ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Laura Vanderkam - Author
Laura Vanderkam shatters the myth that there just isn’t enough time in the week for working professionals to live happy, balanced and productive lives.

Why you should listen

Between careers and kids, many women feel that they are too busy to cram in anything else. To test the truth of this feeling, author Laura Vanderkam began logging her time for each of the 168 hours of the week. Among her surprising findings: we retroactively overestimate the amount of time spent stressing about work while underestimating our available downtime.

In her latest book, I Know How She Does It, Vanderkam analyzes the ways in which professional women successfully balance free time and work -- and explores how everyday readers can benefit from their experiences.

02:32
goes out on a Wednesday星期三 night
for something.
54
140213
2063
02:34
She comes home to find
that her water heater加热器 has broken破碎,
55
142300
2629
02:36
and there is now water
all over her basement地下室.
56
144953

02:40
If you've ever had anything
like this happen发生 to you,
57
148380
2454

02:42
you know it is a hugely巨大 damaging有害,

02:45
So she's dealing交易 with the immediate即时
aftermath后果 that night,
59
153762
2710
02:48
next下一个 day she's got plumbers管道工 coming未来 in,
60
156496
1877
02:50
day after that, professional专业的 cleaning清洁的
crew船员 dealing交易 with the ruined毁了 carpet地毯.
61
158397
3500
02:53
All this is being存在 recorded记录
on her time log日志.
62
161921
2066
02:56
Winds up taking服用 seven hours小时 of her week.
63
164011
2300
02:59
Seven hours小时.
64
167191
1282
03:01
That's like finding发现
an extra额外 hour小时 in the day.
65
169179
2802
03:04
But I'm sure if you had asked her
at the start开始 of the week,
66
172834
2794
“你能在这周抽出七个小时
来参加铁人三项吗?”,
03:07
"Could you find seven hours小时
to train培养 for a triathlon铁人三项?"
67
175652
3218
“你能在这周抽出七个小时
指导七个有潜力的人吗?“
03:11
"Could you find seven hours小时
to mentor导师 seven worthy值得 people?"
68
179893
3805
03:15
I'm sure she would've会一直 said
what most of us would've会一直 said,
69
183722
2691
03:18
which哪一个 is, "No -- can't you see
how busy I am?"
70
186437
4444
03:23
Yet然而 when she had to find seven hours小时
71
191521
1797
03:25
because there is water
all over her basement地下室,
72
193342
2799
03:28
she found发现 seven hours小时.
73
196165
2510
03:31
And what this shows节目 us
is that time is highly高度 elastic.
74
199055
4151
03:35
We cannot不能 make more time,
75
203594
2043
03:37
but time will stretch伸展 to accommodate容纳
what we choose选择 to put into it.
76
205661
4179
03:42
And so the key to time management管理
77
210366
2567
03:45
is treating治疗 our priorities优先
78
213541
2235
03:47
as the equivalent当量
of that broken破碎 water heater加热器.
79
215800
3047
03:52
To get at this,
80
220162
1150
03:53
I like to use language语言 from one
of the busiest最繁忙 people I ever interviewed采访.
81
221336
3445
03:56
By busy, I mean she was running

04:00
she had six children孩子 in her spare备用 time.
84
228610

04:02
I was getting得到 in touch触摸 with her
to set up an interview访问
85
230657
2618
04:05
on how she "had it all" -- that phrase短语.
86
233299
2496
04:07
I remember记得 it was a Thursday星期四 morning早上,
87
235819
1809
04:09
and she was not available可得到
to speak说话 with me.
88
237652
2007
04:11
Of course课程, right?
89
239683
1156
04:12
But the reason原因 she was
unavailable不可用 to speak说话 with me
90
240863
2419
04:15
is that she was out for a hike远足,
91
243306
1940
04:17
because it was a beautiful美丽 spring弹簧 morning早上,
92
245270
2038
04:19
and she wanted to go for a hike远足.
93
247332
1563
04:20
So of course课程 this makes品牌 me
even more intrigued好奇,
94
248919
2337
04:23
and when I finally最后 do catch抓住 up with her,
she explains说明 it like this.
95
251280
3176
04:26
She says, "Listen Laura劳拉, everything I do,
96

2267
I spend, is my choice选择."
97
257592
3613
04:33
And rather than say,
98
261830
1151
04:35
"I don't have time to do x, y or z,"
99
263005

04:37
she'd say, "I don't do x, y or z
because it's not a priority优先."
100
265893
5114
“我没有时间”的意思通常是
”那不是我的首要任务”。
04:43
"I don't have time," often经常 means手段
"It's not a priority优先."
101
271709
4368
04:49
If you think about it,
that's really more accurate准确 language语言.
102
277075
2888
04:51
I could tell you I don't have time
to dust灰尘 my blinds百叶窗,
103
279987
2564
04:54
but that's not true真正.
104
282575
1169
04:55
If you offered提供 to pay工资 me $100,000
to dust灰尘 my blinds百叶窗,
105
283768
2440
04:58
I would get to it pretty漂亮 quickly很快.

1016
05:00
Since以来 that is not going to happen发生,
108
288896
1635
05:02
I can acknowledge确认 this is not
a matter of lacking不足 time;
109
290555
2604
05:05
it's that I don't want to do it.
110
293183
1601
05:06
Using运用 this language语言 reminds提醒 us
that time is a choice选择.
111
294808
3386
05:10
And granted
05:11
there may可能 be horrible可怕 consequences后果
for making制造 different不同 choices选择,
113
299415
3032
05:14
I will give you that.
114
302471
1206
05:15
But we are smart聪明 people,
115
303701
1622
05:17
and certainly当然 over the long run,
116
305347
1858
05:19
we have the power功率 to fill our lives生活
117
307229
2000
05:21
with the things that deserve值得 to be there.
118
309253
2676
05:25
So how do we do that?
119
313204
1288
05:27
How do we treat对待 our priorities优先
120
315127
1432
05:28
as the equivalent当量
of that broken破碎 water heater加热器?
121
316583
2331
05:31
Well, first we need
to figure数字 out what they are.
122
319531
2319
05:33
I want to give you two strategies策略

123
321874
2754
05:36
The first, on the professional专业的 side:
124
324652
1758
05:38
I'm sure many许多 people
coming未来 up to the end结束 of the year
125
326434
2511
05:40
are giving or getting得到

126
328969
2323
05:43
You look back over

128
333605
2045
05:47
And this serves供应 its purpose目的,
129

05:50

05:53
So I want you to pretend假装
