ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Elizabeth Gilbert - Writer
The author of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' Elizabeth Gilbert has thought long and hard about some big topics. Her fascinations: genius, creativity and how we get in our own way when it comes to both.

Why you should listen

Elizabeth Gilbert faced down a premidlife crisis by doing what we all secretly dream of -- running off for a year. Her travels through Italy, India and Indonesia resulted in the megabestselling and deeply beloved memoir Eat, Pray, Love, about her process of finding herself by leaving home.

She's a longtime magazine writer -- covering music and politics for Spin and GQ -- as well as a novelist and short-story writer. Her books include the story collection Pilgrims, the novel Stern Men (about lobster fishermen in Maine) and a biography of the woodsman Eustace Conway, called The Last American Man. Her work has been the basis for two movies so far (Coyote Ugly, based on her own tale of working at the famously raunchy bar in New York City), and Eat, Pray, Love, with the part of Gilbert played by Julia Roberts. Not bad for a year off.

In 2010, Elizabeth published Committed, a memoir exploring her ambivalent feelings about the institution of marriage. And her 2013 novel, The Signature of All Things, is "a sprawling tale of 19th century botanical exploration."

Gilbert also owns and runs the import shop Two Buttons in Frenchtown, New Jersey.

Elizabeth Gilbert: Your elusive creative genius

Elizabeth Gilbert govori o njegovanju kreativnosti

Filmed:

Duhovit, duboko osoban i iznenađujuće dirljiv govor.

I had this encountersusret recentlynedavno where I metsastali the extraordinaryizvanredan AmericanAmerički poetpjesnik RuthRuth StoneKamena,

Nedavno sam imala priliku sresti izvanrednu američku pjesnikinju Ruth Stone.
10:18
who'stko je now in her 90s, but she's been a poetpjesnik her entirečitav life
190
605246

Ušla je u devedesete i cijeloga je života pjesnikinja.
10:20
and she told me that when she was growingrastući up in ruralruralna VirginiaVirginia,
191
608081
3230
Ispričala mi je kako je odrastajući u ruralnom dijelu Virginije
10:24
she would be out workingrad in the fieldspolja,
192
611311
1601
često radila u polju.
10:25
and she said she would feel and hearčuti a poempjesma
193
612912
3157
Osjetila bi i čula pjesmu
10:28
comingdolazak at her from over the landscapepejzaž.
194
616069
2007
kako joj dolazi u susret s druge strane horizonta.
10:30
And she said it was like a thunderousburnim trainvlak of airzrak.
195
618076
3157
10:34
And it would come barrelingbarreling down at her over the landscapepejzaž.
196
621233
2328
10:36
And she feltosjećala it comingdolazak, because it would shaketresti the earthZemlja underpod her feetnoge.
197
623561
3602
10:39
She knewznao that she had only one thing to do at that pointtočka,
198
627163
3099
10:43
and that was to, in her wordsriječi, "runtrčanje like hellpakao."
199
630262
2151
10:45
And she would runtrčanje like hellpakao to the housekuća
200
632413
1732
I tako bi mahnito trčala prema kući
10:46
and she would be gettinguzimajući chasedotjerao by this poempjesma,
201
634145
1686
dok ju je pjesma gonila
10:48
and the wholečitav dealdogovor was that she had to get to a piecekomad of paperpapir and a pencilolovka
202
635831
3130
jer valjalo je zgrabiti papir i olovku dovoljno brzo
10:51
fastbrzo enoughdovoljno so that when it thunderedgrmio throughkroz her, she could collectprikupiti it
203
638961
3068
da stigne uhvatiti pjesmu dok tutnji kroz nju,
10:54
and grabzgrabiti it on the pagestranica.
204
642029
1501
da bi je prenijela na papir.
10:56
And other timesputa she wouldn'tne bi be fastbrzo enoughdovoljno,
205
643530
1955
10:58
so she'dBila be runningtrčanje and runningtrčanje and runningtrčanje, and she wouldn'tne bi get to the housekuća
206
645485
3327
11:01
and the poempjesma would barrelbarel throughkroz her and she would misspropustiti it
207
648812
2838
pjesma bi samo projurila kroz nju, neuhvaćena.
11:04
and she said it would continuenastaviti on acrosspreko the landscapepejzaž,
208
651650
2288
Tada bi se nastavila kotrljati niz polja
11:06
looking, as she put it "for anotherjoš poetpjesnik."
209
653938
2964
tražeći, kako Ruth kaže, "nekog drugog pjesnika".
11:09
And then there were these timesputa --
210
656902
2370
A ponekad bi
11:12
this is the piecekomad I never forgotzaboravio --
211
659272
2379
- ovaj dio priče neću nikada zaboraviti -
11:14
she said that there were momentstrenutke where she would almostskoro misspropustiti it, right?
212
661651
3199
11:17
So, she's runningtrčanje to the housekuća and she's looking for the paperpapir
213
664850
2351
Dok bi trčala kući, tražeći komad papira
11:20
and the poempjesma passesprolazi throughkroz her,
214
667201
2100
a pjesma bi kroz nju tutnjala,
11:22
and she grabsZgrabi a pencilolovka just as it's going throughkroz her,
215
669301
2934
ugrabila bi olovku baš u trenutku kad bi pjesma kroz nju prošla
11:25
and then she said, it was like she would reachdohvatiti out with her other handruka
216
672235
2568
11:27
and she would catchulov it.
217
674803
1707
da ju uhvati.
11:29
She would catchulov the poempjesma by its tailrep,
218
676510
2281
Tako bi uhvatila pjesmu za rep
11:31
and she would pullVuci it backwardsunazad into her bodytijelo
219
678791
2778
i povukla je natraške u svoje tijelo
11:34
as she was transcribingprepisivanje on the pagestranica.
220
681569
1860
dok bi ju zapisivala na stranicu.
11:36
And in these instancesslučajevi, the poempjesma would come up on the pagestranica perfectsavršen and intactnetaknut
221
683429
4855
11:41
but backwardsunazad, from the last wordriječ to the first.
222
688284

Ma ne. Moje stvaralaštvo nije takvo - ja nisam cjevovod!

I'm a mulemula, and the way that I have to work

But even I, in my mulishnessmulishness,

even I have brushedČetka up againstprotiv that thing, at timesputa.
