were so far away from a health健康 clinic診所,
130
325000
3000
05:43
they were over a day's travel旅行 away from a health健康 clinic診所.
131
328000
3000
05:46
So if you're in an emergency situation情況 -- or if you're a mom媽媽 about to deliver交付 a baby寶寶 --
132
331000
3000
05:49
forget忘記 it, to get to the health健康 care關心 center中央.
133
334000
3000
05:52
They decided決定 that wasn't good enough足夠,
134
337000
2000
05:54
so they went to India印度 and studied研究 the Indian印度人 state of Kerala喀拉拉邦
135
339000
2000
05:56
that also had a system系統 like this,
136
341000
2000
05:58
and they adapted適應 it for Ethiopia埃塞俄比亞.
137
343000
2000

And I think we make a fundamental基本的 mistake錯誤 --
227
586000
2000
10:03
we make an assumption假設,
228
588000
2000
10:05
that we think that, if people need something,

2000
10:07
we don't have to make them want that.

You start開始 to talk to them about why open打開 defecation排便

I think, is one of the most powerful強大 examples例子.
288
739000
3000
12:38
We've我們已經 seen看到 a 99 percent百分 reduction減少 in polio脊髓灰質炎 in 20 years年份.
289
743000
4000
12:42
So if you look back to 1988,
290
747000
2000
12:44
there are about 350,000 cases of polio脊髓灰質炎
291
749000
3000
12:47
on the planet行星 that year.
292
752000
2000
12:49
In 2009, we're down to 1,600 cases.
293
754000
3000
12:52
Well how did that happen發生?
294
757000
3000
12:55
Let's look at a country國家 like India印度.
295
760000
2000
12:57
They have over a billion十億 people in this country國家,
296
762000
3000
13:00
but they have 35,000 local本地 doctors醫生
297
765000
3000
13:03
who report報告 paralysis麻痺,
298
768000
2000
13:05
and clinicians臨床醫生, a huge巨大 reporting報告 system系統 in chemists化學家.
299
770000
3000
13:08
They have two and a half million百萬 vaccinators接種.
300
773000
3000
13:12
But let me make the story故事 a little bit more concrete具體 for you.
301
777000
2000
13:14
Let me tell you the story故事 of Shriram施拉姆,
302
779000
2000
13:16
an 18 month boy男孩 in Bihar比哈爾邦,
303
781000
2000
13:18
a northern北方 state in India印度.
304
783000
2000
13:20
This year on August八月 8th, he felt paralysis麻痺
305
785000
3000
13:23
and on the 13th, his parents父母 took him to the doctor醫生.
306
788000
3000
13:27
On August八月 14th and 15th, they took a stool糞便 sample樣品,
307
792000
2000
13:29
and by the 25th of August八月,
308
794000
2000
13:31
it was confirmed確認 he had Type類型 1 polio脊髓灰質炎.
309
796000
3000
13:34
By August八月 30th, a genetic遺傳 test測試 was doneDONE,
310
799000
3000
13:37
and we knew知道 what strain應變 of polio脊髓灰質炎 Shriram施拉姆 had.
311
802000
3000
13:40
Now it could have come from one of two places地方.
312
805000
2000
13:42
It could have come from Nepal尼泊爾, just to the north, across橫過 the border邊境,
313
807000
3000
13:45
or from Jharkhand恰爾肯德邦, a state just to the south.
314
810000
3000
13:48
Luckily, the genetic遺傳 testing測試 proved證實
315
813000
3000
13:51
that, in fact事實, this strand came來了 north,
316
816000
2000
13:53
because, had it come from the south,
317
818000
2000
13:55
it would have had a much wider更寬的 impact碰撞 in terms條款 of transmission傳輸.
318
820000
2000
13:57
So many許多 more people would have been affected受影響.
319
822000
2000
13:59
So what's the endgame
14:01
Well on September九月 4th, there was a huge巨大 mop-up掃尾 campaign運動,
321
826000
3000
14:04
which哪一個 is what you do in polio脊髓灰質炎.
322
829000
2000
14:06
They went out and where Shriram施拉姆 lives生活,
323
831000
2000
14:08
they vaccinated接種疫苗 two million百萬 people.
324
833000
2000
14:10
So in less than a month,
325
835000
2000
14:12
we went from one case案件 of paralysis麻痺
326
837000
2000
14:14
to a targeted針對 vaccination疫苗接種 program程序.
327
839000
3000
14:17
And I'm happy快樂 to say only one other person in that area got polio脊髓灰質炎.
328
842000
3000
14:20
That's how you keep
329
845000
2000
14:22
a huge巨大 outbreak暴發 from spreading傳播,
330
847000
2000
14:24
and it shows節目 what can happen發生
331
849000
2000
14:26
when local本地 people have the data數據 in their hands;
332
851000
3000
14:29
they can save保存 lives生活.
333
854000
3000
14:32
Now one of the challenges挑戰 in polio脊髓灰質炎, still, is marketing營銷,
334
857000
3000
14:35
but it might威力 not be what you think.
335
860000
2000
14:37
It's not the marketing營銷 on the ground地面.
336
862000
2000
14:39
It's not telling告訴 the parents父母,
337
864000
2000
14:41
"If you see paralysis麻痺, take your child兒童 to the doctor醫生
338
866000
2000
14:43
or get your child兒童 vaccinated接種疫苗."
339
868000
2000
14:45
We have a problem問題 with marketing營銷 in the donor捐贈者 community社區.
340
870000
3000
14:48
The G8 nations國家 have been incredibly令人難以置信 generous慷慨 on polio脊髓灰質炎
341
873000
2000
14:50
over the last 20 years年份,
342
875000
2000
14:52
but we're starting開始 to have something called polio脊髓灰質炎 fatigue疲勞
343
877000
3000
14:55
and that is that the donor捐贈者 nations國家
344
880000
2000
14:57
aren't willing願意 to fund基金 polio脊髓灰質炎 any longer.
345
882000
2000
14:59
So by next下一個 summer夏季, we're sighted短視 to run out of money on polio脊髓灰質炎.
346
884000
3000
15:02
So we are 99 percent百分
347
887000
3000
15:05
of the way there on this goal目標
348
890000
2000
15:07
and we're about to run short of money.
349
892000
3000
15:10
And I think that if the marketing營銷 were more aspirational抱負,
350
895000
3000
15:13
if we could focus焦點 as a community社區
351
898000
2000
15:15
on how far we've我們已經 come
352
900000
2000
15:17
and how amazing驚人 it would be
353
902000
2000
15:19
to eradicate根除 this disease疾病,
354
904000
2000
15:21
we could put polio脊髓灰質炎 fatigue疲勞
355
906000
2000
15:23
and polio脊髓灰質炎 behind背後 us.
356
908000
2000
15:25
And if we could do that,
357
910000
2000
15:27
we could stop vaccinating接種疫苗 everybody每個人, worldwide全世界,
358
912000
2000
15:29
in all of our countries國家 for polio脊髓灰質炎.
359
914000
3000
15:32
And it would only be the second第二 disease疾病 ever
360
917000
2000
15:34
wiped off the face面對 of the planet行星.
361
919000
3000
15:37
And we are so close.
362
922000
2000
15:39
And this victory勝利 is so possible可能.
363
924000
3000
15:43
So if Coke's可口可樂公司 marketers營銷 came來了 to me
364
928000
3000
15:46
and asked me to define確定 happiness幸福,
365
931000
3000
15:50
I'd say my vision視力 of happiness幸福
366
935000
2000
15:52
is a mother母親 holding保持 healthy健康 baby寶寶
367
937000
3000
15:55
in her arms武器.
368
940000
2000
15:57
To me, that is deep happiness
369
942000
3000
16:02
And so if we can learn學習 lessons教訓 from the innovators創新 in every一切 sector扇形,
370
947000
3000
16:05
then in the future未來 we make together一起,
371
950000
3000
16:08
that happiness幸福
372
953000
2000
16:10
can be just as ubiquitous普及
373
955000
2000
16:14
Thank you.
375
