ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Susan Cain - Quiet revolutionary
Our world prizes extroverts—but Susan Cain makes a case for the quiet and contemplative. She reaches millions of people through her books, podcasts and her mission-based organization, Quiet Revolution, which empowers introverts for the benefit of everyone.

Why you should listen

Susan Cain is a former corporate lawyer and negotiations consultant -- and a self-described introvert. At least one-third of the people we know are introverts, notes Cain in her book QUIET: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking. Although our culture undervalues them dramatically, introverts have made some of the great contributions to society -- from Chopin's nocturnes to the invention of the personal computer to Ghandi's transformative leadership. Cain argues that we design our schools, workplaces and religious institutions for extroverts, and that this bias creates a waste of talent, energy and happiness. Based on intensive research in psychology and neurobiology and on prolific interviews, she also explains why introverts are capable of great love and great achievement, not in spite of their temperament -- but because of them.

In 2015 Susan Cain announced the launch of her mission-based organization Quiet Revolution that aims to change the lives of introverts by empowering them with the information, tools and resources they need to survive and thrive.

In the workplace, companies are not fully harnessing the talents of their introverted employees and leadership teams are often imbalanced with many more extroverts than introverts. The Quiet Leadership Institute has worked with companies from LinkedIn to GE to Procter and Gamble to help them achieve their potential by providing learning experiences that unlock the power of introverts.

At the heart and center of the Quiet Revolution is empowering the next generation of children to know their own strengths and be freed from the sense of inadequacy that has shadowed the children of previous generations. Susan's second book, Quiet Power, is written for teens and young adults but also serves as a tool for teachers and parents. In addition, Susan has created a portal and a online learning experience for the parents of quiet children and has also established the Quiet Schools Network. Susan's podcast, Quiet: The Power of Introverts debuted in February 2016 as a 10-part series designed to give parents and teachers the tools they need to empower quiet kids.

Susan and the Quiet Revolution have received numerous accolades and press including Fortune magazine, The New York Times, NPRand many more.

I could have told you 50 othersdrugi just like it --

02:40

kako moj tihi i introvertirani način postojanja
02:46
was not necessarilyobavezno the right way to go,
62
151000
2000
nije nužno ispravni način,
02:48
that I should be tryingtežak to passproći as more of an extrovertotvorena osoba.
63
153000
3000
kako bismo se trebali truditi biti ekstrovertni.
02:51
And I always sensedosjetio deepduboko down that this was wrongpogrešno
64
156000
3000
I oduvijek sam duboko u sebi osjećala da je to pogrešno,
02:54
and that introvertsintroverti were prettyprilično excellentodličan just as they were.
65
159000
2000
kako su i introverti izvrsni baš takvi kakvi jesu.
02:56
But for yearsgodina I deniedodbijen this intuitionintuicija,
66
161000
3000
Godinama sam nijekala tu intuiciju
02:59
and so I becamepostao a WallZid StreetUlica lawyerodvjetnik, of all things,
67
164000
3000
i tako sam od svih stvari postala odvjetnik na Wall Streetu,
03:02
insteadumjesto of the writerpisac that I had always longedgorljivo to be --
68
167000
3000
umjesto pisca, što sam oduvijek željela postati.
03:05
partlydjelimično because I neededpotreban to provedokazati to myselfsebe
69
170000
2000
Dijelom zbog toga jer sam morala dokazati samoj sebi

that I could be boldodvažan and assertivedeklarativan too.
70
172000

03:09
And I was always going off to crowdedprometan barsbarovi
71
174000
2000
I tako sam odlazila u prenapučene barove,
03:11
when I really would have preferredpoželjna to just have a nicelijepo dinnervečera with friendsprijatelji.
72
176000
3000
iako sam radije htjela otići na finu večeru s prijateljima.
03:14
And I madenapravljen these self-negatingSelf-negirajući choicesizbori
73
179000
3000
Donosila sam te izbore koji su se kosili sa mnom
03:17
so reflexivelyrefleksivno,
74
182000
2000
tako refleksno,
03:19
that I wasn'tnije even awaresvjestan that I was makingizrađivanje them.
75
184000
3000
da čak nisam bila ni svjesna da ih činim.
03:22
Now this is what manymnogi introvertsintroverti do,
76
187000
2000
To je ono što mnogi introverti čine,
03:24
and it's our lossgubitak for sure,
77
189000
2000
i zasigurno je to naš gubitak,
03:26
but it is alsotakođer our colleagues'kolege lossgubitak
78
191000
2000
ali i gubitak naših kolega,
03:28
and our communities'zajednica lossgubitak.
79
193000
2000
naše zajednice.
03:30
And at the riskrizik of soundingzvučni grandiosegrandiozan, it is the world'ssvijetu lossgubitak.
80
195000
3000
I uz rizik da ću zvučati grandiozno, gubitak svijeta.
03:33
Because when it comesdolazi to creativitykreativnost and to leadershiprukovodstvo,
81
198000
3000
Jer, kada se radi o kreativnosti, o vodstvu,
03:36
we need introvertsintroverti doing what they do bestnajbolje.
82
201000
3000
potrebno nam je da introverti rade ono u čemu su najbolji.
03:39
A thirdtreći to a halfpola of the populationpopulacija are introvertsintroverti --
83
204000
2000
Trećina do polovina populacije su introverti.
03:41
a thirdtreći to a halfpola.
84
206000
2000
Trećina do polovina!
03:43
So that's one out of everysvaki two or threetri people you know.
85
208000
3000
To je svaka druga ili treća osoba koju poznajete.
03:46
So even if you're an extrovertotvorena osoba yourselfsami,
86
211000
3000
Pa čak i ako ste vi sami ekstroverti,
03:49
I'm talkingkoji govori about your coworkerssuradnici

03:56
all of them subjectpredmet to this biasprednapon
90
221000
2000
Svi su oni podvrgnuti toj pristranosti
03:58
that is prettyprilično deepduboko and realstvaran in our societydruštvo.
91
223000
2000
koja je duboko u našem društvu.
04:00
We all internalizeinternaliziraju it from a very earlyrano agedob
92
225000
3000
I svi je usvajamo u vrlo ranom razdoblju
04:03
withoutbez even havingima a languagejezik for what we're doing.
93
228000
3000
dok još ni ne poznajemo jezik kojim bismo opisali ono što radimo.
04:06
Now to see the biasprednapon clearlyjasno
94
231000
2000
Kako bi ta pristranost bila jasnija
04:08
you need to understandrazumjeti what introversionintroversion is.
95
233000
3000
nužno je najprije razumjeti što je to sama introvertiranost.
04:11
It's differentdrugačiji from beingbiće shystidljiv.
96
236000
2000
Drugačija je od stidljivosti.
04:13
ShynessLijenost is about fearstrah of socialsocijalni judgmentpresuda.
97
238000
2000
Stidljivost je strah od društvenog osuđivanja.
04:15
IntroversionIntroversion is more about,
98
240000
2000
Introvertiranost je više način
04:17
how do you respondodgovarati to stimulationstimulacija,
99
242000
2000
kako odgovarate na podražaje,
04:19
includinguključujući socialsocijalni stimulationstimulacija.
100
244000
2000
uključujući društvene podražaje.
04:21
So extrovertsextroverts really cravežudjeti largeveliki amountsiznosi of stimulationstimulacija,
101
246000
3000
Ekstroverti zapravo žude za velikim količinama podražaja,
04:24
whereasdok introvertsintroverti feel at theirnjihov mostnajviše aliveživ
102
249000
2000
ali introverti se osjećaju najviše živima,

103
251000
2000
najviše pobuđenima, najviše sposobnima
04:28
when they're in quietertiši, more low-keynisko-ključ environmentsokruženja.
104
253000
2000
kada su u tišim, mirnijim okruženjima.
04:30
Not all the time -- these things aren'tnisu absoluteapsolutan --
105
255000
2000
Ali ne cijelo vrijeme, ove stvari nisu konačne,
04:32
but a lot of the time.
106
257000
2000
ali većinu vremena.
04:34
So the keyključ then
107
259000
2000
Ključno je dakle
04:36
to maximizingMaksimiziranje our talentstalenti
108
261000
3000
naći se u zoni podražavanja
04:39
is for us all to put ourselvessebe
109
264000

04:41
in the zonezona of stimulationstimulacija that is right for us.
110
266000
3000
kako bismo najviše ostvarili svoje talente.
04:44
But now here'sevo where the biasprednapon comesdolazi in.
111
269000
2000
Ovo je dio gdje dolazi do pristranosti.
04:46
Our mostnajviše importantvažno institutionsinstitucije,

Naše najvažnije ustanove,

2000
naše škole i radna mjesta,
04:50
they are designedkonstruiran mostlyuglavnom for extrovertsextroverts
114
275000
2000
prilagođene su mahom ekstrovertima
04:52
and for extroverts'extroverts' need for lots of stimulationstimulacija.
115
277000
3000
i potrebama ekstroverta za mnoštvom podražaja.
04:55
And alsotakođer we have this beliefvjerovanje systemsistem right now
116
280000
4000
Također trenutno imamo sustav vjerovanja
04:59
that I call the newnovi groupthinkgroupthink,
117
284000
2000
koji nazivam novim grupnim razmišljanjem,
05:01
whichkoji holdsdrži that all creativitykreativnost and all productivityproduktivnost

But here'sevo the thing about my grandfatherdeda.
352
872000
3000
Ali postoji jedna stvar o mom djedu.
14:50
UnderneathIspod this ceremonialSvečana roleuloga,
353
875000
2000
Ispod svoje svečane uloge,
14:52
he was really modestskroman and really introvertedintrovertiran --
354
877000
3000
bio je zaista skroman i introvertiran,
14:55
so much so that when he deliveredisporučena these sermonspropovijedi,
355
880000
3000
toliko da, kada je propovijedao,
14:58
he had troublenevolja makingizrađivanje eyeoko contactkontakt
356
883000
2000
imao je problem ostvariti kontakt očima
15:00
with the very sameisti congregationKongregacija
357
885000

s tom istom kongregacijom
15:02
that he had been speakinggovor to for 62 yearsgodina.
358
887000
2000
kojoj je govorio 62 godine.
15:04
And even away from the podiumpodijum,
359
889000
2000
I izvan govornice,
15:06
when you calledzvao him to say hellozdravo,
360
891000
2000
kada ste ga nazvali kako biste ga pozdravili
15:08
he would oftenčesto endkraj the conversationrazgovor prematurelyprerano
361
893000
2000
često bi preuranjeno prekinuo razgovor
15:10
for fearstrah that he was takinguzimanje up too much of your time.
362
895000
4000
iz straha da zauzima previše vašeg vremena.
15:14
But when he diedumro at the agedob of 94,
363
899000
3000
Ali kada je umro u 94. godini
15:17
the policepolicija had to closeblizu down the streetsulice of his neighborhoodsusjedstvo
364
902000
3000
policija je morala zatvoriti ulice u njegovom susjedstvu
15:20
to accommodatesmjestiti the crowdgužva of people
365

15:26
And so these daysdana I try to learnnaučiti from my grandfather'sDjed je exampleprimjer
367
911000
3000
I tako ovih dana pokušavam učiti iz primjera svog djeda

368
914000

na vlastiti način.
15:31
So I just publishedObjavljeno a bookrezervirati about introversionintroversion,

Objavila sam knjigu o introvertnosti,
15:34
and it tookuzeo me about sevensedam yearsgodina to writepisati.
370
919000

trebalo mi je sedam godina da ju napišem.
15:36
And for me, that sevensedam yearsgodina was like totalukupno blissblaženstvo,
371
921000
3000
Za mene je tih sedam godina bio pravi blagoslov
15:39
because I was readingčitanje, I was writingpisanje,
372
924000

jer sam čitala, pisala,
15:42
I was thinkingmišljenje, I was researchingistraživanje.
373
927000
2000
razmišljala, istraživala.
15:44
It was my versionverzija

375
931000
3000

15:49
But now all of a suddennaglo my jobposao is very differentdrugačiji,
376
934000
3000
Ali sada odjednom, moj posao je puno drugačiji,
15:52
and my jobposao is to be out here talkingkoji govori about it,
377
937000
3000
moj posao je biti ovdje i govoriti o tome.
15:55
talkingkoji govori about introversionintroversion.
378
940000
3000
Govoriti o introvertiranosti.
15:58
(LaughterSmijeh)
379
943000

16:02
And that's a lot harderteže for me,
380

I to mi je puno teže
16:04
because as honoredčast mi je as I am
381
949000

jer koliko god da sam počašćena
16:06

383
