163 people across横过 four separate分离 tests测试 --

01:54
everyone大家 wrote down their personal个人 goal目标.
41
99000
3000
01:57
Then half of them announced公布 their commitment承诺 to this goal目标 to the room房间,
42

3000
02:00
and half didn't.
43
105000
2000
02:02
Then everyone大家 was given特定 45 minutes分钟 of work
44
107000
2000
02:04
that would directly lead them towards their goal目标,
45
109000
3000
02:07
but they were told that they could stop at any time.
46
112000
2000
02:09
Now, those who kept不停 their mouths嘴巴 shut关闭
47
114000
2000
02:11
worked工作 the entire整个 45 minutes分钟, on average平均,
48

02:14
and when asked afterwards之后,
49
119000
2000
02:16
said that they felt that they had a long way to go still to achieve实现 their goal目标.
50
121000
3000
02:19
But those who had announced公布 it
51
124000
2000
02:21
quit放弃 after only 33 minutes分钟, on average平均,
52
126000
3000
02:24
and when asked afterwards之后,

2000
02:26
said that they felt much closer接近 to achieving实现 their goal目标.
54
131000
2000
02:28
So, if this is true真正,
55
133000
2000
02:30
what can we do?
56
135000
2000
02:32
Well, you could resist the temptation
57
137000
2000
02:34
to announce宣布 your goal目标.
58
139000
2000
02:36
You can delay延迟 the gratification享乐
59
141000
2000
02:38
that the social社会 acknowledgement承认 brings带来,
60
143000
2000
02:40
and you can understand理解 that your mind心神
61
145000
2000
02:42
mistakes错误 the talking for the doing.
62
147000
3000
02:45
But if you do need to talk about something,
63
150000
2000
02:47
you can state it in a way
64
152000
2000
02:49
that gives you no satisfaction满意,
65
154000
2000
02:51
such这样 as, "I really want to run this marathon马拉松,
66
156000
2000
02:53
so I need to train培养 five times a week
67
158000
2000
02:55
and kick my ass屁股 if I don't, okay?"
68
160000
3000
02:58
So audience听众, next下一个 time you're tempted动心 to tell someone有人 your goal目标,
69
163000
3000
03:01
what will you say? (Silence安静)
70
166000
2000
03:03
Exactly究竟, well doneDONE.
71
