00:17
of your biggest personal goal.
1
2000
3000
em seus maiores objetivos pessoais.
De verdade. Pensem por um segundo
Precisam sentir para aprender.
00:20
For real -- you can take a second. You've got to feel this to learn it.

00:23
Take a few seconds and think of your personal biggest goal, okay?
3

3000
Levem alguns segundos e pensem
em seu maior objetivo pessoal.
00:26
Imagine deciding right now
4
11000
2000
Imaginem que estão decidindo agora mesmo
00:28
that you're going to do it.
5
13000

que vão realizá-lo.
00:30
Imagine telling someone that you meet today what you're going to do.
6

Imaginem que contarão
a alguém hoje o que farão.
00:33
Imagine their congratulations
7
18000
2000
Imaginem os elogios deles
00:35
and their high image of you.
8
20000
2000
e a boa impressão que terão de vocês.
00:37
Doesn't it feel good to say it out loud?
9
22000
2000
Não é agradável falar disso em voz alta?
00:39
Don't you feel one step closer already,
10
24000
3000
Não sentem que já estão
um passo mais próximos,
00:42
like it's already becoming part of your identity?
11
27000
3000
como se já se tornasse
parte da sua identidade?
00:45
Well, bad news: you should have kept your mouth shut,
12
30000
3000
Pois bem, má notícia:
deveriam ter ficado de boca fechada,
00:48
because that good feeling
13
33000
2000
porque aquele sentimento agradável,
00:50
now will make you less likely to do it.
14
35000
3000
torna-o menos propício a realizá-lo.
00:53
Repeated psychology tests have proven
15
38000
2000
Repetidamente,
testes psicológicos provaram
00:55
that telling someone your goal
16
40000
2000
que contar a alguém a sua meta
00:57
makes it less likely to happen.
17
42000
2000
torna sua realização menos provável.
00:59
Any time you have a goal,
18
44000
2000
Sempre que tiverem uma meta,
há alguns passos a serem tomados,
alguns trabalhos a serem feitos
01:01
there are some steps that need to be done, some work that needs to be done
19
46000
2000
01:03
in order to achieve it.
20
48000
2000
para realizá-la.
Idealmente, vocês não ficariam satisfeitos
até que tivessem feito o trabalho.
01:05
Ideally, you would not be satisfied until you had actually done the work.
21
50000
3000
01:08
But when you tell someone your goal and they acknowledge it,
22
53000
3000
Mas quando contam sua meta a alguém,
e eles a reconhecem,
01:11
psychologists have found that it's called a "social reality."
23
56000
3000
psicólogos descobriram
que isso se chama "realidade social".
01:14
The mind is kind of tricked into feeling that it's already done.
24
59000
3000
É como se a mente fosse iludida
a sentir que já está feito.
01:17
And then, because you felt that satisfaction,
25
62000
2000
E então, já que sentiram essa satisfação,
01:19
you're less motivated to do
26
64000
2000
ficam menos motivados a realizar
01:21
the actual hard work necessary. (Laughter)
27
66000
3000
o trabalho duro real necessário.
01:24
So this goes against the conventional wisdom
28
69000
2000
Isso contradiz a sabedoria convencional
01:26
that we should tell our friends our goals, right --
29
71000
2000
de que deveríamos contar
nossas metas a nossos amigos
01:28
so they hold us to it.
30
73000
3000
para que eles nos mantenham focados.
01:31
So, let's look at the proof.
31
76000
2000
Então, vamos olhar as evidências.
01:33
1926, Kurt Lewin, founder of social psychology,
32
78000
2000
1926, Kurt Lewin,
fundador da psicologia social,
01:35
called this "substitution."
33
80000
2000
chamou isso de "substituição".
01:37
1933, Vera Mahler found,
34
82000
2000
1922, Vera Mahler descobriu,
01:39
when it was acknowledged by others, it felt real in the mind.
35
84000
3000
quando algo era reconhecido pelos outros,
ele parecia real na mente.
01:42
1982, Peter Gollwitzer wrote a whole book about this
36
87000
3000
1982, Peter Gollwitzer
escreveu um livro inteiro sobre isso,
01:45
and in 2009,
37
90000
2000
e em 2009,
ele realizou alguns novos testes
que foram publicados.
01:47
he did some new tests that were published.
38
92000
2000
01:49
It goes like this:
39
94000
2000
Foi assim:
163 pessoas através
de quatro testes separados --
01:51
163 people across four separate tests --
40
96000
3000
01:54
everyone wrote down their personal goal.
41
99000
3000
cada um escreveu sua meta pessoal.
01:57
Then half of them announced their commitment to this goal to the room,
42
102000
3000
Metade anunciou à sala
seus compromissos com as metas,
02:00
and half didn't.
43
105000
2000
e metade não anunciou.
02:02
Then everyone was given 45 minutes of work
44
107000
2000
E tiveram 45 minutos
para fazer um trabalho
02:04
that would directly lead them towards their goal,
45
109000
3000
que os levaria diretamente
à realização das metas,
02:07
but they were told that they could stop at any time.
46
112000
2000
mas lhes disseram que poderiam
parar a qualquer momento.
02:09
Now, those who kept their mouths shut
47
114000
2000
Aqueles que ficaram
com as bocas fechadas
02:11
worked the entire 45 minutes, on average,
48
116000
3000
trabalharam todos os 45 minutos, em média,
02:14
and when asked afterwards,
49
119000
2000
e quando lhes perguntaram depois,
02:16
said that they felt that they had a long way to go still to achieve their goal.
50
121000
3000
disseram que sentiam ainda estar longe
de atingirem suas metas.
02:19
But those who had announced it
51
124000
2000
Mas aqueles que tinham anunciado
02:21
quit after only 33 minutes, on average,
52
126000
3000
desistiram após apenas
33 minutos, em média,
e quando lhes perguntaram depois,
02:24
and when asked afterwards,
53
129000
2000
disseram que se sentiam
bem mais próximos de atingir suas metas.
02:26
said that they felt much closer to achieving their goal.
54
131000
2000
02:28
So, if this is true,
55
133000
2000
Então, se isso for verdade,
02:30
what can we do?
56
135000
2000
o que podemos fazer?
02:32
Well, you could resist the temptation
57
137000
2000
Bem, poderíamos resistir à tentação
02:34
to announce your goal.
58
139000
2000
de anunciar nossas metas.
02:36
You can delay the gratification
59
141000
2000
Podemos diferir a recompensa
02:38
that the social acknowledgement brings,
60
143000
2000
que o reconhecimento social proporciona.
02:40
and you can understand that your mind
61
145000
2000
E podemos entender que nossas mentes
02:42
mistakes the talking for the doing.
62
147000
3000
confundem o falar com o fazer.
Mas se precisarmos mesmo
falar sobre alguma coisa,
02:45
But if you do need to talk about something,
63
150000
2000
02:47
you can state it in a way
64
152000
2000
podemos falar de modo
que não nos proporcione satisfação,
02:49
that gives you no satisfaction,
65
154000
2000
algo como: "Eu quero mesmo
correr esta maratona,
02:51
such as, "I really want to run this marathon,
66
156000
2000
02:53
so I need to train five times a week
67
158000
2000
então preciso treinar
cinco vezes por semana,
02:55
and kick my ass if I don't, okay?"
68
160000
3000
e pode me dar uns tapas
se eu não fizer isso, certo?"
02:58
So audience, next time you're tempted to tell someone your goal,
69
163000
3000
Portanto, da próxima vez que quiserem
contar suas metas a alguém,
03:01
what will you say? (Silence)
70
166000
2000
o que vão dizer?
03:03
Exactly, well done.
71
168000
3000
Exatamente. Muito bem.
03:06
(Applause)
72
171000
4000
(Aplausos)
